Thanks man, do you guys know how Langara courses are? I think my registration is going to be quite late, so I won't be able to get into the section/course I want. At UBC, people drop out of courses in the first week so you can eventually get into the course/section you want. Is Langara like that? Or is it full when it's full?

BaoTurbo 06-26-2011 07:49 PM

Courses are usually small so professors will be glad to answer your questions on a general basis. All you have to do is just ask. As for your registration time, you can check it in MyLangara after you login. Registration (tab button)-->Activate my registration time-->Registration time will be in red and in 24hr format. Registration started on the 20th and I already registered my courses on the 24th. Registration has also a time limit from 8am-6pm I think and the system will shut down so you can't make any changes.

As for courses you register and people tend to drop them before they take the class since our withdrawal date is after the first midterm usually. By that time if you were to drop your course and take another when the midterm is over for the class, is pretty unlogical so we people drop them either before they take the class or during the first weeks of school.

Thanks again man, really helpful! So in other words, classes that have like 7 people on the waitlist, I will eventually be able to get in right? Does Langara have semesters? I've tried making "sample timetables" and it doesn't exactly specify which "semester" it's in (if it has one).

Thanks bao, PS what are you currently studying at Langara? :)

i just asked the same question about the waitlists last page and 2 ppl answered it. And yes, I think every or most big post secondary colleges/universities have sample timetables which you can configure

Zoidberg 06-26-2011 08:25 PM

^Thanks, are there semesters in Langara? E.g term 1 term 2?

BaoTurbo 06-26-2011 09:01 PM

Sample timetables are chosen when you first press anything that you try to look for, then it will set everything automatically to the chosen semester. Langara is a semester school just like SFU. We have 3 terms and entrance to the college is open on all 3. 7 people on the waitlist is most likely since registration just started and people will start changing around their own schedules. If you end up at like 3-5th position, there is still a chance if you go to the class and ask the teacher to manually insert you into the class and he will overide the system. People who are on the waitlist and don't go to class are usually crossed off or if they are really close and are just waiting to get in.

I'm taking business courses in the transfer program. I take whatever interests me and so far all the business courses have popped up to be the most interesting when I register. But I have taken a variety of elective courses as well.

Zoidberg 06-27-2011 01:34 AM

Thanks man, really appreciate it. Where does it say what semester it is? For example, I'm registering for Fall 2011 courses (starting this September) and it doesn't say term 1, term 2, etc? Where can I find that? I'm confusing myself by taking 7 different courses and not knowing which term they belong in. At ubc, it showed for example Econ 2296 Term 1 (Sept till Dec) or Econ 2996 Term 2 (Jan till April).
Thanks :D

All of the WWW are online stuff through Blackboard, it's a similar system to WebCT which some high schools used. There's probably reading, assignments, and maybe quizzes/tests on there, but if there's an in-class portion to it your instructor may have those in class.

Electives that are easy are usually any of the 1st year Anthropology, Art History, Asian Studies, Design, History, Nutrition, Philosophy, Sociology, and language courses.

If business courses count as electives for you, you might want to look into that, they're quite fun and easy. The other courses I've listed above are more like you go to class do your work and leave. I find that you get to talk and know people more in the business courses.

Anybody know how planning courses for different semesters work at Langara? For example, I want to take 4 core courses in Fall 2011 (Sept-Dec) and then my other 3 core courses in Winter 2012 (Jan-April). How can I plan which four courses to take this coming Fall (Sept- Dec) if I don't know if the other 3 courses are offered in the Winter (Jan-April) semester?
Thanks guys.

You dont. lol thats the joy of Langara. You won't know what is being offered until sometime during Fall semester. When they release schedule books and registration times.

:fuuuuu:

Any registration advice for me? :D Planning to take second year business courses for university transfer.

By the way, Langara's helpline is horrible, they seem like they want you to just shut the f*** up..

Phuck_RS 06-27-2011 01:23 PM

Where's BaoTurbo? :alone:

Hey TOS'd, yeah it is my first semester at Langara, but technically I'm in my second year. I didn't do well enough to get from UBC Arts first year to Commerce second year (got a 75% core avg). I'm planning to do (Year 2) of the Langara transfer program.

If you or anyone could offer me some registration advice that would be great (how to plan which to take for first sem and second sem, easy electives ,etc).

dignatas 06-27-2011 06:20 PM

lol found out my math 11 mark is not in my transcript. Went to langara with my transcripts I received. Denied the moment i got there because it was unofficial. Went back to high school and bought an official one for 5$. Went to langara and waited a huge line to the registrars office again.... now my stats 1124 class is waitlisted to 5 and I have to wait another day to register..... fucking drove to langara and back to high school and back to langara.. FML

2 waitlisted courses but in top 5... :alone:

Have you tired going to a course planning session? http://www.langara.bc.ca/student-ser...-sessions.html
There's also open counselor hours at the office.

I know some people that spoke to a counselor to help them plan 2-3 semesters in advance when they were planning to change programs and such.

I know for 1st/2nd year business there's a program outline near the business instructor's offices that tells you which course if offered in which semesters, (sadly there's no concrete guide for 3rd/4th year).

If you talk to your program head or the head of which ever course you're planning to take, they might be able help you more.

Try looking for their e-mails on the website directly, unless they're away for the summer. They usually get back to you within 3 days or so.

I find the actual office and registrar's office are the lest helpful people in the school, especially the registrar's office. I try not to deal with them unless necessary. They give off such an unfriendly and unhelpful vibe every time I've had to go there.

dignatas 06-27-2011 08:39 PM

i went to the course planning website and it was ok.. taught out semester based schools work and GPAs because high schools don't use it. Didn't talk too much about actual courses though

Meowjin 06-27-2011 09:55 PM

so im taking comp sci as electives right now, while I finish my last of my nursing prereq's... any fun?

If you take Second year at Langara I'm guesssing the plan is to boost your GPA higher from 75%. Take GPA boosters? Business Computer Applications is a GPA booster for sure. The rest depends if you want to boost your GPA but have all these useless courses towards your major once you are in Commerce

dyan 06-27-2011 10:49 PM
