Does anyone run a rear camera with tinted windows? Is it completely worthless at night or still fairly functional?

Alternatively I need to add a back up camera to my Jeep anyways, so I'm wondering if there are any dual channel setups that either have a waterproof rear camera that can mount outside, or allow the rear channel to come from any camera?

Still fairly functional on my car. I have the Blackvue DR550GW and 35% tint.

Kind of a late post but pretty fucking disrespectful.
Saw this guy driving on Cambie today and remembered I had this video lying around.
These guys ran off as soon as I hit the remote but I managed to get the guys plate.
I put in a 2 channel dashcam but there's no point looking out the back as the car has louvers so I rotated it to face the front.

Yeah first thing I did was get the clear bra for the front/hood/sides. This was after a weekend of tracking at Area 27 and 1000km of sitting on an open trailer behind my dieselgate touareg so the car was covered in dust inside and out. Wouldve done a bit of damage if someone was rubbing their ass over that dust on exposed paint.

Could just be a blown glass fuse (6mm x 30mm), my DR650 has two of these fuses, one in the plug and one in the wire. Not sure what the spec of that cable is though as far as the plug size.

Got hit and run today. I had a mental melt down at the time and didn't stop my car immediately and the other driver took off. I didn't even know I got hit, I thought I hit a bump in the road. Minor damage to the driver side of my rear bumper.

Front and rear dash cameras got the guy's plate and shows him side swiping/rear ending me and so hopefully that will bail me out with ICBC. Won't post any vids til my case with ICBC is done.

Surprised people even try to take off, now that almost everyone has a dash camera. I guess the penalties are pretty low. If the police/ICBC contact them, they can just admit fault and probably just have to deal with the insurance charges rather than get charged for hit and run, leaving the scene, etc.

Does anyone actually know the penalties if caught for hit and run?
When my car got hit and run, ICBC had my dashcam video for evidence and contacted my witness (who's my coworker) and he told me when ICBC contacted him, they said the guy denied hitting my car despite the video evidence. wtf? lol.

A few weeks after that, I just receive a cheque from ICBC in my mail reimbursing my deductible.

No real closure, and information is all confidential...

In my experience there's basically nothing, police/icbc can't really be bothered with the paperwork. Perhaps it can be escalated but I guess most people just want their car fixed and deductible waived.
IMO intent is also hard to prove, e.g., if a truck backs into you they might not even know it

haha, in my scenario. The guy got out, examined the damage, then shook his head with a :heckno: expression, and then quickly got back in and left.

Seems like if as long as no one got hurt, then there are no real repercussions from leaving the scene of the accident. If you get caught, just pay what you owe and carry on.

I phoned the police non-emergency line since the ICBC site for hit and runs said I should. The person taking the call wasn't interested in taking my info, until I told them I had a car description and plate #. They gave me a case #, and a few hours later, the VPD called back, told me to go thru ICBC and that they weren't going to do anything with the case.

most likely the case. when I had my hit and run, which I also have a dashcam footage for evidence, ICBC tried contacting them for 2 weeks without any replies. one day my adjuster calls me and tells me to just go get my car repaired. i guess the other party finally admitted to fault.

Kind of brutal. It practically gives people more incentive to just run. It's like, just take the chance and if you get caught, oh well, you were going to pay the same anyway if you owed up to it and left a note.

From the police perspective there has to be burden of proof.. so you must at least have the description and license plate # for them to do anything. One time a 18 wheeler clipped my mirror, I voice recorded the plate number and the company the truck was with.. I recited the number to the dispatcher (it was on highway so RCMP).. the person was nice enough to verify the number.

RCMP is not going to send a squad car to hunt down a hit and run driver unless someone ends up at the hospital.

I also forwarded the video to the company, the company got the employee to admit fault.

...

Alright, ICBC called me and it sounds like I have a pretty cool adjuster. She reviewed my video, says the other guy is 100% at fault and was pleased my video was pretty good at showing what happened.

This case might have been a small win for the adjuster, she was pretty happy. Told me she was going to call the other driver up and not tell them she has dash cam video. If they deny, then she's gonna say "HA, I got you on camera!".
I asked her a few questions about what happens in a hit and run situation.

1. If you hit and run and you are caught, you void the terms of your insurance so ICBC will not pay for any repairs to your vehicle.

