Here is my blackvue mounted on a 8th gen civic. Unfortunately the civic wipers wipe inside out so you get a huge dirt spot and water build up right behind the rear view mirror.
I mounted it slightly to the left to avoid the dirt in the video and also a picture of the fuse box. There was a ton of unused slots so I used a couple of THESE (http://www.picocanada.com/en/product/981.php) to hard wire in the power magic. One goes to ACC and the other goes to constant 12V.

I did not expect them to bounce off the bumper like that, that's for sure.
A came across a similar scenario in burnaby. I was driving on grange street and slowed down to let some skater kids across the pedestrian crossing between Sussex and McKay. After they started to cross (some were skating across) and were about half way passed my car I noticed a car, a chevy blazer, in the left lane not slowing down so I started to honk like crazy. The kids stopped just about when they were passed my car and the blazer started to slow down but only came to a stop after the crossing. They all kept thanking me as they crossed and I was glad I didn't witness something like the above video or worse. After that, the guy in the blazer was crawling away at a really slow speed. My guess would be he was in shock over what nearly happened. I would have been showing all this instead of describing it but I had the camera plugged in but forgot my memory card.
Would have been real ugly

Class 4 is good enough, I use class 4 on my dash cam as well as my gopro, just make sure it's a quality class 4 i.e., Sandisk or Kingston ones, I bought a patriot before and it just broke on me after 3 uses. on top of that there are some cards that are infamous for not writing as fast as the designated class.

Tested out my GoPro Hero2 tonight as a dashcam. I must say, the night vision on that thing absolutely sucks balls. Pretty sure I'd be better off mounting my Galaxy S to the windshield and using that as a night time camera. Oh well. It's just for insurance purposes in case someone blows through a stop sign or a red light. Even though it can't pick up licence plate numbers in the dark (faaaaar too much glare and waaaaay too much gain to boost the video), at least it'll show the basics as to what happened in case of an event.

Gopro2 is a terrible dash cam. Used it for a week. The battery doesn't last longer then 2 hours, the sound is aweful because of the case. No loop record. And it's three times as expensive as a basic dash camera. It's a great camera for other uses but it's not quality for a dash cam. The files are holy shit humongous too.

I never intended to use my Hero2 as a dash cam, but it simply happened over this weekend. The footage isn't that great (see my video above). If you get the open case, you can plug your camera in so it'll record for however long your SD card can handle. As for the file size, it's (more or less) a proper video camera shooting at full resolution. Of course they're gonna be big files... :p

Same thing happened to me a couple of years ago. Kid with an N in a black truck almost ran over a grandpa and a grandson crossing at a cross walk even though I had stopped and left lots of room for the other drivers to see that there were people crossing.
He flew by me and I honked like mad as and luckily the driver saw them just in time and stopped. I was actually in shock afterwards for a few hours even though it was something that "almost" happened. Thank god it didn't.

I took some videos from the memory card and a 3 minute file was huge at about 450mb. I converted the video to another format to make it smaller and faster to upload but it degraded the quality so I wanted to upload the original files. I tried uploading it to youtube and it would have taken 2-3 hours but my laptop and/or browser kept crashing so I gaved up uploading it. The daytime video is great but not as good as the BlackVue of course. Night video is crap :agree:.
I will change the settings to record each file to 1 minute and probably in medium resolution so each file is smaller and will post back here with some videos hopefully.

i don't think its the back car's fault. why? because when the front car changed lane it was an open lane which means that cars are allowed to be in it. the back car had every right to be driving in the lane when the front car rammed into him.
changing over the solid line wasn't the cause of the accident.

I think it would be 50/50 as well. The front van is not expecting another vehicle to be there when it changed lane because of the solid line. So the van that changed lanes in the solid did cause the accident cause its not supposed to be in that lane yet along with the front driver for not shoulder checking.

I think it'll be 75%+ on the front car. Even if the car wasn't supposed to be there, it doesn't mean you don't need to check the spot.
For example, if you're parked a car length from the corner of an intersection, and there is a guy parked behind you, illegally, right on the corner of the intersection, if you back up and hit him, it's your fault, even though it's illegal for him to have been there in the first place.

What about the left hand turning lanes ? Some of them have yellow paint before the lane and people usually just cut through those areas instead of waiting till it opens up. Whos at fault if I hit the guy who cut through the yellow ?
Example of the lanes I was talking about.

My guess is it'll be 100% the guy who was changing lanes. IIRC from Young Driver's (lo those years ago), a solid white is pretty much the worst one to cross in terms of legality and liability.

