I leave it in the car even though it's not hardwired. My dashcam is too difficult to take out, you have to take off the mount before unscrewing the dashcam off.

Anyway
I'll be buying dashcams as christmas gifts...or hoping too anyway time is running out

have any of you heard of Lukas? Full HD (http://lukasstore.com/full-hd.html)
http://anton.shevchuk.name/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Lukas_LK-7900_Ace.jpg
they seem nice and small, which is one of my concerns i dont want to be giving out cams which seem too large for the windshield
how about the Thinkware products that are sold at FS et al? Thinkware F550 Full HD Dashcam With GPS (F550) : Back Up Cameras & Dash Cams - Future Shop (http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/product/thinkware-thinkware-f550-full-hd-dashcam-with-gps-f550-f550/10297757.aspx)

I have lukas.. works fine. Read them up at Dashcamtalk. If you don't get ones with Sony CMOS, they will be ones made by Samsung.
If you give away dashcams.. help the owners put in the system too.

Don't get the thinkware stuff. Although the technology is there - it's really great hardwired. The quality lacks a ton, you can barely read the license plate of the car next to you.

Personlly, I don't really like Lukas cameras. The video quality for the two cameras that I've tested before were both horrible (for it's price), the LK7300 and LK7900. I don't know if they've stepped up their game now with their newer cams, but I would rather not take the risk and spend the same amount of money and get a Blackvue or Finevu.

Anyone have experience getting a G1W/G1WH locally?
a site called www.whatcams.ca has them, but i'd feel better about going to a sponsor or shop where people have had experience.
blackboxmycar.com is local. They carry all kinds of dashcams. Dude's name is Alex. He is located in south Van.
Yeah Alex is a good guy. Highly recommend him.
Whatcams is also run by a fellow RS member so can't go wrong with them either.

Question for those running a dashcam with power magic pro.
Is your dash cam running >8 hours a day due to you being parked outdoors during your regular work/school hours? If so, did you find your car battery life to be much shorter than usual?

If you drive your car everyday, the car battery will charge and you should be okay. My friend sometimes doesn't drive his car for a week, dashcam with pmp turned off and he car wouldn't even start. Mind you his car is only one year old.

I drive my car everyday without running a power magic pro and haven't had issues with my battery being discharged. Took about a few days for it to drain when I parked my MR2 last winter

Got a Garmin Dash Cam 20 from my parents for my birthday last week, but I wasn't sure if I wanted GPS/speed sensor capability. Dad took it back, bought a Dash Cam 10 (exact same camera but without GPS/speed sensor) and I'm installing the updates and stuff right now. Reviews on this thing are pretty favourable, and I'm excited to see what it'll catch. I'll probably need a larger microSD card though, don't think 4GB will cut it.

It's like having an extra battery in the car. It charges up while you drive and your dashcam runs off of it, so you never have to worry about your car battery going dead while parked. I have both front and rear dashcams running off this battery.

The Powermagic does eventually fail, as I found out the hard way.
It went strong for 3 years, then boom. Dead battery.
Got a new one, and it's been fine for the past 6 months.
I'm not calling you a liar, but I don't know how it would fuck up your battery. The worse it could do is drain it a few times while you figure out what's going on, but draining the battery dead a few times shouldn't fuck it up (most of the time anyway, and if it did, i'd blame the battery.)

As with any electronic items, wear and tear. Especially if it's left on running for extended periods of time, the longevity won't last long if anything.
Mines ran fine for 1.5 years and then I noticed my dashcam stopped recording in parking mode, changed out the dashcam and works fine again.
In terms of messing up the car battery, not sure how it contributed because the dashcam is a low-voltage device...I ain't no electronics expert, maybe I'm wrong =/

My car was only a couple months old when I installed my Blackvue DRW550 with Power Magic Pro. Less than a year later my battery was no longer holding a charge, I ended up getting it warrantied through the dealer. The Power Magic Pro is supposed to prevent the battery from being drained and it failed miserably.
This is the reason why I went with an external battery and not a device like a Power Magic Pro that simply shuts off power to the dashcam when the battery's voltage goes below a certain value.

A PMP only has 11.8, and 12v settings, so at our normal temps we see in Vancouver, it'll discharge your battery down to 50%-25% before cutting off the camera.
I have a Lukas 290, and I've got it set to 12.4v just to be safe.

