I've never seen a karage come with mayo...

I've not gone before, but that $25 deal looks freaking awesome.
I will make it a point to go for that.
Aside from the stuff in the combo deal, I keep hearing things about oyster fries?
What are they?

The Chicken Karaage comes with a choice of any 2 sauces:
Spicy Ketchup, Honey Mustard or CAJUN MAYO ... your friends must have ordered the other 2 sauces instead lol ... :p

Were you sitting in the booth in the back? ... thanks for coming down! :)

The $25 promotion starts November 1st and it's limited supply, only 150 packages are available, first come first serve! (and yes it is an AWESOME deal, can't believe I'm doing this, it's like super cheap haha, pitcher of Sapporo alone is already like half that price)

The Oyster Fry?... it's a "secret item" haha... well it used to be on the menu but it wasn't as popular as we thought it would be so we replaced it but some regulars (*ahem* fliptuner) still LOVE it, so we make it for them. No problem!

You lazy bums lol, click onto that website for full details, ... but since I'm already writing this...

The package becomes available on Tuesday, November 1st for dinner. The first day of availability to purchase for those "Dining Passes" (sort of like Groupon) also becomes available on November 1st, 12:00am sharp, we will only sell 150 packages and that's it. You also must use the package before the end of November, that's the easy part, the hard part is to make sure you GET a package before it's soldout!

My paypal confirmation email only provides the $25 charged. No barcode or anything like how Groupon shows.

Hmm... unless all 7 of you get full really easily I don't think it will fill you up. I would recommend getting 2 packages and then order a few more tapas to round it out ;)

^
I could be mistaken, but the point of only 1 single voucher is that they get as many different people through their doors as possible. It's to elevate their presence and brand recognition, not to get us good deals.

And cause of this deal... it'll be my first time through their doors.

fliptuner
11-02-2011, 04:33 PM
I think it's to both get existing customers a good deal and bring in new business.

Thing is I usually bring new customers with me anyways and if I wanted to buy more than 1 voucher, I still would with a 1/purchase setup, it would just take longer.

Obsideon
11-02-2011, 09:35 PM
Culverin is bang on, because this is a KILLER DEAL that we pretty much lose money on, I was hoping to gain more exposure to a wider audience and to get people (new and old) to come in with friends and have some fun! (and possibly to come back in the near future even without this deal) ... this is extreme exaggeration but if 1 person bought all the passes and never brought anyone new, it would be a HUGE hit in the wallet :heckno:

Drinks: Is all up to personal preference, if you are a sweet cocktail drinker, the Golden Balls & Blue Moon are really popular. There's big selection of beers ranging from Sapporo on tap to specially Japan-shipped in Asahi Blacks. Sangria's, wine, SAKE ... whatever you wish to get inebriated with, we shall provide :D

Food: I recommend the huge Chicken Karaage, good deal on super fresh raw oysters, Metaiko Yakiudon, or a wide selection of the original specialty rolls like Ocean Red or BC Blazer, etc ...

Honestly there's quite a lot to choose from on both the drink and food menu, it all depends on what you're craving, more seafood or meat, cooked or raw... hehe... endless possibilities!

Just a heads up, our draft beer line chiller broke down last night so ...

Bad News: No draft tap beer tonight

GOOD NEWS: Due to this issue, ALL of our Daily Drink Specials will be available tonight (and possibly tomorrow, but I should have the new compresser parts in by tomorrow afternoon!)
That means all of the available are in effect:
Monday - $2 OFF Hot & Cold Bamboo Sake
Tuesday - $4.50 for all Cocktails
Wednesday - $12 Pitchers of Sapporo (well this won't be applicable today though for obvious reasons lol)
Thursday - $3 OFF Pitchers of Red or White Sangria
Friday - 10% OFF any bottle of Premium Sake
Saturday - 10% OFF any bottle of Red or White wine
Sunday - $15 for a bucket of 4 bottles of Kokanee (probably most preferable for the people craving beer heh)

I was there on Saturday night for Steve's reso, the big long table by the washroom, and my god, you may as well have had a monkey serving me!

The girl with the long, straight hair, kinda big head.. Was horrible! She took orders for a few people, disappeared to chat for half an hour, then came to take my drink order, after others food had arrived. I was so pissed off cause halfway through my order she just walked away and chatted with other servers for 30 mins more while all the people at my table that hadn't ordered were complaining about being starving.

I had to wait 20 mins for my bill and ended up having to ask twice. The food was decent (karrage was huge!) but you really need to work on the training.