TOPEC, your post went through but was deleted.
To be clear, in a thread as busy as this one there is no way to be certain who is and is not connected to vendors and/or selling things on their own. As such, there is to be no linking to wholesalers or locals other than sponsors or anyone saying "hey guys, I'm organizing a GB, PM me!"
If you are interested in purchasing one and would like good pricing, feel free to contact our sponsors Soundsgood or Overseas Auto; I'm sure if enough people were interested something could be arranged that is beneficial for all.
Please understand I am not trying to be an asshole or a douchecunt, but I must wield the double-edged sword of helping promote the sponsors and stopping people from profiting from RS without contributing to the site in return.

Just spotted the blackvue selling at a new auto store "ace auto" at crystal mall. Don't know how much, but these things have really come down in price on eBay! No groupbuy and it's $180 USD now. On a side note, I bought the imitation version for my dad called the "blackview" and it's pretty decent at less than 1/3 the price. It's funny that the cheaper version comes with a LCD display screen.

yeah, me too, but it's like you're getting more for your money! Well, minus the picture quality... imitation one is "decent" but can't compare it to blackvue
I might bite the bullet and go with the Blackvue now that the prices have dropped. I was hoping something similar would come out, but it looks like nothing beats the night time recording quality of the Blackview **tight, blue, shiny dress** If I had a Blackview back then, you know I'd upload it on RS.
I still hear of people having problems with the Blackvue. I guess it's hit and miss like everything else out there. I guess I'll request older firmware and see how it goes.

Haven't run into any issues with mine yet, it's still on the old firmware too. But I have been thinking of making a shield of some sort for it; there's some sheet metal in the garage still, so maybe that and a bit of white spray paint will do.
Though honestly, you need some good ol' sun on the unit to overheat it. Sun showing up in Vancouver? Blasphemy.

I was skimming through a monster Blackvue thread on RFD, and read about some overheating issues. The Blackvue does get warm under normal operation. Typically, it seemed like an issue with summer heat, and the parking mode, since it keeps the camera powered.

No it wont increase the chance of overheating, if you use the correct gauge wire.. it is more likely due to TO weather pushing it pass the thermo envelope.
From the video, it looks like the CCD is delaminating more than anything. No firmware will be able to fix that.

Heating issue is normal for Dr400. Please don't use your hands to touch Dr400 after a long time trip driving. The temprature might be 60-70.Not a big deal of that. That's normal.
And also Blackvue new model DR380 solved heating issue. The only difference between dr380 and dr 400 is the color, and dr380 got 720p HD. Dr400 is 1080 Full HD. Dr 380 is one kind of stealthy black color.

There is no definite answer as of yet imo(the specs does say operating temp is -20 to +60 degrees celsius), its just an assumption I have with regard to continuous power and not using any diodes and i doubt that ppl that did their own installs use the right gauge wire either. So I just think hardwiring using something like a power magic module will act as a regulator.
Like on redflag's forum almost all hardwire using their dome lights, and have overheating issues. I could be wrong but havent heard much of a issue with those who hardwire with power magic.
I guess what I am interested in is the outcome of hardwire with power magic and 400 model.

First, this kind of "cheap" wiring cameras might stop working under high temprature such as 30 °C. It is important that low quality camera will miss recording. So it might miss several seconds among clips. This kind of camera is just useless.
Second, no warranty. Why would you like to spend 30 dollars on a low quality one without warranty?

One option you have is to modify the cup to take double sided tape and simply stick it on your windshield. The other is to find a higher quality suction cup online (not sure where you'd find one, sorry).
I just hardwire another dash camera on my rear windshield. I call it BlackvuePRO

Many people don't need high definition footage. They just want a video camera that records what happens. ICBC will rule in your favour (or someone else's) provided they can see what happened. It doesn't matter if you're able to make out if the person driving has blue or brown eyes.
Besides, using the screen is illegal in BC, so it doesn't really matter if it works or not. :p

That's exactly what I want to show you guys. I used dr400 and dr380 both are under cooling condition. After about 1 hr driving. DR380 is obviously not as hot as dr400 even though dr380 is in black color. After 1 hour driving, the temprature between two models are huge different. So this means dr380 does improve the heating issue.
I want prove you guys more about dr380. And I will write a thread about dr380 later tonight.Unfortunately, I don't have a temprature gauge. Does anyone got temprature gauge I could borrow for 1 time? Thanks.

It depends on people's different thinking.
Yes, using the screen dash camera while driving is illegal.
How about a hit and run situation? If your dash camera didn't capture a clear license plate, how could ICBC waive your deductible? That's a point.
One RCMP told me that if you present a blurry video which got a clear criminal face or license plate, then the non-HD video is useless. That's the official RCMP told me in person.

because it was only $35 shipped to my door to play around with. at that price i'm fine with no warranty. before i know if i really want something high end i usually buy something lower end to see if i really like it to avoid buyer's remorse on a high end item. i did the same with my 1st set of golf clubs.

