Interstellar 8/10

Sure, full of plot holes but I enjoyed it.

Roadrunner - 8/10 - Great movie, made be tear up at the end, albeit I'm a huge Bourdain fan.

The Green Knight - 8/10 - Somewhat artsy fantasy, amazing cinematography, story can be a little confusing, with some slow parts, but worth the watch.

That movie had a lot of bullshit but it blew me away the first time I saw it in theatres. I love it when I leave a theatre just thinking about what an incredible experience I had, both exciting and introspective. Unfortunately that rarely happens anymore, now that movies are mostly just theme park rides.

Speaking of which: Jungle Cruise: 0/10

I only watched half of it though

Hondaracer 08-25-2021 08:14 AM

Mare of Easttown on HBO on demand, 8/10

Kate Winslet is such a fantastic actress, I’ve watched so many movies and shows with her in them where, at first I’m kinda like ehhh is this really her role..then she completely nails it. No difference with this series. Definitely binge worthy and very engaging

I enjoyed it with the kids. i'd give it an 8/10

Tthought it was decent. both of their chemistry was OK and the corny jokes were just on point and it stopped.

very pirates of the carribean feel but during the pandemic.. it was a good watch.

Watched the 14 min clip of Ben Kingsley The mandarin.

It's pretty cool to tie in with disney marvel universe.

Felt like a plagiarized Indiana Jones movie with a female lead. But kids and I enjoyed it nonetheless.

That was the exact feeling I got after I watched Inception in theatres. I've watched the film twice more since then and it blows me away each time.

holy F, finally see a movie with Maggie Q as a lead.
brainless movie. I gotta say, Michael K did a solid in this movie.
A mix of hollywood movie ideas in a blender, but decent watch.

Woudl recommend.

Kid 90 - A great nostalgic look-back on the 90's through past videos recorded by Soleil Moon Frye and current conversations with actors from that time. A neat watch if you dug that era.

Stillwater by Matt damon.
I didn't think it was a 5 min standing ovation worthy at the end of a film festival.
Honestly, it started off as a suspense of dad with daughter visiting her in prison to BAM, sharp turn to dad living a life in France. Then all of a sudden 20 mins of peace and calm back to mystery...
Definitely not movie worthy.

He was playing a rough neck and all he did was flannel shirt + yes madam every 2 sentence.

good old taiwanese movies with their onions. They do make decent movies.
This was a korean remake and it's solid It's in full taiwanse so you gotta read the sub titles.

Guy is a loan shark falling for a girl who is too cool for shit but got into debt.
solid acting by the guy playing the loan shark. Girl felt totally emotion-less until the movie flips in the middle.

I enjoyed it but you gotta be familiar with asian / romantic type movies. No diff than getting used to watching Jap / korean sitcomes. Takes a different perspective to appreciate.

I agree, the movie was definitely not what I expected.

I figured it would be more about Amanda Knox, and the corruption behind the trial and conviction.

Not a feelgood story about an American out of his element learning French culture, and insert the cute kid/love story angle.

Saw Shang-Chi, I went into it with REALLY high expectations because everyone I knew was hyping it up and saying how legendary it was. "GOAT Marvel movie"

7/10
Came out thinking that it's barely a Top 5 Marvel movie.
Better MCU movies IMO (in no particular order):
Iron Man 1
Thor 3
Infinity War
Black Panther

I've also watched a quite a few Tony Leung movies in the past so I can't say this was his best performance, guy is solid. All the CBC's are "blown away" haha

Folks have been really digging it, all my friends are so hype for it. Tony Leung has been trending on twitter here since the movie came out, everyone raving about him, fans and non fans alike.

I could be wrong, but it seems like they tried to cater to the Chinese diaspora around the world with this movie, which is why your CBC friends are so blown away by it. Which is interesting because Disney usually caters directly to mainland Chinese audience with their other Marvel movies, and here they have a Chinese storyline that seems to do the opposite. At least that's how it seems based on the reaction - I haven't seen it yet...

I'll wait to watch it at home, as my patience for MCU movies has really dropped a lot since the Avengers movies. They just take themselves way too seriously for my liking, and this looks like another one of those. The new Spiderman looks pretty neat though

Obsideon 09-08-2021 08:21 PM

That's why it's still not being released in China lol

6793026 09-08-2021 09:49 PM

if you ever get a chance to see Tony's interviews .... he is ONE BORING MONO tone dude.

Being a true introvert, he really did think he was going to play a huge villain and obviously that didn't happen. he had to pivot and adjust his expectations.
Few funny stories:
- he did not expect food was catered and readily available but once you're working for those 11 hrs, there are no lunch breaks.
- he was always on the set, cause this is ultimately his first 'western' movie, he was there looking at all scenes even though he had nothing to do with that scene.

I agree with your suggestion that it seems like Disney is trying to cater to the general overseas Chinese population (ie. Chinese outside of Mainland China) this time with Shang Chi, and a small part of me keep thinking back to how Disney might have learned a lesson with casting Liu Yifei last time as Mulan, and how the backlash came both from the international front as well as from China as well. With the way Mulan turned out, it almost seemed like only non-Chinese people enjoyed the movie.

CW is doing a similar thing with the Kung Fu reboot series. We watch it and... It's bad but good in a way? But it's getting great ratings (by CW standards) so got renewed for season 2.

6793026 09-09-2021 07:20 AM

WOw, how long has it been since I first watched this? was it back 21+ yrs ago? danggg

SkinnyPupp 09-09-2021 07:25 AM

None of that made any sense to me... But the story is pretty open ended so...

I actually watched the first Matrix again not long ago... A lot of it has aged very poorly, but overall it was a great sci fi movie, and a very important one. But this just looks weird, and not in a good way.

When I first started watching this I thought it was one of those stupid fake trailer videos where they compile old movies to make it look like a new movie. Especially when NPH shows up in the first 10 seconds.

white rocket 09-09-2021 10:34 AM

New Matrix will just be trip down memory lane; with scenes jogging your memory of the first one (and 2 and 3 as well). That should be the expectation. I LOVED the first one when it came out but was a bit disappointed with each sequel. All in all it was a great trilogy though. Hoping the writing and story doesn't completely suck but not really expecting anything groundbreaking.

I'd pay retail for this and see it in a VIP theatre.
