I'm starting to have a feeling that mounting a cam facing the front while driving is necessary. To protect myself, my car as well as occupant inside my vehicle if ICBC wants prove.

I will be setting one up shortly. A friend runs Autolismo and the kits are pretty reasonably priced (anywhere from $50-110). Small change considering protection it can provide in the event you have an accident.

same, but make sure u have a camera that records. 170 degrees, so u can tell whats happening at a wider angle.

edit: dealextr has quite a few options. autolismo is basically dealext stuff plus u get a year warranty with deal ex.

this came in handy , when i saw a courier driving crazy on broadway, in and out, cutting people off....extracted picture /video , sent to company, got email from manager sayin "ill have the driver in for re-education"

Anyone have pictures of it after it's been mounted? Does it at all look like MORE of an incentive for say, a potential break in?

Exactly. When I was looking into dash cameras, I saw a lot of HD ones going for $2xx. They all were just HD interpolated by software. In other words, fake HD, not high quality at all. You're better off using the VGA mode if you have these kinds.

There are true HD ones but I can't find any $2xx.

I'm not sure whether HD would be necessary or not. But yeah, I guess reading license plates off would be pretty important.

Interesting, does it just memory wipe when you shut off the car and start recording again when you're moving?

i heard of one that records segments of like 15 minutes and makes it into 1 video file, and when it runs out of memory (depending on your memory card capacity), it will start rewriting the files one by one from the beginning.

i havent researched into these, so there might be other systems out there ;p

EDIT: worded that poorly. it makes a new video clip file for every 15 minutes it records. and erases old clips when memory card runs out of space ;]

the problem with cameras like go pro that doesn't have the auto on feature, is that it is a bitch to have to manually turn the cam on every time you use it or have to turn it off after you park. im actually looking to upgrade cuz mine doesn't have the auto on/ shut off feature

yes as mentioned, theres a few flaws with the gopro hd

1: its not auto on/off
2: it doesnt record over the files
3: it used to battery powered only, but now new firmware update has enabled the gopro to be charged while recording
4: it doesnt have screen to show what is recording so its a pita to aim correctly

although most of the flaws can be fixed, its just a pita to set it up and get it running properly, not to mention the car suction cup is HUGE

I started driving around with a Flip miniHD camera hooked up to a suction camera rig I purchased off DealExtreme. I was looking @ some of the camera stuff they had on DealExtreme but I was suspicious about the quality. I stumbled upon the Flip website and noticed they were having a sale because Flip was being shut down by Cisco. It sounds strange but I have the suction cup on the top left corner of my windshield and I have the Flip recording upside down. I'll some some photos of the setup later on. It sounds strange but it works great and its in HD. When you view the videos, you just have to flip it around 180 degrees. VLC will allow you to do that for example. The whole setup costs about $130 which is cheaper than my $300 collision deductible I figure if I ever get into an accident and I need to prove my side of the story. The advantage of using the flip or any other flash camcorder is that you have a decent camcorder around if you are not driving ... say if you get caught up in a riot? =) The bad thing about the Flip I'm using is the battery life is weak @ only 1 hour. It'll record my drive to work which is 30 minutes and then I can charge it @ work but if I'm out with my friends, that's a different matter.

Not to sound like an asshole, but everyone always MENTIONS "group buys" rarely does anyone do anything about it. In my experience with doing one on RS, you have to trust the people who are even interested in the item you're doing. To do my mirror one was SO tedious its not even funny. Heads up to the guy who does end up setting one up.

This is why you only deal with legit members or those who have a good history.

Thankfully, we can quickly figure this out by searching the member's post.

It may sound unfair the new guys but it's a precaution that most should take when considering organizing a group buy.

All the group buys I've had on RS have been successful ones, however, it is mainly due to dealing with people that are regulars on this forum.

for the group buys i've organized on vcc, it's always involved a non-refundable deposit. this has been great to weed out the flakers at an early stage. everyone loves to jump on board when it seems like a great idea but tend to bail just before payment comes up.

But it's a lot better than some of the cheaper cameras I've seen out there. Some of the cameras I've seen have so much noise + dropped framerates, that it's useless.

You don't. If you look at the picture, it has a car charger and usb. So either plug it in to your car charger to charge it up or charge it through your computer USB port while you transfer the videos. A go pro works similar but I guess this one has better battery life?

I prefer a go pro(Though that's more expensive) ;) Oh and this feels like an advertisement for Autolismo.

I'm definitely interested in these, I don't care about the mapping and stuff but the rolling memory and decent night mode are cool. If there's a GB for inexpensive enough ones I might run them front and rear, just or the hell of it.