^ I assure you on Saturday night, nobody really has anytime to chat, it was super busy that night. Especially for "half an hour" which is quite excessive ... I remember Steve's table, crazy gong show, original reservations for 24 people but turned out to be over 30 (maybe 35-40 people), and everyone was standing around everywhere because I didn't have any extra tables to give them for the unexpected doubling of the party ... sorry about that though I'll get a clarification from the server when I see her tonight. It's not normally like this but the server that night was seriously flustered with 15 guys crowding around her and everyone asking her questions at the same time while she was also trying to serve you guys, but I do apologize for your less than satisfactory experience that evening... :(

Stopped by earlier for the vaneats promo and had some oysters during happy hour too!
First time trying raw oysters. It was actually pretty good! didn't even have a raw taste to them lol.
Thunder fries were hot and crispy, and the tiger prawns were quite large :sweetjesus:
The chikuwa cheese, tuna tacos and chicken karaage were pretty good also.
Only thing that was mediocre were the sliders...there was too much of that sweet sauce? lol
Anyways, had a good experience. Will be back for more oysters!

I believe her name was eliza. she was like oh sorry it was heavy. jesus the other girl who brought out our food was skinnier than you and she could even even carry it.... all I think is "eliza" needs more training. other than that it was okie.

Deon,

For my first time there, quite impressed.
Decor was above expectation.
Food was all around solid, staff was friendly, but I guess was a bit busy.
Maybe could have used just a tiny bump in attentiveness, but they were warm and friendly.

I know that kamei has something like a 3 items combo for $.$$ price.
You might consider something like this as well. It'd make like a good way to sell snack food with drinking. Kind of like the combo, probably a little less food and obviously without the beer for close to $20ish, that'd be pretty sweet.

The tuna was good.
I'll definitely be back again.

Hey Deon, the Canucks draw card for your restaurant says "no purchase necessary" but you do have to buy a pitcher of beer in order to draw a card, correct? Just a little confusion there, you might want to clarify with customers.. Cuz your server didn't do a really good job of explaining it..
Posted via RS Mobile (http://www.revscene.net/forums/announcement.php?a=228)

Obsideon

^ I think the servers didn't explain it very well because it is complicated in that it involves some government policies and codes, the contest is actually run by Granville Island Brewery, we just promote it. Nobody has ever asked us that question or paid attention to the fine print hehe... even I'm not entirely sure about the reasoning.
Do you notice that all those Labatt Coors Light and other beer commercials on TV that have prize giveaways (Budweiser Camp with dozens of hot chicks running around half naked comes to mind hehe) always end with "No Purchase Necessary" in their advertisements even though you technically need to buy a case of their beer to win?

Here's a reference for you to you take a browse through (I just googled it lol):

Why do contests say "no purchase required"?
March 21, 2006
Dear Straight Dope:

I've always wondered, why do so many contests have "no purchase necessary" in their rules? It seems like every contest I've ever seen on candy wrappers and fast food joints and whatever else, always specifies that you can enter the contest by contacting them with a post card or going through their website rather than buying their product. Is there some sort of tax loophole here where they save money if they allow people to enter without buying the product? Is it just a publicity stunt (although I don't know of anyone who has actually taken advantage of it)? Or is it just tradition? What are they up to?

— Eric Hanson, Little Rock, Arkansas

Eric, you've obviously given this a lot of thought--you've named three excellent possibilities. Unfortunately, they're all wrong, so it's up to me to give you the straight dope.

The explanation has to do with U.S. broadcasting laws. The Federal Communications Commission has a section in its rules called the "lottery" law. Under federal law, lotteries are illegal. Some lotteries, anyway. Not state or multi-state lotteries--those are OK under the lottery law. What's verboten are what the average person thinks of as contests. Confused? Just wait.

If a broadcaster wants to promote a contest, whether in a paid commercial or as a station promotion, he or she has to answer the three lottery law questions:

1.Is a prize being offered?
2.Is there chance involved in the selection of the winner (i.e., drawing a ticket)?
3.Does the consumer have to buy something to enter the contest? (This is called "consideration" by the FCC.)
If the answer to all three is "yes," then the promotion is a "lottery" and can't be broadcast. One "no" and the lottery law doesn't apply and can be broadcast.

Let's imagine you're a promotion director in charge of a contest. Which question would be the easiest to say "no" to?

1.If there's no prize there's not going to be much excitement, is there?
2.How will we select the winner? Not much choice there, is there?
3.There's your answer! Provide a way for those who don't wish to buy anything to enter the contest (postage stamps and a reasonable length of time driving to a location are exempt from this).

Back in my radio days, we gave away a trip to Hawaii provided by a new sponsor. We met with the sponsor's representatives and decided to do a "scavenger hunt" type of contest. One of the items required was an empty box of the sponsor's product. To avoid the "lottery designation" that would produce, the day we announced that particular item on the air, we also announced that anyone wishing to could pick up a free box of the sponsor's product at the radio station, or simply write the sponsor's name on a 3x5 card, and include that as part of the final hunt loot. See how that worked?

Note that this applies only to broadcast media, not print media. However, if a contest campaign in print also is being broadcast somewhere, then it must also contain the "no purchase required to enter" disclaimer.

Canadian law is a little different and applies to all media, both print and broadcast. They allow the "consideration" angle as long as the "chance" part is offset by a "skill" requirement. For instance, in a contest involving drawing a winner's name from a box of entries, a Canadian station could require an entrant to purchase the sponsor's product to enter. The winner would have to perform a "skill" test, such as correctly answering a mathematical or trivia question. Free entries as an alternative to the "skill tests" are being discussed, but as of right now the general consensus in Canada is to use "skill tests" to avoid running afoul of the law.