Aside from the Power Magic Pro completely draining my battery, my Blackvue camera has also messed up two Micro SD cards (the 16gb that it came with and a 32gb Kingston) to the point where it keeps repeating "Initializing the SD Card, please do not turn off the power" and my computer no longer recognizes them when plugged in.
No issues with the actual camera though but I do agree at this price point it should be a lot more reliable.

So, after a couple of close encounters the past few days, I've decided to buy yet another dashcam after my last one broke a a couple months ago. Waaaay too many different options out there, especially on eBay, so I'm looking to buy locally (well, Kamloops local... not Vancouver local). Best Buy has a few interesting options, but one that stood out to me was the Thinkware F750 dual channel.

Any thoughts on this? I know someone mentioned earlier in this thread (last year, I believe) that Thinkware isn't quite on par with the picture quality, but viewing video reviews seem to show pretty decent footage.
Worth the price for a dual camera system? Only real downside I can see from this is that it uses a proprietary power cord instead of the usual mini-USB most other units use, so that means I have to pull my current hardwiring out and replace it.

I was looking for a new dash cam recently too and seeing how these things only last 2-3 years max and are considered disposable, I decided to not spend too much from now on.
Price <$80CAD, form factor, size, and video quality are my main criteria in that order. I don't like the ones that hangs from the windshield. I ended up choosing the A118 and bought it from Aliexpress for $72CAD.

That looks pretty expensive for a dash cam, the video quality had better be mind blowingly good for that price IMO. Even then I'd rather buy a cheaper one and not worry about replacing it every few years.

I have this one as well, except I went with the capacitor version for a little more money. The form factor is nice, as it's relatively small, yet still has a display screen.
The video quality during the day is fine, but I've found that the nighttime quality is just "meh."

Most people don't have a rear camera but I'd recommend one. A couple of months back a Ford Escape rolled into me at a red light in Vancouver. I pulled over and the lady turned into a side street and took off. I saved the footage from my camera immediately and got the plates from it.
After calling the cops, the RCMP pulled her over in North Vancouver within minutes. They said they couldn't see any damage on her Escape and she denied rolling into me so they had to let her go. A couple days later ICBC contacted her and again she denied hitting me.
I sent the footage to the officer taking my case and ICBC, she finally admitted to hitting me but claims I ran from the scene instead lol. If that was the case I don't think I would've called the police and ICBC.
Anyways she ended up getting a ticket for failure to stop and I didn't have to pay my deductible to fix my bumper. Without the rear camera I would've been out $300 for the deductible.

Single camera is more cost efficient than dual cameras (less BS to worry about). I retire my older camera cameras and use them at the back.
Right now I think cameras with the Ambarella A7LA70 chip are the best. However the A12 processor is supposedly to be out soon and will feature a die shrink. It apparently supports bluetooth for file transfer.
Mini0806 or Dome are safe bet.. Lomac if you worried about bunk / return shipping.. get your camera from and handled by Amazon.ca.. if the camera doesn't work well, just mail it back it is free and you get refund once the post office scan the bar code.
Dashcamtalk is a good resource.

It really depends on the car you drive and how you drive it.. there are surges every time you turn on your car etc. The IC is off the shelf, so you can try to replace that.
However what do you expect a $20 piece of electronic to do? For the 1.5 years it is on 24/7.

For $50 I'd want it to actually function properly. Pittasoft's products are positioned at an above average price point and I expect the quality to reflect that.
In 1.5 years it has left me stranded once because allowed my battery to fully drain instead of shutting off the camera like it is supposed to do. I only leave it on when I'm parked somewhere suspect or prone to getting hit (ex. Aberdeen)

Unless you physically uplug it.. every time you start the car, the surges still go through the electronics. There is just no ground.
Aberdeen)

When I installed my pmp I made sure to ground it to the chassis. So if properly installed it should last, but i can't see pmp last long because of quality issues like blackvue camera are not built to last for what you pay.

With all these cheap cameras flooding the market I have no idea why anyone would pay 300+ for a blackvue.
I have had my blackvue DR500 with PMP for 2 years now, granted it still records nicely and the picture quality is still good. But the camera itself had the internal battery (or capacitor) fry after about a year, so now it doesn't properly record time stamps and stuff. For a camera which costed me more than quadruple other offerings, I expected more.
The truth is these camera's are almost disposable, they sit in your car running anywhere from 12-24 hours a day, during summer they get completely destroyed by the burning hot sunshine, etc.
My suggestion would be to look around and just snag any ~$100 camera with good reviews. Spending 300 or 400 bucks on a blackvue or finevu is just idiotic. This coming from someone who did exactly that.