2. If you deny you were involved in a hit and run when contacted by ICBC and ICBC has evidence like dash cam video, then ICBC plays nasty and will go after you for the cost of repairs for the damage you caused to the other party and/or other fines/tickets.

you!

Hm..
The only thing I can think of is the fish style lens that might be in the 650. With the fish eye lens and the curve of the rear window, both can create that black hazy effect.

As a test, mount the rear 650 at a different spot with less rear window curve and see if that changes things.

Vancouver police look for suspect vehicle after hit-and-run - BC | Globalnews.ca (http://globalnews.ca/news/3325644/vancouver-police-look-for-suspect-vehicle-after-hit-and-run/)

My vehicle was parked about 1/2 a block down from where this happened. My rear camera is broken so unfortunately it didn't catch the actual incident. The footage on my front camera caught the sound of the incident and the vehicle in question driving away.

I have submitted the footage to the VPD and waiting for further action. Let's hope they catch this person.

I would think you'd be at fault in this case. Generally, I'd be watching the driver going straight and make 100% sure they are stopping before making the left turn. Admittedly though, it's a bit of a douche move on the other cars part to try to run a stale orange light.

I think the issue is that he didn't actually try to run the light. I give more credit to guys who blast through yellows because then at least their intention is clear and I'll just wait until full red to turn.

This guy was quite far away and going slow enough to look like he was slowing down. Based on distance and speed, he had plenty of time to safely stop. Pretty obvious he just blatantly missed the light or didn't see the colour. Guess I'm glad I dodged this one. Would have sucked to be 100% fault for this.

SSM_DC5
04-27-2017, 03:16 PM
You'd be at fault for sure. But some to the other driver? I don't know as he entered the intersection when it was still yellow.

The other car's nose didn't dive so there wasn't much indication he/she was going to stop. I wouldn't have initiated my turn in that scenario.

syee
04-27-2017, 03:26 PM
I don't think the other driver had the intent to stop. (they were just driving really slow) It's a really close call as to whether the light is orange or red as they pass the line. In that case, I'm sure ICBC would say the person with the right of way is not at fault.

I certainly agree with you though that they could have easily stopped well before the line at the speed they were going. Maybe with the dashcam footage, they could have shifted some blame to them for running what could arguably be a red light, but that's probably a very iffy maybe. The onus is on the person who doesn't have the right of way to make sure they turn when it's safe to do so.

ilvtofu
04-27-2017, 11:12 PM
Dash cam footage is definitely gonna be useful in this case to shift some blame to the other driver. At this point, front wheels haven't crossed into intersection yet and light is red.
http://i.imgur.com/S2GrBmV.png

VPD could definitely ticket the other driver but how ICBC determines fault may be a little different. The video evidence strongly suggests to me that Matrix driver is in violation of BC MVA regarding stopping at yellow lights.

While ICBC might say that you're at fault in this case, I feel a good lawyer equipped with the dash cam footage would be able to argue against this (see Monzon v Sasso, 1992 https://www.canlii.org/en/bc/bcsc/doc/1992/1992canlii514/1992canlii514.pdf)

What a F$%^ing idiot, Matrix could and should have stopped. Anyhow, my friend was in a similar situation, car going straight was slowing down, then the driver decides he's going to run the light on Main at 33rd. Fortunately my friend had a dashcam, ICBC still assigend him 20% fault while saying the other party was 80% at fault; ICBC said this percentage won't affect his CRS rating. The driver was an "N" driver and he apologized to my friend immediately; his mom in the passenger was blaming my friend though. :rukidding:

E.D.C.5
04-28-2017, 08:16 PM
With the dash cam footage attached to your claim, I would assume the Matrix is at fault but there could also be a chance that ICBC may put you just a tad liable for not making sure it was clear before turning. Regardless, I could see this going 100% or 75% at-fault for the Matrix. Either way, your premiums won't be affected.

As long as you can view / copy the files, who cares about resurrecting the card? Just grab what you need and move on to a new one. $15, 32GB and you're all good to go again.

Cards get messed up for a variety of reasons. Heat / Cold / humidity can all shorten their lifespans. The re-write frequency is also not kind to those flash memory cells. And then there are the flash memory themselves -- the common SD cards are now all made with MLC / TLC flash memory. While they offer high storage density (ie. lots of space), their re-write endurance is not all that good. There are SLC-based memory cards that you can use, and they are usually sold under some sort of "endurance" model name. On paper, their long term costs is cheaper than using the regular MLC / TLC cards, but the difference isn't all that big, and I am personally a little skeptical on their cost effectiveness...

