We still have the Ika Meshi (Grilled Stuffed Squid) it's in the Rice section, the Baby Deep fried Octopus is a new one ya.

Yeah we'll do something similar to the Dine-out menu, $25, $35 course meals but I'm not part of 'Tourism Vancouver' so I couldn't get into the official Dine-out.

Thanks for the hospitality yesterday, Deon.

I echo TRD604's thoughts about the waitresses. I <3 boobies.

Edit: Oh right, the fish taco's were fantastic.

I agree with everyone else, the food & service is great. I didn't get to check out the patio to see if you set up those outdoor gas heaters.

I had the Ebisu Gyoza for appetizer which was fantastic then I had the Karaage Chicken for dinner and it was VERY good too. Service was great and as usual, we had a great time there!

+1 for Deon and Ebisu.

i was there yesterday and i have mixed feelings. well, the food was great but the service was unsatisfactory.

we were sitting there staring at the waitresses to acknowledge us and after 15 mins of waiting after being seated we had our drink orders taken.

the table next to us kept getting orders bought to them that they did not order, and then they brought it to our table and it was not our order either. this happened about 3 times.

the girls were making an excuse that they were new, not sure if that was really the case.

i had the oysters and the thunderfries. i will be back, solely for the food.

Yesterday? I was suppose to be there but I had a pile of problems to deal with outside the restaurant so couldn't make it back so I don't know what happened with the servers or what the problem was with the food.

"the girls were making an excuse that they were new, not sure if that was really the case."

^ That is DEFINITELY the case. The problem with hiring so many Working Holiday Visa - authentic (and as many of u pointed out, hotness factor) Japanese girls is that they are all only allowed to stay in Canada for a year. So every year it's the same thing. A whole buttload of them leave at the same time and I have to hire a whole new bunch and re-train them. These few weeks is such a time. Too bad I couldn't have been there personally yesterday to see what the problem was so as to fix it quickly. Good help is hard to find :\ I can't be there 24/7.

I live a block away from this place and I avoid going there simply cuz the service sucks. I like the price of the pitchers on weekdays which was the main attraction since it's close to home/work.

edit: We always get the dishes that the table next to us ordered even when we ordered no food at all lol. The food is not good enough to keep me coming back. If it wasn't so close and didn't have booze I would probably never go here.

Obsideon

There's an Impark right behind us, but it's a little pricey. I believe it's like $3 / hour, otherwise there's other underground parking behind Bread Garden and in other alleys but some of them are pretty shady. Otherwise it's the streets. That's what's shitty about the core of Downtown :(

What are the chances of a medium sized group (let's say, 6 or less) getting in for Dine-Out next Saturday night? do you guys take reservations on weekends?

I want to get a couple people together and try it out.

Also, if your menu is regular price, how much would it be? I want to make sure it is a good deal :P

It should be after 8?

I usually park on bute, just across the street, manage to get it everytime. If not, under the london drugs a little further down robson. It's like $6-7 for 2 hours i think?

I usually only go to ebisu late nite anyways :D where parking is free after 8 for street.

i was there last night for dineout and it was quite good although the main entrees were smaller then i expected but i still left satisfied! we tried both salads but the maple duck one was by far our favorite. for entrees we chose the steak and the lobster. the lobster dish was quite salty but hell its lobster and we ate it... the salmon portion was ok as it was way overcoooked but its all good. as u can tell me and the ol lady arent picky eaters. the steak was just awesome and i wish it was bigger but oh well you cant have it all. for dessert she had the creme brule cheesecake which was fantastic as always and i had the chocolate cake. overall id give it a 8.5/10. service was good and i cant wait for next year
good stuff deon

My gf and I decided to try you guys out yesterday because rs seems to love Ebisu....
So right after we sit down and before we had a chance to look at the menu, the server comes over and asks if we are ready... Of course we say no and continue to look at the menu. We decide in about 5 mins what we want and start to talk. The servers there just either stand at the counter or complete ignore us when we try to get their attention after we were ready to order. About 10 mins later we finally get their attention and order or food and water. As the meal progressed, they forgot a couple of dishes we ordered until we "reminded" them what we ordered. However, all that stuff was ok, but what ticked us off the most was the fact that the staff took our change as it was tips. We had a $41.50 meal and gave $60 dollars. They thought we were going to give them $18 dollars in tips? When I reminded them about our change, They actually had to look for our bill and open the cash register to get the change. My gf was furious to say the least and I doubt we will ever be going back.

