Question about the thinkware f800 pro.
What can I expect to see for the lights on the dashcam as it goes into parking mode and if the voltage cut off kicks in?
This is my first thinkware, I've had blackvue in the past and i can tell the different modes from led colour then finally, no LED's when voltage cutoff kicks in.
For the thinkware i always see LED's lit up. I have cutoff set to more than 12v so that i can try to see a change in the LED's faster.

whats a great set up today? dual channel with hopefully not too much hassle having parking mode run without killing the battery.
would it be like a blackvue 750 with the magic pro

I really liked my old garmin before it died, the image was clear and audio was good enough. The other cars garmin has good video but no audio, if you are in the market for a dashcam make sure it records audio. I run a YI cam in my daily, the video is about as good as the garmin at 1/4 the price. I'm going to get more once they go on sale again. I run DJI osmo action and Gopro heros on my bike, the DJI stabilization is amazing.

I was able to wire up a F800 pro to a 20,000 MAH battery pack. When the car is on, it uses the car's battery and charges the battery pack at the same time. When it's off, it switches to the pack for parking mode. Runs for days on end without draining your car battery. Don't have to flip any switches, swap any wires or anything. All works seamlessly. Took a little bench testing and research, but I found all the parts that make it work.

the benefit of a battery pack is never worrying about a flat battery in the winter
but if you have a short commute it never gets a chance to charge enough to get substantial amount of record time in parking mode

Q3 quickcharge is just as fast as the non hardwired version on the cell link. I rather put ware and tare on a 30 dollar pack than my 300 dollar car batt I guess.

can you just from the 12v plug it in to the battery pack, and from the battery pack, plug in to the camera? that way the battery pack is powering the cam and the 12v tops up the battery pack while the car is running?

That's how my system works. Also not all systems run off 12v and you can't get a USB bank to push 12v without telling it to with moduels. They default to 5v at most and will not power it.
I'll let everyone know how it performs. It's been a few days and the bank is still at 96% chsrge

the 51R car battery for compact cars dont hold much juice above 12.4V
The current draw is so small for these cams, I’ve left my Yi going for a 4 days and no issue starting vehicle when I returned. For single event this might work, for continuous HD recording with audio there won’t be enough room on the biggest card possible without overwrighting. Also depending on the cam, might get hot and fail in the sun.

It's been a full work week. I drive about 20mins to work, 30mins home. Car is parked about 8hrs running F800Pro energy-saving mode.
My battery back has 4 lights indicating charge. I'm still on the 4th light indicating 75%+ charge. I don't see charging being an issue with the amount of driving (pretty low).
I'm going to do more tests on this to make sure it doesn't blow up anyone's car.

What is a cheap, but decent dashcam out there? I used to run the G1W-H which was suitable for what it was. I'm looking for dashcams for people who don't care about dashcams, like my younger brother, my dad, and my gf's parents. Pref not too flashy because gf & parents live in newton/whalley lmfao
2CH options could be considered, but I'd like the install of it to be easier than not. I think front is better than none, considering my gf's mom got rear ended (very slow, in a high school parking lot) the other day and didn't take ANY photos. Alternatively, since their windows aren't tinted, perhaps a rearview mounted one which has a rear camera looking into cabin and out the back window.

If 2ch is within your budget, I would always recommend 2ch. A rear cam is better than nothing and every bit helps cause you never know how your car will get hit.
If it's a sedan, that's even that much more work. It's a PITA if it's a Hatchback or anything with a lift back.
A dashcam is an investment for the life of your vehicle and longer as it can be transferred to the next vehicle. If the back window is a bit dirty now, it'll still benefit in the summer. lol
2ch is totally worth it imo.
I got clipped from behind one time when a truck was merging into my lane. So the front wouldn't have caught anything. It just made the investigation a lot easier with a rear cam. Considering the driver had a false witness on his side.

Got a Garmin 55 dashcam for Christmas and need to get around to installing it in my car. Read through a good chunk of this thread, but still had some questions as I have never used a dash cam previously.
1) Is it worth it to buy the dash cam parking mode cable (currently $40) to hardwire the dash cam to the car? Would also likely have to pay for someone to install it properly.
2) From what I have read, seems that Garmin's have trouble in the heat during summer. Although it doesn't get that hot in Vancouver, the inside of my car would sitting out in the parking lot at work... is it preferable to run the power from the cars cig lighter/standard power source and then place the dash cam in the glove box when not in use? Or just leave it plugged in all the time?
twitchyzero
01-23-2020, 01:36 PM
1. depends on your car battery size, if you drive a compact car it might make sense to buy a battery pack instead
if you decide to hardwire to the vehicle then get the OBD type, you dont need to pay anyone as it's popping off A pillar trim, tucking the wire in,done
2. leave it plugged in but buy appropriate SD cards that can take constant writes

Leaving it constantly on (parking mode) is really up to your security preference. You're vulnerable to hit-and-runs if you're not recording while your car is parked. The downside to having it run all the time is that it constantly drains your car battery so it's longevity over time will fade.
I personally leave mine plugged in all the time. I've already been a victim to several hit-and-runs when I was parked (and caught them all, lol). The only time I unplug my dashcam is when my car is completely safe in the garage.