Agreed. If you don't have a camera now, get a decent one for $100 or so. In the next 2-3yrs or so, get another $100 one which should be better, put the first on in the back and use it as a rear camera. Rinse and repeat.

I have that exact camera. First I bought 1 and I liked it so much I bought 2 more a week later. Everyone keeps saying get the g1w but the A118 uses the same sensors and chip so it is very similar in video quality. It just depends on what form factor you prefer. A camera that's more discreet or one that hangs down from the windshield.

I actually prefer the A118 just because it is small and will not be in the way when i have it up on my windshield. The g1w is pretty ugly looking in my opinion. it must have a bigger screen. but that's useless to me. i would rather get a camera which is small and discreet.

I have the A118 / B40 as well, as I also like the small form factor.
I have it set so my rearview mirror mostly blocks the screen (though you can turn off the LCD screen). The dash cam isn't too obvious from the outside of your car, but of course this depends on the angle at which someone is looking at your windshield.

If this camera was for me I would've just bought something cheaper like a G1W off Amazon. I don't intend on spending a dime at Blackboxmycar after what happened in 2013 with warranty issues and just how the company got started.
From RFD: DASH CAM: Blackvue DR500GW-HD|*HACKED*|Wifi for Live view/Downloading videos to phone - Page 3 - RedFlagDeals.com Forums (http://forums.redflagdeals.com/dash-cam-blackvue-dr500gw-hd-hacked-wifi-live-view-downloading-videos-phone-1290337/3/)
Here's what happened...
I organized a group buy of the original Blackvue direct from the manufacturer. I dealt with their manager of overseas sales and told him up front what I was doing. He gave me a price, and I sold to RFDers at my cost. They also made me an authorized dealer for their cams.
After my group buy, I was contacted by a guy in BC asking for advice on how to import the cams cheaply. I helped him out, and he started a company called BlackBoxMyCar (BBMC). He became an authorized dealer for the Blackvue, and began selling the cam for profit.
A few months after my group buy was done and all the cams were distributed, the manufacturer sent an email to all authorized dealers stating that they had implemented a minimum selling price for their cams.
In the fall, I was asked by many people to run a second group buy, so I made a few posts here on RFD stating that I was thinking about it.
When BBMC saw that I was possibly going to run another group buy, they got upset because they felt it would make it harder for them to sell their cams. They reported me to the manufacturer and said that I was breaking their minimum selling price rules, even though I didn't even have any cams to sell.
The manufacturer believed BBMC because they speak Korean and I don't. They shut me down as an authorized dealer, refused to ship me additional cams, and voided the remaining 3 months of warranty that was left on the cams that I imported in my first group buy.
I've contacted Best Buy and I'm just waiting to hear back about whether or not the PMP is actually included or if it's a typo on their website.

You will pretty much always need hardwiring to get parking mode, some cameras have internal batteries and can record without constant power but it's for an hour tops and they tend to be pretty unreliable. If you have a cigarette jack that puts out constant power that could work as well though. My Fiesta didn't start a few weeks back because I have a constant cigarette jack and left my usb charger plugged in :okay:

Whoa~ Gotta say I'm a little surprised. A lot of the newer cars have 12V jacks that automatically switch off when ignition is turned off -- mine is like that, and I don't particularly enjoy this "feature" since I'd much rather have the choice to leave something plugged in or not -- instead of having it forced upon me.
In relation to a dashcam, this effectively means your dashcam may or may not be able to draw power from the 12V jack.

The Blackvue App and the Wifi connectivity on these cameras suck. Like MTV Cribs mentioned, it's great for adjusting the camera and that's about it. If I want to look at or save my footage I just take the micro sd card out and pop it into my computer.

I like the Dome G98C camera (https://www.google.com/search?q=dome+g98c+camera&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8) It is under $80 but has a metal body, so it cools much better than other cameras. For park mode, just add a USB external battery pack.. will last much longer than those built in ones anyways.
Most multi channels cannot handle the resolution the A7 can get anyways for 170 degree view.. so if you want 2 channels it is cheap enough to just get 2.