JSilver: Until the girls get tired or I run out. It also depends on how many other people are here hogging the beer. There will be about 20 pitchers being circulated around every hour or so.

k2_alpha: Sorry to hear about your bad experience, it always seems to happen when I take my days off. :/ I showed the girls your review and hopefully it will correct that problem so that it will not happen again in the future. The other issue ...that is very odd though my cashiers are trained to ALWAYS give back the change unless specifically told not to by the customer. There's a chance that there was a honest mistake resulting in some sort of miscommunication or error.. It's unfortunate you had to experience that on your dinner with your gf. I would like to try to make it up to you on your next visit if you ever decide to give it another shot!

went there today for lunch for mother's day....and i was very disappointed.

i chose this place cause the last couple of times i had good experiences but today...it was just disappointing.

got there...and was taken to our table..then there were no waitresses for at least 10 mins to help us...we didnt get our tea till we asked..and that was 15 mins upon our arrival...but what really pissed me off was that the table behind us came 5 mins later and they got served tea and got their orders taken.

secondly...the food...we first got our miso soup...and wow...the soup didnt even hit half of the bowl/cup...also...the food didnt arrive at the same time..it was so random. also...the appetizers came while we were eating our main course...and we HAD to ask for them too.

overall..it was a disgrace to bring my mom there...i was telling her how good it was..and then...yea....

the waitresses were really slow with everything...even with the tea when we asked for refills...and the worst part was...it wasnt even busy.

Though it is not an excuse.

The rule of thumb usually is, you should be able to serve at FULL capacity.

Im sure there's a good explanation for this. Ebisu rocks.

tatula: Sunday Lunch you say? Lunchtime is really random for us. Sometimes all the customers come at once or sometimes it's really dead in here (like 1 or 2 tables). It's a little bit difficult for me to staff the lunches. I would sometimes put 3-4 waitresses and there's nothing to do but dust the shelves for 5 hours or I put 1-2 waitresses and it's busy as hell. Even at 1/3 full it's already busy because 1 person has to order, get food, get drinks, get bills, close bills, fill drinks, get soup, etc.

Unfortunately I wasn't there at that time so I can't say for sure exactly what happened... last year Mothers day it was quite slow so I didn't think it was necessary to put extra workers this year but it's no excuse. My mistake, I hope I can make it up to you and your family in the near future.

So I went to ebisu last night and left really disappointed. Maybe I had high expectations but for a place that charges 13$ for a 'fusion' roll you would think it would be unique and amazing. It was neither. As a group of 8 some of the things we ordered were:

- spicy gyoza: dry and tasteless, way too hot (temp) to eat
- tuna taco: this is ok but nothing special. Could use more spices
- pasta: needs more flavour and better qualitybread
- yakiudon: this was one of the better dishes but I've had better at cheap hole in the wall places
- crunch and munch: waaaay overpriced for a typical caterpillar roll you can find at any ushi joint for 5$-not worth 13$

For a better experience try the eatery on broadway and alma. They have everything ebisu has and much more for 1/3 the price. The same rolls are 5-6$. The vibe is also less pretentious.

Apologies if I offend anyone with this review but just being honest.

good post.. and i am sure Deon would apprecaite the honest feed back... my curry had no flavour.. and my rolls were all mangled up... they would fall apart before even getting to my plate..

i had a huge problem with the service and food quality at the eatery. I think the best place to get the yummiest sushi would be toshi...

Interesting read.

First off there's a couple things that should be noted. Your comparing Downtown to Vancouver, most places would be cheaper, if you want even more ghetto sushi then you can look further towards AYCE in Richmond. Rent on Robson is not cheap :(

Then there's The Eatery which you speak so highly of. Been there twice, busy and not busy, service was poor, even for Canadian standards (speaking of which, all the waitresses there are Caucasion?! ... serving ... Japanese?! .. uh..)
Then there's the food. I won't assume that the Kitchen is run by non--Authentic chefs like the floor staff but from the taste of things I don't doubt it. The cooked food was very standard. Almost hole-in-the-wall ricebowl takeout style, for $12?! .. a chicken teri-don? .. I guess they have to make up for the cheapo rolls that naomi mentioned. Oh which by the way were 5-6 pieces per roll. Ebisu rolls are 8 pieces. The 6 piece rolls we have on the menu are also priced between $3 to $7.

