I agree. Soho is garbage!!!

Verdasco 09-21-2016 09:40 AM

Tried soho a lot when my family had a business around that hood.

Food wasn't that great, nothing appealed me to go back, i know tons of ppl from university groups that go there all the time but i dont see why its so great

Obsideon 09-21-2016 09:58 PM

Yeah I noticed that too, I go there every once in a while because it's near my house and it's open late but it's definitely nothing special.
There are always random groups, like dodgeball teams, volleyball teams, university clubs, whatnot.

^ I wouldn't have gone back after the first time..

Went to Tai Sho Ken

My favourite ramen place.

Got the regular tsukemen dipping ramen wth the hot stones and noodles served hot. This never disappoints me, and no line up past 730. They're specialized in tsukemen in Japan, not sure if they're even affiliated. Santouka makes a better bowl of soupy ramen but screw the line up.

The Keg (Langley)

Probably the worse keg i've been to.

Asked for my steak to be Chicago rare... got Chicago medium.. twice.
Twice baked potato had that burnt taste to it also..

5/10

Verdasco 09-23-2016 10:26 AM

Although I am not a big fan of the keg, never will be (prefer elsewhere for steaks)

going anywhere out of downtown for that chain specifically is asking to get terrible food.... the standards just drop ten fold when stepping out of the downtown core

Willingdon/HWY1 location is about the best outside of downtown.
Never had a bad experience there.

What are you doing asking for Chicago-Rare in Langley of all places?

That's like going to Applebee's and asking for Gremolata and Amuse Bouche with your steak course.

Hondaracer 09-23-2016 02:12 PM

the Guildford location used to be pretty good actually.. didnt end up renewing their lease though

punkwax 09-23-2016 03:05 PM

Old North Delta location used to be good.. not sure if they're still there though?

South Surrey has been good to us.. I find ordering off the appies menu (inside the small drink menu) is the way to go. Steaks/Prime rib at the Keg are good but the sides suuuuuck..

I'll take Cactus over the Keg any day, myself.

Armind 09-23-2016 03:17 PM

Eh, a free meal is a free meal lol OpieOP

Boss took us to the S. Surrey Keg last year and they overcooked all of our steaks. Only one of us got a proper steak...the one who ordered well done. LOL. My twice baked potato was bland and cold. Apparently the owner there also owns the Ironwood location which is not a bad location but +1 for the Willingdon location. All this steak talk reminds me of my last restaurant....HYS!!!!

GF took me there last week for my bday. Appys was cheesy bread. Soft and melt in your mouth evenly spread cheese. 8/10 for what I remember as bigger portions. Next was the garlic butter escargot. Good sized snails but a lack of mushrooms (I feel it adds to the flavor) nothing special but still quite good 8/10. She ordered the tenderloin medallions. Good sized medallions proper char and seasoning. I only had a couple bites and the medium rare was to perfection. 9/10 (she said they could've put some more of the sauce they had on the plate) I got the beef wellington. Excellent. Blows Black and Blue out of the water as they couldn't do a medium rare cook for me. Puff pastry was flaky as fuck. Filet mignon medium rare was so damn melt in your mouth tender and paired so good with the Foi Gras. The middle looked rare (which isn't a problem to me regardless) but when I touched it the center was quite warm. 9/10 as the plating was pretty boring (its how I would've plated it at home lol) I felt there was tiny little things here and there that could've made every dish 10/10 but compared to any other proper steak restaurant in Vancouver it's IMO definitely the best around especially the cook on there meats. 8.5/10 I would always go back considering the last time I went to HYS was like 15 yrs ago and 15 yrs later it still met my expectations and I love the ambience there.

Soho Tea Room

Been here a few times. Inconsistent food.

1st time I ordered "Taiwanese Beef Noodle"... it came out as beef UDON ... and tasted bland. Super weird, pretty disappointed.
2nd time Beef Noodle - It was spicy which was good, and they finally changed the noodle to "ho fun" which was acceptable but still not really authentic beef noodle.
3rd time Beef noodle - Soup was bland, beef was tough, same ho fun.
Probably never getting beef noodle there anymore lol.