I'm currently using two Yi Dashcams, one front and one rear.
Looking to upgrade them to something that has motion sensors. Anything out there that's budget friendly?
Reason I'm asking was there was a day I was parked in Richmond, sitting inside my car eating lunch. Car got hit from the side. If I wasn't there, I'm positive that person would of ran off.

Good price and seems to slip under the radar since no one mentions them.

The BlackVue DR590X would be the modern day replacement for your camera. Has all the features the DR400G has and a bit more. Or they also have the DR900X which shoots in 4K UHD.

Did anyone use a dashcam that comes with an electrostatic sticker?
From my understanding, you stick the electrostatic sticker on the windshield, and then stick the 3M tape on top of it. So essentially, the 3M is not being stuck directly onto the windshield. Is this some new trend?
The last dashcasm I installed was 5 years ago, and you just stick the dashcam directly onto the windshield with 3M tape. Is this electrostatic sticker strong?

This is the first time I've heard of it, but it looks like a way to stick the camera to the windshield that is reusable and doesn't leave glue residue. I haven't had trouble removing the 3M stickers, sometimes they fall right off during the summer. The power wire stops the camera from hitting the ground.FeelsBadMan

lol, I had the same issue. The heat from the sun removes the dashcam and it's clean with no residue. I'm wondering would it be any better using this static sticker. But I guess the 3M would just melt off the static sticker then.

I've had the A800 for about a year now with no issues. Hasn't fallen off using the static sticker.
Only annoyance is that they have their watermark on any videos I download. It's cheap enough (sub $200 with rear camera and hardwire kit) that I just don't care enough about.

Ended up ordering an A800S and A500S for both vehicles. My original Blackvue dr400g (RS Group Buy from 2012) finally kicked the bucket.
For the price and functionality, it is hard to beat. Watermark isn't an issue since the footage would only be used for insurance/accident purposes or for the lols if it catches something interesting to share.

Here's a recent vid from my older garmin dash cam 20, what I like about it is that it records decent audio. I used this camera in lots of my old mission drag vids. The image is better than the Yi I in my EJ1.
I bought another new Garmin not long ago, to my surprise the Canadian model does not record audio. Then it failed in just over a year, Garmin customer service offered to sell me one with a minor discount off retail. Fail

So I installed the 70mai A500 dashcam with the hardwire kit on my parents car several months back. It seems like it's ok if my parents drive everyday, but if not, the battery dies.
It turns out that the voltage cutoff on their kit is set at 11.4V which is too low. Is there anyway to change it to 12V?
Kind of annoyed right now, considering pretty much every source on the internet says it requires about minimum of 12V to reliably start a car, I'm not sure why this was even built to cut off at 11.4V unless it's a regional thing.

What kind of car? How old is the battery? I would start with checking the draw and then check with that camera disconnected.

^I'd suggest running a power magic pro hardwire instead. The newer gen power magic pro I recall cutoff are higher than the old ones. This will at least cut off earlier to leave enough juice to start your car.

Cyclists always pull that shit. Frankly you’re insane when you’re thinking you’ll beat the green running a yellow/red crossing a 2 lane street. Most cyclists I see don’t even look at the second lane just like that guy did. Generally the car in the closer lane blocks the majority of the view so you’re just crossing into that second lane hoping it’s clear

It super traumatizing for the driver too, my dad went through a 4 way stop with right of way a couple years back in his Highlander and a cyclist at full speed ran the stop sign, hit his passenger front and flew over the hood… totally fucked up the fender and the bumper detached etc, my dad is still traumatized by it to this day doubting himself and wondering if he did something wrong cuz he’s old and the guy was spitting fire at him the whole time.
cyclist prob went after his insurance too i imagine, further stress, when it was the cyclist's fault and no insurance to claim on.
i did hear recently that icbc went after a cyclist even though it was the driver's fault? (news story was from the view of the cyclist so i don't know who was at fault)

With that video could you file a civil suit against the cyclist for damages etc?

I believe the cyclist was originally deemed 25% at fault by ICBC, hence why ICBC sent him 25% of the repair bill. After external arbitration, the cyclist was deemed to be not at fault and didn't end up having to pay the bill.
In this case, the cyclist will be deemed 100% at fault no matter how you look at it. I wonder what ICBC can do if the cyclist doesn't have insurance and also can't afford to pay it. Will they come after him? Civil suit?
i imagine they would if they went after the guy for just 25%
sort of back on topic, any recommendations for a dashcam under $125 with a suction cup?

Can't get blood from a stone. If they got no money, they got no money.
Sue all you want, but if all I have is a T-shirt and a sack of potatoes, I hope you like hash browns and are a size medium.

Yeah, he is a raging knob.
But you also kind of unnecessarily escalated it by just by making the effort to lower your window just to talk to him in the first place.

What's a decent suction-mounted dashcam these days? I'm gonna be driving a bunch of rentals for work and I want something I can easily bring with me.

Anyone want a Finevu cr500hd for free before I go and recycle it? I didn't check footage often, so I don't know how well it works, but the lights still light up like it should. So consider it only good for parts. Includes CPL filter.

Yeah surprisingly a really good camera at that price point. I picked up one for each car and if you pay attention to the alie sales, sometimes you can grab the cam for around $56 CAD.

i did a search and several diff models with 70mai in the title came up that all look different, all over $100
