I should note first that I don't know much about the tattoo 'scene' in vancouver (or anywhere else really). I haven't even been back for 3 years. All I know is what I glean from blogs, facebook, forums, etc.

If you're willing to travel, Bob Tyrrell is by far the best portrait artist, IMO. He travels to a lot of shows, and is actually in Calgary quite a bit (he'll be there in October, so you better email him now if you want). He was actually in China a few years ago, and I contacted him but unfortunately I was too late and was unable to get an appointment :(

For colour, again you'll have to travel, but Nikko Hurtado does the best colour portraits I have seen. He doesn't travel as much, so you'd have to go to LA. I'm sure his waiting list is a year long at least. BTW if you "LIKE" this facebook page, you can enter to win a free tattoo by Nikko.

There are other good portrait artists (and make no mistake, you NEED to go to an artists that specializes in portraits to get a good one) and maybe some locals. But from I've seen, those guys are the best of the best, IMO :)

Around Vancouver Rob Hope was prob the best but he recently decided to stop taking any portrait work. I guess he got burned out on doing so many.

Donovan at Lady Luck in Surrey does some really nice ones

I have seen Jesse Wark at Blackwater do a few really nice ones.

Not sure, never asked. You could email him and ask, if he has time for you then I'm sure he won't mind telling you his price. I'm sure it's on the high side, like $200-300 an hour at least. But even that doesn't mean much... Everything I've heard of him is that he is a super nice down to earth guy, and seemed that way in my correspondence with him at least.

that Bob Tyrell is the only quality id be happy with.. unsure of my intentions but i'll definately be going to somone like that if i get it done, if nothing else than to just get the potrait done and have somone else finish the sleeve etc.

both.usually when u get a tattoo theres some sort of meaning, but its also gotta look goood right

dlo 08-22-2011 12:31 PM

gotta have some kind of meaning to get a tattoo, looks matter too, but meaning outweighs looks IMO

Vansterdam 08-22-2011 01:18 PM

I totally disagree with the notion of tattoos require a meaning. I have a lower leg 'sock'. It's an Orc. What does it mean? Orc's are badass. I have an Admiral Ackbar tattoo. Biggest meaning I get from it is that I'm a nerd who loves Star Wars and hilarious tattoos. I have a goldfish. Reason I got it? Cost $20. Kraken on my back. Just like the Orc, it's badass.

Big J will be doing my next tattoo

SkinnyPupp 08-23-2011 09:02 PM

Exactly. If a tattoo has some significant meaning to you, that's great. But they don't require a STORY TO TELL or anything like that. If your tattoos do have STORIES TO TELL that is great too.

The point is, get a tattoo for whatever reason you want. :)