When you dine out. I would think you factor in more than just the rolled rice you pop into your mouth. The ambiance, the presentation, the service, the entire package, big screen TV? 10 feet projector, cheap drinks? It's all part of the entire experience. Of course you can run into any small takeout shop, ask them to make you a 'Caterpillar' roll for 6 bucks and eat it on a stool. Some shops might stinge on the Unagi too which is the most expensive part of the roll but hey who knows.

hamsup: When did you have curry? Did you stop by for lunch? I'll talk to the chef later 'bout it.

With all the hype on and off RS, personally, Ebisu just isn't my cup of tea. The establishment fails to live up to a standard of a core Downtown establishment but perhaps I have particular and high expectations. I guess different strokes for different folks. Can't keep everybody happy. :)

i dont understand what standards u guys are talking about. ebisu falls in line with all those japanese/korean/chinese drinking establishments with better food. you cant compare it to white spot or some other franchised cookie cutter AYCE restaurants. prices by far are fair.

i see ebisu as more of a hang out and sure bet more than anything. to each their own...

For me, what it comes down to when I determine what is a good meal or not its is the food itself. Specifically the quality, proportions, presentation, and pricing. I go to a restaurant to eat. The things like the decor, waitresses, and entertainment come second to the food.

If I wanted to see some T&A. I would go to Joey's, Cactus, Earls etc and would know ahead of time that I would be settling for the at-par food.

I went to Ebisu for the first time last week and overall the food was just OK. The rolls could be improved on. I don't mind paying money for a good roll but it BETTER be good. Unfortunately, it wasn't worth the $12 which I paid for it.

The service wasn't poor, although it could be improved on. There were plenty of waitresses working at the time although I don't understand why most of them were standing idle. We didn't even get a "how is your meal so far?" or "would you like another drink?". This is disappointing especially considering how a tip was automatically tacked onto our bill (large party procedure I assume although we only had 7 people at our table??).

I don't want to say that my experience at Ebisu was horrible, but there definately are better alternatives in the vicinity.

What are you talking about, The Eatery is Japanese owned. If you are talking about the waitresses, I don't think they should be included when judging how authentic a restaurant is. Its not like Ebisu has all Japanese waitresses, nor do most of the Japanese restaurants in Van.

Anyways, my take on Ebisu: I agree with a few of the above posts, rolls were marginal, service was pretty bad, waitresses always standing around talking to eachother. The girls are easy on the eyes, but seriously, do you even hire girls who have service experience or u just hire any girl who will suck cock for the job. A sub-par restaurant for an above-par location.

I have to agree with most of the above, while the food is decent, the service from the waitress' is pretty horrible especially when compared to other downtown restaurants. One time in particular, our waitress spent more time flirting with me and talking to the other waitress than making sure our orders where right or checking if we needed drinks, if I wanted eye candy, I'd just go to Cactus Club. She seemed more interested in telling us about what she likes to do in her spare time and which club she was going to be at later than taking our orders and forgetting about our drinks. (previous post: The vibe is also less pretentious.)

What is wrong with white people serving japanese? Does it bother you when you walk into Joeys/Cactus Club and see asian girls serving white food? How about when you walk into Hapa Izakaya and a white girl screams hello at you in Japanese?

Besides, you'll know that the eatery isn't a typical Japanese restaurant. You can tell that just by walking in and looking at the decor and the menu. This isn't your typical japanese joint, which is great because god knows there are so many of those around. And yes, the owner is Japanese.

The service was also horrible. We had to flag down the waitresses that were taking care of us every time we wanted something. They didn't bring us water. Didn't ask if we wanted refills. Took forever to process our bill. Once they brought us our food they disappeared to chat with each other.

As far as the ambiance you talk about at Ebisu, I honestly didn't feel like it was a great dining experience. Maybe it was just an off night or something but the overall package was lacking something. I just can't put my finger on it.

pretentious... hm.. that's the first time I heard anyone use that word for us. We're pretty casual, from the feedback maybe too casual!

It's not that they are white, its the fact that they know nothing about Japanese. I asked for ponzu sauce and the girl was like "huh?" and half the dishes they bring, if it ain't the "Elvis Roll" then they can't even pronounce it properly. No I'm not bothered by asian CBC or whatever BC's working at white restaurants, but wouldn't you be bothered if they had Mainlander FOBs prancing around yelling "HAI there! er cheekin bargor witsh fries?" The other thing is with a mainly 99% caucasion ratio out front, it makes you wonder what kind of people run the kitchen pumping out these 'caterpillar rolls' .. bunch of pasta/burger making white folks? I mean if they trained in Japan then props to them. There could also be authentic Japanese chefs in there that can speak perfect english since he'll need to, what with all the white girls outside. Just a thought.