Came for happy hour, loved the honey garlic wings, I don't remember them being so good haha. The jalapeno shrimp and the fries that came with it were good too.

One actual complaint though, nachos were a decent portion but the tiny glass ramekins you guys use for the dips clearly weren't meant for such a large serving of nachos, and the fact that you charge for more dip is upsetting ($1 for another tiny ramekin? :fuckthatshit:) We weren't hungry so we just ditched half the plate of nachos but it doesn't change the fact that you guys are quite greedy with the dip.

Thanks for coming by again. Glad you liked the wings and shrimp!

About the nachos though, at Happy Hour we aggressively priced them at $8.50 for the monstrous platter plus cheese and beef with dipping sauces. I haven't ordered nachos at other restaurants in quite a while now but if memory serves me correctly most places charge roughly $12-16? We already provide 3 different kinds with tomato salsa, guacamole and sour cream when most places serve 2 dips. I'll be honest to the folks on Revscene, the dips aren't cheap, it's probably more expensive then the actual nachos themselves lol ... so our solution would be to either raise the price (Foundation on Main street charges approximately $20 for all the toppings and sauces) or cut down the amount of chips so that you can effectively scoop up all the saucey goodness with minimal leftover ... OR keep the current setup and request that there be a small charge for re-fills of the sauces. (btw it's $2 if you want to refill all 3 again so essentially it's around 10 bucks for SIX sauces and the fully-loaded nachos ;) ) ...
I'm not saying it's you and friends in particularly that's using a lot of dip lol but I find that most people are ok to finish the platter with the dip provided, myself included haha

Thanks for the feedback it's always greatly appreciated!

I was there for the same thing, it was great!

I also saw someone get Sashimi, Oysters, and more in this HUGE bowl of ice, I think it was called Ice Break? Ice Breaker? Gotta try that next time.

Ebisu Flair was great except the algamo duck salad. The duck was dry and tasteless, it just had a unpleasant taste.

Hey Deon! came over for my friend's bday on saturday night

Awesome service as always, our server (forgot her name, started with an M I think) was always attentive and quick to clean up after our messes :P

What's going on with your guys' sound system, there'll be times where there is no music and times where the music is too loud and everything in between lol! Is someone just dicking around with an ipod back there? haha

Had a great time and expecting nothing less when I come back this saturday for K3lv's bday

^ Haha I was making a Flaming Lambo in that pic wasn't I? :p Thanks for dropping by and I'll see you again this Saturday!
Regarding the sound system, yeah sometimes it depends on the song, some are louder than others for some weird reason ... not sure how to streamline it ... I'm playing off iTunes and they are usually songs transferred from my staff's iPod's.
The other times when there is no music is usually because we have to play the Happy Birthday song for a specific section of the restaurant so we turn off the other speaks so that the entire restaurant isn't blaring it.

hmm that's weird, a lot of people actually said that the salad was the highlight of the meal ... did the server forget to pour the dressing on top? Do you mind telling me which day you came to eat? I'll have to talk to chef about that. Thanks for the feedback and hopefully it will be better next time you visit!

you music files need to be at least 320kbps and up

chances are some of the music files are like 128 and stuff

which causes the sound quality to vary from track to track

Just a friendly comment/reminder, I've used the Ebisu Flair deal from Vaneats twice and each time the bill would still have them rung up at $20 on the bill when they should be $0 (only charging the tax on the $20).

Whatever music player you use, you should be able to set it to automatically detect and adjust replay gain. That way, your songs will all come out within the same volume range.

I think imported tastes a lot different than the one licensed to Canadian breweries. I was at Ebisu a while ago, and a week before I went I had some from any liquor store, the one in the restaurant was a lot better in terms of taste.

Obsideon

It really depends, the only real imported beer that I know of is the Asahi Big Boys, ALL the other beer is brewed elsewhere. Check the bottles next time you have one, it will probably say "Product of USA" or "Product of China" ... or "Brewed in Quebec" but most of them will say "Under the supervision of Sapporo/Asahi/Kirin Breweries in Tokyo, Japan" which is pretty much BS lol ... they basically brew it in some random city in China but they have ONE guy sent in from Japan to sit at the brewery so now all of a sudden it's authentic Japanese beer ... :fuckthatshit:
I think most beer tastes better on tap then in bottles. Especially Guinness and Japanese beer. Especially since Ebisu washes and maintains their draft lines so it's in perfect condition all the time, clean, clear, crisp... beer :sweetjesus:

Went on Saturday night, first time at the Broadway location. I have to say it has a surprisingly different atmosphere than Robson. The staff are much older but polite and it seemed more family dinner oriented than drinking.

Can't complain about the $8.50 pitchers though. After we had a pitcher/person they told us they ran out and I thought it was because they wanted our loud asses to leave, but from the post above it seems like they actually do run out.
