Review: EBISU on Robson

Here's the update in which you have all patiently waited for. ;)
So as you all know the name now will be: EBISU
Details
Grand Opening: Date has been once again DELAYED to be DEC. 20th, 2006, it is NOW 100% set in CONCRETE so let's get the good times rollin'!
Location: 827 BUTE ST. (right on the corner of ROBSON, 2nd floor. Above Payless Shoes, same intersection as Moxies, Earls and SteamRollers.)
Phone No. - (604) 689-8266
There were major and minor problems that have come up the last few months, approval of licenses, leaking roof, broken heater/air conditioner, delays in my orders for chinaware, chairs, tables, decors, cutlery, glasses, etc. I have ordered many things from abroad (Japan, Italy, etc.) so some of those companies are tied up which results in more delays for me.
Now to answer some of your concerns:

Take some pictures of your restaurant and post them here when it's done. I'm sure there are many of us who would like to see the decor.
willystyle - I'm not sure if I want to post pics of the decor on here as it will ruin/dull the overall experience of actually being there to take in the ambience but maybe I will. =)

sh0n - Online menu set along with the website will be a bit later on as there are more pressing issues at the moment (getting the doors opened haha)

Cool, thanks. Will you guys be open for lunch, or dinner only?
RevSceneGirl25 - When we first open we will only be doing dinner to get into the groove of things first and then we will decide when to start opening for lunch, perhaps a month or 2 later.

Senna4ever - hmm.. I am not aware of it, but I doubt it since City Hall has approved my license to use that name, unless THAT establishment isn't licensed or it's not really a restaurant.

spiritofevil99 - Read further down there is some pretty interesting info regarding this issue. =)

PLEASE provide white-style service. don't make it a typical asian or japanese restaurant. I haven't been to EVERY single chinese/japanese/pho place but almost all of them give crappy service. Even high end chinese places treat their customers like crap. ie $40+ a person.
Autorice - I will try my utmost best to provide the best service humanly possible!

On to other matters:
I've come to a decision that ALL RS people, friends, family and whoever else new and old are welcome to check out the new restaurant!
I will be issuing 25, yes, 25% Promotion cards to anybody and everybody that's interested as a Grand Opening special, get them while you can, they're hot!
Now for the very helpful people that I mentioned on the list in the other thread, in addition to getting the 25% Promotion card you will ALSO receive a VIP Access card which entitles you to 10% AND a FREE Appetizer to get your night rollin'! The VIP cards are VERY limited.
If your name is on the list please PM me your real name so that when you drop by you can show me some sort identification for verification. :)
The list of potential VIPs are:

Oh and another note.
I am still looking for people to fill various positions:
Waitress/Hostess/Cashier/Kitchen Helpers
If your interested please PM me. You can then either Email, Fax or drop it off personally to me.
Oh to those that PM'd me a few weeks ago sorry I took a bit longer than intended to respond but I never got a reply back, which is kinda rude. :flamemad:

congrat to your new restaruant!
is it going to be AYCE or other style?
Obsideon
10-27-2006, 04:35 AM
WhiteVitz: Get with the program! Haha j/k, anyways no this new hotspot will definitely NOT be AYCE, yet easily affordable. AYCE would totally ruin the ambience, and quality of food.
Well as of this moment I'm not exactly sure what I'm planning on doing. Well the main trunk of it would be Japanese obviously. Then it could possibly branch off into many many different styles. Western, izakaya, sushi/sashimi. It could possibly be an explosion of many different cultures and ideas! You should come check it out for yourself!
One thing's for sure is there will definitely be lots of drinks! Cheap beer! Fancy *ahem-Delicious* cocktails (I created some myself, they are GOOD! :p). a wide selection of some of the best tasting and most premium Sakes in the world! Wines, Sangria, and pretty much anything else you want, I can do!.. :D
NOTICE:
I forgot one very important thing that many of you have pointed out to me, and that is..
HOW DO I GET THESE CARDS?!
Well stupid me, in the midst of all this excitement I forgot to state such an important issue.
1. The 25% Promotion cards I might have some trouble getting them passed along. I will be giving out a stack to a few people (some are active on RS) to help me pass out to other fellow RS'ers and to their friend's and families. If possible I would like some other volunteers (preferably if I already know you) to help out as well.
hamsup will be one of them so you can harrass him for the cards! :evil
Also I will be placing a batch at other restaurants to be passed out by their staff. The list of branches you can pick them up are as follows:
EBISU - 827 Bute St. (on the corner of Bute & Robson, old Hooters) ~ I will be there most of November setting up so if you happen to be strolling along on Robson you can pass by and pick one up directly from me, my name is Deon
Kamakura Japanese Cuisine - 601 W. Broadway (behind Bread Garden, beside London Drugs)
Kamei Royale - 211 - 1030 W Georgia, Vancouver (on the corner of Alberni & Burrard, 2nd floor, across from the Vancouver Hotel)
Taisho Japanese Restaurant - 15E-4700 Kingsway (inside Metropolis, you can't miss it, across from T.G.I.F.)
Rz Tapas and Sushi - 100-8111 Ackroyd Rd. (Same Parking lot as Chapters.. it's across the street from White Spot and Boston Pizza, can't miss it along No. 3
Daimasu Richmond - 8300 Granville Avenue (Between Garden City and No. 3)
There's 2 other locations but I probably won't have enough, but if I make anymore I will post'em up! :\
ok next..
2. The VIP cards which are issued to the select few can be obtained when they arrive at the new location and present their identification to me