We are not your typical Japanese restaurant either, a lot of the sushi and kitchen staff have 10+ years experience in Japan, 1 has traveled throughout Japan in competitions and won a lot of them. Another trained under an Iron Chef, then there's 1 with a Fugu license. Extensive training to serve a deadly poisonous fish. I'll tell my headchef about your food quality complaints for good measure. Next time you should just tell me directly on the spot so I can fix it rather than bring it up a week later on RS. That's what I'm all about, wanting to hear feedback so I can hope to improve all the time, working on a personal level with the most important people, the customer. As for the service issues I will bring that up with my staff and even show them your post. No one's perfect, I'll work on that. Thanks for the heads up.

Am I the only one thats finds it annoying to have a color faded 10 feet projector in a restaurant?

I would find it annoying too but I haven't seen one recently. :Popcorn

Good review, duly noted. Will work on it. Thx. Also, it's a regular policy now in Vancouver. Like 4 out of 5 restaurants do it, from the super high-end to the Izakayas. Parties of 6/8 get the tip automatically calculated, with us it's set into the computer. As with any restaurant, you don't have to pay it if you feel it's not justifiable, it's just pre-calculated. Please do remember to express your reasoning for not doing so though to prevent them thinking that your just cheap and that it's the servers fault they didnt get the money which is totally fair.

I doubt most restaurants trying to run our style can seriously hire all service-pro waitresses. Most of the girls are just finishing school, still in school or Working Holidays from Japan who come to work for a year only, none of which have much service industry experience. Unless I find women in the late 20s or even 30s then they usually wouldn't have been in the industry that much, of course there are exceptions but those are few and far inbetween. :( I can only hope to try and train them as much as I can. As for your last comment, are you jealous? Hehe J/K! Too much Casting Couch for you lol. :jerkit:

With reviews like that, Ebisu sure doesn't need marketing!

I didn't realize inebriated women was a valid criteria for determining the quality of a restaurant. I'm sure the owners and founders of Ebisu would be flattered.

At the end of the day, I don't care how many modelesque waitresses, 10 foot projectors, cheap drinks, etc you shove into one restaurant. If the food quality is low and the service is sub-par, no amount of "ambience" will make up for it.

I will probably be there again this Saturday because a friend is coming from out of town and wants to try the place. I'm always about second chances so we'll go and hopefully the experience will be better this time.

We'll see.

I will try to make the necessary improvements by then. :whipped:

I think Naomi should not say hi for her next time visit. If she said hi to Deon... then of course...Naomi cannot leave an honest opinion about this restaurant again. Know what I mean? Of course, the staffs will treat Naomi and friends extra special. Extra special service for Naomi means spoiling the real nature of the restaurant. Think Naomi as the food/rextaurant critic. She is an honest customer...and I would like to read her honest comments again.

Dont get me wrong...but yeah...I do know that it is appropriate for Deon to make up for the unsatisfied customer. That's what makes a good manager...but I really do want to read Naomi's honest feedback again.

:jerkit:

Jealous? Hardly. Dime a dozen in this City. Although I admit, I went a little far with that comment, but I was only figuratively speaking. Its great that I got through to you though, which was my intention.

Finishing school, in school, etc etc, doesn't matter. Its all about the maturity of the employee as well as their work ethic. Nobody said you had to hire all service-pro waitresses, but if you were to hire girls who had at least a little service experience, we wouldn't run into all this negative feedback about your service. Its really not even about the girls having service experience, it has more to do with work ethic. You could hire somebody with no experience but with a great work ethic, combined with your training, that is a winning combination.

I read the previous posts about the comparisons to other downtown restaurants, and having gone to a lot of the restaurants downtown, I would have to agree, Ebisu's service is lacking, I know it bothers you a little to hear it, but its the truth.
If you're trying to say that its hard to find young, attractive females who have great service experience, why is it when I go to establishments like Cactus, Milestones, or Joey's, they too have attractive waitresses but their service is also good/great on a regular basis. Its as if your waitresses don't care if they get fired or not. Maybe they see you as more of a friend and not an authority figure? I really don't know, and I won't assume anything.