Not sure if I would recommend going with the expensive dash cams. From reading around, it seems like cameras tend to fog up after roughly 1.5 years regardless of manufacturer.
Cleaning the lens may be an option but it didn't make a difference in my case (midrange dash camera). The camera still works like it is supposed to (identify make, model and color) but I can't read plates like when it was new due to my perma-fogged lens.
The premium price seems to be more for a smaller form factor, 2 channel setup and/or wifi viewing (again to reduce form factor by eliminating the screen)

Have you seen BBMC wire them to the airbag fuses personally? I doubt the guys there would do such a thing and I can vouch for everyone working there. lol where did you hear that? the airbag fuses are usually in the same place as the fuses for the rest of the car for most Jap/American vehicles. I know for W205 C Class (video) (http://bit.ly/1Prhgch) there is a front fuse box that has the airbag fuses in it but if you watch Alex's videos he specifically uses the rear fuse box on that car even though it's the furthest away from the front camera. That being said BBMC outsources most installs nowadays.
Hardwire really isn't that hard (for lack of a better word) I did one on an FRS last weekend, takes all of 7 minutes to get the power cable in. If you guys need a hand give me a PM, with most JDM cars it's usually pretty easy.

I contacted an ad for a brand new Blackvue DR650 (2-channel) on Craigslist and the guy named Sean responded and indicated his works as a customer representative for Blackboxmycar and that the price for the dashcam is $425.
The price they list on their website is for $504; however, a buddy of mine bought the same dashcam from Sean for $400 cash in person meetup a week prior. I was all puzzled with the different pricing and I told my friend to ask Sean to see if he can get it for $400. Sean declined he ever met my friend for the $400 in person cash deal and that he couldn't do $400, which makes no sense as it was only a week ago, can't imagine someone forgetting that quickly.
Last night I contacted Blackboxmycar directly via email to ask about their inconsistent pricing structure. They refused to response and I feel that is the way they handle negativity and that is to ignore and pretend they never knew of the issue.

I am "Sean" and I work as a sales representative (NOT Customer representative) for multiple dashcam companies. I clearly mention in all my emails that I work with multiple companies, and that I DO NOT work solely with blackboxmycar, so please do not drag them into this. I have never sold a blackvue dr650gw-2ch for $400. I include invoices with every sale I make so you should probably ask your friend to check his invoice for two things: What price is listed on the invoice? What COMPANY is listed on the invoice?
As for your email to blackboxmycar last night, you should give them up to 24 hours to reply. You can't expect a response so quickly... I have already spoken to Alex on this matter and he should be sending you a response before the business day ends.
Edit: Also, my prices can fluctuate every day depending on whether there is a sale or not with the companies I work with. If I sell a dashcam for $425 one week, that doesn't mean that I can get you the same price the next week. Just like any retail store.
Edit 2: If there is anything else you want me to clarify, or want to discuss. I will gladly do so through PM. I don't want to bring any negative attention towards the companies I work for online, as this is not their fault.
This is a pretty good deal. Basically will get driving and parking recording all in one package under $200 (including tax).

I'm trying to stick under $100 for each single (not including SD card), I don't need wifi or any fancy brand names as I've seen lots of people have issues with Blackvues and I don't want to deal with BBMC since I've heard some not so great things, I just want good video quality that'll last a couple years. It can hit 50+ degrees in the car here in the summer so I don't expect anything I pick to have a very long life.
sometimes, there will be a hot chick (like yesterday) that you know had passed in front of your car so you can quickly see a repeat if you have a wifi dashcam. :troll:
i dont have a wifi dashcam so lost a vid of a pretty chick at safeway
Last night I contacted Blackboxmycar directly via email to ask about their inconsistent pricing structure. They refused to response and I feel that is the way they handle negativity and that is to ignore and pretend they never knew of the issue.
I have purchased at least half a dozen various dash cams from Alex at blackboxmycar.com over a span of two or so years. He is very professional and is really easy to deal with. If an issue comes up, he goes out of his way to remedy the situation.
I've met up with him at odd hours and he has always been available (within reason). I think you're starting off on the wrong foot here.
I kind of understand what's happening here. Just saying Alex is a pretty good guy. As mentioned by Sean, I think this is a misunderstanding and blackboxmycar.com should not be dragged into this.

True, but you can still save the vid just like any other one with the little double triangle button.