sounds like evisu..the jean company
Is this restaurant owned by Japanese or another asian race?
i can't stand going to chinese or viet owned japanese restaurants.
Must be Authentic!
anyways good luck opening

You have the VIP cards ready?
If so, We could just go to the new store(Ebisu) before it opens and find you to obtain it?
We also get the Normal card's as well from you?(VIP Members)

Congrats on the soon to be grand opening!
I personally like izakaya style japanese food, but any good japanese food will be an awesome addition to my dining out list.
In terms of the VIP cards, should we ask for you directly when we arrive? (and what is your non-RS name if thats the case), or will whoever greets your guests at the door be aware that there are people who may come to pick up VIP cards? (just so I don't arrive and ask for a VIP card because I was one of the people from RS and the person there thinks i'm crazy)

The one by the library is called Ebi Ten. It's a really small joint with only about 8 items to choose from. Definitely fast food style. It shouldn't cause any confusion.
Anyways, AznSiR, congrats on the restaurant. In addition to the dinner / lunch question, do you plan to open late, especially if you do more izakaya style? I hope the sake list will be a good one ... I find very few establishments here in Vancouver ever put the effort into choosing the right kinds of sakes to serve w/ their food.

ARGH! There was some 'slight' confusion in terms of getting the cards printed, but no worries they 'should' still be ready to be distributed by Nov 1st!

HOTSHOTKEN - Thanks for clarifying that. We will be open pretty late, we're gunning for midnight on weekdays and probably 1ish on weekends, but that could change as we are re-applying for a license to open even later.
About the sake, for sure it will be a great list. I have sales representatives coming in from Yoshinogawa, Hakutsuru, SCB, and throng of others trying to push their product at my establishment. I will be 'personally' :D testing all of them for quality and value along with the rest of my staff before putting it on the menu. There will be plenty to choose from!

There will most definitely be a variety of Shochu's to choose from, the simple Moonlight to the aged Enma are at your disposal, on the rocks, with lemon, hot water, up to you! Also many, many cocktails will also have Shochu infused to create a unique, delicious blend of drinks.
Also Plum Wines for dessert is great!
I'll keep you guys posted!

Ooh ... not bad. I'm very keen on trying as many different kinds of dai-ginjo as possible (& as long as they fit the pocketbook!). Looking forward to seeing the selection. Any chance to join in on the taste test? ;)
Oh, and I didn't mean to ignore the shochus or plum wines ... just not a huge fan when drinking straight up.
Cocktails ... good stuff! I have a few interesting ideas on cocktails using sake, shochu, green tea liquor, etc ... not 100% tested though! haha...
I wish I were back in Japan ... there's so many different sakes to choose from!

PS: Grand Opening Dec. 1st might have to be delayed, but I'm pushing for it to be open. I hope I don't rush it and screw everything up. I'd rather put it back a few days or a week and make sure the food/service is up to par than open it rushed and provide bad service.