Now... if the card has some "juicy" videos that you absolutely need to get rid of... then that's a different story... :ifyouknow:

I use a Mac, so this may not help you out.........

I get those corrupt files once in a while. I just drag them to the trash and delete them. The OS ID's the files as locked files. Just give permission to delete them. You may need to "option-delete" the files.

I then use "Disk Utility" to reformat the SD card. I erase the files using MS-DOS (FAT) formatting. It has worked for me 100% of the time. You can also use an app called SDFormatter to reformat your SD cards. I also avoid reformatting the SD cards via the dash cam. BTW, SDFormatter is recommended by a lot of people. It is available for download in both PC and Mac.

https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/

Reformatting the card is actually good for the SD card. I do it all the time. My cards have lasted at least two years, some going on three or more, without any problems. Rewriting over and over is what causes issues, so format as often as you can.

Not 100% certain if they'd do installs as well, but as far as purchasing goes, you can't really go wrong with BlackboxMyCar (https://www.blackboxmycar.ca/).

For the most part, I find a DIY install to be pretty easy, and I won't pretend that I'm a super handy person either. Just a little trim piece removal and wire hiding is all it takes.

I'm buying another dash cam and was going to get the same model as my other ones but they now also have a capacitor version as well as a battery version. The battery version is harder to find and cost more since it seems the capacitor version has more stock. I'm just worry about the quick power off of the capacitor version and it's ability to save the last file. Which ones would you guys get and why?

Capacitor is safer as far as saving the last file goes. The capacitor itself rarely fails and isn't really a wear and tear item, so it can always save the last file. There's still a small watch battery that keeps time typically and that will eventually fail but at least your recordings are safe (just the timestamp will be wrong).

With the battery devices, when that battery dies it will shut down immediately when you turn your car off. That battery will eventually fail (probably 1-2 years in). If you're handy you can splice in a new one but it's definitely a wear and tear component.

I only have the A118C and I have no issues with the last file saving.
I also have 2 A119 and no issues as well

I would go with A118C because of the capacitor. Battery will not be charge over time and you will have last file not saving.

I did find many on various websites in the $50 range but they didn't sell as many as the person selling it for $65 with many positive feedback. Anyways I decided to order another one for $50.67 with tracking also on AliExpress so that will bring my average cost for each one down to $57.86 LOL

That 490 looks neat. Looks to be exactly like my 650S minus the wifi and built in GPS. I'd check with blackboxmycar to see if they'll stock it. When I was looking around for cameras, BBMC was the cheapest factoring shipping, border duties, and exchange. If you go with ebay, be careful when buying from the vendors who have free shipping to Canada, I did once and they used DHL which added a "handling" fee equivalent to 60% of my item's value.

Does this 490 have g-sensor notification? I currently have the DR650GW and it's annoying how there's no indication what-so-ever if my car's been hit or not.

I have very minor damage in the back of my car which I have no idea when it happened as I never noticed it until I washed my car and noticed some minor scuffs and cracked paint in my bumper. Any footage of that incident was long gone and overwritten.

And that brings up my 2nd point. My dashcam doesn't have a write-protected folder that automatically generates if it records a video triggered by the g-sensor.

My basic A118 dashcam in my other car seems to have these features that I would think are common sense to have in parking mode.

Not too sure on the ETA for DR490. I have been testing a prototype in my STI for a little over a week. Video quality is great, even though it's still 1080P, the front camera is better than the 650 as it's using the Sony STARVIS vs. the older Sony EXMOR so low light is better.

Other advantages to DR490:
- More durable rear camera cable: the DR650's coaxial cable was notoriously fragile at the tips, the DR490 uses a cable similar to a headphone jack
- Form factor: since there's no built-in wifi or gps, the size is a bit smaller but both cameras are fairly discreet IMO.
- Memory card partitioning: like most other parking mode cameras, it splits up the card into different folders for driving, events, and parking. That way, a hit and run is not going to get overwritten by regular driving or motion detection footage. DR650 records everything into one folder so it's easy for important files to get overwritten.
- Price point: in its base form the DR490 should be a fair bit cheaper than the DR650

Advantages to DR650:
- MP4 video files: The front and rear files are split up into 2 separate feeds and the .MP4 file format is just a lot more compatible. Not a big deal if you don't plan on sharing clips regularly. DR490 stitches front and rear clips into one file and records in .AVI (iirc)
- WiFi: Again, not a huge deal if you don't share clips regularly but WiFi is also very convenient for changing settings as well. Most people don't change settings after their initial setup though tbh.
- Cloud: With DR650 you can link it to your home wifi or even something like ShawOpen to send you notifications if your camera detected an event in parking mode. May be nice to have if someone is messing with your car, you can have your baseball bat ready.

