Went tonight, and everything was pretty good  Only complaint is that they ran out of Sapporo near end of closing.
Went on Saturday night, first time at the Broadway location. I have to say it has a surprisingly different atmosphere than Robson. The staff are much older but polite and it seemed more family dinner oriented than drinking.
Can't complain about the $8.50 pitchers though. After we had a pitcher/person they told us they ran out and I thought it was because they wanted our loud asses to leave, but from the post above it seems like they actually do run out.
Going to be back many times...

Sorry for running out of stock I actually had to ask one of the kitchen prep guys to personally drive 2 kegs over from Robson because the response so far has been overwhelming! We will make sure the manager over at the Broadway location orders more for the following weeks so we won't run out!
Thanks RS! :fullofwin:

Went yesterday for the first time with Vansterdam before the Wiz concert and I have to say I'm very impressed. Nice decor and the food was great. Can't wait to go back when I'm not in a rush. The raw oysters were great, are they only $1 on Tuesdays?
and it was good meeting you Obsideon.

beer awesome, oysters were good, but i noticed the sashimi special was lacking, 5 different kinds of sashimi ended up being salmon, spicy salmon, tuna, spicy tuna, and negitoro (which was the best of the bunch) and supper small portions. I guess you cant expect much for 13 dollars..

Robson, it would be best to make a reservation ;)

Hidden camera shows underage teens served alcohol - British Columbia - CBC News (http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/story/2012/11/15/bc-hidden-camera-underage-drinking.html)
A CBC News hidden-camera investigation has caught half of the B.C. Lower Mainland restaurants that it tested selling alcoholic drinks to minors.
In the investigation, a group composed of three 18-year-olds and one 17-year-old was sent to four establishments. The CBC asked the three males and one female to order alcohol, but not to drink it if they were served. Provincial laws prohibit anyone under 19 years old from being served or sold liquor.
All four teens went together to Ebisu restaurant on Robson Street in Vancouver where they ordered a pitcher of beer and were served within minutes of sitting down.
The same night, the Keg Steakhouse & Bar on Still Creek Avenue in Burnaby served red wine to two of the 18-year-olds, who went in as a couple. Another Keg waitress served beer to the two other teens who were sitting in the bar area.
All four left their drinks untouched and later left.
Outside the restaurant afterwards, the teens offered their own theories about why they were served.
"It was just really casual,” said Jack Hu, 17. "I guess [the server] just thought we were older."
Aidan Ponton, 18, said he suspected the waitress sympathized with them.
"I guess she just saw us, just some younger kids and she knew what it was like, she'd been in that position before and she didn't hesitate," Ponton said.
When later confronted with the results of the CBC News investigation, the management at Ebisu said they were shocked and embarrassed and promised to be more vigilant in checking identification.
A Keg spokesperson admitted its servers did not follow procedures and the restaurant chain will now redouble its training.
The teens also visited the Cactus Club and Boston Pizza, on Lougheed Highway in Burnaby. Both restaurants asked for government-issued identification and when the teens couldn't produce it, they were refused service.
The penalty for a first offence ranges from $7,500 to $10,000 or a 10-to-15- day licence suspension. Licensees can either accept the penalty or request an enforcement hearing.
CBC News has also learned the provincial government has recently begun doing its own secret spot checks of restaurant compliance with the law through its Minors as Agents Program. It found that 20 out of 29 restaurants — more than two-thirds — served alcohol to underage teens.

There are many dishes you can try, if you are looking for sushi, you can try some of our speciality rolls like the BC Blazer or Saba Inferno.
There are some good meat dishes like the Chicken Karaage and Bonsai Beef is a new one. Everyone has their favourites ... hard to choose heh... but we did introduce some "personal size" dishes so you can try more varieties!
The fresh oysters are also hot sellers here :)
I was out of town the last 2 weeks, spent some time scouting in Japan.
The liquor bust was disappointing, we will definitely be stepping up our checks so don't be surprised if you're 35 and get ID'd :p

As far as I know the $8.50 pitchers are still running, probably for at least another week or 2? You can always give Broadway a call to double check.
Broadway #: (604) 876-3388
Sorry no plans for these uber cheap pitchers in the Downtown Robson branch, our rapingly high building rent simply wouldn't allow it, we would be losing so much money. :(

Obsideon
12-09-2012, 12:02 PM
More than you can afford ... ... Ferrari ...
J/K ... sorry I can't divulge that specific information but let's just say you can buy a brand new fully loaded Honda Accord and pop open a few dozen bottles of Cristal every month with the money we pay to the landlord :p
We are in the downtown core afterall ... so they just jack up the prices like no tomorrow, why do you think the Payless Shoe store downstairs is now gone, so is the Bread Garden across the street, both have been empty for months now ... all couldn't afford the rent.