I have picts of dinner just uploading them now and noticed I have tomorow off, so I will post soon.
Thanks Deon for everything and congratulations, I have a feeling you are going to do great; awsome location, good food, great service, I will be back again this week.
food was great deon. I dont care what other ppl say, the thunder fries were done to perfection. people want the yam's to be softer, but to do that, u sacrifice the thickness of the cut. smaller cut, softer. they were done perfectly, not too soft, just center core with a bite.
YOU MADE MY REGULAR DRINK INTO YOUR REGULAR DRINK!!! (vodka redbull)
The oysters were perfect, the tomosomething something, err raw octopus was great, the presentation on that was superb!
I LOVED THAT IKA thing, man it was good, you guys did it to perfection, slight char on the outside. the burntness brings out the flavor of the squid.
many thanx to you, and YAY BABY!! no.1!!! :D

Thanks for the good times!

The Ika Meshi was really unique too! Love all the great ideas and will definitely be back with my other buddies :)

Thanks for the head's up James, always great to get some good tips!
I still have a few promotion cards you can pick'em up, not many left though :(
EVO - depends on how much you eat and what you order haha .. tapas range from 3 bucks to 9ish all under $10 .. then there's the meat and seafood entrees like certified angus steak and racks of lamb for under $20 .. then there's the wide selection of cheap booze :D

12-26-2006, 10:56 PM
Are there still promotion cards available at the listed restaurants?? I made reservations to go with my gfs tmr for our late X-mas dinner.
ebisu is first and foremost a restaurant.
so you will be treated no differently than say white spot, u order a drink, they ask to check ur id. simple as that.
so does that mean its closed to 19+?? nope, u can go there, eat, but if u want to order alcohol and ur under 19, prepare to get id'd and denied.

So I went there tonight for a late X-mas party with the girls. Couldn't score a last minute discount card but that's ok.
Everything was quite yummy and everyone satisfied at the end of the meal. I fell in love with the tako...something....the little bits of octopus in the cucumber thing and had 3 of them. The chicken karaage, the samurai roll also stuck out and the tiger mayo. Yum yum.
I regret not ordering the Smoked Black Cod since it smelled so damn good when the waitress walked by with it. And now thinking about it I think we ordered the smoked duck but didnt' get it but oh wells, we were stuffed. The only odd part was the waitress stopping me from ordering more when I was going down the menu, guess she was right since we did have enough food.
Will definately be back again sometime in the near future.

I was there last night too!
The food was good. I like the tiger mayo and agedashi tofu.
The biggest problem was that the table they put us at was too small!
We ordered a lot, and the food came out so quick. There was no room to put all the plates. No time to savour, we were just constantly eating to make room.
The towelettes at the beginning were a nice touch though. Good suggestion :)
Everyone was full at the end though. It only cost a bit more than all you could eat. Maybe it's cause we filled up on the oriental nachos though. We were trying to figure out what made it oritental, cause it looked like regular nachos =D

i went there last night.
the food was good, and the presentation was super!
alcohol was cheap, and lots to choose!
but i think they should add robata? (little meat/fish/veggie grilled a stick) stuff on the menu. those things are great with beer/drinks. that's just my suggestion.
oh, and if the menu had a little picture of the food, it'd be very nice. i don't like to read the little description personally, i'd read it if the thing looked interesting. the cover of the menu itself was very eye catching~
other than that, i like the atmosphere and presentation.
the food lack a little flavour
1. tiger mayo had no taste i had to drown the shrimp into the sauce
2. the spicy-ness with the pan-fried noodle cover the taste of the dish
3. California roll was cool!
4. Asari (clam) pasta had decent amount of calms, i liked
5. Chicken karrage was a little plain as well, like the tiger mayo
but i like that almost every dish had a dipping sauce tho!
i will visit again soon, thanks Deon!

