Arrival 9/10

Director Denis Villeneuve comes through again after 2015's Sicario. Great cerebral sci-fi along the same vein as Contact.

Magnificent Seven (2016) 8/10

I was really apprehensive about watching this especially since I'm a fan of the original, but gave it a try since I like Antoine Fuqua films (Training Day, Tears Of The Sun, The Equalizer). It's great how it's a throwback to over the top spaghetti western style rather than the realistic gritty westerns of late. Great to see they weren't afraid to use such a diverse cast as well.

Split - 9/10

The internets was right - M. Night shyamamamalan is back!

Terribly captivating, and James McAvoy is fucking amazing.

Manchester by the sea. 7.5/10
was it really good? it was ok. It's not la la land good and I don't think Casey did a great job; he just played himself to be honest. Casting was spot on.
There were few last scenes that were great, esp Lee and his X wife at the very end but over all, i can't say it is Golden globe worthy, and I do appreciate these films already.

6/10 Terrifying at some parts...also humorous. Ending didn't do it for me, got a little too ridiculous.

Spoiler!

There's lots of subtlety and nuances, and I think both director and main actors did this very well.

La La Land. 9/10.

This is an amazing movie. -great acting and singing by Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.

-definite heavy favourite to win many Oscars.

God I love Oscar season. So many good movies have come out lately. I know I'm rating my movies high but it seems all the good movies were saved for November / December releases last year.

1. Arrival 7/10
2. Silence 9/10
3. Split 8/10
4. Hacksaw Ridge 8/10
5. Patriot's Day 8/10

I loved Split if anyone hasn't had a chance to see it. M. Night Shyamalan is back as a director with this movie. Honestly I didn't have high hopes going into the theater but it turned out to be an amazing movie, with a possibility for a great sequel.

XXX: The Return of Xander Cage: 6.9/10

Entertaining, gave it a 6.9 because I wanted to give a 7 but it's just not quite there. It had a Fast & Furious feel minus the cars.

Hidden Figures: 10/10

11.22.63 7/10

Eight episode Hulu mini series starring James Franco, based on Stephen King's book and produced by JJ Abrams. Franco goes back in time trying to investigate and prevent the assassination of JFK.

The premise is great but execution not as good. Really seems they made it for a lower brow audience and Franco isn't the most engaging lead. Expect a cheesier show than what the premise could provide.

All that said, it can be an entertaining watch. Canadian actress Sarah Gadon plays an adorable southern belle. The 1960's production design is amazing and includes many classic cars and fashion. The best part is that some viewers will fall down their own rabbit hole to seek out other media and books about the fascinating JFK assassination.

not bad at all.

hi-revs 02-05-2017 07:10 PM

Split 4/10.
Expected much more intensity and a good storyline into like with his multiple personality disorder. Movie felt rushed with events "just happening".

ilovebacon 02-05-2017 08:35 PM

max steel. great effects, story kinda corny, like it's for high school students but I do enjoy the story. so it's a 7/10

gilly 02-06-2017 07:03 AM

Passengers 7.5/10

Movie wasn't that bad. Didn't know why I heard many people say it wasn't good especially on rotten tomatoes.

I watched it last year and really enjoyed it a lot. I like how they changed the ending vs the book (I didn't read the book but I wikipediaed the difference) It's nice and tense but there were a few areas that were wonky/crazy

whitev70r 02-07-2017 05:21 PM

Silence 8.5/10
Thought provoking, complex, raw, and passionate. It's long though, >2.5 hrs ... get your money's worth I guess. Beautiful cinematography. Scorsese said that it was a movie that he's been wanting to make for 28 years.

dboy 02-09-2017 12:53 PM

Hacksaw Ridge 9.5/10

Superb acting and storyline.