The spiked bbt is a nice novel idea, the prices are pretty good for adding shots.

Last visit service was non-existent.
We were basically serving ourselves. Around 9pm, only a couple tables were seated. Stood at the door for few min... nobody came, had to seat ourselves, 5min past, nobody even came within eye contact of our table. We had to grab our own menus. The guy shows up, sighs like he hates his life, takes our orders. We had to go get our own eating utensils lol. That was like literally the only time I saw him the entire meal. Another guy brought out our food and we had to walk up to the counter to get the bill and pay.

3/10, not sure why this place looks busy later at night when I drive by. Lots of recreational sports "teams" seem to congregate there.

Definitely not worth going there. I rather spend same/less at Aberdeen food-court and get better tasting food with decent quantity than SOHO. I went one night around 930pm and ordered their mini set meal (baked seafood pasta if I recall) and it came out to be $13-15 my bill, the portion was small as those frozen food microwavable dinner. Their customer service is lazy as heck, even when service is dead at night. They bring us our drinks at the end of the meal...Not to be a jerk, I just tipped them what they "deserved".

Argo Cafe, Ontario Street. Was on Gotta Eat Here Show. http://www.argocafe.ca/

When you go to a retro ghetto diner like that you expect either great food, or huge portions, or great value.

Food - 7/10
Portions - 7/10
Value - 6/10

Everything there is like $13.95/$14.95 ... three people walked out with tax and tips, $50. A bit underwhelming.

outside of your one off places that might bang out an amazing steak here and there, Hy's is imo the best steak house in Van.

Seoul Doogbaegi, west of Knight on 1031 Kingsway. https://www.zomato.com/vancouver/seo...ant-kensington

Food 9/10
Value 9/10
Portions 8/10
Ambience 6.5/10

4 people and the bill came out to $63 tax and tips. Had fried dumplings, seafood pancake, Bibimbap, Bul go gee beef, and a seafood tofu soup and some leftover to take home. A bit of a hole in the wall but the good kind, pretty impressed.

unit 09-26-2016 07:21 AM

probably about 5 years go, but 4 of us went to the keg in yaletown.
my rare steak was done closer to medium, and my friend had a hair in his food (after he already started)
they sent both back pretty graciously, and 10 minutes later we were served again and they comped both meals.

Armind 09-26-2016 08:53 AM

TexxBurger
Double bacon cheeseburger
Freshly made, the burger was still steaming hot when I ate it at home.
Amount of fries is more than enough for one (regular size)

8.5/10

sonick 09-26-2016 09:16 AM

Hy's - ??/10

Went for my bachelor party. Was not entirely in a clear state of mind to enjoy it to the fullest, hence no rating. However, my experience with the dishes I had:

Steak Tartare - 3/10
Way over-seasoned with worcheshire sauce and tabasco, no balance at all.

Porterhouse - 6/10
Very flavorful and fatty, but was a good medium/medium-well when it was asked to be done at medium rare.

6o4__boi 09-26-2016 09:27 AM

i always find Steak places hit and miss
Over the years, I've learned that if I want damn good steak, I gotta make that shit myself.

Though I've gotta say I've never had a bad experience at the Keg on Willingdon, that's usually my family's go-to place for steak dinners. I've learned to avoid their baked potatoes...cus honestly, even Wendy's is better.

bcrdukes 09-26-2016 09:47 AM

Keg on Willingdon has been the most consistent for me without any bad experiences. Even when there was a mix-up of the slightest, meals were comped and we were always taken care of by management.

Expresso 09-26-2016 10:05 AM

Typically franchised Keg locations have varying consistency. The ones that are owned by corporate are usually pretty solid for what it is.

Always go twiced baked always.

6793026 09-26-2016 11:14 AM

I've heard it somewhere: Steaks are the most sent back menu items in a restaurant.

westopher 09-26-2016 11:17 AM

Not surprising, since half of the people that order them don't even know what they fucking ordered. You can tell me you want your steak cooked more, or less, but don't fucking tell me that your medium rare isn't medium rare, because there is this magical thing called temperature that a thermometer can tell what it is way better than your eyes in a dimly lit restaurant can.
