i wanna go again... foods always awesome
Took my gf there tonight for our 3 year anniversary. Food was great just like last time. My gf hates yams and she loved the thunder fries. The tiger mayo was delicious and the dozen oyster special was yummy. We tried the Taco Rice and it was pretty good.
Will be back there next Saturday for a friend's bday. ;) :p hahaha
VIP cards are in now Deon? If so i'll be there next weekend haha.
Thanks for the great service and the bday cake tonight Deon. Sorry about everybody showing up late but I was on time! :p

Now I am thinking, if the food there actually has crack in them because they are so ADDICTIVE lol
Oh God please keep the standard of your food. I've been to too many good restaurants that got lazy once they are established

Deon: Just a suggestion, but it gets pretty packed and orders tend to pile up, I know our table's did, and wrong orders go to wrong tables and/or wrong things get charged, etc. I would suggest that after every table orders, you print out an order form of what the table has ordered and have the waitress mark it off as it comes to the table (match what was ordered with what has already come, etc.)
I know a lot of Chinese Restaurants do this and it eases confusion and mistakes. The table orders and they receive an order form. When the food comes, it gets checked off of the list accordingly.
^ That's actually a pretty good suggestion. We had a few mix ups with our orders last weekend for my friend's bday but we know it can get a bit hectic with big parties so we didn't think too much about it.

Just been there tonight for my B-day the resturant environment is very nice, I can't belief it used to be Hooters. As for the food the best Jap food In Van so far. Way better than Dozo which we went the night before. Definetly will come back kinda savoring some Taco rice now ......
^ Their taco rice is good!
Reminds me of the spanish rice my gf and I make at home :D

Went there again yesterday.. table service was kind of slow... we had to ask several times before we can get our water filled.. i find the portion size for some dishes has shrunk like the chicken karrage.. i remember it being bigger.. other then that.. it was good..

Weekdays we're usually open to about 11ish-12. I kind of adjust depending on the flow of business. I won't stay up 'til 12:30am when there's no customers, but I'll stay will whenever if we're full house!

I can't remember what I ordered, but there was a group of 15 of us (apparently it was like some singles party or something) but if the fish was fresh. Wasn't too big on the Oyster Motoyaki, but the raw stuff rocks, assuming you don't chug it down.

was just at the resturant today. All in all, it was a fairly good experience although i was pretty disappointed with the crab tartar, spicy tuna, sashimi salad and the taco rice. For what you're paying i figured the taco rice would have been at least a bit bigger. I loved the agadeshi tofu with spicy calamari topping, thunder fries, and teh cheesecake creme brule was great. I also had the beef sashami which was decent (cause i like it slightly cold, and ours was warm), ocean red which i liked, and pork gyozas which came out pipin hot :)
good job on the restaurant overall!

i went early just because I don't have a reservation. i went when the sun was still up so i wasn't able to watch the projector's hockey game, and because i was early, i didn't get all the pretty receptionist to greet me yet.
i tried to sangria which was great, i tried the yam fries, which was awesome because it was different (as in shape) and the sauce was spicy yet compliemented each other. The samurai roll (with eel on top) was good, meh.. nothign too special, colorful i gotta say. The sasahmi (beef and the seafood) were both above par.
i am no chef, but what i did see was a lot of japanese white sweet paste which is the typical sauce people eat in sushi. I see it being used in a lot of yoru dishes. I just want to make a suggestion and see if you can expand and come up with some special sauce. i know this is easier said than done but what Ebisu is lacking is the wow factor in taste. The decor was decent, the color and presentation are just above par (many dishes were just decorated with tomato and free pepper for color) but the taste and shocking value weren't there to WOW someone.
It's hard work to make a good dish at a restaurant eg// catcus / milostone, but its the special sauce, marinates and ingrediences that makes a great dish and a memoriable restaurant. eg//baccus, quattro..etc...
let's make a comparision. Guu, all jap wording, minimal english. sometimes, you really need to know what you are ordering. Chopstick cafe, english menu but lack pictures. you guys have the best of both worlds. i really appreciate the colorful menu and the variety of items with pictures however, the draw back is the high expectations that's setup by seeing the pictures. the sangria was by far the funniest. pic shows tons of fruits and strawberries and pears, but when we got it it was like OH.
overall, i had a good experience. i gotta say the alcohol menu was crazzzyyyyy.

