My buddy was wondering does anyone know what happens when your placed on langara academic probation and the follow semester you don't fully meet the requirements to remove the status? (he's just had a rough semester) since he doesn't want to take 3 semesters off, thanks guys

Academic Suspension

Students on academic probation who do not achieve the minimum academic standard in their next semester will be placed on academic suspension.

Students on a first academic suspension will not be permitted to register for the following three semesters. Students returning after a first academic suspension will be restricted to eleven credits and will be on academic probation when they re-register at the College. In career programs and arts and science limited enrolment programs, the Program Coordinator or Department Chair will decide on the course load limit.

Students on academic suspension may return to their studies before the completion of the normal suspension period after successful completion of academic remediation. Refer to Appendix 1 of the Langara College Academic Standing – Academic Probation and Academic Suspension Policy.

To achieve good standing, students returning after a first academic suspension must achieve the minimum academic standard in their first semester following the academic suspension. Students who do not achieve good standing will be placed on a second academic suspension, which will result in a longer stand-out period and will require an application in writing to the Registrar for re-admission to the College. Re-admission is not automatic and not guaranteed.

See the Langara College Academic Standing – Academic Probation and Academic Suspension Policy for additional information on academic suspensions.

He should've withdrawn then, it's post-secondary, not high school where they let you off on everything. Either that or accept his fate.
How he get into Academic Probation, and chose to continue with another semester into Academic Probation is beyond me though. :rukidding:

Book an appointment with a counselor at Coquitlam College. They will always find a way to "make it work", and you will be able to transfer to university within two to three semester time. Why not give it a shot?

Pretty sure he can appeal the suspension. There's a form by the registrar's office or he can talk to a counsellor and they'll help him out with it.

edit: oops looked like simplycomplex already posted it. Easier if he just talks to the counsellor and they'll walk him through it and help him with paperwork.

thanks guys for the advice! buddy will meet with the counselor this week to discuss his issue and hopefully he can appeal for a suspension in time for his summer semester

misterblu 04-18-2012 07:50 PM

No, only university will look at the better one but langara will look at it as 2 different courses. So if you failed and retook its still going to show up on the Langara transcript only

JayEch 04-18-2012 08:01 PM

ubc looks at the average as well. sfu looks at the better one for up to 2 retaken courses.

Mike Oxbig 04-18-2012 08:03 PM

UBC look at the last 30 credit (last 10 courses)

Quote:

Average required to be considered for admission to Year 3

After you finish the second year of a Commerce Transfer Program at a BC College, you must meet a minimum overall average of 2.50 (calculated on the last 30 credits of your coursework) and a minimum core average of 2.50 on all your Commerce courses (including ECON 201 and 301 or their equivalents).

misterblu 04-18-2012 08:05 PM

so if i'm looking to transfer to ubc/sfu, they will look at the higher one? thanks

Mike Oxbig 04-18-2012 08:37 PM

yes