How long has this product been out in the market? The ideas seem good but here are my concerns off the top of my head:

How quickly can you access the video from your phone in an event? Does it take like 30 seconds to connect and buffer? With my current dashcam, I've had issues with just getting WiFi to connect to review my videos or settings when I'm inside the car, it's slow and a PITA.

Also 2CH dashcam lasts me like half a day. Depending on quality of the videos and how sensitive the setting is (to detect incidents properly), your battery might not last long enough to support 360 recording for a practical length of time.

The fuse that plugs into the add-a-circuit that protects the original circuit will need to be same as what you pulled out, 25A in your case. The dash cams pull very low current, i don't believe they pull more than 3 or 5 amps but you'd have to check your camera specs to make sure. I believe the smallest amperage you can get for those mini fuses are 3A anyway

Started using a Blackvue 490. Despite it being replaced by BBMC (excellent customer support btw) it can't hold the time once the Power Magic cuts power.

Looks like a QC issue or design flaw in the unit. The suggested work around is to buy the separate GPS to pull the time from a sat. BBMC indicated they are waiting on a fix from BlackVue but no word when (or even if) it will be addressed.

Suggest going for one of the higher end models rather than this in the meantime.

This.

Correct me if I am wrong in this thinking.

If fault cannot be placed, both parties get hit with 50% blame.

If blame is greater than 25% for a given party, they have to pay their deductible and face a premium increase.

If a cam proves that one party is 75%+ (or typically 100%) to blame, then ICBC would only be able to:

1) claim one deductible?
2) raise the premium for one party?

Or am I incorrect in this assumption and ICBC would in fact hit the 75%+ blame party with both deducibles and premium increases?

I ask because I recall an article in a local news rag calling for reduced premiums for those who have dash cams. ICBCs response was very wishy washy, leading me to suspect the above. If blame can be clearly placed on one party by a cam - ICBC actually loses money? Financially it is in their best interest to have blame be 50/50?

I think the TW is a little different than the BV. My TW has built-in voltage detection so I don't need a separate Power Magic Prov unit (or the one Acura604 uses), I just needed to get the separate hardwire cable. It was very easy to hardwire the unit.

If fault cannot be placed, both parties get hit with 50% blame. from what I know, yes 50/50 (usually in parking lot situations if BOTH were reversing from parking spots; or both changing into the same lane simultaneously)

If blame is greater than 25% for a given party, they have to pay their deductible and face a premium increase. YES. However, if found only 25% liable, just responsible for 25% of deductible but no premium increase

If a cam proves that one party is 75%+ (or typically 100%) to blame, then ICBC would only be able to:

1) claim one deductible? I don't really know what you mean by claim one deductible, but the at-fault party (100%) would be responsible for their own deductible while the other non-liable party does not have to pay their deductible.
2) raise the premium for one party? YES, for the responsible party

Or am I incorrect in this assumption and ICBC would in fact hit the 75%+ blame party with both deducibles and premium increases? if you are assessed +50% at fault, then your premiums increase. If you're +50% at fault AND you're repairing your OWN vehicle, you will be responsible for the deductible depending on your percentage of fault.

Vico power plus, it's pricey but offers more cutoff options.
12.0V is definitely pretty low for the winter.

If the unit requires a direct hardwire kit (such as Thinkware dash cams) then you cannot use the kits with cigarette socket type outputs.

Anyone having issues with their Blackvue dr650s-2ch saving videos in random 5-20s intervals, some videos corrupted, and resetting randomly? Pretty sure its a microsd card error but it seems to be happening 1x a week despite the card. Happening so far with 3 cards, the blackvue 16gb, a lexar 633x, and lexar "high endurance". All 3 are ~1 year old so could that be the culprit.