Mr. bunch-of-#'s: :D Hehe I really appreciate your thorough feedback and comments! Very useful and informative!
Yeah now that the the sun stays up a lot longer we're having problems with the projection screen being not bright or sharp enough with all our huge windows wrapping the restaurant. I'm thinking to tint the windows or get some curtains in the near future, not sure yet.
Your not the first to comment on the sauce. It's so hard to please everybody, first somebody told me that we use the same sauce for Ebi Mayo, Thunder Fries and Chicken Karaage, our house Chili Cajun mayo, it's a great sauce but it gets repetitive.
So we changed the dip for the Chicken Karaage to a BBQ Garlic sauuce, a week later another buddy of mine says "Aw you changed the dip for the Chicken Karaage? The old one was so good!" ... We are now working on tweaking a few new sauces for the other dishes and see what we can come up with! As you mentioned it's easier said than done but we'll keep trying! We're always trying to improve our dishes.
Oh and the note on the Sangria, lol sorry 'bout that I'm sure it wasn't intentional. It IS suppose to look like the picture, or as similar to it as possible. The bartender probably got busy or lazy. Either way I'm gonna remind her about it to ensure it doesn't happen again!
Thanks again and I hope we improve in time for your next visit!

AznSiR:
I also had the oysters, they were great, but it was really the pictures that got me into it. I tell you the pictures in your menu does wonders.
Ebi mayo sauce being used as a base for the thunder fries was perfect. what I meant was, my samurai roll, seafood sashimi and I thnik even the beef sashimi salad had the white sauce on it which was just way over doing it, even if it was being used for decorative sense.
i went there super early. there was only like 3 tables.
I really have no idea who you look like or even if you were there so it would be super awkard and say "oh hey... i'm 6793026...
are u the owner...."

Deon: The Spicy Mayo is great! but it gets pretty repetitive, sorta like all the fried dishes kind of have the same taste in a way. But it's not like the spicy mayo isn't good it's just sometimes change is good =D

LOL That would be hilarious if you say your entire name full of numbers. My waitresses would be like "uh... weirdo" ... haha
but no, really you can just ask any of the people working there "Is Deon here?" and they will gladly go grab me or tell you I'm not here. :)
What would be weird is if I went to every table asking "Hi how's the food? Are you six, seven, nine, three .. uh.. and some other numbers?"
I'll mention the white dressing part to my chefs, thanks for the heads up!

The Chicken Karrage was a little too crispy and hard to bite >< but overall it was really good ^^ Also my mom tried Hapa 2weeks ago; Guu week ago and she said Ebisu taste's better and the presentation was also better than either of them haha

ghetto.
I was there for Nucks Game 3.
First timer. Didn't get a chance to see Deon. I was the guy wearing the Vintage Luongo jersey sitting at the bar by the 2 LCD's.
I think I saw a few other fellow RS'ers (Have seen their pictures on RS) throughout the game.
Had quite the few dishes some hits and some misses.
Hits:
Unachee: Loved the texture and flavours. Cream cheese inside was great!
Agadeshi Tofu: GF absolutely loved it, she gobbled it up rather quickly.
Thunder Fries: Spicy mayo was tasty. Great appy with pint of beer or a drink.
Misses (Guess these need work on)
Fish cake appy: Small in portion, only 3 of them? Taste was alright. I guess just the portion could have been bigger. The picture in the menu lied to us hahaha
Yakisoba: The beef was rather tough. It had some parts of the hard tendon and sinew. The noodle itself was cooked right. But the whole dish was salty and sour. I'm not sure if i remembered yakisoba to be like this. I remembered it was suppose to be more sweet tasty (kinda like a teriyaki stir fry noodle dish)
Hope you can use these suggestion Deon.
Overall, the atompshere, food and drinks are great.