If they can be wired to auto-turn on with your ignition, could you not also set it up to switch on if your alarm gets activated? Or to an impact/vibration sensor that's set to be more sensitive than the main one for the alarm, for hit-and-runs etc?

It's honestly tempting to go absolutely nuts and get a high-end alarm and mount cameras everywhere after all the near misses I've had this summer, and some jerkoff kid breaking into my car and stealing my MP3 player (worst part is I'm pretty sure I know who did it but I have no proof :-( )

Not sure if it's exactly the same as the Autolismo one. The mount is different. The reviews say it can only record 2 mins, while in the BCM3 thread, it says the Autolismo V2 one can record 2,5,15min files.

When I drove the Tail of the Dragon in North Carolina I had a similar type camera mounted via suction cup to my car and it worked just fine. The Flip has a higher frame rate so I'd expect it to work aces.

Looks like the Contour HD is on sale for $150 at FutureShop and Best Buy right now. Is it a bad choice compared to the Autolismo one?

off topic, but because of your tip i got this camera for cheap. finally got a helmet cam for snowboarding. thanks man!

also, contour HDs work great inside the car. it has a wide field of view so when i jammed it on my passenger seat's head rest for a test drive, you can basically see the road AND the driver at the same time. really cool camera.

for car cam its crap. it does have wide angle, but doesn't stay on when connected to power, doesn't do cycle recording either.. however video quality is good, lowest setting, my 8 gb card would run out in 4 hours, (but batt last only 1-2 hours)

i did lot of research
and got the DOD GS300
it is small and record 1080p - no LCD screen but it is nice and small
records automatically when you turn key on
and stops when you turn key off
easy to install - long power wire goes to 12V plug

Pro:
small, good quality, 1080p - use micro SD card, easy to install, very good video qualitly, loop recording when memory card is full.

Con:
setting up needs a small monitor or tv in order to change the setting, night time recording is a little snowy if no enough lights.

8GB micro sd card records 2 hours of 1080p

here is a sample @ 480p reduce quality in order to upload

sample DOD GS300 video clip - YouTube

here is another no sound @ 720P better quality but remember to change the setting on youtube in order to watch 720p
GS300 sample 2 no sound - YouTube

it is not cheap cost me $275
there are cheaper models of course
but like anything in life, you want better quality, you have to pay more.

I am not sure about the wisdom of having GPS/data overlaid in the video, since the overlaid text is hard to remove and can be counted against you.. eg if you are hit, while you are slightly over the speed limit. Why risk it if you don't have to?

I think it is better to have velocity/position data recorded in a csv / txt file elsewhere.

With potential evidence and data, you always want to be able to selectively show what you need to prove your case; never show extraneous stuff.

Indeed. That video is private but I open it up for this thread

I've been watching a lot of russian car crash compilations lately. Apparently it's mandatory to have a dashcam if you get enough accidents. This along with the bike license will definetly make dealing with insurance a whole lot easier. Also would help with a lot of hit and runs.

There are ones where it'll record even if your car is off but only for 1.5 hr or so before it dies. It'll saved the recorded file before it dies.

I am currently looking at this one.

eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices (http://www.ebay.com/itm/120688542667?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649)

The one that you are looking on eBay is recording VGA
That is like web cam definition
It would not be very clear in my opinion
That is why I got gs300 is 1080p
You can lower the quality too
But why bother to record something that is not even clear
Easy way to try
Just setup your digital camera record video in VGA quality
And later play on your tv or computer
Then record 1080p and watch the difference
I just got 3 more of the gs300 for my relatives
They like it
It was cheaper when I bought more this time
$250 after shipping and duties

Highlander711
10-21-2011, 09:58 AM
cool that is cheap!
but i guess it all depend of quality and how size

the GS300 is an expensive unit for sure
i have been using mine almost a year and so far no problem
and same
can take micro sd cards up to 64GB
but nobody use that high as the 64GB SD cards are so expensive

i use 8GB and can record 2 hours 1080p
you just need the last 10 min of any clips anyways
and just copy it to your computer
as someone mention it before too
i can lower the quality so i can record longer hours like 720p to 4 hours
but why bother?
most of my trips are less than 1 hours anyways

spoon.ek9
10-21-2011, 10:04 AM
forgot to mention it's 30fps too. anyways, the reason some people need 64gb cards is to record while the car is parked during work hours. hit and runs are super common in cramped parking lots of asian malls.