Any dashcam recommended for basic recording (don't need WiFi, GPS, etc.) and that's reliable (ie. leave it on 365 days a year regardless hot or cold)?
I kind of regret going cheap and picking up a G1W-C from Aliexpress and it's basically not working properly.
I know (or read) that some of the high end dashcam (ie Blackvue) used to have problem with the heat in the summer, is that still the case?

Check out the Blackvue from BB a couple of posts above yours. Has the powermagic for recording while car is off, and its a cheaper model because it lacks the stuff you dont even want. Sounds like a good fit. And I think only the original Dr400 had horrible overheating problems(im currently using that one, which I got during the first group buy here), but the new ones should be much better(or so ive read).

Those of you with the DR650 2CH, how are you guys exporting video? If I use the blackvue program to export the video, I gotta do one at a time (cant do both front and rear) and the audio cuts out like 3 seconds into the clip. Weird part is the audio is fine when playing back on the blackvue viewer on PC. Same thing when dragging file out from the sd card, audio is only limited to a couple seconds before going silent on both channels.
Any easier way to do this along with making a vid with both front and rear in the video?
Edit: Nevermind it seems to be my Vegas Pro thats cutting audio out, but only for blackvue clips. I dont get it :okay:

If I want to show front and rear I use premiere pro, no problem with Audio
For Playback I just use VLC, I'm running 128GB and both my computer and blackvue viewer will lag a fair bit cause there's thousands of files.

Andy Rubin plans Gmail model for AI-teaching dashcam - SlashGear (http://www.slashgear.com/andy-rubin-plans-gmail-model-for-ai-teaching-dashcam-09426159/)
Android creator and former Google exec Andy Rubin wants to give you a dashboard camera, but you have to agree to help him build an Artificial Intelligence in return. Speculation about the serial inventor's current project have escalated in the months since he left Google and established Playground, a collaborative incubator for next-generation technologies, and now Rubin is giving a hint of what's to come.
Although a dashcam might not seem like a typically Rubin-style moonshot, it's exactly how he plans to distribute it as well as capitalize on the data it collects that makes the project intriguing.
Speaking to Wired, Rubin confirmed that he and the group at the Playground intend to give the unnamed dashcam away. In return, however, users will be expected to feed the data the car camera records into Playground's cloud.
One possible use for that data is building a visual map of the world, in real-time, by using every car equipped with the hardware as a roving probe. It's an early step in Rubin's scheme to put sensors into as many places as possible, and then use the gush of information they generate to teach an evolving AI.

Don't think my DR550GW has that feature. Not really an issue though, memory cards are cheap, so buying a 34 or 64gig isn't such a big deal these days.

just rather be able to save the current clip and protect it, rather than pulling out the card later and skimping thru hundreds of clips looking for one specific thing or maybe it's not even there and its overwritten.

Everything is timestamped. Pretty easy to find a clip you want, if you know the time it occurred. Not too difficult to note or remember a time, especially if it's something important. If it is important, not sure how you would find it's been overwritten...a 32gb card in my 550 will last for 7 hours of video before it starts recording over. That is a lot of driving, and a whole lot of "parked at the airport".

I think you guys are missing the point lol. It's not about whether he can/can't find it. It's just more convenient to have a save button so you know exactly when it happened without needing to remember a time (which you'll probably forget if you're out all day).
Speaking of which, I am actually also looking to change my camera and that feature is something I' looking for. From what I know, Blackvues do not have it. I was told that Thinkware and BlackSys dashcams have the feature. Some FineVu cameras have the feature as well.

I use mine as a video surveillance system when I'm parked at home. I'm currently using the Matego MG800 from Autolismo.
http://autolismo.com/images/album/other_mg800_3.jpg
The motion detection range and sensitivity is pretty good (3-4 car lengths ahead), but wondering if there was something better. Also since the camera is on the passenger side of the mirror, I find it's able to detect motion on the passenger side very well, but not so much on the driver side.

You can Youtube how to change the battery, batteries are available on ebay. Had the CR500HD before, you'll need to change the batteries way more often than the Blackvue, go with the DR650 or perhaps Blacksys CH-100B better systems with better features than the FineVu which is >2 years old now.