Anyways, I'm sure you're working together with your waitresses to progressively improve upon the negatives. I'm glad you read and reply to our complaints which means you are a pro-active manager who cares about his establishment and its customers, which is a lot more than I can say about a few managers I've ran into before. So good on you for that.

didn't bother reading too far back, but i was planning on dining at ebisu again very soon. my husband took his staff there for lunch a couple weeks ago and raved about the $10 make your own combo deal. the week after i couldn't resist and brought my 4 month old downtown to try it myself. i must say i was totally impressed with my meal! i especially loved the salad!! i think the service was at par with any other restaurant of it's type.

i enjoyed my lunch and will definately visit again.

What I'd be curious about, is what kind of restaurants other ebisu lovers or haters go to and how often they frequent the downtown core to dine out.

There are times where I feel reading anonymous restaurant reviews is along the same lines as getting movie recommendations from a stranger.

You just don't know if the person who thinks that the restaurant has amazing service is used to eating only at WhiteSpot/Dennys/Olive Garden or if they regularly dine at Vij's/Boathouse/Sandbar/The Cannery.

P.S. I agree with Hanoj - if I say hi it will be after the meal/service/paying of the bill.

I agree. .that is why dinehere.ca is good. i like to click on the users and read what other reviews and what they've been eating and where... haha !

LOL I don't mind. I'm not competing with Gotham or anything. I also use Triple AAA Certified Angus Grade Beef steaks with the same distinctions that seperate it from other places (Only 8% of all beef qualify, Superior flavour and juiciness from the marbling, etc) BUT they aren't $60+ here :)

It depends on HOW you want to impress them; pretentious up-scale western steakhouse costing an arm & a leg (maybe even some internal organs) or a hip, modern/contempary Japanese fusion with different kind of food and huge selection of drinks? Since he's so big shot I'm sure he's been to many many places, you would probably not be the first (or last) to take him to a high-end white restaurant ;)

but Rev* I will definitely try to hook you up! Just look/ask for me when you come down! See what we can do!

taking a good out of town friend there this saturday for dinner, any dishes that one can recommend that's good for TWO people?

--> Any special alcoholic drinks one would also recommend? Will single martini's or cocktails get one drunk? How much % do they have?

Btw: I just called and tried to make a reservation, you guys don't take reservations for 2 on a Saturday? Just want to be prepared and make sure we don't have to wait... the girl who picked up the phone said we just have to drop by and see?? That's kind of a turnoff...

I got some special cocktails going on right now ... every drink has alcohol %'s listed on it (I was bored while editing the menu lol) so you can see exactly ho much your drinking!

Yeah because the weekends are usually so packed it's hard to book up a table for 2, we usually just slot them in at the bar stools or at the counter, but your from RS so you get special privileges ;)

Just PM about the details (name, #, time) of your booking and I'll make it happen :)

I will definitely be working on the service, get a few more staff meetings together. Takes a little time to re-adjust the system and kick the girls in the butt to get things rolling.

Been so busy what with the new renovations at the new place, getting staff, etc..

owever, all that stuff was ok, but what ticked us off the most was the fact that the staff took our change as it was tips. We had a $41.50 meal and gave $60 dollars. They thought we were going to give them $18 dollars in tips? When I reminded them about our change, They actually had to look for our bill and open the cash register to get the change. My gf was furious to say the least and I doubt we will ever be going back.

Deon.. the exact same situation happened to myself and a friend as well.

This may/ may not be the same girl, but I find it really rude and discomforting when that happens in ANY OTHER restaurants I go to. Have this negative experience and it makes me want to pimp slap those waitresses for taking my change as tips...

I find it really strange that should happen. I've never seen it nor do I condone it. I always tell the cashier to give back the change unless it was obvious like for example a $73 bill and they pay with four $20s AND a toonie. You mentioned a $70 bill and you paid with a hundred dollar bill and didn't get change? Was it a split bill table? Sometimes those get confusing when 15 people are paying at the same time for a single party. Otherwise I really don't know how that could happen, odd...

Just got back not long ago... Dinner was great. Food was OK, drinks were awesome. Service was improved from the last time I went... I was kinda buzzed to look at the bill and just went ahead and paid for it... But doing some recalculations now (I know the menu online might not have been updated with prices), it seems like I was over charged by $20+.

