i did worry, but you know what, people might break into your car for no reason too? can't be too much worry. you lock your car, you alarm is on. you did your best already. i got a buddy got break-in couple weeks back, he just lost around 10 dollars change. the thief didn't even bother to take his DVD player and iPod, which is mounted on the dash.

Chances are it might be one of many many 'camera'/'sensors' mounted on luxury cars now. For example...Mercedes have all those senors and technology that brakes for you if it sense you're too close to the car in front, etc.

Because car data system has limited bandwidth. All those cameras have on board processors (the majority is by a company called MobilEye (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobileye)) that already sensed / processed the video image data usually on sensor (since CMOS has plenty of silicon real estate). You can't just try to solder a video out line.

The sensor on the location you talk about, could be night vision or just the rain/light sensor. Most new MY cars that are 50k would have more than 1 camera.. eg lane departure / blind spot sensors are just CMOS camera sensors.

You should put the camera on a bench top power supply or better, power the camera in car on from a separate battery power source to see if you can replicate the problem.. Chances are your wiring is loose and experiencing intermittent voltage drops, causing the camera to restart. It depends on the car, if your car's suspension is hard, I won't use wire taps.. Either find a power source you can screw down, or thermal wire strip (http://www.teledyneinterconnect.com/products/stripall/default.asp) a reliable power wire and solder a splice.

I have a GoPro but never mounted it. When I was in Europe last June I gave my buddy the camera to see how it would turn out, quality seemed fine. Now I just have to mount it on my car here (this thread shows that it could be an excellent idea). It snaps on and off, easy to use and is full HD.

Here is the "test" video from when I drove through Wales.

I think that might be the problem, I'm currently using a cigarette lighter splitter for the blackvue and my iPod. The power cable doesn't sit all the way into the splitter opening.

Although, one issue is when power or voltage drops, the blackvue should say "the blackvue is now shutting down." Instead, it seems like it keeps restarting so it doesn't seem like an interminent power issue.

My suspension is pretty stiff as well so the power cable might be jumping around loose, but it's never lost power.

That "BlackVue for your safe driving" gets annoying really fast, doesn't it?

Mine started doing that the other day, so I checked the wiring which was ok. Then I deleted all of the recorded video/gps/voice recordings which didn't make any difference. What did work was going into the settings program with the BlackVue viewer installed and rewrote the settings onto the memory card. It's been working fine for the last couple of days.

^ you could probably just delete it and go back into options to redo your settings.

Also it makes sense that your BV doesnt shut off, probably because it loses power but regains it right away, like a skip from the power source. Maybe you should remove the splitter for your ipod and just plug the camera in alone. See if the problem still occurs.

Go to settings and click on Save and Close at the bottom of the screen. Change one setting and let it resave everything again.

It seems that the unit doesn't have the capability of remembering your preferences so it read the memory card everytime it starts. Maybe a file on your memory card was corrupted and causes the problem.

That thing seems risky. It just drains your battery until it reaches what it thinks is a "safe" level or a certain number of hours. During colder days, it could make the difference between starting or not. I can't believe those $50 dash cams come with a built in battery while this one just has enough juice to power itself down LOL

Well every electric device drains the battery.. that's just what they are! The question is how long you will leave the car before the next car restart and how much the the extra the blackvue addition drains.

The general comment I have with these devices; no matter if they are for cameras or car-onboard computers eg ITX boards is they only take the cheap / mass production way out.. ie they test voltages only and don't measure amps.

These things usually works like this... they require you to wire a power supply and an ignition switched power source.. so that it can sense when the ignition is On/Off... When the ignition is off and voltage is under or about 11.2-5V.. it starts the timer to shutdown the power socket.

Another thing is it depends on your car.. If your car is a later model say 05+ where bluetooth, usb sockets etc are standard already... there is a good chance one of the power plugs already in the car will do a similar thing eg the USB jack or build in cellphone cradles. I know my newer cars' iphone cradles do voltage sensing to prevent power drain. So check your own car first, before you decide. You might be able to tap an existing powerline to the Blackvue for the same functionality.

They are recorded in .mp4, typical format QuickTime will play back for you. You are also able to play it back on many other programs such as VLC. So you do not need the blackvue software to view your files. But without the program you will not get the maps/fancy information about your drive.