I won't. The service was absolute shit. I figured just in case, I'll make a reservation (habit of mine), I get there and magically my reservation has disappeared, no record or anything. So they manage to find my girlfriend and I a table, fine.... But then it takes a girl 20 minutes to get me a beer.... 20 minutes! Not only that, but afterwards it took them another 30 minutes to get us an appetizer.... A couple beside us ordered the same one (after we did, mind you) and got it in less than half the time, go figure. I forget what the appetizer was, but it kicked ass.... Had our meal, the food was decent (not worth the price IMO).... But the service was horribly inconsistent... There was no specific waiter/tress attending to us and it took forever to get a hold of someone, and then took even more time to get what we wanted. I could understand if it was busy, but it wasn't at all, so there's no excuse for the piss poor service. A really bad first impression if you ask me....

The Hype: I apologize on behalf of my staff for what happened to you that night. I really don't know what could have been wrong that night, but it's hard for me to pinpoint anything when you never stated what day, time, and what food. I've only ever experienced problems like that when we are totally slammed on a weekend or it was very early like when we first open at 5 because we were understaffed for a short while. Both problems have been noted and rectified a whle ago. About the drinks, I had a really, really bad bartender for about half a week and I fired her, maybe it was that off-day. Nobody's perfect :(
About the reservation, wow I'm really just as clueless as you. Maybe the cashier wrote it down on the wrong date. Sorry again.

The misses have been noted;
Fish cake appy, I assume that's the Chikuwa Cheese. Has been increased in portion.
Yakisoba, has been changed, hopefully for the better!
Kingyo is on Denman, new place opened a few months before us, it's pretty good, some dishes are good, some are 'ok'.
I personally think Guu is better than Kingyo. I have a waitress that works at my place and Kingyo too.

Hey there. I don't wanna be one to rain on the parade too, but I agree the service is one of the worst I've ever encountered anywhere. The food is what makes me even think about returning, but then I remember how snobby/airheaded the waitresses are. I don't remember if they wear nametags or not, but next time maybe I could get you a few names :P
I know its a busy and popular place now, and delay is to be expected. but I think inconsistency and 1 hour wait for food is a bit overboard, isn't it? :)

05-12-2007, 04:38 PM
TigerSY: Thank you for your feedback. I make sure all servers are always wearing their name tags so please feel free to tell me who they were, it's important to you, me and everyone else that we fix this problem :) Don't need any bad eggs ruining the entire farm!
It's really quite difficult for me to run around the entire restaurant listening to all the waitresses conversations with customers. Unfortunately GOOD help is actually pretty hard to find. Since we are fairly new the best I can do is hire a bunch of people and weed out the bad ones if they don't show any improvement.
Unlike Guu/Kingyo, they just transfer all their old waitresses over from the previous restaurants so most if not all of them are already experienced. When we opened most of the servers were new people and trained from practically scratch.
Also I'm just curious that these comments are based on just 1 visit or was it always bad for the 2-3 times?
Even legendary Tojo's, ultra-popular Hapa, sleek Shiru-bay get their feathers ruffled every once in a while. Infact if you read reviews around the net some of those places get REALLY bad reviews, and quite often. Yet they are still raved about because it's actually good, most of the time.
I hope I can improve on the bad service that you recieved and cut the 'bad days' to a minimum (impossible to be perfect), at least you have a chance to voice your opinion to me directly and things can be done about it. :)

Haha well I wanted to make sure Dinner was going smooth before I attempt to sacrifice the other half of my day!
The menu is entirely different, it's catered more to the business rush crowd which don't have time to peruse through our entire dinner menu. It mainly consists of Bento boxes, Seafood Tairyo Boats and sushi roll platters so they can quickly pick a combo which would have a bit of everything and whatever they were craving (ie. Chicken, Prawns, vegetarian, etc etc.)
BUT we'll also offer seperate Tapas (although not as extensive as the dinner menu) for people who still want to pick and choose whatever they want.