Thanks for the feedback!
grock: Izakaya Tapas, Sushi rolls (Specialty chef creations), Sashimi, pasta, burgers 'n sandwiches! I'm sure the selection will satisfy you :)
girlie: Which one were you? I was there, should have looked for me and said hi! I think I can still muster up a few more cards if u ask nicely! hehe Your dish was the Takowasa, it's a great appy, especially with beer/sake! Don't try to order everything in 1 try you'll regret it lol, come back more often!
iceburner: Next time you come down look for me, I would like to meet the fellow RSers that take the time and effort to come down. I'm really grateful for that! Ya and about the tables.. some of them are tad too small .. but no worries next time I'll take you to a bigger table! The nachos.. hm.. it has gone through a few stages of metamorphasis.. at first it was kinda oriental.. but didn't taste as good.. so.. well.. there might be some more changes in the future as I'm soaking in all the great feedback from all you guys and applying it in the kitchen!
Jace: Last night there were a few big tables haha! :p
Trdood: Thanks for dropping by man! There are a couple robata items on the menu already like the asparagus bacon and the yakitori .. also some of the fish is smoked too, just gotta scan the menu more carefully heh. Ya also we thought about adding pics in the menu, sorta like Kamei/Daimasu .. but I felt it didn't fit this atsmosphere as much so we opted out :( ... tiger mayo not sure what I can do .. most of the people told me it was great .. not sure what to change to make it even better... I guess everyone has difference preferences .. =\ The spicy noodles.. did you order the yakiudon + kimchi? If so then ya kimchi is a strong flavour it tends to overpower a lotta foods.. but some people love it ... next time try it just regular! :) .. thx on the other stuff .. and I'll try to spice up the chicken a bit for ya ;)

Yes that's what it was called....yumm I'm craving so takowasa now...oh and another thing I forgot to mention that was absolutely delicious was the ika menshi? Grilled squid with rice and salmon skin inside. Must make another trip back soon.

Also I'm surprised nobody has noticed that we ONLY use REAL wasabi. It's expensive stuff compared to the powdery imitation stuff that 98% of the other restaurants in Vancouver use, you can really taste the difference, when I had it I've never went back to the old stuff!

Yeah for these few weeks we're closing on Mondays so the managerial staff can have a full-on meeting about working out the kinks that might have popped up over the week, improving the food dishes that I got great feedback from (You guys + other customers) .. nitpicking the little things the servers slacked on, reworking the menu a bit here and there, taking out the less popular ones, putting in new ideas.
But we WILL be operating 7 days a week starting February (5th?) so no worries!

Yeah we aren't doing lunches right now either.
Just everything was so rushed we haven't had time to do many things, website will be up soon. Then we'll work on a lunch menu. Also need to get the chefs accustomed to the new dishes first because lunch is usually a lot more rushed with all the office people taking breaks and wouldn't be good if they had to wait 15 minutes to eat and then scarf it down in 10 minutes then sprint back LOL.. cramps a la king!
So I would prefer to get things righted and perfect before pushing it out the door kinda half assed.
That's why it took so long to open in the first place!

I'm definitely going to come back, but next time with a few more friends. It was a last minute decision and with Ducky hyping it up and all, i just couldn't hold off for another day. The food looked appetizing but just didn't hit the spot, which could have been due to the fact that I had just gotten over the flu.
Anyway, congrats Deon. The place looks like it'll be a success. Ducky introduced us sometime in the night. I was in the booth up front, across from the bar. I'll be back soon!

Thanks Deon! It was a great place to bring this new honger girl I met. I had the oyster plattter (mmmmmmmmmmm!) sangria pitcher(coulda used more booze in it!) crab tartar(delicious and creamy), soft shell crab (it was very cute, good presentation. glad i didn;t have to kill it, just eat it!) sashimi ( nice and fresh) , shrimp gyoza (very unique presentation!!), beef tataki (good texture, need more kick in the ponzu sauce, loved the garlic chips) green tea iced cream wit mango liquer (not a dessert person myself, but she liked it!) Too bad Hooters wasted such a good location. They had all the ahem talent... this place has a strong HK feel with the glass window and seating.

Went there on saturday with my g/f for dinner and I was impressed once I first walked in. Then afterwards I had to try the food to see if it's really as good as when you walk in. So I looked at the whole menu and ordered a varity of dishes that seemed appetising. All the dishes i ordered were present very nicely and tasted awsome. So I was very impressed with this new jap restruant.
Other then that there was one thing I didn't really like too much about the restraunt, was the service. I found that it was a bit slow and unattentive.