Windows Movie Maker, it's pretty easy to use. Import, trim, export. I usually use the preset for YouTube if I'm uploading to YouTube. No point exporting in a higher bitrate as Youtube will compress the shit out of it anyways

I've been using the Evo 128GB since boxing day on my 650-2ch, it was on sale for $50 CAD IIRC. Downside to 128GB is the app doesn't populate all the video clips sometimes, too many files. The ADATA 64GB from NCIX/Memory Express also works and it's usually $20-25, their 128GB is crap though

Don't get the Finevu CR500. It's fairly old tech at this point. I had one. Lasted about a year before the battery gave out. Also, for some odd reason, it only recorded when it felt like it, and would not record sometimes. The one accident I was a witness to (and it should have captured), it wasn't recording so it was of no use. It's relegated to my junk pile now and has been replaced with the 1st gen DR650.
The new 2nd gen DR650 has the Sony sensor so picture quality should be a bit better. I find my 1st gen DR650 not very sharp (even with the hacked 13Mbps firmware) and license plates aren't really readable until I'm make 4-5 ft away from the car. I'm hoping maybe the current gen stuff is better.

VPD were able to arrest the guy a few blocks away, within 20 minutes based on her description. We forgot about the dash cam, and footage places him right at the house. Cops said the prosecutor was going to charge him with the B&E anyways as he was caught so soon after the break in with all the stuff, but the video puts him right on the same block at the same time as the break in, so they're confident the charges will stick.

Depends on the dashcam, XiaoYi for example 1296P is just interpolated so it's not all that noticeable. For 60 FPS vs 30 FPS at night time it just doubles the frame so again not all that noticeable.
I tested out a few cams that supported 1080 at a true 45 fps and it does pickup license plates better at night for sure
45 FPS no HDR
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gQctyd_YBk
30 FPS with HDR
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20R4C0_EmFw
The difference is very noticeable but after that experience with the Evoque I stuck with 45 fps. I can always crank up brightness in post but much harder to enhance it so that a plate is legible

I recently bought a dash cam (Blackvue DR650GW-2CH). Thought about getting it installed but decided to do it myself. It was so simple, pop the fuse and just read the label on which fuse to wrap the cable to. Hiding the wire was a breeze, you could probably pop the liner with a sturdy spoon/fork.

I bought my Blackvue from them. Mind you this was back when he was still running his operation out of his house (probably a couple of years ago). They're reputable - I wouldn't have any problems buying from them again and their prices are reasonable.
I did my own installation so I can't comment on their install services though.
I've purchased at least 6 dash cams from Alex. No issues whatsoever. Like syee, I do my own installation, so no comment on the type of work they do.
Of all the things I've purchased from him, the external power unit has got to be the coolest thing. It charges while your car is running and stores the power in battery form. While you are parked, your dashcam runs off the external.

Any idea if there's
a) a newer version to the Mini 0806? It's been out for over a year now.
b) the best place to pick up one? Not in a hurry. How low does some of the past sale prices go down to?
Thanks
Edited: It seems like Mini 0826 is newer?
Wider in size. But the specs is all the same...using the same A7LA50 chipset, etc.
Only difference is internal 8gb + external vs. the 806 having dual microsd.

0807 with capacitor and Sony IMX322 should be available soon
0826 is like the uglier cousin of the 0806, no point really

has anyone tried a 64gig sdcard in a Blackvue dashcam that states it only supports up to 32gig? I've noticed that with the combination of parking mode, a 32gig wont' even be able to store a full 8-9hrs while parked at work before data gets overwritten when set for full hd/1080P.
I guess I'll just have to try it.... the dashcam in question is the very basic FHD3500 series.

anyone running a higher end camera say from lukas/thinkware for a few years without issues?
noticed my g1w with capacitor no longer records if it's been sitting outside on nice days even if it's under shade. After parking in a garage it's totally fine.
so should I invest in a more expensive one or are they all kinda prone to heat issues after a year or two...capacitors or not?

I had a lukas.. still working.. but technology moves so fast I don't think it is worth paying more than $100 / camera.
Problem with any capacitor / battery in camera is heat. I think the best way to get around it is to hook the camera to a li ion battery pack, some where in the foot well.. get that to supply power to the camera and skip the power in camera nonsense.

I had a blackvue and I will not buy another one of their products.......reliability is questionable. There are cheaper cameras out there that has a better operating temp range.

Anyone else have issues with the rear cam on the DR650GW-2CH?
Mine will turn on if I reboot from the PMP, light comes on, then it will proceed to record maybe 1 or 2 clips then no longer work. Blackvue app will connect to rear cam but doesn't show a picture
The front still works fine I guess but kinda defeats the purpose of getting a 2ch.

