don't get me started on the whole "sweatshop" bullshit cause that's basically what it is. goddamn activists out to make a name for themselves paint every factory in a huge country like China with the same brush when one accident happens at some decrepid owner's factory. And besides, are ppl willing to pay TRIPLE for what they pay now if we pay workers the same $8.something minimum wage as in Canada? The answer is clearly no when we see ppl buying pirated/fake goods rather than paying for the real LV or Burberry. Also, most ppl have a wrong perception of the garment industry... the factory owners usually don't own the brands like Polo or RL or what have you, corporate bodies in North America does. Do you seriously think the big brands pay the factories $40 out of their $60 in order for the factories to be all loving and benevolent and pay the workers quadrouple or more than the local standard of living? To Canadians who are used to $10 bucks starbucks coffee, $0.20 per hr may seem very little. But to a Chinese factory worker used to $2 full day of 5 course meals, that's enough to get by for what they do. The big brands preach this and that but do they really put the money where their mouths are? No. The factories are improving the work conditions out of their own pockets while they're being painted as evil money grabbers by some bullshit activists when it's the suits sitting in the boardrooms in North America who are to blame. I could go on for pages but that'd be too far off topic =p ed99, I'll post more pics for you when I have time to upload them on my computer! wrong side of the road is fun Ivan =p but in all seriousness, I've only tested it for a few blocks (I have yet to get some time off to go get my licence transfered) my uncle is driving it mostly. and speaking of warenty, it's a good thing we have it cause there was a defective door latch that kept on thinking the door's open when we're driving so it chirps the alarm. scared the crap out of everyone around (maybe we should do it when we're in a hurry since everyone got out of the way). But yea... so much for german engineering :p hmm... yea I haven't tried milk since I'm back (I keep on saying back even though I spent more of my life in Canada and I also keep on saying I'm "coming back" to vancouver) but yea I heard it's like whipping cream compared to ours! hmmm..... good thing I'm taking centrum to suppliment my poor diet in HK lol |
Milk in hong kong sucks ... period... my honger co workers kept telling me there is this mong auw (cow) brand for milk.... some china brand that makes really good milk... supposedly the brand that china astronauts use or something... and it's suppose to get listed soon on the stock exchange......so I was curious enough to try it..... and my conclusion is that hongers don't know their milk ... cuz the milk sucked big time...... and rx-titus... what do you do for a living? haha.. I think I need to change fields, I'm making damn pennies... sigh....based on your posts... is it safe to assume you are working in the garment manufacturing industry or doing trading (import/export of garments) ? ... :P |
why would you drink milk in hk/china? you drink soymilk! :p but are you guys talking about those fresh milk or homo milk? |

How high do you live? I live on the 17F in Mong Kwok, and at night I could hear cars like Evolution and TypeRs going 70kph in the back streets. One night I could actually hear the sound of blowoff valve from some car lol... If this is your first time in HK, please keep both your eyes on your wallet and valuables. |
1) Door latches on the 997 - seems to be a common problem as my friend had the same problem on his. Pretty minor for a first year production car. 2) Milk in HK - Last I checked, HK imports Australian milk. 3) Sweatshop production - I agree with everything RXTitus says about fault lying squarely on the shoulders of N.American executives. However, there are some factory owners that don't provide basic humanitarian conditions for the workers. |
chopchop, I live on the 42nd floor, which is kinda scary at first cause I'm not too fond of heights.... lol skinnypup, well... the car's licence plate still has my dad's initials OR our company's initials depending on which way you look at it :p marco911 hmm yea I just talked to someone who has the new 997 as well and they said they had a door latch problem too! wonder if they'll do a recall.... and yea I know what you mean too about not every factory being the same and I've heard stories of how much a life is "worth" in China when accidents happen which is quite disturbing... here's a pic from the ride I use sometime getting to China :D http://x5d.xanga.com/64a810413224820.../z14907617.jpg and they're serious about avian flu here.... they'll send hounds after you if you're caught with meat! http://www3.telus.net/usoff/hk/DSCN4116.jpg |
u guys live high up =\ i live on the ground floor in kowloon tong haha |
^ where? I live in kowloon tong too |
"yau yat chuen" go out of the festival walk mtr stn, up that little walkway that's wrapped around the mall, and then turn left past the productivity council...it's like...that block |
Personally I think the person who designed Festival Walk should be shot in the head...... they try to be "artistic" and make all the floors asymetrical to one and other and have some sort of optical illusion when you look up that the floors are all different height..... and they try to be "smart" by moving the escalators to different locations on different floors (and even the elevators you'd have to switch from one to another to move from top to bottom floors!) so ppl have to walk around and be forced to see ALL the shops in order to get from one floor to the next. Yea it might make sense to shop owners but it's )(#$ing annoying when you're in a hurry or trying to meet someone there at a place you're trying to find! I've made it my personal goal to never shop there to support that kinda insanity... but then it seems most malls in HK do that.... God I miss Oakridge or Park Royal :p |

no one give a fuck about speed limit there. my dad was complaining that there is too much cops in canada, driving exoctic is useless here, you cant get much attention and you cant speed without cops suspending your license. even tho you can buy an Carrera GT here for the price of a F430 in hk, i still bet its more fun driving a F430 in hk then here in van, at least there are actually ppl on the street looking at ur car. i still dunno why ppl on revscene still think its godly to own a Porsche in hk.... its a pretty normal things. and there are more Ferrari per capita then anywhere in the world there. |

Happy belated New Years to everyone! Here's more pictures from the land of the unpaid OTs. Hiking from Central up to The Peak http://www3.telus.net/usoff/hk/DSCN4137.jpg http://www3.telus.net/usoff/hk/DSCN4147.jpg Count down at the Peninsula hotel. Pre-mayhem with the crowds starting to gather http://www3.telus.net/usoff/hk/DSCN4408.jpg http://www3.telus.net/usoff/hk/DSCN4413.jpg The cordened off crowds at the height of the countdown http://www3.telus.net/usoff/hk/DSCN4427.jpg |
niiiice view. reminds me of my place in hk. i live on the south side of the island though. |
Holy crap, you hiked all the way to the peak? I'll be moving to HK on Feb 23rd... I won't have a place nearly as nice though :\ Probably going to rent a village home out in NT - that way I can have the space I am used to, for a reasonable price :) |

RX Titus... please keep posting whenever you can! i haven't been to HK for more than 6 years now and i miss it... so i'm trying to live it vicariously through your pictures again... |
yeap I hiked from central up to the peak on the Old Peak road. The hike was not as grueling as it seems (I think the Stawamus Chief is way more demanding). LOL thumper I'll make you a deal, you post some pics of Vancouver and I'll post HK pics when I can :p and yea leilomo (nice name =p) I think that was the most people I've seen together at one time in my life so far (I've never been to a concert in Canada). Even the fenced off area inside the hotel was crowded! |

Of course, that was in June... pretty damn hot and humid during that time |
same as what thumper said. I came here in 89 and never had the opportunity to go back yet... and I'm only 20 now so yeah, I don't remember much of HK. been hearing lots about the place from friends and I find it really interesting... so please post as many pics as you can! :) |