I tried the android app and in my case my HTC DesireZ cannot play back the 1080p video smoothly, it is very choppy. Therefore I don't even bother with that thing.

Try this.. borrow someone's car battery.. hook up your camera and tie it in to the battery (leave the battery in the passenger seat etc).. Do a normal drive, if the camera still powers out, it is the camera's fault... else it is likely to be your wiring.

I got the same exact one.
They keep shutting off randomly while the power is still on. I have to keep resetting it to keep them running. Quite annoying. The seller and I tried every possible ways to fix that problem but we couldnt figure it out. It never happened to him and other buyers. Maybe it's just bad luck for me.

Just another day in Vancouver Part II - YouTube

There is just so much wrong with what happened that it really requires a second look.

The first time, you think it's going to be another car. Then you realize it isn't the one running the stale yellow but the one that guns it at a red.

Then you watch it the second time and see this very same car slow down and almost come to a complete stop for the yellow and when the light turns red, you notice she is still behind the line. Then half a second later, decides to gun it on a red.

Win.

Been doing a bit of research online thru googling Alibaba, ebay, DX etc.... Most of the cheaper DVRs under $90~ that say full 1080P don't tell you its 15FPS so you're getting choppy video unless you revert back to 720P @ 30FPS

Only ones that have True 1080P @ 30FPS tier (I've seen) is in the $120+ range so be prepared to shell out $$$ for quality.

The one I've been playing around with is the DV808 keychain cam which is a toy but gives an OK 720x480 .Mjpeg (Interlaced if you ask me) but I can't complain much since it was only $12 and the size of an alarm fob. There IS a 720P version for $30 bucks but it still doesn't have the features I want like Loop-recording, Wide Lens and Motion detect, so I Might as well pay for a decent $40-$70 720P H.264 wide-angle dash cam DVR later on.

I finally got around to hardwiring my Blackvue camera. I figured I'd take some photos along the way to show the process.

Do-It-Yourself Tutorial: How to Hardwire your BlackVue DR400G-HD Camera

There are a couple methods out there to hardwire your camera. Below are three popular methods, but this tutorial will only cover the last method:

- Hardwire directly to the car battery (This involves abit more work as you would have to feed the wire from within the passenger compartment through the firewall hole and into the engine bay.)
- Tap into your Dome light or cigarette lighter wires (This is the quickest method, but it does involve cutting into your existing wires. For those going this route, you can use a T-tap connector if you don't want to solder)
- Tap into your Fusebox. (Least intrusive)

Tools Needed:
- Phillips Screwdriver
- Multimeter
- Crimping & Wire stripping Tool
- Soldering Iron (OPTIONAL - only required if your barrel connector needs to be wired)

Parts you will need to buy (Total Cost between $3-$7, more if you buy items in bulk):

1 x ATM fuse tap ~$1
- These can be bought from ebay: >>Click Here<< (http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Fuse-Tap-Adaptor-Adapter-Automotive-Atm-Mini-Fuses-Fuse-/220740675423?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item33652b675f#ht_2236wt_1064) (5-pack for $6 shipping incl., I have a couple to spare if anyone in GTA needs)
- Alternatively, you can buy a Dual Fuse Tap from various auto stores or Canadian Tire (~$15). They usually come in a kit with a variety of fuses. >>Sample Image<< (http://i.minus.com/iDupOhliKv2hb.jpg)
- Make sure that your car uses ATM blade fuses, if not, you may need to buy a compatible fuse tap
1 x Female disconnect terminal ~$1
- If you purchased the fuse tap above from the ebay link, a compatible terminal is included already.
1 x Ring or Spade terminal ~$1
- These are to connect your negative (black) wire to the grounding screw next to your fusebox. You will need to check the size of the screw in your car to get a compatible terminal.
1 x Cigarette lighter barrel connector (OPTIONAL) ~$2.50
- If you plan on cutting into the power cable that came with the Blackvue camera, then you don't need this.
- If you buy one of these without wires, you may have to solder on your own wires to it.
- If you can find a cheap extension cable with a barrel connector on one end, you don't need to solder anything.
1 x 10A or less ATM blade fuse (OPTIONAL) ~$1
- You only need this if you plan on using an empty slot in your fusebox, otherwise you can tap into one of the existing fuses.