Every few years we go and see if there are any talented chefs in Japan and we invite them to come to Ebisu/Kamei to either work or train and show our current chefs new things.
A lot of our chefs are flown in direct from Japan, it's not cheap, but that's how you all get delicious food :p

seriously, how do people even water down drinks?
i mean, YES you can pour LESS and not make it a full cup, or add more ice, but I jut don't now how people are so stubborn to put "WATER" into their shot bottles to try to water it down. Not only would the owner have to ask each bartender to do so, but to do it for every bottle... jut to save a a few dollars. if that....
^^^
gosh i didn't expect anyone to interpret my post so literally. no shit sherlock you don't pour water into alcoholic shot... i'm sure you get the point

Yes, I went there yesterday and received both of those specials menus. Had the Royale Dinner Boat and found it to be a decent value for $19.95/person. $8.50 Sapporo pitchers still going strong.
Parking underground $4 after 6PM, $2 refunded by validating at Ebisu, garage closes at 10PM.

To be straight up honest I'm not sure how or where other places are getting their unagi, but our suppliers have seriously jacked up the prices on unagi recently so it's very difficult for us to keep it cheap, we are already trying our best to keep the cost low without going under :( ...

Good question, after eating every dish like a million times ... most of the dishes are still good. I kind of go through "phases" if you will. Last month I found myself craving Asari Pasta, Shogun Mini-Mix (Mini Chirashi, healthy haha) and the Stamina Beef Don. I'm usually eating myself so I just get a rice/noodle entree. Also can't go wrong with the fresh oysters hehe ... always eating those!... hmm what else when I come back to eat ... Tiger Mayo, Tuna Tataki ... actually the list goes on and on ... if I didn't like the dish I would have taken it off the menu haha ... I can tell you what I DON'T eat ... California Rolls ... lol haven't had one of those in years! :p

^ i've been to A LOT of places that charges for tea. seriously obsideon, don't worry about it. the 1.5 ain't going to get someone to run away. the key is to have DECENT good Japanese tea with individual pots to justify it, if you're using cheap tea then screw the 1.50 thing.

i don't know about this. technically you're suppose to savor all the natural juices from it and rinsing it is a huge no no. if there are shells = your schucker really sucks. oh well, i totally know where you're coming from.
Obsideon
08-01-2013, 05:57 PM
I meant the $1.50 for tea plus personal pot is standard in Downtown.
Oysters, I know it's definitely more flavourful to have all the natural juices in the shell, we used to do that and our shuckers are pretty good but with cheap $1 oysters. Two people have to plough through about 700+ oysters in 2-3 hours, there's sometimes bit of shell and/or sand in them so to avoid that potential problem we give it a quick rinse, that said we also don't powerwash the oysters so there should still be juice still in there ;)

I totally disagree with rinsing them at all. Even if it's in a rush.
Maybe you have an extra cook you move to oyster duty when it's cheap oyster hour (or night?).
Perhaps it's unfair to compare with Coast, but if you are really moving that much volume, then it sounds like you've got some actual pros on hand.
I'm pretty sure when they are slammed during happy hour, that they still don't rinse. It's just about technique.
And while you can't get every single oyster perfect, just like everything else in the kitchen, there is always a bit of wastage.
My suggestion,
Don't rinse, only send out perfectly shucked ones.
Keep a "discard" bucket of the problematic oysters, ones with the shells in them.
Rinse those off at the end of service, and recycle them into something else like fried oysters? While I'm sure "per oyster", they would cost you guys more for those fried oysters.
However, there are some small benefits:
- All your shucked ones go out perfect and correctly (without rinsing).
- You have a stash of nicer oysters to fry.
- You can fry them and sell them as a "premium fried oyster special". Once they are gone, they are gone.
You increase quality.
Recycling to minimize wastage.
And you have another early bird incentive, premium fried oysters.
Not that I should be telling you how to run your own restaurant

FYI there is a Red Tide warning on oysters right now so be careful eating them. Ebisu won't be serving them for the next few days (at least) until they are perfectly fine to eat again. If you are craving some, get some off-shore oysters, Kamei Baru has a delicious few different kinds that are safe to eat!

The Tsukune Don is minced chicken meat so it's really soft. The fish taste must be from the sauce, we use yakitori (BBQ) sauce mixed with some Udon soup (which contains a bit of fish stock)

Parking underground isn't free. After 6PM it costs $4, Ebisu will refund you $2 when you pay for your bill. The parking garage locks up at 10PM so remember to move your car before then.
I asked the staff at Ebisu Broadway why the parking isn't free (the Ebisu signage outside claims free parking) and no one could give me an answer.

I was not aware that they changed from full parking reimbursement to half-reimbursement! I will have to bring that up to the management immediately.
And yes the parking garage gets locked after 10pm but it's still ok, the security guard can always open it up for you, just push the buzzer at the building entrance.

