I have had my blackvue DR-500 for about 2 weeks now, I have had the power magic pro turned off this entire time (its hardwired in, but I just wanted the camera to turn on and off with the car).

Havnt had any incidents or anything funny to upload so far, but I have taken the card out of the camera and played with the blackvue app and seen the video. I must say everything looks pretty good. Aside from the high price tag of $400 it is a very nice setup.

I have to plastidip around the lens black though, as it is a little noticeable in my windshield.

I don't believe the GT550W has parking mode.

Nevermind, yes it does!

J.C

haven't hardwired it yet so haven't gotten a chance to use it fully

what i did notice was that if your parked for awhile and nothing is moving, it stops recording and when movement is detected it starts recording, so yes it does have a parking mode
you can also set how sensitive it is

i can also get a couple videos uploaded tonight if you guys want

^ Does it run on battery power in park mode, since you said you don't have it hard-wired? If so, even better!

Some videos would be good, particularly night-time videos.

Any other complaints in general with it?

Don't know if it has parking mode, but I use the MateGo MG188. I've been using it for almost a year and it is very reliable. Full 1080P HD, and a lot cheaper than BlackVues.

Just got my GT550w, pretty happy with the video quality at night and in fog. Great value for the price, would definitely recommend!

One thing though, do you find that it takes forever to upload to youtube due to the format it records in?

I've gone a different direction than all of you and got this little camera

Mobius Actioncam Full HD Sports Camera 1080P 30FPS 720P 60FPS Pocket Camcorder | eBay (http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Mobius-ActionCam-Full-HD-Sports-Camera-1080P-30FPS-720P-60FPS-Pocket-Camcorder-/151071891306)

$70 bucks shipped. Very good quality for the price.

Doubles up as an action cam if you guys are into that. Con is that it doesnt have parking mode yet but it is being developed with new firmware constantly so that might be on the way.

I've used it since July with no issues. The thing does get a bit hot sitting in the sun but has not caused any issues yet.

I narrowed down my choices to the G1W and Mobius.
I ordered the G1W but thought I would shot some questions to you about the Mobius.

For the power supply, did you hard-wired it or just use a cigarette to USB and from there, to Mobius?

Is the narrow angle lens an issue?

I personally hardwired mine. Just took apart a 12V to 5V usb adapter and soldered one end to an add a fuse and the other to the usb cable.

Nothing wrong with using one of those car USB chargers. I chose to hard wire since i only have 2 power outlets in the entire car.

Narrow lens is not an issue from what i experience. The seller does offer a wider lens if you decide you need one for around 12 bucks.

Here are a couple clips. If you watch in HD the quality really is comparable to that of a GoPro.

Heads up to those planning on hardwiring, you can get the add-a-circuit fuse taps at Lordco for ~$8 on account; Canadian Tire sells the same for like $18 or something ridiculous.

Of course if you can wait for shipping, buying online from China is much cheaper.

I have about 10 of these piggyback fuses. I also have a huge case of fuses (Lordco had it in their clearance). If anyone needs any fuses or piggyback fuses shoot me a PM and ill toss em your way. I didn't realize these things were like 10 bucks. I was about to throw them out...

Ok, I've decided to go with the GT550W

A few questions:

- What's a good brand/type for a dual power outlet for the car? I need to charge my phone and run the dash cam as well

- Is the only way to have the dash cam on during parking is to have it hard wired to the car?

- If it is hard wired, won't it drain the battery overnight? It would be taking video 24/7 essentially.

Thanks in advance!

A few questions:

Any 12v socket splitter should be fine, albeit messier than hard-wiring.

- Is the only way to have the dash cam on during parking is to have it hard wired to the car?

If your car's socket is always-on (rare with new cars but can be found on older cars), then you wouldn't have to have it hard-wired. Or I guess you could re-wire the socket to be 12v constant rather than switched.

- If it is hard wired, won't it drain the battery overnight? It would be taking video 24/7 essentially.

Overnight might not be TOO big an issue if you drive daily, the cam only draws 1.5A max (disclaimer: this advice is provided without guarantee, if you do get a dead battery having parked I bear no responsibility  ). However, to be safe a power-kit like PowerMagic or iTronics ITB-80 will automatically shut the cam off when the battery drops below a certain voltage.