So if the blackvue 400 dies under this over heating issue, will warranty be covered and how long is it for?
Like Glow, I bought an el cheapo dash cam from China. Took a while to get it, but it was well worth the money. Starts up immediately and the screen confirms the camera is aimed properly. As I'm about to drive off, I flip the screen closed not having to worry if the camera is aimed properly. In fact, I can tell if the camera is aimed properly by just looking at the device. The media being SD Card format is also a bonus - much easier to handle than the micro SD card the BlackVue uses. As of this week, I have a BlackVue. The BlackVue has higher definition and records well at night time, however, it is a bear during dusk. Last evening, I had uber problems with the BlackVue adjusting to shadows caused by the sun being low on the horizon.
I purchased my BlackVue via eBay before I found out the BlackVue was sold by a couple of RS sponsors. If I had known, I would have supported an RS sponsor.
Anyway, the BV I got came with Korean language installed. Seller sent me English update and all is well. Had a few issues with it, but figured out how to do a proper upgrade/conversion. Quite simple, now that I know what needs to be done.
I also purchased an extra set of accessories for the BlackVue - an extra mount and an extra adapter. Going from one vehicle to another is a snap.
Honestly, there is nothing wrong with getting the cheaper dashcams. Anyone who tries to convince you otherwise needs to step back and smell the roses. I have both the cheaper variety and the BlackVue.
Just putting an unbiased opinion out there. It bothers me a bit when sales pitch takes over a thread meant to inform people.
If any of you need help, I'll try my best............
Also, if you need one of these dashcams or any other electrical device installed in your vehicle, you can always contact any of the RS sponsors, like Soundsgood, Rise, etc. They know their shit and can get it done right - quality installs by qualified people using proper supplies.

actually samsung 16gb is class 6. It is not that good. Go to your removable disc and find a Record folder. Then delete all the files. You don't really need to format the sd disc everytime because it will change your time and other settings. You can format the disc once every one month.
2. Go to NCIX get a 32 GB samsung class 10 or 32GB Patriot Class 10. I highly recommend 32GB samsung class 10 card at this time. Your issue will be solved.

Probably an SD card issue. Try swapping in a different card from another company, ideally Sandisk, Lexar or Patriot. You only need a minimum of Class 6 for 1080p video, so if you can't find a Class 8 or 10 for relatively cheap, don't worry about it. My professional-grade film camera doesn't even need a Class 10 card to film in 1080/60p mode.
However, if you keep having issues, your unit is probably pooched. If you bought it locally, I'd recommend you warranty it.
for some reason, my blackvue doesnt auto rewite old videos, when it gets near full, i hear "Please Check SD Card"
According to info from other sites, it is most likely the card. It sounds like it's a fairly common problem. They recommend backing up your files then reformatting the card. There's some good info about the "Please Check SD Card" on Redflag Deals. Just do a search. I waded through all the pages and like most places, there's a lot of misinformation along with some good shit.
I found this web site recently and it is well written. Pretty refreshing to see well written shit on the Internet for a change. Car Cam Central | Your source for car camera news, reviews & videos! (http://www.carcamcentral.com/)
BTW, I use a 32 gb class 10 Adata micro SD card that I purchased from NCIX. Got it for $25.99, plus tax. I did a full format using Pittasoft's recommended method and no problems so far. Mind you, I've only had the thing for a few days, LOL.

Nope, event recording is on when the g sensor is on. Do not adjust the sensitivity too low.

Samsung 16GB sucks. Samsung 16GB is class 6. Compatibility is not as good as Samsung 32GB class 10. Pittasoft 16GB is a different story. I sold almost about 100 piece now. Nothing happened to a stock pittasoft 16GB. Did you use samsung 16gb sd for your cell or camera as well, meowmeow? You can send it to the factory to exchange another one tho.But the shipping is kind of killing you. So you can go to NCIX get a class 10 Patriot 32GB. It is only 20 dollars.

From all the research I did before I bought the BlackVue some two months ago, a couple of things were quite clear, as far as problem solving the card issue was concerned.
Decent quality SD card is a must. Class 10 recommended.
Format the card using recommended method.

Most reputable card manufacturers format their cards properly, but why take a chance?
Install latest firmware update.
BTW, my BV came with a Pittasoft 16gb class 10 card. I purchased an Aldata 32gb card from NCIX and have not had a single issue with it. I backup and delete the "record" files almost on a daily basis and have yet to reformat. I use my Macbook Pro - pop the card into the express card slot (21 in 1 Sonnet card reader).