Considering https://www.amazon.ca/SanDisk-Endurance-Monitoring-Adapter-SDSDQQ-064G-G46A/dp/B00V5Q1N1I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1514708724&sr=8-1&keywords=microsd+high+endurance now but I read that Sandisks don't like dash cams

Have you tried a firmware update?
Lexar has been pretty problematic this year, they actually killed off their removable storage side of the business although they were recently bought up by a Chinese company that is bringing it back.

These days Transcend and Samsung seem to be more reliable. SanDisk used to be quite problematic but seems like people are having decent luck with the higher capacity ones sold at Costco. Best bang for the buck IMO

Was given a Garmin DriveAssist 50 for Christmas to replace my current camera.

Still getting used to the gps + dashcam in one. Half the size of a regular gps unit and it's kinda nice having the extra features. There's a couple features that I'd need to pay 4.99USD a year to access which isn't so bad but before I do I'm trying to find out if it's worth it. There's one with 10000+ live traffic cams spread out everywhere. Anyone use it? Worth it? Useless?

I got the Transcend Premium card and have had no issues.

Formatted my Transcend 633x from my autox/track action cam and put it into the 650s. Now it's not resetting but when I try to review some footage, it shows some videos having no thumbnail and unable to playback. I'll try the firmware update tomorrow

The Blackvues are also verypicky about cards. I've used a Sandisk Ultra with no luck. I've tried cheap AData cards, but it appeared to be a bit slow (i.e. the footage would stutter on playback).

I've been using a Samsung Evo+ (128GB) with no issues for probably the last year now, so that's probably the brand I'd recommend.

On an unrelated note, I was thinking about getting a rear cam as well, but I've got a tinted rear window. (i.e. aftermarket applied tint) Does anyone have any ingenious ways to mount a rear facing cam without destroying the tint?

Looking at picking up a cam right away. Leaning towards a Blackvue DR450

My truck has prewired 'up fitter switches' basically a bank of 6 switches with relays and wires pre run. I would hardwire the camera up to that so I can turn it on and off as necessary, and the switches are also ignition power so they turn off when the truck is off. I don't need parking mode so this works perfectly.

So basically, I need a pos and neg wire from the camera, pos wires up to the switched wire and neg to a ground. What wiring kit do I need with the camera? I don't need the Power Magic Pro or anything. Do the cameras come with a pigtail?

was about to turn right and was checking for peds on the right when I heard a thud, thinking I scraped my mirror with the adjacent car but when I turned my head left to look, there was plenty of clearance

sitting in the black kia soul with Fresh Slice decal was two younger Asian males (teens/early 20s), the passenger laughs, then pull up the window as they're driving off

at the time, I assumed they threw something at my vehicle but I was already late for an appt and knew I could reference their plate on the dash cam later

dent on the quarter panel (could just be a previous door ding), after work I went back to that intersection and didn't see anything on the ground, it wasn't a coin or a rock, it sounded pretty hefty

never seen them before and wasn't driving near them until this intersection, now I'm doubting they actually threw anything and may have just been tapping on my car (seeing how they started signaling after I've already pulled up next to them...and who drives around with hefty objects ready to throw at other cars)...or may be they just can't stand the awful 50 cent music BrokeBack

It was working fine for a good 6 months ...keep in mind it was a used card in a phone that I got from Craigslist. I think it reached its maximum life of writes (no idea how long the previous owner used it for). I can’t confirm this but apparently micro SD cards have a limited life when it comes to continuous writes especially from a dashcam that’s on 24/7. I replaced it with another Samsung evo+ and it works fine. I may warranty this one as it features a 10yr warranty.

Any of those low end china brand dash cams should be powered by USB mini B connector that you can use a USB battery pack to power. The Korean ones tend to require a 12V cable for power.

I use the Viofo A119 series cameras and they work fine with my portable USB battery pack.

I have one of those USB digital multimeters, and the A119 when recording uses around 400ma's.

I have several battery packs, from 8000mah to 20000mah. Over time, I guess from daily use, they lose the advertised performance/capacity, so it's a good idea to have several packs and rotate them.

Cheap no name packs suck. I've bought a cheap no name 16000mah pack on Amazon that perform worse than the 8000mah pack I got at Costco. My packs are mostly Aukey battery packs that you can buy on Amazon.

Running in parking mode from about 10pm to 7am, the 20000mah packs are good for about 3-4 days before the battery indicator shows less than 1/4 charge, so by then I usually charge it.

?? Plug the camera into the USB battery pack ??