Thanks in advance!

So if ASR isn't around anymore, where can I go locally to get a good dash ca'm? (Richmond) I pick up my new car this week, and I do 95% of my driving in Richmond. Cost isn't too much of an issue since I know eventually it will pay for itself :( also, if no where installs them that's okay, I have many many years of auto experience, I could hardwire it myself. But I'd prefer a professional install.

Well, if you want a dash cam and for it to be installed, give Soundsgood a call. Keith or Mike will set you up. They can get just about any make of dash cam, and installs are thier specialty.

As for price, $300.00 ish will get you into the more decent cams. Cheaper cams will do the job, but not as well. It's all about your needs. You may not need the fancy ones. For me, it comes down to night performance and the ability to adjust settings. Others just want something on their screens and don't care about seeing the details, like the freckles on a chick's arms............. keeping it clean, LOL.

Yeah, I don't need GPS or speed or stuff like that. And I don't need to see if the person walking in front is blue or brown eyed lol. But night time is important, and I definitely want a parking mode. Most parking modes are motion activated correct? I work somewhere with extremely high parking lot traffic, and alot of lazy fuck who push carts across the lot instead of walk 25' so if my car gets dented I'd love for that to get caught (don't think a g sensor would catch that)

For installing it myself, I wouldn't have a problem with wiring etc but the cars have curtain airbags an a-pillar airbags and stuff. The last thing I would want to do is interfere with a system like that :p

at least get something that has a high enough resolution to show license plates. after watching some of these videos and on youtube, the quality is so bad on some all you can tell is the make model and color, which isn't always good enough.

n-motion is another option for getting a camera, although they told me a month ago to wait for the new models coming out that offer rear view as well.

What blackvue did you have and what happened?

I must say so far my blackvue has been flawless (knock on wood). I have the DR500.

The only disappointment is that I bought mine then the 2CH DR550 came out like a month later.

Been using my DR400 since the very first groupbuy arranged on revscene. Ater using the supplied microSD card and having times i would find out it wasnt recording, i eventually upgraded to a 32gb microSD for more storage space and I havent had big issues since.

The overheating I havent had major problems with it besides being hot to the touch when i remove it. The only other thing is the screen has become a tad fuzzy which was a result of the overheating issues going on. But I just havent had time to take it apart and clean the lens.

I've taken to blowing my AC at the windshield during hot days to try and cool it down a bit, though frankly I haven't had any overheating issues with it (DR400G). Only problem I've had was the "please check the SD card" message, but a new micro sd changed that.

So I had a couple times (DR-400G-II) where the following would happen in order:

For about 4 months now my camera NEVER says "blackvue is now shutting down" - the light would be on for a few seconds, and then turn off. My files would be fine.

I would turn the car off with the power magic on, then turn the power magic off. Normally, it's supposed to say "Blackvue is now shutting down", but instead, it would just cut, no message, and all my files would be corrupt.

I could get around this by turning the power magic off first, and then the car, but still was annoyed.

So I researched, and found the LiPo battery inside drains completely; bought a replacement from ebay, jury-rigged it because it was slightly bigger than the stock one, and now everything seems fine!

It could be simply a timer chip. Put it underneath a microscope, you can easily read the numbers off it. CE manufacturers are cheap, they would just use timer chips to charge up batteries (instead of sensing the state of the cell).

The freaking battery is next to the CMOS? No wonder these blackvue things fail.

Since these things are so easy to dissemble. Wire the new cell directly on to where the old cell would go (on the IC board). Or just expose the old cells connections and connect them directly to the new cell.

You might get into a packaging issue.. it looks like your old cell is a lot smaller than your new one.

How can I tell if it's a timer chip? lol I'll probably just solder the things together for safety.

The old cell is physically a bit smaller, but it's also bloated, which I read is a sign of a failed li-po battery.

If you use a microscope and look at the printing on a chip.. chances are it will have a sequence of 555 that's a timer chip.

I think the components of the batches of the $50 cameras changes so often it is best to see what others say.

Just a quick update the the replacement li-po is doing fine. My car is still not burned to the ground, and everything is ok!