You didn't look for me?! ...haha I would have wanted to meet you! As for the service, I'm guessing it was a bit busy on saturday evening but that is no excuse! I will work hard to improve it for sure! <Takes out the whip> :evil I'll come over personally more often! But you gotta look for me and introduce yourself dude!
I'm also offering a new Sake, it's hot off the market! It's called the "G" ... I'm offering them in glasses. Usually they go for like 85 bucks a bottle! Only $5 a glass during dine-out, served on the rocks, the only sake in the world recommended to be served in ice! Tastes great!
Edit: This one is more suitable! --> :whipped: ... haha but let's just keep that to ourselves.. ahem ..

So i went there tonight for my birthday (sunday) with 7 ppl
we ordered like over 15 plates of food, everything was fantastic, all my friends loved it. THE sushi was good, but i think we shouldnt have order 4 plates of sushi, because normally sushi is sushi, u cant alter it too much to make it super special. but dont get me wrong the sushi was great, and has a unique style to each one of them. I just thought with those 4 dishes we could have order some other non sushi stuff and tried it out~~
Had a fantastic time there, my best b-day experience ever. Lol thx a lot dion, dont know wat my buddy was talkin to u about>? probably comin back next time? since everyone at my table kept sayin DAMN THIS IS GOOD
hahaha
:p
we were so busy eating and amazed by the food we TOTALLY forgot about drinks..blahhh oh well i guess next time i guess, way too overwhelmed by the food..wat can i say? we will be back next time tatz for sure

I loved the beef Yakisoba.
Only thing though, it was a little bit on the salty side. The Pale ale made it that much better :)
I have a question though, does anybody know how long in advance I would need to book a reservation for 15 people? I'm planning a dinner in 2 months and I just wanted to know if I would book it the week before or a couple days before hand :)

well i believe it was 15 dollars for 4 shots for weak ones (supermans, blowjobs etc...)
and 18 for 4 hard shots (liquid cocaine etc...)
also a pitcher of beer is 10 dollars. That's amazing value especially for the location of the place.

Sigh geez I should apologize to a lotta people on this Saturday. We were so unbelievably booked that I totally ran out of chairs/tables and there were quite a few unhappy customers cuz they were all packed too tightly that there was no room! :\
Also I realized service wasn't as up to par as usual .. it was just SO busy .. there were 4 birthday parties going on at the same time! ... must have been about 200 people in here! NYE all over again geez! I will put more staff on duty on the weekends now to rectify this problem as well! Learn from my mistakes, we been open a month, food will still be improved in some ways, the dishes that aren't too impressive will be revamped and so on.
I will address those issues right away. As of tomorrow I'm going to order a lot more chairs and some tables so that hopefully that problem doesn't happen again!

You can do take-out that's not a problem, but then the food will get cold and you won't get the cheap drinks! Haha we WILL be open for lunch, that's for sure, it's just a matter of time. It will be soon, just gotta finish up the menu's an' stuff!
The 2 cakes I got her were the Chocolate Paisano and Creme Brulee Cheese Cake. Kinda Yin Yang style. Haha both are on the Dine-out menu as well!
Yo Deon, it was great meeting you man. This is Perkin (i was with my other 2 friends interested in starting a restaurant business and my friend that forgot his Cold-FX ahah). Thanks for the advice but I bet you got a lot more tips, advice and stories to share about starting up a business lol.
I really love the atmosphere of this place and its really large too..i was surprised at the size. Like i said to you the entree but i forgot the name (clam alfredo-like dish) could be improved but overall the food was good. The appetizers are really delicious like the Soft Shell Crab Salad and Thunder Fries. I also loved the Creme Brulee cheesecake...so yummy (but i know where to get it hehe).
I also really admire the fact that you always want to improve your menu by listening to positive and negative feedback. I'm more than happy to tell you how i feel about the dishes straight up anytime lol.
But yeah i had a great time there. My friends and i want to hold our business meetings at Ebisu cuz its such a chill place with awesome drink prices.
See ya soon Deon. :D

So i visisted Ebisu tonight AGAIN with my gf.
heh staff was friendly and excellent with the service, food was served right after i ordered, and it was hot.
OVerall i was pleased.. as always
ME and my gf ordered 9 items and 2 drinks.
I think there are couple little things that brought my attention?
I realize tonight the grilled cheese scallop was on a very light to nearly no taste, perhaps i couldnt taste the saltyness despite the continous fire but no biggie things got worked out at the end? *I think there was more taste the last time i came? i can taste the cheese and the fresheness of the scallop but didnt tasted any salt, as well as the clam chowder had no taste as if there werent any salt in it?
TIger mayo shirmp tasted very fresh, except i noticed perhaps the dipping sauce could have been more saltier?
just my 2 cents, otherwise hell i will still continue be going back and bringing more friends.
Cheers
Kevin