I bought a 10ft USB cable and tucked in the wiring on the head liner/A pillar, like I did with the dash cam 12V wiring.

This obviously only works if your dash camera can be powered by 5V USB. If you have one that requires a 12V power source, then it won't work. You'll need some kind of power converter/adapter.

At this point, I don't mind minimal as long as it has the essentials like good video quality, 2ch, good parking mode, etc. Since I've had 2 blackvues so far.. It has everything I need, but I could have opted out on the wifi and cloud if possible, since I never use it.

lol.

I was pretty shocked when I learnt Blackvue doesn't even do something basic like store footage triggered by g-sensor into a overwrite protected folder so that those clips don't get overwritten by accident.

I don't know about the other Blackvue's, but the 650 seems to have a faulty sensor sensitivity setting in parking mode. It goes form 0-100, but if you select anything from 1-100, it records non stop, but if you set it to 0, it never records even if you shake your car.

I just leave my sensitivity on 15, and it records non stop, which means I go through my entire 128gb sd card in about 3 days. Without an overwrite protection folder though, someone could have put a minor dent on the passenger side and I possibly not notice until a week later, after that files been long overwritten.

It's nice have have wifi, cloud, and all those fancy features, but it's kind of mind blowing how they prioritized all that over something basic and imo, much more essential.

Parking mode works on the A119, I have it working with the blackmagic pro.

A119 has motion sensors and will record if triggered and I have configured my blackmagic pro to power the A119 until my battery reaches a certain voltage or stay powered after a period of time.

Its a far superior product compared to blackvue, IMO.

Agreed. I have 3 A119 V2's and 1 A119 V1 and they has worked well for me so far. It does 1440p recording at 30fps and I haven't had any major issues like those reported by users with more expensive dash cameras. When on sale, it can be found for around $100-120 on Amazon.ca

The A119 V2's parking mode records at either 1fps or up to 15fps and when it detects motion or shock, goes to full on recording.

I had a A118. Video quality was better than blackvue. But the only thing was that it was 1ch, so that's why I swithed to blackvue.

Is there 2ch versions of A119? Parking mode is a must, but I have Power Magic Pro all set up already.

Right now, my 650S is acting up, or the SD card. It might be from the excessive heat from the sun. I started getting "Check SD card" error. I would take the card back home and format it and it would work again. Then it would come up again in a few days. Everything was working flawlessly for 6 months.

So I'm in the market for a new microSD card... although even those seem to be hit and miss. I'm leaning toward the SanDisk A1 though. I heard A1 is a new series that's supposedly good for dashcams, and was created after previous SanDisks' have been notoriously known to fail for dashcams.

Speaking of microSD's, I bought this "Patriot" one on Amazon last week. And I receive some generic POS. Damn scammers.

Check out dashcamtalk.com, pick a price point, check the sample videos, buy it.

Also I found that a higher framerate is more useful then higher res. 720p/60fps makes it easier to read plates than 1080p/30fps.

Otherwise you could be rolling around with a fried memory card and not know until you're in an accident. Everything else is just fluff that adds cost/heat though.

Damn scammers.
https://i.imgur.com/d647UIt.jpg

I'm getting the "check sd card" right now too on my 650. Similar to you, reformat and it works.. Just swapped to a different card yesterday to continue trouble shooting.

Also similar to your amazon experience. I bought Samsung evo cards from various sellers on Amazon, and not 1 of the 3 were identical. Each had minor differences, in packaging, the card, the adapter or a combination of it.
Talked Samsung about that and they said only way to ensure its genuine Samsung is to buy from an actual Samsung store, or the 1 Samsung seller on Amazon where the card is sold for 3x the price of the other Amazon sellers

For some reason, I tried the red Evo+ ones
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51amnjRPnTL._SY355_.jpg

And it didn't even work on my 650S. Like it wasn't compatible. I returned it and got an exchange, and same thing. So then I decided to just get a full refund. Really weird. The microSD worked fine on the computer.

I know this model is pretty popular for dashcams. I wonder if I received a weird batch that didn't work with the blackvue dashcam.

Not a fan of samsung sd cards for cams, the stock one that came with my DR400 many years ago would always go corrupt and any ones I bought after didnt work either.

I’ve tried :

Samsung evo+ 128 gig - 2 of them got corrupted.

Lexar 64gig 633x - 1 so far got into read only mode

Sandisk 128gig - forget it! Check SD card nonstop.