Anyways, anyway I can check with you Deon? Or let you know and confirm what I ordered? Thanks for the reserve booking btw.

well I eventually got change, just the thing that peeved me was that it took forever and many (at least 4-5 times) reminders for the waitress to get me the change......i mean i can understand if it's a super busy time, but i didn't go during a peak time and it wasn't very busy

however, having said that, the food is pretty good and i'm glad that u go for quality ingredients.......my only complaint would be the prawn gyoza, the prawns could be fresher and pack a bit more taste......the asari pasta is awesome tho, and the clams were very good

Me and my boyfriend decided to drop by for dinner a few weeks back.
When we arrived, we didn't notice a hostess at the front, so we just sat by the door and waited for someone to come by.

10 minutes had passed and still no one came by. What was really annoying was alot of the workers were making eye contact with us, but no one came to acknowledge us.
They all seemed too busy, even tho it was pretty quiet.

When we finally flagged down a waitress, she just gave us a brush off, saying she wasn't the hostess and quickly ran off. She didnt' seem to really care.
Ok, your not the hostess, but at least find someone to come help us.
I can understand if the restaurant was busy/full, but it was quiet and I saw alot of empty seats.

If the restaurant was full or had a private party, at least have the decency to tell us, so we don't waste our time waiting around.
We waited a few more minutes, after that, we just gave up and left.
We dine out alot and this is the first time something like this has happened.
We didn't feel welcomed at all. There are plenty of other restaurants nearby and frankly with poor service like that, I won't be coming back.

huh?! Are you serious? That has never happened before.. 10 minutes? hm... that's a long time ... My apologies on behalf of the negligent staff :(
Either myself, my assistant, the cashier or any and all servers that pass by the front acknowledge or even take you to a seat themselves..
Unless it's a weekend where I have 2 dedicated hostess to arrange the seating because there are usually so many reservations that it's full house and the seating needs to be carefully adjusted. Even then with both hostess busy either cleaning a table for the next reservation or finding an empty seat, there are 2 more cashiers that take up the front to get names down on the waiting list..
I've never seen anyone at the front left unattended for more than a couple minutes, maybe it was my day off? Usually it's off-the-walls busy for a chance that would happen. Strange it should happen though .. I'll see to it. Can you remember which day it was exactly so I can pinpoint which staff were on shift?

Come to think of it, that actually happened to me a while back at Ebisu as well, it was either a Friday or Saturday evening. My friends and I were standing around the waiting area for about 5-10 minutes for a waiter/waitress to attend us and nobody came. If you know me, you would know that I'm pretty hard to miss and we were the only group standing there. So, after about 5-10 minutes, and nobody came, my friends and I decided to leave.

Hey Dreamer,

I did some investigation and dug up some information. I found out about Aug 3rd, that day I was out of town and the hostess/cashier called in sick an hour before her shift started (she no longer works here), so they were basically missing the main person responsible to bring you to the table. They were understaffed and it was quite busy (judging from the sales report for that night).. you said you saw that it wasn't busy? There might be a chance that the back section (you can't see it from the front area) was packed (big parties tend to book the back section) but that's just speculation anyway.
I know that is no excuse and is of no relevance to the way you got treated but I hope it clarifies everything a little bit and shows that we are usually not like that.

I noticed the sign too. Are they going to occupy the space above Bread Garden?

We are going to be using the same spot formerly occupied by Kamakura, nice little tucked away area for some cozy parties! Renovations should be completed around September'ish

Those two issues of people having problems getting seated are not isolated. A couple months ago my gf and I visited around 2pm on a weekday for a late lunch. The restaurant was not busy at all and there were some staff walking around. We stood there for a few minutes, while staff was walking back and forth. We decided to look at the menu for another few minutes... still no one paying any attention to us even though they saw us. After 7-10 minutes waiting we just said screw it and left, while nobody once said a word to us.

As this seems to be a common problem, I would suggest talking to your staff whether they are hosts/hostessses or not. If they aren't the host/hostess then they should be able to find someone who can help them out as someone already mentioned. This is the first line of contact between you and the customer and it's pretty important for repeat business. Also, Obsideon, how do you know it's never happened before if the customer is at the front unattended and decides to leave?

I dropped by tonight closer at around 11pm tonight for the RS Drink Meet (see VAC Off-Topic). The place was packed and the folks from RS who already sat down moved so there would be more room and seating available. I was waiting for Ulic because my intention was to drop by and to say hi. Because he was in the washroom doing whatever the hell he was doing, he took forever so I ended up standing around on the floor with my lady friend like a complete idiot.