The original battery has a small IC/chip attached directly onto it; remove it, solder it between your ebay battery and the 2-pin connector, and just wedge it in as best as you can.

Personally, I think the Lukas LK7700 with GPS for $140 is probably the best bang + quality for the buck right now. 7700 uses a Samsung sensor, 7900 is more expensive but uses the Sony Eximor.

The problem I have with cheaper cameras is they are built so flimsily, you are never quite sure if they are recording properly.

Has anyone had problems with the audio recording of their Blackvue?

I'm running the new DR550GW-2CH and for a few days now, I've lost audio recording. I've played around toggling the audio on/off and even gone into the settings and double checked that, nothing. The only thing left is to plug the micro SD into my PC and see what's going on in there. Just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience.

I just received my GT680W last week and it is a great camera. It's very small and great day and night videos. The build quality is much higher than the G1W that I have in my other car and much smaller too.

It does have motion detection parking mode if that is what you're asking but you will need some kind of voltage regulator though.

For voltage regulator? They are ever available on ebay and amazon Battery Discharge Prevention | Dash Cam Talk (http://dashcamtalk.com/battery-discharge-prevention/)

For the GT680W, foxoffer is a good place to buy from. The new RX300 appears to be good too as tests shown RX300 almost equal the GT680W. I would only get that if it was cheaper as the GT680W just looks more high-quality; don't know if it is in actuality thou.

I believe in one of the dashcam threads, they mention magic power or something similar to that from ASR locally and I am sure local sponsors have them as well.

One item you have to worry about when incorporating a LiIon USB pack. They are not designed for automotive environment (ie spikes, surges), or being constantly charged. In the end, you will still need a circuit to decide measure the LiIon voltage and the car's operation mode / amperage to decide whether to charge it or not. Since weight is not an issue, NiMH offer a safer chemistry (try explaining your jerry rigged camera battery burst into flames to ICBC), and a charging system which is easier to work with (it is more linear). I suggest use a 555 timer chip and turn off the charging circuit for 8AA NiMH batteries after 30 minutes.

Also USB supplies 5V you need to step it up to 9V and half amp for most automotive cameras.

If you decide to go ahead with the LiIon solution do consider to incorporate a backup power source instead of 100% relying on the battery. It would suck if the battery life is shortened and the camera doesn't power up when you need it most.

Chances are the police car had been tailing the 2 cars behind you for a while.

its not a highway, thats king george blvd in surrey. thats one of the 3-4 spots where cops are always camping out. speed down that stretch of road is 70km/h. somewhere between 80-100km/h is what most people are cruising at down that stretch of road and its why cops are always there.

Lukas or Finevue. You do tend to get what you pay for. That said, I've got a Blackvue dash cam that only cost me a couple hundred, but like many others, it's been suffering from various issues.

Mind you, it's already saved me a bunch of money through ICBC because I didn't have to pay my deductible a couple times after being hit and the camera catching the other persons licence plate.

Yeah, I'm just worried about keeping it plugged in overnight; whether it would damage the battery or over heat in the glove box while I'm out. The RavPower seems to have more than enough power for the dash cam to run over night, maybe I'll pick that up instead of the PNY.

I would suggest you keep the Li battery pack in a metal container. If those things catch on fire, you really don't want it to be in the glove box (papers, plastic and usually a wire harness or 2).. or worse your car in the garage and it catches on fire. (chances are you won't be able to move the car out). Imagine what ICBC and house insurance would say.

At least wire it so that the battery only get charged during once the car is underway (so no surges etc) is probably the safest method. For the safest method go to RP electronics and get a Pb acid battery, those things have less volatile chemistry.

I'd argue against that last part, there was a discussion on this quite a while back. IIRC railway crossings are not defined as an 'intersection' in the MVA, and so the only rule is that you have to stop at the red; there is no rule that you can't proceed after stopping given a clear path ahead. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Still, close call there. I've never seen anything like that before, heh.

:duh: on the railway crossing. I was trying to look in ghostrider's video to see what the no stopping sign said, but i couldn't make it out.

I'm really interested in knowing what part of the MVA leads godwin and ghostrider to believe that you can't cross the tracks in that situation.:accepted:

And from the video alone, one can't determine for certain that the car was being pulled over for crossing the tracks. What if it was a cellphone check or seat belt check? The cop was going up to everyone's window, not just the car that crossed the tracks.