Was there last night, don't know if you remember...we were the last group to come in around 11:00pm...3 guys, 2 girls.
Food was good, but I have one suggestion....Provide green tea like the other restaurants do. That was our only complaint. But again, the food was quite food.
Oh and btw, I had no idea one of my friends worked there on the weekends :D
Obsideon
02-09-2007, 04:23 PM
Hm .. I think I remember, not too sure though, should have told me who you guys were!
In terms of green tea I thought about that for quite a while but we are not a traditional everyday japanese restaurant. We're trying to push to be a bit more westernized. Earls/Moxie's/Cactus doesn't give out free tea, but we DO stock it at the bar. Oolong tea or the more high-end Green tea. They go for like 2 something a pot and you can refill it too so I don't think it's a big problem. We have a HUGE selection of any other drinks, many non-alcoholic and cheap, cheap beer and sake, who needs tea?! :evil
Oooh who's your friend that works here?

evilrose: Yeah it's been pretty bad the last couple of weekends, the place was completely packed with easily 180+ people and I couldn't muster up enough servers for the weekend, hard to find good help these days :( Only had 5 running around, that's almost 40 customers per server. I was running around like crazy too! I hired a few more waitresses this week and will hopefully be prepped and trained for the next weekend! Sorry 'bout that I hope I can have this issue rectified ASAP.
grock: Since we're still fairly new and I haven't done ANY advertisement (no flyers, no promos, no newspapers, nothing). I've relied on word-of-mouth to get the people in. So therefore the weekdays are still quite slow. I'm guessing it's because we are not nearly as famous as Hapa. Who's been established for many many years but I hope I can reach those heights soon since I've only been open for 2 months. The customer feedback I've got so far is that we are easily comparable if not even better than them, just that they are more busy which = better atmosphere on the weekdays, some people feel awkward chillin' in a quiet area so I totally understand. It's just that they are much more well-known so people just incentively head to Hapa for this type of dining rather than Ebisu. (for now haha)
On the flip side I highly recommend that you book a table for the weekends as we quickly pile up and every weekend we turn away throngs of people because we have no room left at all and the wait time would probably be at least 30min-1hour+ ... in the future I might consider making the weekends no-reso's but that's just an idea heh.

We were there again on Friday night, perfect place to chill out, have some food and drinks. My friends loved the fresh oysters. I have a suggestion though, we ordered the hot sake, and then asked for a bowl or plate of hot water (to keep the sake warm)...I guess kind of like how you keep your martini's cold by using another glass filled with ice....but she didn't understand us and instead brought us four glasses of hot water. Oh well.
Oh, we couldn't finish our bottle of plum wine as well...so, uh, we took it home. If you're missing a bottle, it's in my fridge. :-)

The place is great and all, but the only thing i was dissapointed in was the last time i went, there was nothing on tap at all :(

azncreationz: Haha did you ask one of those Japanese girls? Sometimes their english is not the greatest so they misunderstand.. but at least they brought you something rather than ignoring you haha. No that's not a problem, it's safe by law to take home unfinished bottles now as long as the cap is back on and you need to put it in the car where you can not access it while driving, so the trunk would be safest if you don't want to get in trouble. ;)
Chicken Balls: Haha sorry must have been couple weeks ago where I underestimated the weekend and the guys totally drank us dry! Then I couldn't order any until Monday, and they delivered it on Tuesday :( .. but since then it has never happened again. I keep extra, extra, extra stock now!
PS. I have many, many umbrellas (like 15) that customers forgot in the umbrella rack near the front door, come back and reclaim them haha! Drunkasses!

I love going to Ebsiu every week for a good weekend dinner. I see more and more hot waitresses there every week haha.
Last night was packed! Too bad I was with some random girl, otherwise I would've had some drunken fun hittin on the waitresses :D
It was good to finally meet you Deon, we'll be there again next week for sure!

Going on Friday!
What dishes do you guys recommend for a party of 3? We don't eat a lot though, and it's for a really late bday dinner for one of them.