Nonetheless, I think it was Obsideon, checked to see if I had already been seated and also the bartender asked how we were doing and if we had been seated/served yet. They did this without hesitation however, I had to leave and didn't stick around for too long because Ulic takes forever when he's in the washroom.

The hostess/waitress up front is cute. My lady friend gave me a punch on the arm. :D

was that you guys that were there till close, with all the pitchers of unfinished beers? haha, if so thanks! those almost pushed us over the edge man.

obsideon,
yeah thanks for those icebreakers man. we had a good time there, service was good, and food and drinks were excellent. thanks again for those last minute oysters.

ya fucker, i was talking on the phone getting more people to come. there were PLENTY of seats for you and that chick. we had room for 10. we only had 8.

Nah, that wasn't us bud. At least I don't think so...come inside, look right, there are two long tables. We were the one farthest from the door, and the two booths closest to that table. I think we finished all the beer...

Hey I have my bday coming up and saw that on the website you don't take reservations 10+ people on saturdays 7:00 - 9:00. Is there any way you could bend your rules a bit? I really wanted to have my bday dinner at Ebisu. The night would be Oct 4th.

Thanks in advance,

Brian

go there once in awhile and everything is good except the waitresses, they take forever and i have to yell at them to get their attention. I know they're busy but people shouldnt have to scream for you to come over and take a drink order.

Been there a few times, and its always been packed.

I usually avoid eating oysters at Asian places, but the oysters were surprisingly fresh.

I went to Ebisu Robson last Thursday, we ordered the fried squid, cream cheese gyoza, mango paradise rolls, hot chicken wings, this fried cheese thing (it was $3.98?), yaki-soba with chicken. I was very disappointed with the yaki soba, the noodle is supposed to be thin and soft.......but our noodle was made with pasta?!!! We didnt complain and our food wasn't hot, it tasted like it came out of the microwave.

Our drinks: black beer: no air
: tea, it would be better if it was hot and not cold

You should have complained! Customer feedback is the best source to improve from! I'm very open to critism (regular customers and friends always tell me if a dish isn't as good as it should/can be) and if nobody points it out then it will just stay the same :\ So none of the dishes were hot?! That is very odd .. the Yakisoba, we use pasta noodle on purpose, in the menu it says "Yakisoba Special"... but then again your not the first one to complain and probably not the last. I will discuss this issue with my chefs this week and chances are we'll revert back to the traditional soba noodles rather than be unique and use pasta noodles, some people like it though hehe :p
As for the beer ... I'm assuming you had the Asahi Black?.. no air?.. it comes straight from a bottle .. I think the Asahi Black IS like that, kinda malty/flat stout? Kinda like a Guiness? It's definitely not as crisp or zingy as say a lager. I think it's personal preference, I think it tastes great but I don't think I can drink 2 of them in a row, taste too strong and too thick for me personally. Ech you had cold green tea? I'll have to reprimand the bartenders :whipped:

hey deon hows the nachos i heard its good

Perfect with a beer! (or 2)

Our food was warm-ish, thanks for the explanation. Other than that, I really love the cream cheese gyoza:) It was our first time there. We usually go the Asian-Japanese (Manzo) so I guess it was a little different for us.

I only had the green tea and it wasn't warm. Then I asked for ice water instead. :D
My friend had the beer and was complaining then ordered another beer. :p

Deon, when I was working in Yaletown, we also used Italian Pasta for yakisoba. Soba is a very specific type of noodle, so on our menu, we named it 'Yaki-spaghetti'. No complaints. :)

Went there last night, (friday) with a few friends before heading down to club, and it was an awesome experience as usual.

Ordered the Sashimi Salad, Tuna Salmon Toro plate, Salmon Carpaccio, oysters (as usual) and saba roll (torched).

Was so awesome to have all that great food again, and have awesome service. For anyone else that was there from 8:30-10pm, Deon was kind enough to put on Dai-lo for people to watch on the two smaller bar TV's :)

Deon: I'll be back soon! to pckup my card

But the staff was fast, and everything was great as usual. Took my guests there, and they were super happy about the food.

And I didn't know Cindy worked there HAHAHA.... i was so suprised :)

but it's bigger, and more spatious than ANY other place of it's type.

asians are small anyways, cept me XD

I never actually sat on that place near the door. I'd imagine it gets cold when ppl open up for a smoke or whatever.
