Q&A

Q: Do Japanese games work on North American DS'?
A: Yes, they are region-free, however, if you choose to play multiplayer, they must be the same language.

Q: What is a flash / devkit
A: It's basically a copy of the DS and GBA cartridges and you can copy downloaded games onto them. Most of the GBA ones are just cartridges, while the DS devkits usually have expanded memory.

Q: I read that I also need a NoPass device with my flash kit, what do they do?
A: They basically trick the DS to load unsigned code from the GBA slot.

Q: I also heard that I could flash my DS? That would allow me to not need a NoPass device and save battery life.
A: Yes, it is called FlashMe, it's a firmware replacement that automatically boots up the flash kit. However, you need a NoPass device in order to flash it.

Q: How do I play on Nintendo WiFi?
A: You need to either have a wireless router or the Nintendo USB WiFi Adapter for the DS to connect to.

Q: Does WiFi work if I decide to buy a flash / devkit?
A: Yes, totally! However, some people have stated that you cannot host, but join.

Q: How can I watch movies?
A: You need a dev / flash kit in order to watch movies. Then you use a freeware program called Meteos to convert them. Alternatively, you can use MoonShell, in that case, you would have to convert your videos to DPG format. ( The only video format MoonShell can recognize.

Q: What is MoonShell?
A: It is like PogoShell for the GBA, a sort of operating system that allows you to listen to music, read text files, look at pictures, watch videos, etc.

Q: How can I watch movies? ( ALT )
A: You can buy an accessory called the GBA Movie Player and just stick in a memory card with the movie and watch them that way.

Q: Is there a brightness switch on the DS like the GBASP?
A: Sort of, but you have to access it from the main menu. The DS only has the option of on / off, while the DSL has 4 kinds of brightness.

Q: How backward compatible is the DS?
A: The DS can only run DS and Gameboy Advance games.

Q: What exactly is Pictochat?
A: It is an IM program built by Nintendo that lets you chat with other people within 100 feet of you.

Q: How many modes of multiplayer are there?
A: There are lots of multiplayer modes from being able to play with people right next to you to sharing one game between two people on two different DS'.

Q: What are the difference between back and frontlit screens?
A: Frontlit screens have the light in front of the screen, and vice versa. On frontlit screens, you can see the light if you hold it at a certain angle, however on the backlit ones, lighting is much more even and results in sharper graphics. The DS and 2nd Gen GBA / GBA:M have backlit screens, while the 1st Gen GBA:SP has a frontlit screen.

Q: Can I play older Gameboy games in multiplayer mode?
A: Nope

Q: Are some older GBA accessories compatible with the DS?
A: Sure, a car charger is one of them, but only for the older gen of the DS.

some of your post is inaccurate:

Q: Is there a brightness switch on the DS like the GBASP?
A: Sort of, but you have to access it from the main menu, but for the DS Lite, I believe that there is a switch like the GBASP.
The DS Lite does not have a backlight "switch". There's a small "sun" logo on the bottom left hand side of the touchscreen at the main boot menu (the one where you choose DS mode, pictochat, download play, or GBA mode). Each click bumps you to one of 4 brightness settings.

Q: Is there a brightness switch on the DS like the GBASP?
A: Sort of, but you have to access it from the main menu, but for the DS Lite, I believe that there is a switch like the GBASP.
There were two versions of the GBASP. The first version was front-lit, and the second version (which came out around the same time as the GB Micro) was backlit.

Q: Are some older GBA accessories compatible with the DS?
A: Sure, a car charger is one of them
The charger for the GBASP and the NDSL are different. not sure about the DS phat, though.

Holy smokes! Just found out there is a flash kit in the making called the DSLink.

It is the same size as a normal DS game, and takes MicroSD / Transflash cards.

Card inside DS Lite:

Loader menu:
http://img352.imageshack.us/img352/751/61012463bc737711b1c9elu0.gif

The developer said that the Castlevania intro had no slowdown at all using a KingMAX card, so I am expecting no slowdowns at all :D

Company site article: ( In Chinese )

I might sell my EZ4Lite if reviews are great! ( Which I expect and most people are anticipating for. )

How did you get DSOrganize to work? You just extracted the folder to the DS and just put the ROM into the mini without using the game manager, right?

Razor Ramon HG
08-07-2006, 07:26 PM
I got BeUp to work by using the Chisem (sp?) Test .gba version.

Extract all 3 versions to your M3 and try loading all of them sh0n.

How's DSOrganize?

sh0n
08-07-2006, 09:02 PM
eddoe: I extracted the files onto my harddrive first. If you are using the m3 sd or mini sd adapter load the DSorganize folder along with dsorganize.gba.nds (in the folder itself) onto your memory card

Bennyboy: DSOrganize is not bad, it turns your NDS into a PDA. Kinda cool if you like to organize your appointments, addresses, numbers, calendars, to do lists.

They also have some kind of irc and homebrew database in there. I haven't gotten it to work yet.

On a side note

For the BeUp, I tried the same version as you did benny but it has a problem connecting (I guess to my router). It tries to connect and just freezes on me (stylus keyboard especially).

Any fix on this? Could it be cause I have WEP enabled on my router?

I'm looking for more homebrews too. Name some if you guys have used and like it

I have WEP enabled, it automatically bypasses it cause it connects to your router by looking up your WiFi settings already stored.

If you get a connection error once you connect to the servers, keep retrying and it'll eventually work.

If you have a DS Lite, it's a really big risk since you could mess up during flashing. You have to load up the flashing program, then bridge a part of the DS known as the SL1 with something metal. If you accidently hit the left side of the hole the SL1 is located in during flashing, you will brick your DS because it will turn it off during flashing. It's much easier since it's impossible to turn it off on a DS Phat.