When you say work 1 or 2 clip, you mean only the rear camera and the front will keep recording? How is you rear camera installed? Is the rear cable always flexing when you open the rear hatch? If so it is probably a bad cable.

If you look inside the cable there's a very thin pin. Make sure it's not bent on both ends, and make sure you didn't forcefully insert it (ha!).
There's supposed to be a little gold showing when it's fully plugged in. Warranty it if it persists. Mine's perfectly fine.

Honestly video and build quality seem pretty good, no complaints there. Only things to watch for is it switches to 1080p/30 if you turn on the lane departure and forward collision features, and the UI slows down a LOT. Like press a button and it responds 5s later. If you leave those off, the thing works damn near perfectly. I'll see if I can pull a video clip if you want.

To be honest I haven't haha...from what I see the motion sensor is a toggle feature, I don't think it activates automatically and if that's the case it's a bit of a pain. I've wired the thing to turn on with acc power so it's off when parked.

Ran into this beauty of a guy on Friday, absolutely nobody behind me on this corner and he comes charging up the side (it's way closer than it looks, you guys all know how perspective works on these dash cams) and forces his way in (no signal) and I honk at him, he proceeds to brake check me and then brake check me down to like 20 a second time after that before taking off at like 130+ onto the bridge.
What a tough guy driving a Sienna van with fugly chrome wheels :heckno: even has the nerve to roll his window down and try to yell at me on the freeway after. What's up with people not taking responsibility for their stupid fucktard actions nowadays.

i purchased a CR500hd from speed syndicate about a year or two ago. no problem but a few weeks ago (i only just noticed today) the camera started acting up. all 5 lights stay on as if the camera is bricked and i cant get it to do anything
tried hooking it up to pc and it isnt even recognizing it or saying "USB mode" like it normally would..
did a little bit of searching myself, and was able to find others that had run into the same problem, but no resolutions. has anybody experienced this with the cr500hd, and if so, what was the solution (if any?)
thanks in advance !

Blackvue is certainly a good choice, but I'd say they tend to be a bit pricey -- or at least, for me, they are a little pricey.
I'm currently looking for a dashcam myself, and I have my eyes set on the Xiaoyi Yi. The video it produces seems to be of top quality, and while it doesn't look that small in pictures, the real thing actually looks quite small, esp when the mounting arm is taken into account.
I'd definitely get in touch with BlackBoxMyCar (https://www.blackboxmycar.com/collections/black-friday-2016) as their product line is extensive, and their service quality top notch.

I take it you talking about the Yi dashcam and not the Yi action camera but either one, the video quality is good (from my research) for both night and day, but the form factor is not ideal. Certainly the Yi dashcam comes in gray and big for dashcam. It was $79 at ncix yesterday but now it jumped to $120. check out dashcamtalk if you haven't. Gearbest seems to have some good deals on quality dashcams recently.

Yeah the grey is quite visible, I've seen some people online just throw some black paint or tape over it and it makes a big difference.
If you don't need wifi, I would definitely check out A119 in that price range

they have pretty good video quality but no parking mode and battery based is a bit of a downside.
If you don't mind having an LCD screen the Vicovation OPIA2 is a pretty solid unit. Has a parking mode, not as good as the Korean dash cams but the video quality is better.

Does anyone run a rear camera with tinted windows? Is it completely worthless at night or still fairly functional?
Alternatively I need to add a back up camera to my Jeep anyways, so I'm wondering if there are any dual channel setups that either have a waterproof rear camera that can mount outside, or allow the rear channel to come from any camera?
IMASA
12-22-2016, 06:20 AM
Dash cams at the rear typically don't work well at night because you don't have headlights lighting up your path and you have other car's headlights shining into your camera.
However, they still serve a purpose. They're able to show who's in what lane, what color and what car, and can provide proof that if you were rear ended, that you didn't roll back and hit the guy behind you.
I have rear tint on both my cars and a crappy dash camera in the rear. These were like early 1st gen cameras that I used in the front and then moved to the back when I bought better dash cameras. They don't work great, but still better than not having one.
If you have multiple power outlets or one in the trunk, then I prefer having 2 separate cameras rather than paying a premium for a front camera that is dual channel setup.