Hey Deon,
It's Jassie from Hamber (if you remember!). I took my sisters to your restaurant as we were downtown for lunch today and I had heard great things about the restaurant already.
2 of us had the Tiger Prawn meal, and one had Noodle Box A.
We really enjoyed the meals (esp. the Tiger Prawn in the Garlic Butter sauce.. the flavour was exceptional!), and the service was really good, the staff was really friendly to us and the drink selection was awesome.
Only hiccup was, the Noodle Box A, which my sister thought came with Chicken in the Udon soup, but there was no chicken in the meal? Not sure if she just read it wrong, or if something was messed up when she asked for Veg. Tempura instead of the Prawn tempura.
For the price, downtown near Robson, I think it was very reasonable (under 40 for the 3 of us, with 1 Lychee slush drink ordered)... and I'm definitely coming back again!
The only other suggestion my sisters had, was that during lunch time (especially with it being quieter) for the music to be different. I didn't mind it, but they aren't fans of the rap :P.

Just a thought but the Chicken Karaage seemed a bit dry this time around. Also you seemed to be quite busy with some of the waitreses bro ;) haha

Hmm, I went here with my gf the other day cuz I heard all the good stuff about it. I'm not a drinker and nor it my gf, so needless to say I don't have any comments about your drink menu, although it did look very exhaustive (good thing!). However, the food wasn't as spectacular as everyone said. The tastes weren't anything special the sashimi was okay. I started off with the agedashi tofu w/ the calamari...that was fucking awsome. I expected the rest of the dishes to be as kick ass...but nah, they were just regular tasting, sometimes a bit too much of the saucy stuff.
For the price I paid...it's somewhat expensive but considering it was downtown, it's okay but the quality and tastiness of the food should have been up there. I probably won't come back just becuase I don't think the taste justifies the cost but you do have some things on your menu that people may want to try out, since no one else offers it.
thanx again deon for fitting me in last weekend =)

Thanks for your feedback!
Yeah a lot of people like the Calamari Tofu, if you could recall even some of the other dishes that you ate I could work to improve on them, but sometimes its hard to satisfy every single individuals preferences and tastes.
I guess you don't eat out much in Downtown. I firmly believe our prices are very competitive say compared to Hapa and Shirubay, quantity and quality. Our drinks prices are comparable to that little hole-in-the-wall Greek Taverna close to Denman ($9.99 pitchers), but we provide a great, spacious ambiance for you to enjoy it in along with good food, the rent ain't cheap! :p Every dish cant be 'awesome' as it's impossible to achieve perfection, every restaurant will have their hiccups, positives and negatives.

Oh yeah, that's for sure, and im not saying your resturant is bad or anything, I want people to go and try it out, I just think maybe my standards were too high when I gathered all the feed back from this forum. I guess I expected to taste some godly food..lol. Everyone's palate is different so don't worry too much about mine :P As long as there are (a large number of) people who do enjoy your food.
Made reservations for my bday dinner this Friday.
Time to try the agadashi tofu with calamari and more thunder fries + oysters :D

This thread is just a giant ebisu circle jerk, a few people I know (from clubRSX) went and foudn the liqour nice and cheap but the food to be kinda mediocre.
Personally it's not my kinda cuisine.

Some of the food is just mediocre, but some of the items I love getting are the Tuna Tacos (wicked deal, especially compared to places like Joey's offering pretty much the same thing for a higher price and less tasty), thunder fries (great mayo, and good to keep for dipping other food items in lol), and calamari tofu is a must (I don't even like tofu!).

Lunch on a warm day on the patio...awesome.
I think I'm gonna start to go for lunch more often. It's not as lively as the dinner crowd, but it's definately more peaceful which I like. Smoooooth atmosphere.
Went there for my birthday last week and everything was smooth as usual. I booked it for 9 people but had an extra person show up. The older Japanese man brought us to our booth and I knew right away it wasn't going to be enough for my group. I told him and he found us a table right by the end of the bar. Great service :D

Me and my friends went on Tues night...i'm surprised how busy it got later on actually. Second time for me and so far i love Ebisu.
One complaint was with the calamari that came w/ the Agadashi tofu. The calamari pieces were so tiny but they looked huge cuz they were covered in lotsa batter lol..it's nothing major just something i laughed at.
Other than that i enjoyed the Taco rice and loved the oysters...super deal. And the crab salad was delicious. As always the drink prices are awesome. All around great place to lounge around and chill. Me and my friends might come again tonight for some fun haha.