I think it is New West, Braid Street and Brunette. You are not supposed to cross train crossings on red lights. You have to stay put on the stop lines.
Yea same with Alderbridge one.. but no one does this.. Whenever I stop at the line, There is always idiots on the next lane that cuts in front me, thinking im giving them the lane :suspicious:

They should just Move the "Stop Line" behind the X'ing..

Here is the followup to the RavPower 10400mAh battery and TW680.
I fully charged the battery until this morning, then I plug the battery into the camera at 8AM. The camera was set on for all the time (not motion detect) and it ran from 8AM to 5:30PM (9.5 Hours) at which time there was 2 bars left on the battery. I had to use the camera so I stopped the test. As far as I am concerned, it looks like this fits my needs. The battery never got warm but the camera got slightly warm only.

Thanks for the update! Do you basically run the dash cam off the battery pack the whole time now or just unplug the power cord and plug in the battery pack whenever you park?

wow.. 9.5hrs on a battery pack.. nice... did your dashcam get hot..

Vulgate

Dmak - Right now the dashcam runs of the car battery while driving and plugged into the external battery when parked. Fortunately or unfortunately, my trips are very short on a day to day basis and the car is at home 95% of the time, so it may be easier just to leave it plugged into the external battery pack at all times. Each individual will be different depending where you park, parking duration, length of trip, etc...

Enzo - negative, the dashcam was barely warm for the 9.5 hours and the battery wasn't any warmer than room temperature.

So far, either the GTW680 draws little current or the battery is pretty strong, or both but I am happy with both items.

Can you leave the cam plugged into the battery pack permanently and wire the battery pack to a switched circuit so it charges the pack whenever the car is on? (i.e. so you don't have to keep switching plugs)

Vulgate
03-20-2014, 09:11 AM
Yes you can. However if the external battery pack is drained, it will take a while to fully charge battery to full again. Unfortunately I have not measure the time to fully charge from depletion yet so I can't tell you the time. Also this varies with the battery pack size you have. So unless you plan to drive for a long time, you may have to take the battery out and charge it overnight in the house.

I just read external battery packs have a running temperature range and storage temp range. For ravPower battery that I have, it has a running temperature of 0C to 40C and and storage temp of -20C to 60C so those temps aren't that high for the summer heat. Like others side, you don't the battery to explore in the car.

Anyone order a dash cam off fox offer and get a defective charger? Specifically for my GT680W, I just received it. When I plugged it in to the cigarette outlet no power what so ever. Even when I push the "ON" button that is suppose to light up. I plugged something else into the cigarette lighter and there is definitely power.

Any solutions? I've already emailed them about it not working, don't know how much help they would be though.

There is a life span for SDCards.. however format it again with the formatter from SDcard.org (https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/). Another point for getting a large card so you don't overwrite the data as often.

If that's not the problem, it could be that the voltage is not high enough. The system draws more power during write cycles.

Should it not be loop recording? Try reformatting the card, and when you plug in the card if it says files are corrupted click no and see what it shows you. I've had the issue where clicking yes and letting it "fix" them nukes everything on cheap thumbdrives before.

Also try using a different card reader if all else fails.

1. So I have the cigarette lighter already occupied with something else. Is it possible to record without the car charger? Or would i have to buy a splitter?

2. Just plugged the USB to my camera & the cam. How long does it usually take to charge? ....it is charging right now right LOL

TIA :)

Answer to Q1: From previous threads and from ASR thread, you can buy an aftermarket voltage regulator so you don't drain your battery. That is assuming if you want the camera to be on when the car is off.
When the car is on, then you can plug into cigarette lighter plug or aftermarket mini usb plug (to the fuse box), but the camera will be off when the car is off.

Answer to Q2: Don't really have an answer as I never timed it but this really doesn't matter as the battery doesn't have to be charged in order to use the dashcam so if it is plugged in, you can use it right away. The internal battery doesn't last long. I have not test it yet but I do not think it would last more than 5 mins on internal battery alone.

