There are two components to the PS2 - the GPU and CPU. The original PS3 (60gb and 20gb) have both, so they can play these games natively, without any issues.

With the 80GB, they removed the CPU, but kept the GPU. So it can play PS2 games with the CPU being emulated by the PS3 hardware. Unfortunately, emulation accuracy is not very good as you can tell from my article.

With the 40GB, they cut costs massively, so it doesn't have any components from the PS2 at all. It is impossible at this time to emulate the PS2 with PS3 hardware alone.

Ah well, like I say, we already have a PS2, so not really a concern.

Liking the look of Costco's bundle, - same as most other places' $400 40GB/Spider-Man3 bundle, but with a second wireless controller and Blu-Ray remote, for $480.

They have a similar package for the 80GB, $585 compared to the $500 most places have for the more basic bundle.

it is not really necessary for the 2nd controller, since the rumble one is coming out early next year, and this newer version will feel like a next gen controller, not a cheap piece of plastic.

As for the BD remote...I feel good enough to use my controller for playback

I don't see what the big deal with the rumble controller is about. The normal ps3 controller is fine. I like the fact that its light weight. The L2 & R2 buttons are just funny.

i'd say almost 90% of the people i know hate the fking ps3 controllers. You are truly a minority.

It feels like cheap plastic, and no weight like darthchilli said.

It isn't very next generation using the same fucking design for 3 generations. No Rumble? What the hell, give me a break.

My PS1 controller had rumble on it.

i have no problems with the ps3, it feels slightly cheap, might be the edges? not sure

but not having the weight, is an awesome plus, as well as being wireless.

i actually prefer the L2 R2 buttons, the way their made is kind of neccessary for some games, ie NFS PS

edit: btw thanks for clearing that up Skinnypupp,

that's dumb though, i totally forgot that the original ps3's were 20/60 gb.

you'd think the 80gb, would be the ultimate ps3,

All HD-DVD and Blu-Ray rips are using MPEG-4 AVC (h.264) with an MKV (Matroska) wrapper. The PS3 does not support that wrapper. So in order to get it to work, you would have to transcode it to a format the PS3 will read (MP4, MOV, TS, AVI) or hope that the scene starts releasing rips that are more compatible (good luck).

BTW the PS3 now supports DivX, an MPEG-4 Part 2 codec. This does NOT mean that it will play XviD (also an MPEG-4 Part 2 codec). It will play DivX files and ONLY DivX files. Again, nobody on the scene uses anything but XviD for AVI files (for some stupid reason - DivX is actually superior in many ways) so once again, PS3 gets the shaft when it comes to trying to download and watch TV.

How come my PS3 can't read .avi files?

And what's the best (easiest) way to to convert codec types?

Yeah, I was going by some shitty information, and the firmware didn't arrive for me until I was just about to go to bed, so I couldn't test it myself. So I reposted that incorrect info here on the forum. Oops! I'll never trust Gizmodo again for anything related to PC's.

Hmm you're right, there are some 720p WMV rips out there, in the 4GB range. I have tested these with the 360, and they have always worked. I'll try the PS3 later today, now that it has VC-1 WMV support.

Most HD rips are in h.264 format using the Matroska container, which neither console supports (and I would bet anything that they never will).