wondering how come i got a "Shark" energy drink to come with my Absolute Bull?
shouldnt it have been a red bull??
not a big deal to me but my friend made a point that legally you should have had the waitress mention it before serving the drink.
just FYI for the manager..
Obsideon
07-22-2007, 06:33 PM
Hey 4AGmk1,
Yeah the Shark Energy Drink owner came by the other day and gave me some great offers that totally blow Red Bull away because they were trying to win me over. I am currently using a batch that he supplied for me to see what the general feedback would be if I switched to Shark because Red Bull is a much more popular brand name. We'll see what happens when the Red Bull rep calls me in the near future wondering why I haven't ordered from them in a while ;)
The name, is the name, in the menu it says "Absolute Bull". It was just a tip of the hat to the 2 companies that have thus far been supplying me. Absolut Vodka and Red Bull, but the name just implies what the drink is. Absolut isn't spelled the same as the Vodka nor is Bull directly linked to "Red Bull Energy Drink".
Simply formalities. If I decide to stick with Shark then the menu will be updated very shortly.
On a side note. Back in the day at the clubs I always order "Red Bull Vodka" and not once. NEVER, has the bartender ever asked me "Is Shark ok?" when he was clearly pouring from a Shark can?... legal matters eh? :evil
Haha just kidding! :)
PS: So would it affect your decision in ordering the drink if it was Shark and not Red Bull? Your opinion and others would help in deciding if I should stay with Red Bull or switch over to Shark. If your indifferent then I will pick one that can benefit me financially in the long run so I can pass my savings on to my customers by not raising prices and even lowering them! :D
Haven't tried the Shark energy drink before. Does it taste the same as Red Bull?

Yeah it was nuts, it was even worse than a weekend night because it was such a huge rush before the show, everyone came at the same time so the kitchen was slammed and I was short-staffed up front because all the girls I hired wanted to watch the fireworks so they couldn't come help the extra shift that they weren't scheduled for :flamemad:

went to ebisu finally today after being outta town all the time.
Food was pretty good except i find that the food a bit on the oily side.
had the oyster motoyaki, thunder fries, tofu w/ calamari, unagee roll, salmon caponocci(sp?) and three raw oysters.
maybe it was because we ordered the wrong foods, but yea, a tad too much oil in the motoyaki, therefore the oil just filled us right up.
i think maybe u were short on staff? I was waiting by the door for about 4-5 mins and the whole time (staff noticed we were there), i just see staff walking back and forth bringing out food, maybe at least tell me to wait a moment and someone will be there to assist me? drinks/food coming a bit slow, and i'm talking abt a glass of water i had wait at least 10 mins for.
but like i said, it was just probably you short of staff.
BUT...overall....great atmosphere, great food, some pretty gd service (well, when they came along) and price was decent. I didn't find it THAT expensive as some ppl has mentioned, will definitely go again, perhaps this week..LOL!!

Jermyzy: Ch28 is almost dead on. About half the menu is the same as the Robson location but the other half has been modified to cater more to the Richmond demographic whereas D/T has a much more diverse crowd.
SlayerS_`BoxeR`: A brand new lunch menu has been set with my dinner chefs. It will be out soon to replace the much too basic and boring current one so don't write us off yet! :p (We were short on kitchen staff.)
CSKC-7: LOL yeah but keep in mind it's just, not the same. The whole D/T vibe as suppose to Richmond. Richmond is, well, Richmond. ;)
afro1314: Haha well dang Oyster Motoyaki is practically baked IN oil and we give you the bread to dip into the sauce! (not for the faint of heart, or you health freaks) :p
Thunder Fries: Deep fried sweet potatoe ... that's kinda oily..
Spicy Calamari: Deep fried calamari on top of Deep fried tofu ... more oil..
Unachee: Deep fried Unagi and cream cheese roll ... wow you really like deep fried stuff! :D
Salmon Carpaccio: Ah you tried the new menu special! The salmon is first marinated in a sauce that has virgin olive oil as one of the ingredients ... so.. um.. :(
Raw Oysters: If that had oil in it I'm gonna have to fire somebody
Well from the looks of it you DID have a pretty greasy meal. I think I would be bloated too after all that deep fried stuff, try some of the sushi an' grilled meat or some seafood next time! :)

Well u can't always hire the experience ppl. I think it have to do more with if the person are willing to work hard and do they have a good attitude. Of coz looks is also a factor. Would u want a 300lbs female waiter severing even though she is super nice, good attitude and very helpful?