Start by finding fusebox and which fuse you want to tap into. If you want 24/7 then tap into something like door locks which are always powered. If you want recording with ignition then go for something like accessory or wipers.

Buy an add a fuse from lordco for 10 bucks

Cut off cigarette lighter end of power cable and connect positive to add a fuse and negative to ground bolt near fusebox.

Put fuse + original fuse into fusebox slot

Run wiring up headliner and hide in pillars = :fullofwin:

If the recorder uses 12V that'll work, otherwise you'll blow it up if it's expecting 5V from a USB mini plug. If it's got a USB mini/micro get an "add a cig outlet" from Princess Auto, wire that up then plug the recorder into that. Hide the plugs under the dash and then if you ever want to disconnect it or replace it it's easy.

Your camera is powered by a USB plug? What?

Who the hell would design a dash camera for a car where almost everything operates at 12V, to accept 5V?

somehow, 16gb and 32 gb is the same price at amazon.

Would there be a difference in quality from the actual recorded 1080p vs 720p...

Techmoan - Techmoan - Blackvue DR500GW-HD WiFi GPS Car Camera (http://www.techmoan.com/blog/2013/3/31/blackvue-dr500gw-hd-wifi-gps-car-camera.html)

This guy has a zip you can download of the raw 1080 vs 720p recorded videos. Youtube quality will almost always be worse than the raw video itself making 1080 and 720 similar.

Nice. Is that part of the mirror stock or is it some sort of enclosure you made/bought?

I accidentally bought an the wrong enclosure which had a hollow point to the front that fit the camera lens perfectly.

debating between this and a go pro. i know go pro can't be use for dash cam but i like how it has multiple mounting option for when i autocross. seems like mobius can be both a dash cam and a action cam.

how does one set the camera up with mobius? there is no lcd or iOS app i could use to make sure it is pointed right?

Mine does that sometimes. It won't turn on so I pull the power plug from the camera, wait 5 seconds, plug it in and it starts up no problem.

Anyone with a BlackVue DR380G-HD?

this is the second time the camera wouldn't turn on; not working.

First time it was just plugged into cig lighter; then it broke down and the place I got it at replaced it for free the same time they hardwired it into my car with Power Magic Pro.

2 weeks after up until last night, it won't turn on again even when plugged in and with PowerMagic Pro working. Anyone have this problem?

I will contact the shop I bought it/installed at, but just wanna ask anyone else have a problem of the camera not turning on?

I've been told it's the MicroSd card needing formatting, it's helped with mine

You have to pop the card out and read it off line.. if you want something with remote access via app the only option are dashcam with wifi. I suggest you go to Dashcamtalk (http://forum.dashcamtalk.com/) for options, people are way more knowledgeable there.

These cheaper chinese cams like the G1W and Mobius have come a long way in terms of video quality.

The BlackVu/FineVu Korean ones may have more features (GPS, dual-channel, etc.) but for strict video quality the Chinese ones are much better value.

Go here and look: Pittasoft BlackVue | DashCamTalk (http://forum.dashcamtalk.com/forums/pittasoft-blackvue.6/)

I think having more than 1 channels is too complicated. SD cards are cheap, cameras are cheap.. just buy 2 instead of having 1 point of failure.

Remember these things sit in the car and being exposed most of the time to UV and high heat.. 1 year of reliability is considered normal.. 2 year a bonus.. 3+ years a near miracle.

My blackvue DR-500 is still going strong. Had it for the better part of a year if I remember correctly.

Only problem I had was the adhesive mount failed on my one hot day, and the camera was dangling when I got back in the car. I fixed that with some new 3M double sided adhesive and its been good since.

I would disagree with that.. Vico etc are moving to 5V / USB. Ambarella released their 5V SoC, that's why there are so many "lower cost" cameras going to 5V.. (Ambarella is also the supplier for GoPro cameras). The only hold outs are Sony.

The fact is most new cars have USB connectors. 5V makes the camera smaller and generate less heat on the chipset.. it is a no brainer. Yes it is harder to find the 5V bus in cars, since it is different for different makes it is not impossible. So for barebone dashcam I think 5V is just fine.

However if you want the kitchen sink, ie dual channel, touch screen, OBD diagnostics etc consider the new Lukas Lukas (OBD2 + dual channels + touch screen) of course you need 12V.

