Clean hit.
Setting the tone for the prospects to lay it all out on the line. When you see the big boys come out to play, it provides that much more of a drive to play hard.

If I was Phaneuf, I wouldn't bust up my hand pounding on some prospect.

d1 09-18-2009 08:27 AM

Seems Cody Hodgson will be suiting up for tonight's game!

7seven 09-18-2009 08:32 AM

Keep in mind this is the same Phaneuf who got leveled by Dustin Brown with a clean hit also, and what does he do, two hand slashes Brown. Phaneuf of all people should know if you dish out hits like that, be prepared to square up or deal with retribution.

Geez why didn't he use his "cheapo" move on Richter in Game 4 then?

Nice! :D Are the Canucks the only team with guys and girls on their "ice team"?

The NYI player that jumped off the ice after the hit - don't you get an automatic suspension for that?

Edit: Oops, jumped off the bench and onto the ice is what I meant.

Not too sure...

I hope it is but it isn't listed here:
http://canucks.nhl.com/team/app?page...e&service=page

But then again, yesterday's game wasn't listed either but we all know it was on sportsnet.

So your guess is as good as mine. It will be streaming for sure but streaming games are terrible and is a last resort.

Sportsnet said it was on tv tonight. They said this just before the Nuck's game telecast was over.
But a check of the tv listings show nothing for tonight.

murd0c 09-18-2009 10:02 AM

Ya yesterday I checked the listing for tonight and sats game and it wasn't listed either. I'm really wondering myself.

Somebody obviously dropped the ball. Whether that person is on the Canuck's camp or the TV Networks', who knows. Hope that guy is severly reprimanded.

Yes he did.

New York Islanders forward Pascal Morency has been suspended indefinitely pending a hearing early next week.

Morency left the Islanders' bench and charged Flames defenceman Dion Phaneuf in the second period of Thurday night's 5-4 Flames win, after Phaneuf leveled Islanders' forward Kyle Okposo.

Morency was issued a game misconduct after the small fracas on the ice.

Okposo, who was taken off the ice on a strecher, is said to have a mild concussion, but no other physical damage from the check.

why did h come off the bench throw off his gloves and then challenge? strike 3 wqas when he came off the bench...he should have known this...and just speared Phaneuf...I fucking hate him,...he's a bitch..

he jumped off the bench and immediately dropped his gloves to go hunt down phaneuf. the league isn't stupid to believe it was a line change.

that being said, the hit was a clean hit. was it necessary? absolutely not. phaneuf didn't have to fucking crush the guy, just bump into him to make the point clear: KEEP YOUR HEAD UP. this just makes people hate phaneuf more and the flames in general.

at least fluery had a good night! what a story to go from rock bottom back to NHL form. i still remember watching him when i was a kid in calgary, amazing player!

Phaneuff didn't crush him. The severity of the hit was the cause of the velocity of the play. At the speed Okposo was going, even a standing Phaneuff would result in a big collision.

I'm surprised at the outcry this particular incident. But I think the outcry has more to do with it being Phaneuff rather than the hit itself.

Tegra_Devil 09-18-2009 01:59 PM

i think it was a fine hit..

i dont look down at phaneuf for it...i dont look down on the flames for it...

that is what he is known for...big hits, whether they be questionable or not...he is know for his hits...the end...get over it...

every kid is taught to keep their heads up anyways, this guy screwed up and paid for it.

Just to clarify something, I know its hard to see on the shitty youtube quality video, but if you watch the live tv feed or look closely, you will notice Okposo gets shoved/pushed from behind by Dawes which knocks him off balance and the momentum carrying his head down.

That really is my main issue, besides Phaneuf being a chicken shit, is that Okposo was already checked by Dawes, and there was another Flames D man covering him and Phaneuf still feels its necessary, in an exhibition game, with his roster spot safe, to cross the ice leaving his D position to hit a player in an extremely vulnerable position.

I feel for Okposo with this though. Unless your Bure or Gaborik, not a lot of players can skate full speed + stickhandle with their head COMPLETELY head up...

And I can tell, Okposo had his head low because he was trying to outrun his backchecker who was all over him; and it would be wrong for Phaneuff to ease up on forward attacking at full-bore.

It's the unfortunate part of hockey.

Harvey Specter 09-18-2009 02:23 PM

God I hate Phaneuff but I'll be the first one to admit that he is one hell of a player who can change the tone of the game with one big hit or a fight.

7seven 09-18-2009 02:30 PM

This quote by Biron basically sums up how I feel

Quote:

"If you're going to do that, at least respond to the challengers after that," said Biron. "I've never seen Scott Stevens back down to a fight after he hit a guy on the blue-line coming across. If you're going to play that way, then be the whole package and play that way, and that's where we had a big problem with that."

Yeah I wouldn't take too much from that quote. The hockey culture is very pussified right now. I prefer the good ol' hockey that when you're the recipient of a good body check, your avenue of return is to also respond with a good body check of your own; Like what Shirokov did.

Nowadays, NHL players will fight for just about as shallow a reason as clean body check or scoring too much in a game, all because they don't like it. Whatever happened to responding with bodychecks and goals in kind? If you can't achieve it in the same game, there's 82 games in a season to work on it.

Fighting should really only belong to reasons of putting dirty players in place like: like headhunting and or players who slashing with intent to injure.