I can't remember at the top of my head every single item we ordered but I loved the beef sashimi and the Unachee roll. The girls also seemed to enjoy thunder fries. The yakiudon was interesting. It was a bit salty but that was probably because of the bacon. It probably could have used more ingredients in it, like prawns or mushrooms and other kinds of veggies. We tried the taco rice because I had heard so much about it here. The girls didn't seem to think it was that big of a deal. I didn't mind it, I liked how bits of the rice were kind of crunchy. The Tiger Prawns are one of my favourites. AHH! I just realized that I forgot to order the Tuna Tacos.. I had them last time and I loved them.
All in all, I think everybody had a fun time and enjoyed the food. I was expecting service to be slow and crappy to be honest but I was pleasantly surprised! Food arrived promptly and your waitresses were friendly. The only advice I could offer is to have them swing by tables regularly to refill water!
10+ dishes plus a round of drinks and a pitcher of sangria for 8 girls = $257.. not bad!
P.S. your restaurant attracts a lot of pervs :p

So I spotted an "Ebisu" in Richmond.. it's not the same is it?
Obsideon
09-05-2007, 05:19 PM
It's not 'the same' per se.
Richmond is, well Richmond, so we kind of try to model it to appeal more to the Richmond crowd rather than the Downtown crowd.
That's not to say it's worse, just different, give it a try if your in the area & leave me some feedback as I can't be at 2 places at once! I'm in D/T more often. I try to drop by the Richmond one every once in a while to make sure they aren't 'sucking'. :)

Yes, I have to agree that the Richmond location is not as good. The Richmond location is more like a "regular restaurant" compared to a "hang out joint" like the Downtown one, which isn't what I was expecting when I went there. Also, some of the must-have menu items are missing like the fish tacos and thunderfries (the mini ones with the other sauce just don't cut it for me!). The Richmond one is good if you're just looking to get a meal, but not really chill with friends :).

Went to the Robson location this past weekend for a small birthday group, and I found it to be a very good night. The Ika Meshi (grilled squid stuffed with unagi/salmon/shittake sushi) was unbelievably tender and tasty, I've never had anything like it. I've had similar sushi compared to the Mango Paradise roll (california roll topped with smoked salmon and mango), but the salty smoked salmon makes this version the most appealing.
Some items were disappointing. The soft shell crab dish was soaked in a vinegarette that made it unpleasant, so I couldn't taste the crab. The Hamachi Inferno was disappointing, since the fish was sliced so thinly it had no taste or texture. Others at the table ordered more items and commented that too many of the dishes/sushi came with mayo/cream sauce.
I was driving so I didn't order any drinks. However I noticed the bartender was pouring cocktails filled with cubed ice, and he was free pouring. No jigger, no consistent speed pour spouts, not even pouring into an empty glass and then adding cubed ice after. I doubt his drinks have any measurable consistency at all.
One thing of note is that the restaurant seemed to be packed with a very young crowd, like underage drinking young. There were very few tables with the 20's and 30's crowd. I don't know if this reflects positively or negatively on the restaurant, just an observation.
Overall I was impressed by Ebisu. It is definitely a place I would go back to, especially on a hockey night with the huge projection they have setup on a wall. It's not a restaurant without it's faults, but it's decent. I would choose it over Hapa Izakaya simply because of service and the fact that Ebisu takes reservations. I would say Ebisu also has an edge on Guu based on location and value. (note: I know Ebisu is not an izakaya, but the format and menu are similar).
BTW: I'd really like to see nachos and taco rice removed from the menu lol...but if people like it, all the power to you.

