Lol... buying a few other watches and some extra jewellery to get your Rolex is LITERALLY the definition of playing games to get your watch. Might as well just have bought it grey market and skipped the headaches! The premiums are really coming down a lot.

beatdownvictim 01-26-2023 03:42 PM

It was either that or grey market.
As i said my wife wanted some jewelry anyways so worked out great for me.

Close! I knew you'd get it pretty quick

I got a Laco type B 42mm... What really put me over the edge was the black case and strap, 50mm lug to lug, and the heritage (Laco being one of the original 5 manufacturers to make flieger watches for the luftwaffe in the 30's)

Edit: and also a 20% CNY sale lol

https://www.laco-watches.com/media/i...-neu-20201.png

I'll post pics when it arrives

beatdownvictim 01-26-2023 05:41 PM

I guessed laco! That was my first automatic watch.

Badhobz 01-26-2023 06:42 PM

gawd damnnn !! thats gorgeous!

grats pup!!!!!

thats a helluva first watch purchase. Most people just buy a seiko 5 for a first time entry piece. This is way more interesting with a crap ton of history, a good movement, and authentic military design. WELL DONE

Been pushing ppl to buy Hamilton Khaki's since 2014  Couldn't quite afford one at the time so I nagged at nabs to get one lol

rb 01-26-2023 11:06 PM

Nice purchase Skinny. Making me want a flieger now. Wear it in good health!

unit 01-27-2023 01:38 PM

ive always been a big fan of the iwc pilot. problem is i don't really wear watches often because i work in a trade setting and dont want to fuck up the watch. also i'm not a huge fan of wearing a watch on a daily basis, but would only wear it when i go out. because of this i was never really able to justify buying a nice watch, but now with the iwc pilot xx i'm sort of interested again. it has a 120h power reserve, so i could wear it on the weekend and maybe a day or two when i go out during the week. kinda tempted to check it out this weekend, they have one at the dealer

bcrdukes 01-27-2023 03:12 PM

Buy now. Regret later!

SkinnyPupp 01-27-2023 03:44 PM

$5K on a watch to wear on the weekend actually makes me dizzy to think about... But if you're in a position to be able to do that, good on you! I was looking through the history of the thread yesterday, and some people had some ridiculous collections.

Actually funny enough, on the page rb posted yesterday from 2014, someone was asking about an Archimedes flieger watch. And then old school member nabs posts his really nice Khaki watch he just got that day. You go back a few pages and you see him wondering about getting into the hobby lol

unit 01-27-2023 05:15 PM

i think the way i look at it is asides from the initial depreciation, you can keep the thing for the rest of your life if you want to and it's still going to be worth most of what you paid for it should you ever fall on hard times and need to sell it. if you sort of amortize that initial few thousand loss for buying brand new over time, it's not really horrible. also im not a collector so i wouldnt be doing this for 10 watches, im much more of a buy one nice thing and keep that one nice thing sort of person.

lol the gf gave me a pretty negative reaction when i told her about it. might have to dream about it a little longer than i thought, or wait for one to pop up on secondary to justify it. oh well it's not going anywhere anytime soon.

Maybe consider doing what I did, and get something that fits the same bill in terms of design and history, but won't break the bank? Like I get the appeal of the IWC, and they were one of the original makers of these watches. But so was the brand I got (although they've probably been sold a few times since then, they still have that heritage).

And you can get a similar watch either with a decorated ETA movement with 70 hours of power for like $1200

https://www.laco-watches.com/media/i...slide-2021.jpg

or one with a Japanese movement and more basic finishing on the case for like $300.

https://www.laco-watches.com/media/i...slide-2022.jpg

And of course there are others out there, like Stowa, another one of the original makers of flieger watches for Germany. $1200 with a Selitta movement

https://www.stowa.de/cosmoshop/defau...klassik_40.jpg

Even Seiko has some, which is how I first noticed the type B design that I really like in the first place

https://www.horologii.com/wp-content...ts-flieger.png

All the way down to AliExpress knockoff watches with Seiko movements for like $100, which of course I doubt you're into but there you go.

FeelsGoodMan

Your money. Tell her to shut the hell up. What else is money for other than to bring you some semblance of happiness. So do what you gotta do. FeelsGoodMan

SkinnyPupp 01-28-2023 03:05 AM

Or you could do that...

SkinnyPupp 01-28-2023 06:43 AM

Finally got my watch today! Waited all day, had a dinner to go to which I was late for, but totally worth it. I was just staring and glancing at it all night.

One thing that annoyed me pretty quickly is that the buckle on the leather strap is not black coated like the watch case. They sell one like that of course, for $73 USD (original one costs $40). This is just a "me" thing and I'll probably play around with straps eventually anyway

woohoo! (also picked up a nice gift at dinner, a bottle of Macallan 18 triple cask... Thought it was funny that it's worth more than the watch I coveted so badly! LOL)

lol more like $400, but apparently these are hot items so people are paying more for them. I dunno I'm saving it for a special occasion though.. if one of those ever happens to me

HonestTea 01-28-2023 03:15 PM

Picked this up in Las Vegas - Walk-in, no waits. Pretty surprised and extremely happy!

Oh snap.

Seeing as we're on a watch picture roll, I finally wore this the other day for the first time since picking it up back in November 2022.