I picked up a Lexar 32GB card and it actually does write 10mb/s Gonna start using it tomorrow. Been waiting for a good brand one for some time now. Most of the other brand doesn't write close to what it is rated at. Class number just means what it is capable of, but it doesn't mean write speed. We all know read speed is faster than write speed. The Pitasoft one I benched write at 7mb/s.

Well when i first got my card everything was fine..then eventually i started seeing that some footage would not save (when i opened it up on my computer) it showed a picture of a sd card but like cut in half , in color red. Anyways...fast forward a bit and it seemed to have gone back to normal until today when i took the card out from the dash cam, put it into the adapter and plugged it into my computer when it showed "format card in order to continue" so i tried formatting it but everytime i get an error which says it cant format..so now i cant look at the footage on my computer..any ideas? = /

I'm sure I have to make way for a pedestrian but a cyclist is a vehicle that must obey the road signs. I go by this every day and the only day I see them actually stop is when a cop is standing by the corner. One time I went through that corner and a cyclist jammed on the front brake so hard he almost did a front flip, would had been cool if he went all the way around.

hi guys
i noticed some of you guys are using dash cameras with speed recording.
arent you worry that if something happend, you need to present the video but at the same time shows that you are speeding?
that is the reason why i bought the DOD GS300 instead of the GS600
first is was cheaper and small NO LCD display.

only difference GPS tracking and speed recording
so far i like it
only downside is night recording is a little snowy

When I hard wired my BlackVue, I couldn't bring myself to cut the cigarette plug, so I bought a female cigarette end at RP Electronics for like $1.50 ish. I got the kind you solder your own wires to. You can purchase ones with wires already on, but it will cost you more (frugal Asian here). This also eliminated having to deal with the really thin wires of the BlackVue. On top of that, I have the BlackVue connected to my Nav screen. Plus, with the extra mount and plug I bought separately, I move the BlackVue from one vehicle to the other - it's a snap. Gotta love the two black alignment dots on the BlackVue, LOL. Saved me from having to make my own marks.

I'm guessing he means the screw holes
No, there are two silk screened black dots that line up with the top and bottom edges of the holder. On my truck, since the windshield angle is not sharp, the two dots line up nicely. My commuter car, on the other hand, has uber sharp windshield angle, so I have to twist the BlackVue until the bottom dot disapears under the bottom edge of the holder and then some.
I didn't know about the black dots until one day I got pretty frustrated having to look at Nav to align the BV. I actually had a sharpie marking pen out at the time and was about to draw in my own dots, LOL.

There's probably an easy way to post-process the video. The location of the speed is static, and blurring that out seems like a basic function of decent editing software.
^ But if ICBC ask that blurry spot, how can you answer that?

Typically cropping footage just involves using your video editing program to zoom into the clip and move it around, allowing you to take out bits around the edge that you don't want.

Even if you crop the speed out, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to determine the speed you're going based on a distance vs time calculation, if they really wanted to know.

just to experiment with... and to show people 'you get what you pay for'.. here's a cheap $40 ebay dashcam...removed sound...it records at standard 640x480 VGA and obviously the lens isn't wide enough. Night time recording sucks but still somewhat functional..daytime seems ok.
2GB SDcard yielded approx 44mins at this resolution with sound. it was set for 'night mode' for first half of video and switched to 'day mode' around when I hit the oak st bridge.
QUESTION I have is the 'optical frequency'? i.e. 50hz or 60hz? does it really make a difference?
The only 'funny' event was the RAV4 at 6:05 trying to merge in front of the big 18 wheeler and not being able to do so.
next one I get will be a much higher res/wider angle...still researching...

Just picked up a sandisk 32gb class 10 microSD card for 30 bucks plus tax at Costco.
Gonna see how reliable it is.

I see a lot of footage (including mine) has significant glare from the dashboard...anyone try using some sort of polarizer to get rid of it?
The finevu had a screw-on CP filter...the blackvues dont apparently. All I could find online was this stuff: Polarizer,Linear Polarizer Film (http://www.3dlens.com/shop/polarizer.php)
Not sure if you'd stick it on the lens, or the window in front of the lens.
Thoughts?
^Polarizer is not good for the night tho. I have the finevu with the polarizer on my car. But it is not that helpful.:concentrate:

Dash cam, car black box, accident recorder, etc.
Under $50, go for ebay ones (DVR-027, etc.) or try the night market. If you want higher quality cameras (gps, accelerometer, HD video) look to our sponsors. Popular ones are the DR400G, DR380G, and the FineVu branded ones (not sure about models).