Hey jlo,
Very insightful review and I appreciate it a lot, so first off thanks!
- I will make of a note of the less positive dishes that you mentioned!
- All bartenders have been trained and a couple of them have won bartending championships in Japan and the US so I have confidence in their consistency, give or take a few mL. All the bottles have spouts on them I forbid free-pour so the liquids you must have seen that he was pouring into the drinks were probably juices/syrup, they pour those into Absolut/Gin and other bottles for easier access rather than use juice boxes and jugs. I will still give it a double check though =)
- We always check the ID's of people that appear to be underage, most of the crowd are easily in the mid-late 20's. You know how asians are, always look young haha.
I'm glad you enjoyed your visit and I hope I can make your future visits better!

I'm not at the very least amused by the richmond location. It tends to be blatently playing off the name, as I was expecting it to be the same consistency and quality I've come to expect from DT ebisu.
I've been to the DT one many times, and have always had a fun time, with some bumpin music, awesome drinks, good atmosphere.
Went to the Richmond one, on a Saturday, or was it a Friday... and it was absolutely dead, not one person, nothing really playing on the TVs, all of 1 waitress and 1 waiter that seemed like they didn't want to be there.
When I asked for the drinks, they said they only had straight up vodka, and stuff like that. I was expecting to at least be able to order shots and so forth...

first of all, were you guys short staffed tonight? if so.. then please completely disregard this post... if not... then continue reading
the food was awesome. loved the sashimi advenuture...the yellow tail n the mackerel (sp?) was heavenly.... but sadly the service was quite disappointing. i've been to your joint a few times beforehand and didn't really have any complaints until now, perhaps it may have been because my friend and i were next to a large group, and stuck in a corner, but i must say, during our 2 hourish stay, we were checked on maybe 3 times, if not less. i was left without anything to drink for quite sometime, as well it took over 1/2 an hour for us to get our bill, and have it brought back to us. please feel free to PM if you need any further info. =)
I'm actually going to dinner tomorrow night at the downtown one and I just came by to see if anyone has some opinions on the place ... a friend wanted to try it out so its a nice surprise that its a revscener who owns it ... now I'm looking forward to eating there since it sounds like a great place ... :)

I went there last friday night.
not satisfied.
Ocean Red sushi's price wasn't correct cuz website says it's 7.71.
I paid more than 12 $ for this roll.
I ordered 2 sushi rolls and 1 hot sake and 1 sashimi n paid $ 50 for 2.
Food wan't enough for 2 . and quality wasn't very good compare to the price of it.
But mood was good. and I liked lunch menu.

The ocean red is $7.71 ... unless it's mixed up with another roll? That's impossible.. you can bring me back the bill next time and we can figure it out? We also use Wild Sockeye salmon to wrap the roll and that's not cheap yet it's 7 bucks. The other rolls like the Samurai Power, Ebisu Spiral, those are around $10-$12 but they are also bigger than the Ocean Red and various stuffing (BBQ, Eel, Tiger Prawns, etc).
Which sashimi did you order? The Sashimi Adventure? That's about $17 for Toro, Hamachi, Seared Beef, Salmon and other high-end fish.
I really do feel it's quite reasonable considering the location in central downtown Robson. I always check prices of all the other places in the area and we're quite competitive in terms of quality to prices. I'm not sure what you mean exactly by the quality we have pretty high turnover for food so we order fresh supplies daily but I'll have to look into that if you can be more specific. Thanks!
You should have tried some of the highly popular Thunder Fries, Tiger Mayo, Chicken Kaarage, etc. You ordered sashimi seafood and sake. I would still be hungry too! There are many other dishes that are lower prices that fill you up and taste good!
Also not every item is marked up the exact same way. Like example, a full dozen - 12 fresh oysters for 12 bucks?! ... super value right there considering Joe Fortes would be like $18 for HALF a dozen. It's the same oyster too it's not like they get it from the Moon eh? Most other Jap places go for about roughly $2/pc.
Food for thought. :)