If that the case I don't thing dash camera would work
You would be recording the front of your car only
How about your sides and back?
You will need to buy 4 camera for each side if you are using as security device
Or in case someone hit your car in the parkade

As for someone want to steal it
Well same as gps system
You have to protect them
But on the other hand
You need to buy a smaller size camera so people can't see it

i dont think that would work
depend of the wide angle of the camera
if a car parking next to your car scrape your fender
you might be able to record a corner or head light of that car
but you probably wont be able to record the license plate

also i dont think there are any camera that can record 8 hours straight
most likely to drain the car battery ?

their all HD , so its really clear even at night id say for a easy plug and play like this

and their only like 100 and 120 with shipping even tho they dont look as nice as the black box.

and it doesnt have to be opened to record, you could close the screen to save more space.
as long as you turn your ignition on it will start recording.
it will restart every 5minute mark. so you get little sections of recording. OR you could change setting to whenever long you like.

my dad also wants one for his truck and so does couple of my uncles. got a big family
so maybe we could group buy to split shipping or something..because their getting it by the end of the month so we can add on more for split cost. just a thought

it's basically better than nothing. if there's even a chance to catch someone who hits and runs your car, would you not want to try it out?

the camera has it's own battery and doesn't run solely on the car's battery. whether or not it lasts 8hrs+, i have no idea.

#of IR LEDs is just a gimmick. Your wind screen will absorb most of it, and it won't project far enough to illuminate things down range. You still need good driving lights to record at night.

kaka I noticed that everyone ignored your question on the other page too! But I'm pretty sure that everyone else just leaves theirs mounted when parked as the more expensive ones are small and well hidden. When I get the one from Diicii, I will be custom attaching it to my passport 8500 X50 radar detector and will be taking it off everytime I park as I normally do now :)

I usually just leave my mounted but it's so small that you can't really see it from the outside. Also I hate having to perfectly mount it everytime I start driving since a little bit of tilt (up, down, left, right) can mean a feet or so of the image not in the perfect position.

I just mount it behind the rearview mirror.. the cars I have, nearly all of them have the big rain sensors (which is a blessing because it makes tapping into 12V much easier).. so an added piece is not too obtrusive (besides BMW's mirrors are rather bulky to start off with).. besides since I do bolt mine down around the neck of the rear view mirror(not suction cup).. so it is covered by ICBC just in case.

I would be more worried about crossing the border (since I don't think you are supposed to be filming border crossings).. than petty theft. Especially border guards can randomly ruin your day base on their whim.

What's the point of a 32gb card to store 13 hrs. If you have an accident you should probably pull the data right away anyway right, let alone record for another 13 hrs.

Not sure if this helps, but these are recorded off my iPhone 2 using "Qik Video"
[/url]

can you loop videos with that software? as in you record over old videos automatically
wonder if there's a car dock out there when once you mount it the cam starts rolling automatically.

For those who are running cams, can you post some reviews or samples?

That D-TEG BX1500 is what I call a dash cam. Thing is so small and has GPS (albeit not THAT useful).

At 250 a pop though, it seems like a lot. How much did you end up paying !Tigger?

Nope, you open the app and hit record everytime you want to film. They get stored away in the app which takes up memory from your phone. You can delete any clips you wish from inside the app. To get it on to your computer, you open the app up and hit "Wifi access" and type in the given I.P address (usually your own) on the web browser and you click on which ones you like to download.

i recently bought the blackvue dr400g. it was quite expensive but i think it'll be useful in the long run. it has loop recording features, voice notification (tells you when recording starts, when parking mode starts, etc.), gps, motion detection, collision graph. you can turn the voice thing off too, some people might find it annoying.

it's very small and very very convenient. the accessories that came included were the mount to your windshield (it's very small, even if you leave the camera plugged in, people will not notice it when they walk by. 12volt adapter, i'd say it's about 6 - 8 feet long. 4 wire clip to hold the wire to the windshield (2 more would have been useful). camera and 16gb micro sd card, usb card reader, and a cd software. you can also download an app for android/iphone to view the videos on your phone (from the sd card or from your phone)

the mount and clips uses double tape for your windshield. the bad side about this is if you ever replace your windshield, you'd have to take it off. i'm trying to figure out how i can hard wire it without the clips.

the quality is 720p. you will capture license plate if the image is still. license plate appears blurry in motion but if anything ever happens you can just speak the plate outloud and have it recorded.

there is also a inverter you can buy if you ever plan on leaving it running while parked. it's called powermagic.

i'll post pictures of my set up and some recordings tomorrow.

Looks like it with just a different mount for it. I wonder how well this would work if it was mounted on the dash itself using Velcro or something? I can’t stand having some crap suction cupped to my windshield.

here is a picture of the mount on my windshield, uses double sided tape.

going to tuck the wires under the headliner and down the a pillar and door seal to the center compartment.

here is a video of me driving down clark at night. the camera records in 720p, so don't watch it in 1080p.

The time also looks incorrect because I don't think it gets that dark at 3:14pm and there's no traffic