Here's a good guide.

i prefer a Ds No pass device instead.

it's safer :)

and plus , battery life won't be lost that much cuz the G6 lite consumes identically to a regular GBA cart. so it's just gonna depreciate a lil more with a no pass like passcard 3

Razor Ramon HG
08-08-2006, 11:05 AM
If you have a DSL, it's probably safer, but if you have the old DS Phat, there's no way to brick it unless you turn off the DS.

More here (http://www3.emu-zone.org/host/ediy/emu-hw/emuhw01.htm).

Supposedly, only flashed DS' can load the DSLink as the company itself is debating whether to cut costs by not implementing a passme method within the card itself.

But 90$ USD with the EZ4 Lite,USB extension cable, USB SD reader, SD Adapter, 1gb sandisk micro SD was a pretty good deal.

http://opium.gbatemp.net/flashme/sl1vr.jpg

I don't mind giving it a go as I flashed my fat one, but I won't take any blame if I mess up :P

Basically, you have to short the bridge of the hole without touching the left side because that will turn off the DS. If it turns off during flashing, your DS is a happy 150 dollar brick. Why do we have to short the SL1? If we don't, we can't flash the firmware.

yeah, i really want to see how it sits inside a ndsl.

where did you get it from?

Razor Ramon HG
08-10-2006, 06:51 PM
Attention everyone with a NDL, I can flash NDLs for some cash as I wanna upgrade to a NDL myself, LOL.

Should take around half an hour or less each, I only need the DSL.

If I brick it, I will pay for repairs.

No need to worry as I have the perfect tool to short the SL1 without touching the VR1 which will turn off the DS resulting in a brick if it's in the flashing process.

Why flash the DS? It saves battery life by 2-3 hours due to the fact that you don't need the Passcard / Superkey / EZPass inside the DS.

P.S. I'll also flash normal DS's even cheaper!

Hope it's what you wanted.

I charge 20 for Lite, 10 for Phats

Should take less than 20 minutes like sh0n's.

What you get is:
1. Longer battery life since the NoPass doesn't need to redirect data
2. Autoloading flash cart menu, no need to click on the NoPass in main DS menu
3. Warranty is still there as I am going to be flashing with a stealth version.

Razor Ramon HG
08-18-2006, 12:54 PM
Yes, but for animation, I have actually got it running so smooth, without choppyness.

Perhaps the framerate or bitrates are too high on your clips. Did you switch dithering and gopskip to 0?

If you watch animation, I recommend opening up global.ini in the shell folder of Moonshell and setting AdaptiveDelayControl to 0, however some movies will be out of sync ( Family Guy and South Park doesn't, however )

I'm testing new settings with Final Fantasy VII Advent Children and That 70's Show. I'll post my results.

oh yeah so G6 or SuperCard?? that's whats on my mind now

but the SC groupbuy seems like a really good deal, might have to hop on that.

maybe I should secure a DS lite first

Supercard works perfectly even with a normal MicroSD, so that's a huge plus and expandable memory up to 2GB.

G6 has perfect emulation, supposedly, but if you send stuff wrong, you could corrupt it.

It has 512MB of storage, good enough if you just want to play games, but Supercard has more bang for your buck IMO.

Would a 5mb rom take up 5mb on the card or is there some strange kinda expanding thing.

Razor Ramon HG
08-22-2006, 01:24 PM
That's just for main GBA flash carts.

For the Supercard, EZ4, M3, it's in megabytes.

But for the G6, or internal flashbased ones, it's calculated in megabits. 1 megabyte = 8 megabits.

Since the majority of the G6s are in 4GBits. 4/8 = 0.5, or 512MBytes.

I was wondering the same thing :)

since most roms after < 10mb... a 1gb microsd would hold like 100 games?

i bought mine at a-power for 59.

so it comes to about 66.

at current exchange rate that's ~45 dollars plus shipping (unless they ship free)

You can buy a 2gb microSD from eBay for $115cdn shipped. That's enough room to fit about half of the US releases if you want that many on your card or load your favourite games and a few movies too.

i got all DS releases too

Oh and supercard works with all the old school GB and GBC games too! I was playing Legend of Zelda Link's Awakening all over again!!
That was way cool :)

That's about it for games that are exciting..

I want to play through the Legend Of Zelda Oracle series :)

i'll send the mario and starfox.

i just copied the .gb files over .. i think they were clean. I put them in a GB folder.

When the supercard boots up I just go to the game i want and start it up. I think it has the built in emulators and such. You could probably try something like gbongba or goomba

Nintendo just announced that they're releasing the black and pink DS Lites in US (and I'm presuming Canada) on September 13

^the pink might be different, because the japan version is "noble pink" and the N.A. version is "coral pink"

anyways, anyone play animal crossing? post your friend codes! :p

The brighter screen itself is almost worth the upgrade.

i played it when i was at the san diego comic-con - it was so weird to see this game in 3d that played like FF1...

nonetheless, i'll still pick it up... but i'm more interested in ff6 advance

ff6 advance is pretty much the same as the snes one i assume
with maybe a few added things like a boss or a secret dungeon after you beat the game just like ff4 advance

my G 6 Lite is working flawlessly, for anyone of you that want one, it's recommended. I'll probably just keep this one, and if I ever want to upgrade, It'll probably be a card that only uses the DS cart slot, since that's the new Nintendo ds flash cart upgrade.

I'm aware -- but I never finished FF6 - my SNES copy has been sitting by my TV for the last 7 years crying for me to play it again... it's about 1/2 done at this point

this is why I love the GBA - I can freakin play the game wherever I want, whenever I want