http://i.minus.com/icFI0I5f7avyU.jpg
I should mention that apart from the fuse tap (A), you can buy the other parts from >>Sayal Electronics<< (http://www.sayal.com/zinc/index.asp)

STEP 1 - Wiring the cigarette lighter barrel connector

If you're cutting directly into the power cable that came with the Blackvue camera, skip to STEP 2
To wire the barrel connector (D), twist open the cap to reveal the copper contacts behind it. Find an extra 1-2 ft cable and solder the one end to this connector. Solder the red wire (Positive) onto the copper tab in the centre, and the black wire (Negative) to the side tab. Follow the diagram below.
http://i.minus.com/i28JaJ7hzPlwN.jpg

STEP 2 - Crimping the terminals

Take the other end of the cable, and make a clean cut. If you're using the existing power cable that came with camera, make sure the cable is long enough to run from behind your rear view mirror to the fuse box before cutting it!
Remove about half an inch of the wire's insulation with your wire stripper.
http://i.minus.com/ibfZxUKOgG8IEo.jpg
Use the crimping tool to attach the Female Disconnect Terminal (B) to the Positive (Red) wire, and the Ring or Spade Terminal (C) to the Negative (Black) wire. If you don't have colour coded cables (like me :P) use your multimeter to check. If you need help using the crimping tool, check out this video >>Click Here<< (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYdToPZ9dxQ). The end result should look like this:

http://i.minus.com/iuxLD1q41981O.jpghttp://i.minus.com/iI7oI5GTH5Pmj.jpg

STEP 3 - Locating a grounding screw, fuse terminal and the load side

This is the part where the multimeter becomes extremely handy.
Locate the Fusebox (Usually directly underneath the steering wheel). There should also be a screw near it where you can attach the negative ground wire (Black) to.
If you can, try to find a pdf maintenance manual online for your car. It will tell you where the Fusebox is located, how to get to it, and also map out the purpose of each fuse in the relay. Usually the panel covering the fusebox will also have a diagram printed on it.
This is what mine looks like, with the grounding screw highlighted in Red:

http://i.minus.com/ibeoCabNzq0bQ2.jpg

Take out your multimeter, set it to "DC" and connect the Black probe to the grounding screw. Then use the Red probe to test each terminal. Notice that there are two tiny metal contacts on each coloured fuse. Place the Red probe on one of them to test for a voltage reading.
If you need the Blackvue to turn on and record only when the car is running, you need to probe the terminals for a voltage reading while the car key is in the ACC position. Otherwise, do the test with everything off.
A live terminal should be one that gives you a little over 12V+ when you probe it.
If you happen to find an empty terminal that gives you a reading, you can go ahead and use that with your ATM blade fuse (E), otherwise, you will need to use one of the terminals that has an existing fuse (10A or less only!).
Your fuse tap (A) will slot into the terminal with the fuse like this:

http://i.minus.com/iV8FAnPc62isc.jpg

Now, before you continue, you need to determine which blade the fuse tap goes onto. The one blade goes into the LOAD side, while the other goes into the POWER side. The fuse tap needs to go with the blade into the LOAD side.
Remove the fuse from the terminal you intend to use, and then, with the Black probe of the multimeter still connected to the grounding screw, use the Red probe to test each slot. The slot that gives you a 12V+ reading is the POWER side, therefore the fuse tap goes into the other slot.

STEP 4 - Putting everything together

If you haven't already, insert the Fuse tap (A) along with the fuse as described in the previous step. Attach the Female disconnect terminal (B) to the tab of the fuse tap sticking out. Use the screwdriver to secure the Ring or Spade terminal (C) to the grounding screw.
Once you're done, it should look like this:

http://i.minus.com/isFA9gVzga7cr.jpg

Tidy up the cables, hook up the BlackVue and you should be good to go!

Hope this tutorial helps!

If I have made any errors, or if there is anything I should add to it, please let me know ;)

Wondering if its the class 6 microsd the device came with that is causing the error. Has anyone purchased a larger/different microsd card and do you/have you encountered the sd card error?