Higher quality dashcams are powered by the 12V output, and lower quality dashcams are more likely than not, to be powered by USB cables.

Ive been using it for a few months now, excellent camera IMO.

You can update the camera and configure it by plugging it through USB into your computer.

Don't get a gopro thats just asking for your windows to be smashed if you intend to leave it there. Its also a pain in the ass to start and stop recording. A dash cam is meant to be put in place and forgotten till you need to pull the footage.

My originally plan if i do get a go pro is too forget using it as a dash cam and just delicate it for shooting video mainly at autox days. Mobius got my attention because its a self proclaim action camera and it has the bonus option of being a good dash cam. I don't really care about having a dash cam, would be cool but getting a cam to record my track days are more important atm lol.

i got a DR500 installed, i realise that when i have wifi on, the cam itself start heating by itself. i don't know is it because the wifi actually causing the heat, some of my friends have the 550, with wifi ON, the cam temperature seems normal. still hot, but not to a level cause overheating.

i heard some reviews that the overheating is cause by wifi on all the time and power magic pro are kept the cam running 24/7. i don't know is it true.

Wifi does transmit in the microwave band.. so it is rather normal for the device to heat up.

I've used a Garmin directly below my mobius and there has been no issue. This camera was originally catered towards a bunch of R/C flying enthusiasts with their drones and planes. I imagine those would have GPS trackers at the least so if there was a problem it would've probably been fixed.

How often do you drive your car and what's your battery condition. If the dash cam is on for 2 days straight your battery should still be fine to crank the car over. If you wire it into the wiper fuse with a fuse tap then it'll turn on and off with the car.

If you're really worried about it 12.4V is your number. For more info refer to this site Battery Discharge Prevention | Dash Cam Talk (http://dashcamtalk.com/battery-discharge-prevention/)

However, the 15 inch Retina MacBook Pro running Mavericks that I just purchased can only play the clips, as Perian isn't compatible with that OS. Not sure if iMovie can be used..... perhaps VLC. My VicoVation TF2+ Premium keeps crapping out on me. Will randomly shut off (without the shutoff screen animation and sound) and I cannot get it to power on unless I play with the on off switch a couple times without the power line plugged in. After messing around the button a couple times, maybe the 4th or 5th time plugging the power line back in, does the unit power back on.

Not sure if it's the cable that's gone bad, or the unit itself...

It's been driving me insane on every drive, as I have to go through this process at least once a day.

So what's the general consensus on a good dashcam? Last one I used was the Blackvue DR380 (or maybe 300... can't remember anymore :lol), but I left it installed on the last vehicle I sold. Looking to pick up a new cam once I'm down on the coast in a couple weeks, so it has to be something sold by a local shop. Have the Blackvue's gotten any better recently in regards to the sensor overheating or should I try my luck with a Finevue? Any other brands sold locally I should consider instead?

*Waves*

Blackvue has resolved the overheating issue they had with the DR400. Basically replaced with a different model.

DR380 basically got replaced with the DR3500. Basically cosmetics have changed and has gone full HD (1080P) and optional GPS.

We've sold quite a few DR3500, 500 and 600's and haven't had anyone complain. A couple of the guys here are running the new DR600 and DR650-2CH, so far so good. Mind you these model's are pretty new, so only time will tell.

PM me if you're interested. We'll have our RS mod hookup for you ;)

I've had the Finevu for nearly a year. It's been really good. Solid performer. Night footage is average, but daytime is pretty awesome. I swore never to get another Blackvue again. They may be better now, but I'm totally happy with the Finevu CR 500HD. I was about to get a Lukas dashcam because they're pretty good, too. Alas, an RS member had a new in box, Finevu for sale and I jumped on it. If the Finevu gets stolen or lost or dies, imma gonna git me a Lukas 79 whatever. I have so many other dashcams lying around, including the now famous buttplug dashcam and the Mobius. Both are going to be rear dashcams when I find the time to install them. Lomac check into the Mobius dashcam, it has to be one of the best for the price dashcams. So small and discrete. It can double as a cam for helmets, drones, whathaveyou. RC guys are using it for all kinds of toys. It's that small.
