And yes, unless you spend for a high end brand like Rolex or Patek that makes their own movements then most automatics use the same movement too. So you pay for materials, design, and marketing.

I'd still like an Oris skeleton watch even if it has a mass produced movement :p

Oris makes some very nice quality pieces for the price point. I have an Oris Artelier Complication myself

Depends on what you're after. Quartz is more actually more accurate, but the mechanics are very generic.

Like Sonick said, Swiss made brands like Tag and Tissot are actually respected watch brands - the companies dedicate their whole brand towards watches, Quartz or not.

But Gucci, Armani, etc. are fashion brands, and they make their watches to be more fashion accessories. So pretty much one of their designers draws a picture of what they want the watch to look like, and send it into a generic watchmaking company, likely Fossil, who then outsources to China to be made. Ironic how people still hunt for "authenticity" of these watches.

^Well, Tag Heuer made sunglasses and branded cell phones for awhile :)

Haha, Tag's glasses are actually pretty decent too. They have some interesting styles.. But yeah, they wouldn't be my first choice..

notjustforshow 07-21-2011 12:20 AM

Contrary to what Tag would make you think, they do not make their own watches, cell phones, or glasses.

Though they have a number of great watches in their line up, they are outsourced to the highest bidder and have the generic swiss movements put into them (nothing wrong with this). Unfortunately you will find similarities in design with such brands as Tissot, where a rebranded "Tag" version of the same watch is easily triple the price.

For this reason, 2nd hand Tags can be bought for a fraction of the retail price. If I could afford an entry level Tag brand new, I would get an Oris instead (considering today's market).

Also, please try not to base any purchase decision on "the watch snob." He is purely commentary but his suggestions are nonsensical. If he is suggesting a reader to ditch his Uboat and buy a Patek, that is pretty much the same as telling me to get rid of my Subaru and get a Maserati (or something worth 5x my car). A better comparison would be suggesting the reader to look at Sinn watches, as they are a tool watch, and carry a lot more cred than Uboat for the same price.

Yeah, after his articles were mentioned on this thread I read a few of them and they are entertaining but I would take what he says with a grain of salt.

.

Well they now have their own "in-house" movement with Cal. 1887, which is reasonably priced for an in-house movement (although some people saying buying Seiko's movement developing their movement with Seiko's designs doesn't count as an in-house movement). Also, some of their higher end pieces have the El Primero movement. Also, they've been making some new innovative stuff like the Mikograph, able to time to 1/100th of a second. Having said that I agree, there are better "bang for buck" watches (e.g. Oris, Frederique Constant, etc)

^Nice to have a watch fan here that follows these things.
Yah the bashing they received from the community such as TZ and WUS was anything but nice. Nothing wrong with Tag, but it may be more appropriate to say that there is nothing wrong with Heuer (remember those old school stopwatches??). I've owned a Tag previously, and sold it due to a certain golf star's reputation.

Hey guys! I've got an old automatic Rado watch that my dad gave me when I was in HS and it isn't running anymore. Any suggestions for places to get it fixed?

^ replica meaning fake? A watch is 20k because of the movement, brand and materials etc. Why would you buy a fake?

Because of the design and its availability. Makes logical economic sense to me.

BlackZRoadster 08-04-2011 09:44 AM

^ do you wear fake designer clothing , leather goods etc? If you already do, then i dont see a problem with your choice because those all make financial sense to you.

I have some replica designer good and I have some genuine designer goods, I have some genuine car parts I have some replica car parts. It really depends on the product itself, the design and the options that are offered on the market.

dont get me wrong, i will use replica car parts. Example: There are fake AC lips out there for BMW, but they dont have the AC badge or emblem on it. They just copy the style but don't pretend they are the real thing.

But the Panerai you posted wasnt just copying the style, it's also got the Panerai logo on it. I have no problem wearing a shirt that has a similar design to a designer label. However, i wont wear a replicated style that's stamped with a logo that didnt make the product.

to each their own i guess

moky 08-04-2011 10:44 AM

i think what jackygor posted were the originals, but there are some "replicas" out there that are just "homages" and don't have the logos. i could be wrong about his idea of a replica.

besides, why would anyone want to wear a replica watch. it can't keep time!