Yeah, I was getting that message even though I was doing the full overwrite format. I was on the March firmware, currently updated to the recently released firmware and it seems better. I haven't gotten another SD error yet, but the unit refused to do the shut down procedure once. Turning the car on/off again seemed to fix that. I too wonder if it's the class 4 thing. I might try class 10 if someone else says it works better!

I've gone thru two cheap deal extreme cams and finally cave and got the dr-400. Honestly speaking just paying the little bit more from the start should of been the thought from the start. I wasted 150 bucks or so on the cheap cam that doesn't really give good output and night shots were terrible

It's not true HD, it's upscaled. The video's actually probably something like 640*480, and they upscale it to 1280*960 (You're just looking at low res video on a bigger screen).

1080p (interpolated....)... auto on-off
not the best but it serves it's purpose

So, thinking of getting one of these dash cams. Is the one you have easy to unmount? Also, can I purchase an extra mount so I can install it on another vehicle?

I gather this is the same one you have and the the same that's available at the store on Kingsway?

1080p HD DASH CAMERA (http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/rds/ele/2964609240.html)

I like the Black Vue that people are talking about, but if this is good enough, I can use the money I save to buy another one for the rear. Also if it gets stolen, it won't hurt as much as getting an expensive one stolen.

I hope the cam takes decent footage at night, 'cause you never know when you're in a situation like I was on New Year's Eve. My memory is good, but there's nothing like playing back a footage like that on a screen. Shiny, tight, blue dresses, FTW!

The last firmware update 1.039 seemed rock stable. It took a little longer to fire up, but I didn't have anymore "please check the SD card" errors or powering down issues. The latest update hopefully seals the deal for perfect function! And yes, I've tried a new microSD card by ADATA that was a class 4 and it worked fine. hmmm interesting... after your format your SD card, are you able to copy and paste stuff onto it? When I was having my issues, even after formatting there was some issue with the card, but I eventually got a proper format (double full overwrite formatted it) and so far so good *knock on wood*

But I guess without the suction cup, it create less cutter and more "hidden".

It's not meant to be hidden, I mounted it with the suction cup mount it comes with right underneath the rearview mirror. I'm away from home until the 15th so I can't help you there. There's a setting for the go pro 2 too, I usually just use 5mp so it doesn't use as much memory while rolling.

i wouldn't want to have to worry about bringing my gopro everywhere. if your going to run a dash cam do it right and hard wire it in so it doesn't become a massive hassle. but obviously the gopro will have way better quality then all the other cheap ebay kits and it will also be the one most likely stollen if you leave in in the car.

unless your female or carry a murse i can't see where you would put it if you were to say, go to the mall. if you don't use it every time on every drive its useless b/c if may not be there when you need it most and i wouldn't want to have to carry it around everywhere. plus you have to charge it every night.

like i said i would just do it right. hard wire in a quality kit and then never worry again.

Cons of using a Go-Pro for dash cam are:

1. sorta expensive for a HD cam with wide angle.
2. Does not loop-record (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loop_recording)
3. No auto start on ignition option
4. There's no GPS or G-sensor feature in a $400~ spite having the largest accessory selection available on the market for a HD sports cam.

Yes it is used for motor sports on the track and such but for every day "No worries it's working in the background" automatic recording.
My cheap 808 dvr needs charging and manual operation everytime I jump in the car and 2 problems I have the most is battery life and no loop recording. I can't justify spending $200-$400 for HD without those auto features to put my mind as ease.

P.s post it up FS: camera/electronics section of the revscene Buy&Sell.

So my Blackvue was working normally and I drove to a friends house. I left like 2 hours later around 1:50 am, so it was kinda cold. The Blackvue was stuck at the beginning of power up so the ring light is lit the same colour. Turned off car, unplugged power, and here over 10 mins later the light is still lit up.

EDIT: seems like battery drained out now. so light is off. we'll see if it still turns on tomorrow morning..

Happened on my new patriot 32gb class 10 card. After it drained i tried it in the morning and it worked like normal. And its been working fine for the last couple days.

I wonder if making a mic sock sort of thing would improve the BV audio quality.

Also anyone thing or try wrapping their BV? I was thinking of using some cf vinyl to make it black and less obvious. But the device gets quite hot when in use, so not sure..