I've personally tried most of these (more than once lol) and they are pretty darn good!
For those of you who have been to the Broadway location, is the place wheelchair accessible? And is parking horrible? I plan on taking my family - wedding anniversary. 30 something (lost track after 30, LOLOLOLOLOL). My mom is in wheelchair - that's why I ask. I need to make reservation ASAP and they are closed ATM.
BTW, Obsideon, sent you pm.

Which dish are you referring to? The Calamari Spinach Salad?
For Kamei Baru,

The upstairs can fit up to 45 people or more if you don't mind to squeeze, Dannie Riel had her party upstairs and I think they had closer to 50+ people.
There is no minimum but they will probably need about 2 days advance notice for reservation.
Any other questions you can call them directly at 604-559-8588 as they will be more clear :)

What's the actual name for the "cheese sticks" at Broadway?
Obsideon

It's a special "cheese stick" that's found in an order of the "Thunder Yam Fries", you could specifically order the cheese stick on it's own if you want :)

I am not Dion, but I am Deon ;)
The Wagyu Kobe beef, we are still considering it. If we do though it won't be at the door crashing price of $4 anymore as we were selling it below cost as a test phase. We need to consider if it's worth selling because spoilage of such a high-end meat would hurt.

really disappointed with my last ebisu visit in January. The whole menu felt like a chain restaurant where a dish can be prepared in a certain time and be rushed. As an employee who has worked in a fast paced kitchen environment, the dishes that came out looked medicore in terms of taste / pricing and it felt like I can get "more" in terms of quality in some areas. (Maybe garnishes or more servings). This especially goes for the sashimi plates
If the Canucks make the playoffs and I maintain my fantasy hockey lead, I'll swing by before the game I get tickets to.
Otherwise, maybe during the summer depending if I get any time off from my new job.

Verdasco,
Thanks for your feedback! Because of the size of the restaurant (over 250+ seating capacity) we have to include some dishes that are more easily to prepare and serve in a timely manner.
However we do have many specialty dishes on the menu as well, what did you order that you felt needed to be "more" ?

All I can think right now on top of my head is the tuna tataki, it is odd having an image stuck into your head when you see one bad dish but have 10x as good in one night but customers do not remember the good ones as much as the bad ones.
The image I see when getting served the tuna tataki is super thin slices of tuna on a large piece of leaf with barely any garnish. The item did not represent the thick pieces on the menu and 100% sure it was under garnished. It felt like the dish could be made in under a minute and it felt like it could be "more" in everything.
It has been a few months so I do not remember much but I really love the oyster motoyaki and fish taco. Great flavour for both dishes and the bread definitely worked wonders with the motoyaki.

Was there last night with a friend. The chicken karage felt like there was barely any meat in it this time. Maybe it's because I had most of the battered up pieces. Usually, they're really big and juicy (srs).
Other than that, I had a great time.. Gotta love those super mugs :D

Hey Boss,
I went to Ebisu for happy hour with my sisters last night, and we felt that the oysters were kinda off =\ They we'rent cold, and they seemed to have a bite to them, unlike before when they were really soft and creamy. My littlest sister and I felt a bit off a few hours later. The second sister has a bit of an iron gut, but yesterday was really a one-off experience :(

I love the food at Ebisu the only thing is sometimes the dishes are served on such huge plates such as the sashimi that comes in the huge bowl. takes up alot of space on the table if you order a lot of dishes, it becomes crowded. other then that i always enjoy my time at ebisu!

Heyheys,
Normally the oysters are best in the months that have the letter "R" in it. It's not a strict rule but that could be the reason the oysters are not in the best condition. However they are still ok to consume or else we won't serve them.
Thanks for the heads up I'll let the chef know about that!
Sorry for the queasy belly :(

I came last week for dins and liked the new menu. However, did you guys ever have soupy udon? Or is that only available at Kamei?
Anyways, Deon just wanted to give our compliments to one of your new servers (didn't catch her name) but I overheard her say it was only her 2nd shift (we went on Thursday) and she was fantastic! Her energy and her smile was so positive that it resonated with our dining experience. As someone who is in the field that is solely based on customer service I would have hired her in a heartbeat.
I asked another waitress and she said she forgot her name too..but it sounded like..Veronica?? The new waitress is a mix if that helps.

So I found out to my pleasant surprise that I'll be working across the parking lot from Ebisu Richmond for the next month. Went there for lunch today with my fellow out of province project managers after bragging about how good the Robson location is. Hate to say but the experience I had there definitely wasn't up to par with what I'm familiar with at the Robson store.
Our meal consisted of the following:
Spicy beef gyoza
Thunder fries
Beef teriyaki and yakisoba
Chicken teri don
Tempura
Sashimi combo b
Chicken teri and roll boat
The tempura and gyozas were saturated in grease, the beef/yakisoba lacked in taste, and the rest was merely "meh." Also, maybe the store was simply short staffed this afternoon, but we had a hell of a time trying to flag down a server to simply order.
Hoping this was just a bad day. Gonna try going again on Monday for dinner to see if I have better luck. Would try tomorrow but the power will be out. :okay:
