My family and I were regulars there. Agreed it was one of the best xlb in town. The first time we ate there, the boss lady saw the xlb sticking to the paper which resulted in ripping and spilling the soup, she gave us a new batch and apologized. That was the amount of integrity they had with their xlb's.

Their hand shredded pastry, spicy wontons and fried porkchop tan tan noodles were also must haves for us.

I was pretty sad the day we went there and saw a new lady at the counter. Everything went downhill quickly, but we still continued going.

The awning for the place is still there, despite already going through a few restaurant changes :alone:

Obsideon 08-11-2017 11:20 PM

I also went there and saw a younger lady working there instead of the usual super friendly older lady I always saw and the short haired woman wrapping the XLB's...

Decided to give it a try anyway, the prices went up drastically, and they were focusing on serving braised spicy fish which was priced $30-40 and up. Food was not as good.

I decided to ask them if they knew what the previous owners were up to and if they opened somewhere else, they said they had no idea.

I am still super bummed, the prices were super reasonable and most of their dishes were delicious! The crispy fish on rice was amazing, the spicy duck pot was hella spicy which was awesome. I've also never had any other tan tan noodle come close to theirs in flavour and texture... man just talking about it makes me sad lol.

They kept the english name, I think so they don't have to pay to change the business license, but they changed the chinese name. I think I drove by last week and the windows were papered up, guess the new place didn't survive?

The wife and some friends tried out "The Fat cow and oyster bar" in Langley I would give it a 0/10

Pretty much anything on the menu was out...and I am talking about appys, mains, and desserts.... was thoroughly disappointed and would not recommend.

Also for most people who see on the menu "lobster roll" would think maybe it would be a roll/pastry of some sort with maybe I don't know lobster in it. Lets just say when the wife got it was a bunch of fucking crackers with some BS seasonings on it. With a side order of small jar with lobster/mayo mix. Tell me where roll is at in this appy? lol

Also everything was waaaaaay over priced for what you got. The owner was our server and she was not the friendly type that's for sure.

bcrdukes 08-12-2017 10:15 AM

Perhaps the name of the restaurant "The Fat Cow" is a dead giveaway of who and what the owner is. :p

Nabatron 08-12-2017 10:50 AM

^lol exactly!

I think there has been 3 restaurant changes since The Place 2.0

After 2.0, I believe, was the spicy cuisine that you mentioned.

Haven't tried it since 2.0, since my family isn't overly fond of super spicy foods lol

LUPO

never thought it would be good cause i thought it was a hole in the wall place but I was surprised.

1) Burrata cheese was great
2) bread + olive oil was $4
3) carpaccio was decent
4) Sable fish & linguine Vongole was really good too.

atmosphere was great, people were super friendly; air con made the place super cool and a chilled place to go. Would go again.

Thai New West

Decided to try this place in my gf's new neighborhood along Columbia in New West.

Food was just mediocre at best. The real deal breaker was the smaller than usual dinner portions and overpriced dishes when compared to other places.

I had the curry with chicken - $16 with no rice. that's another $3 for a small bowl
Gf got the stir fried noodles $16 as well and small portions

Took us a while for the server to come back to us to get water refills.
Overall a 5/10 . Won't return and will just check other places along the street

Famoso on Commercial, north of 1st.
8/10, nice Neopolitan style pizza (Don Andreas very creative and good), other selection on menu like sandwiches, mac n cheese are all good as well.

The tomato bisque is a must have, I don't even like tomato soup normally but the one here ... I'm hooked.

Longtail kitchen (New West Quay)
their chicken wings were legit, NOT spicy like Phenom Phenh but very very closely just the same in epicness.

thai food done right, great little place. Seriously, the Quay changed so much I don't recognize it at all.

Liquid_o2 08-14-2017 10:23 AM

Longtail is solid every time I go there. I could eat those chicken wings all day! Pad thai si really good as well.

Cocoa 70. A bit pricey, but the hot chocolate was good quality. Chocolate fondu made a fun date night :) 7.5/10

One is Singaporean style Hainanese chicken, the other is HK style. No comparison sorry.

Chickpea restaurant on Main
(vegan food)

6.5/10
- Food was okay.. considering it being vegan
- Drinks were overpriced to hell. I think a pitcher was like $30+, friend order this basic Gin/tonix with lemon.. It cost $10

I don't eat a lot of vegan food.. so that could be a factor. Wouldn't go back

Was in Vancouver to visit. Made a short trip to Kelowna and my wife took me to Okanagan Street food. 8/10

Great large portions decent prices. The highlight was their duck fat fries... chunky cheese curds and thick cut bacon. Might have been the best poutine I've had so far. Mobile phone pic doesn't do it justice.

Did anyone else notice the portion of the Spicy Salmon/Tuna combo at Sushi Garden on lougheed got smaller?

Speaking of Spicy combos, Kimu Sushi on boundary and 29th has the best value I have come across.

It's 16 spicy salmon rolls and chunks of salmon, whereas Sushi Garden, it's 8 rolls of rolls, 8 rolls of cucumber rolls, and chunks of salmon.

guurl 09-05-2017 12:00 PM

^ I thought Kimu sushi's rolls were really small. I was disappointed
Food was good though

dapperfied 09-05-2017 12:04 PM

Zakkushi on Main
9.5/10

It's been so long since I've been back. Food is always damn good.

Just missing their summer pitcher specials :okay:

The Canadian Brewhouse & Grill
3/10

Poutine, nacho and battered prawns.
Food was meh, it tastes salty after a few bites. Nothing special.

Fortune City
2/10

Set menu dinner, decent food.
It was fuckin' hot in there and had at least half of the restaurant.
Friend turned up the A/C and the boss bitched at her. Cheap fucks.

Now that you mentioned it, yeah I recall they were quite small. But the still better than cucumber rolls.

Zakkushi on Main has always been solid. Although last time I went was in May and found their quality to have come down a bit (not too much) compared to a few years ago. 7.5-8/10

And what's with their bill splitting policy? I went with a party of 10+ and they were only able to split the bill 3 way...

Trilussa Pizza on Main - Their salmon pizza is to die for! Each time I take a bite into it it's like an orgasm in my mouth. 9/10 would bang I mean eat again BrokeBack