Little update on my defective ebay cam purchase a while back:
-seller "mastation" had item listing removed before I got the product
-after I received the item and the quality was bad, seller requested I return it back for an exchange/refund
-I ship it back and he says he'll update me
-2 months later, seller is no longer responsive to my inquires on the subject and leads me to wonder if I'm getting scammed on this

that seems like a pretty good deal, just $20 more than the cheap ebay one. you should do a review when you get the chance. I've been meaning to buy another dam cam for the other car and would consider this one if it's decent.

P.S. should we get a Dashcam mini meet going? Ease of use can only be described so much on paper until it's actually in your own hands. Also it's good for people who are on the fence on getting one.

Like TOPEC mentioned, there are enough people over on NASIOC for this... I was talking to F30 about getting a group buy going, and have about 17 people on NASIOC interested in the BlackVue (a few will even buy a couple), but last I heard from him it didn't look good. If you can get the BlackVue for $190 apiece ($185 + $5 shipping), I'm sure we could get an order going in the next week or so.

The BlackView from dx came a few days ago and I installed it today with industrial strength velcro instead of the big ugly suction cup that came with it. It is a bit bigger then the BlackVue. The instructions are in a weird translated english so a lot of stuff don't makes sense. The lady's voice is in mandarin and the menu is in chinese. It took me awhile to change the menu language to english by looking at pictures online of an english menu. The lady's voice can't be changed or turned off so I just taped the speaker up. Also I can't upgrade the firmware. No sample video yet but I'm going to assume it's better than the KCI BlackBox but not as good as the BlackVue. I will post videos later.

Damn Mainlander scammer!
I had similar experience on another ebay seller that pretend he didn't receive the item after ebay resolution deadline. I used my credit card through Paypal paying for the item so it might work if you used the same method. Call your credit card company and tell them the whole story. Credit card company will ask you to email the ebay and Paypal transaction records. I also emailed the Canada Post receipt to proof that I mailed the item back to the seller in China. Then credit card company will deal with Paypal. In less than a week, the credit card company refunded the money I paid. Good luck!

My only gripe is that it uses micro SD which is something I already knew and is very minor anyways. It is definitely worth the extra money over the $30 ones IMO. This is probably the same one autolismo sells, I worried that it would take a month to get here so I'm pleasantly surprised to get it this morning

Hey guys

I am currently visiting in Taiwan. I saw many dash cams for sale in electronic stores.
I am considering buying them for relatives back in Vancouver.
The price seems to be fair. They have tons of cheap ones here too.

DOD GS600 is around $250
http://link.photo.pchome.com.tw/s08/bosskiss1314/944/133036035592/

I am gonna visit the electronic shops again.
If you guys want, I can check the local price for you. just give me a name or a link
If it's cheaper, I can help you get it and ship it since I am shipping some back to relatives anyway.

The popular ones here are MIO 238HD
http://www.gohappy.com.tw/images/product/72/2177037/2177037_3_1.jpg
720P HD, G-sensor, comes with screen. Around $170

I guess the Taiwanese brand would be cheaper here.

so far, i can't find a good price on Blackvue DR400G-HD yet...

then i saw another one that really caught my eye. this one mounts on the rear view mirror. looks neat and clean behind the mirror. forgot to take picture. here are the pix i found on google.

LTS W5100 has G-sensor, 720HD, around $140cdn
http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q260/v_weitaro/Dash%20Cams/mobile01-c1c90adf6b5ab2842b6fa6fcab50b100.jpg

The guy showed me couple video clips from LTS W5100 and i was impressed with its quality and sharpness. it adjusts the lighting quickly going in the tunnel. looks great at night.

He also recommended another one called PaPaGo P0.
My friend had that on his GTI and it has trouble turning on in Winter.
For some reason it needs to be warmed up to turn on...so I'd avoid PAPAGO.

Before I left, I saw a cheap one called UB JXD-D1 720HD around $60

Not exactly sure what part you need help with.

Basically:
1) Mount device where you want it to be
2) Remove A-pillar trim/headliner/door weather trim thingy/whatever else maybe in the way so you can hide the wire and lead it to fuse box
3) Cut cigarette plug portion off
4) Strip/prep wires, either ghetto or with a proper plug
5) Plug into fusebox and ground wire
6) ???