Blackvue 16gig - worked fine but needed occasional reformat.

NOTE : from the blackboxmycar site : never use an sdcard that is rated to the max capacity of the dashcam. I.e. use a 64gig for a 128gig capable dashcam, not a 128gig Sd card.

So both my cars have DR650.

DR650GW
-Samsung Evo+ 128gb - 1 year usage and then went into read only mode.
-Lexar 633x 128gb - about 1 year now, so far, still working.

DR650S
-Samsung Evo+ 128gb - Wasn't compatible, exchanged for a 2nd one, wasn't compatible again.
-Patriot LX 64gb - 6 months and now it's going into check sd error intermittently.

Do any of you find the Lexar 633x cards kind of tight fitting? Like they are slightly thicker? The one I'm using seems to get stuck in my DR650 when I try to take it out, via pushing it in, and it doesn't always spring back out cause it's kind of jammed.

i think the key to er... survivability in the heat for the dashcams...is to disable parking mode IF parked in the raw heat for hours on end. once I get the 650s back i'll be trying it that way... then once temps cool down around aug/sept it'll get switched back to parking mode.

Sorry should clarify, there are better parking mode dash cams out there which tend to work a bit better than what the A119 can do. Thinkware for example is one of the better ones as it announces any triggers during parking mode.

Luckily didn't hit me but knew he was extremely close to me because of how low my car is. Almost tempted to get out and just look but didn't... temptations though.. :considered:

This whole MLC vs SLC vs TLC sdcard s have been going on forever...

From march2015:

#14
I decided to do some quick internet research on this to understand the characteristics of SLC and MLC (TLC is a form of MLC, from what I read). Everything I read seems to point to the opposite of what is being said here. SLC is more reliable, faster, and more expensive than MLC. MLC is found in most consumer electronics because it is cheaper to produce but has a shorter life than SLC. SLC generally uses lower voltages than MLC. TLC stores 3 bits per cell, while MLC stores 4 bits per cell - meaning TLC wears slower due to less read/write cycles per cell. SLC stores 1 bit per cell - thus even longer life.

http://www.integralmemory.com/faq/what-difference-between-slc-and-mlc-flash-memory-chips

http://www.eetimes.com/document.asp?doc_id=1279762&page_number=3

http://www.computerweekly.com/feature/MLC-vs-SLC-Which-flash-SSD-is-right-for-you

All things being equal, it seems SLC>TLC>MLC in terms of speed and longevity. Of course performance varies based on the manufactures implementation.

I'm no expert, but it seems for long life and faster read/writes, SLC is the way to go (but more expensive). A quick search on Amazon yielded some SLC Micro SD cards -16GB going for $60 by Industrial Micro.

Did you catch the plate and car model?
First thing is to research if that SUV model carries a spare on the underside of the car as opposed to in the trunk. If you have a plate, ICBC can do some investigating like seeing if that car still has their spare tire.

What damages did it do on your car?

I just read this:
https://www.thebalance.com/help-i-hit-an-object-in-the-road-527094

Object Lying in the Road = Collision Claim
Hitting an object lying in the road can cause front end damage and undercarriage damage to your vehicle. Whether the object is debris dropped by a pickup truck, a pot hole, or a fallen tree you are looking at a collision claim on your car insurance. Expect to pay a deductible when filing a collision claim. In this case, it will be considered an at-fault claim which will affect your car insurance rates in the future, unless you have purchased accident forgiveness. Insurance carriers consider objects in the road avoidable accidents which makes it an at-fault accident.

Unfortunately, if it's a black and white rule, your insurance rate will be affected. Unless somehow your dashcam video will prove otherwise, cause in my opinion, that was an unavoidable situation.

ssjGoku69

Thanks AzNightmare, it looks like I'm left with damage I have to fix this myself from something that seemed unavoidable.. But from the looks of the damage, I'm hoping it's just cosmetic only... will need to check alignment for sure though.

I had the same scenario happen to my MR2 on Knight bridge... a black wheel chock had fallen off a tow truck, I was driving at night, zero chance of seeing it... my car with brand new Gram Lights on it hit the chock, went BANG so hard and bent both my brand new passenger side rims and blew out both tires.

I call into ICBC... she asked me if it fell off the tow truck in front of me and I said no... so she said well then you should have seen it, road hazard, accident claim against you. I was like "So if I said it fell off the tow truck in front of me, it's hit and run and only a deductible?" and she said "Yup, but you already admitted it was just on the road so you're on the hook"... how the fuck they expect I can see a black object on a black road at night is beyond me, but I had to eat it all.