Ah ok my bad haha let me see here..
Yeah I have to agree with you on some of the points there Diggy.
I didn't know the weekends were that bad hmm I might have to go there more often... and talk to the manager there ... ugh
Plus I am not there that much myself. Maybe like once every few weeks.
The Richmond location is made to look more like a restaurant than a lounge due to the Richmond Police being super uptight.
- If it LOOKS like people drink there, the cops will ride my ass raw. Look at all those drinking lounges that have been shutdown. Better safe than sorry. Since I'm not there to moniter the drinking that often.
- Plus too many gangster-wannabe trouble makers in Richmond so I don't want any problems.
Some of those issues regarding quality and service there will be addressed but for a fun time and partying just take the trip to Downtown and visit me! :D
Some people like the Richmond one simply for a good dinner and cheap beer but they don't like the D/T location because it's too rowdy for them. I know of a few regulars that go to the Richmond location for Canucks games too. So it's whatever you feeling you can go to either of them?
Hope that helps, and thanks for your guys feedback. It's always appreciated and I'll do everything to my ability to make improvements!

Just a heads up, our 1 year Anniversary is coming up this Saturday, December 22nd and we're gonna have a SNOWBOARD RAFFLE (The board is like $400 bucks) and many, many free give aways (lots of alcohol) haha so here's some more incentives to come down if you were already thinking of doing so or change your plans if you didn't :p
Also on New Years Eve I'm gonna keep this place bumpin' until 4am (Yes that's right 4am) so come down and party hard! Those of you that were here last year know how crazy it was I don't think I lasted until 4 last year ... like 3ish? *shrugs* Stop making me chug champagne! Disgusting! :bluemad:
There will be a cover charge of $25 on NYE but for the cool RS people here it will only be $15 but you need to tell me in advance!
Call me or PM me, whatever works! Let the good times roll!

Ch28: Oops I thought I answered that already heh ... is it on PPV? If it's not then I can show it but otherwise it's not a good decision considerin how damn expensive it is for a commercial UFC license and not that many people come just for that like other places!

Yeah it's PPV :(
Finally went to Ebisu yesterday. Managed to get there before the hockey rush, was lucky since I didn't even know a game was gonna be on. Anyways to the food.
First up was the Mentaiko Yakiudon, a good start. The fish roe was a nice touch, by clinging to the noodles it held the flavour nicely. Next was the Chiwaku Cheese, good flavour combination and perfectly fried. The Prawn Gyoza was next and was only the real disappointment of the evening.I thought it'd be neat to have a gyoza with the tail hanging out, other than the presentation the flavour was a bit lacking too. There was a lot of gyoza wrapper and not much else to go with it other than the ginger slivers inside. Maybe adding something like some ground meat, a shrimp/seafood paste, some more vegetables or a filler like noodles or crushed tofu would've been nice. The Thunder Fries and the Ebisu Swirl put the meal back on track.
The fried items were very good, served nice and hot and cooked just right. The highlight of the evening came with dessert. The Cheesecake Creme Brulee really wowed us. Nice flavour and a the perfectly caramelized top was great. My friend kept saying over and over again that she was glad we came.
We didn't get to order much since we had been eating before and decided to drop by to try a few items, but we'll definitely be back. The only thing that really bothered us was the service. If we hadn't waved a waitress down, I don't know how long we would've had to wait for our order to be taken. But as long as the food's good I'll always go back.

I know this thread is Ebisu on ROBSON but... The other night, (Sunday, Dec 23rd) I went to the Ebisu Richond location. I didn't feel the food was as good as the Robson location. The worst part was, seeing one of the male staff members leave the washroom without washing his hands! I made a mental note to remember to post this, because I know Dion will read this.
^ Should have gotten his name

Good review :) All things noted. Showed my chef what you wrote about the food. There already is shrimp paste in there but probably add more now. Also originally we did have the tail on there but they said it's quicker to make it this way now that we get so many orders but we'll consider changing it back if popular demand arises heh.
The past few weeks, due to Holidays I've been a little short on waitresses and it's been a lot busier than expected too but I'll be hiring some more soon. :(

EW that is disgusting!! :Puke:
I will call the manager there immediately and inform her to notify ALL the staff about practicing good sanitary behaviour, that is unacceptable. :chop:
PS. BTW it's Deon not Dion, common mistake heh

^^^ Hehe... one chef I worked with was PICKING HIS NOSE in front of customers while working at the sushi bar!!! A customer came to me and insisted I make her sushi, and told me about him. Of course he got a talking to by the owner. Ugh.