So, tell them it fell off the truck in front of you and don't say shit about a dashcam or otherwise and you should be covered. Worth a shot, even if they say no you can just choose not to have your insurance cover it.

Speed2K

It looked like it fell off the truck though, no? Looking ahead, I didn't notice it on the road when the other cars drove by.

AzNightmare
08-17-2018, 07:13 PM
Just so happen that area of road was an unlit spot, so hard to see where it originated from. I would try calling in as suggested and claim the tire fell off directly in front of you if you want to give it a shot...

Although, trying to play "detective" here (cause I kind of like over analyzing things), and re-watching the moment over and over again, I actually think the tire may have been there already. If you watch the (white) vehicle in front of the SUV that was in front of you, it looks like his right side tires crossed out of his lane and then went back into his lane, as if he was avoiding something.

The lane change from the SUV in front seemed a bit unnatural. As if it delayed moving into the adjacent lane. If you use the dashed white line as reference, you can see his right tires move past the line as it begins to change lanes, then the SUV drives along the line for a slight moment, then once past the tire on the ground, it continues to move into the adjacent lane. It's subtle, but you can kind of see it almost looks like it changed it's path to avoid something.

The tire also seems to be too stably flat on the ground from suddenly falling off, and from a SUV going that speed. There's a high probability the tire would be wobbling considering tires are bouncy.

Anyhow, those are just my opinions from what I see. It's dark and the video quality is only so good... so it's hard to gather conclusive info.

Is it just the Youtube compression or is it me? I couldn't make out any license plates except for the car directly in front of you at the 152/Hwy10 light. The image is pretty soft for anything that isn't' dead centre.

Wide angle is a double edged sword. While you can see more, the wider view also means distortion/fuzziness on the outside portion of the video.

G1W is known for dying between the 9-12 month mark, or at least start acting up around then. I switched over to a Thinkware F50 for my secondary cars (I think there's a new one out called the F100). Mine died at the 26 month mark, so I guess I'm lucky. I actually ended up picking up a Vantrue T2, which comes with a super capacitor rather than battery.

Funny thing is that my G1W revived itself, when my Vanture T2 came. I suspect it to be a temperature issue.

1080 will have better low light (larger pixels)

no real advantage of using 4k just yet, the blackvue dr900s is barely better than the dr750s

With my older dashcams I set them to 720p60 instead of 1080p30, I find the added framerate more useful than overall res (especially at picking out plates of moving vehicles).

I picked up a few new cameras for my new car the other day. Canadian Computer is clearing out their old DDpai mini cameras, as these ones are now a few models old. Picture quality is good, install was easy. For $50, I bought two. Only a few left in Vancouver and Lansdowne. https://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=37_1251&item_id=103649

I checked out the night shots on my dashcam and found a lot of light pillars/light streaks likely due to micro scratches on the windshield. Has anyone tried any DIY glass cutting kits to fix scratched glass?

the glare is caused by the curvature in your windshield
try an ND filter

ND filter just cuts light you need a polarized filter.

Both of my vehicles were broken into sometime last night. All they took was my cheap dash cam, so I guess I'm in the market for a new one.

derp brain fart on my part

switching gear,

let's talk parking mode

current: r975 with voltage cut off 12.4v to prevent deep cycling the battery = inadequate run time for smaller car batteries like in a Civic

new: 750s-2ch, thinking of pairing it with cellink neo, but i have short drives (dedicated battery wont get recharged fully after being depleted, but i just want to set it and forget it)

is there a way to 'geofence' so i have parking mode automatically disabled when i'm garaged at home?

What are you guys using for SD cards these days? I tend to have memory issues before actual camera failures which is a little annoying.

Sandisk or Samsung high endurance cards (for security cams and dash cams). Knock on wood so far so good.

some people say "high endurance" cards are a gimmick and have a regular Samsung micro sd working cards for 3 years.

so its possible peace of mind buying high endurance memory cards over anything else.

Before I used whatever was affordable from NCIX. It was usually ADATA, PNY, Patriot or some weird name cards like that. After like a year those cards would only record sometimes or not at all and I only found out when I was going to pull a video from it. Since then I've switched to Kingston cards and it's been a few years and all of them are still working fine today.
