Hank now 4 points up on Ovie for the points race, at 78. Thornton is falling off the map at 68. He's also only two assists ahead of Hank.

We also still have three of the top five in plus/minus - Burrows +30, Ehrhoff and Hank at +27.

Danny now in a 3-way tie for the lead in game-winning goals (three, tied with Malone and Heatley)

And yes, Monster is the league leader for SHG :D

These Canucks...even down three, you don't think they're out of it. They've come from two or three down more than just a few times this season.

Feels good to have one of the best lines in hockey again. This time we got goaltending to go with it!

Dion Phaneuf trade to the Toronto Maple Leafs!

Quote:

Two teams in dire need of a shakeup have done just that.

The Calgary Flames have traded defenceman Dion Phaneuf, forward Fredrik Sjostrom, and prospect defenceman Keith Aulie to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for forwards Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman, Jamal Mayers and defenceman Ian White.

The Maple Leafs and Flames have been working on the components of this blockbuster for a week to ten days, but sources say the details of the deal didn't fall into place until late last night.

"[Phaneuf is] a warrior. He's got a cannon for a shot," explained Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke on Sunday. "He plays the game hard and I want players who play the game hard because they're hard to play against."

Phaneuf has two goals over his last three games and is signed through the 2013-14 season ($6.5 million per). He had 18:49 TOI last night, only the third time this month he's been under 20 minutes in a game. The big defenceman has 10 goals and 12 assists to go with a minus-3 rating over his 55 games.

Sjostrom has played 46 games with one goal and five assists for Calgary this season. Aulie was drafted in the fourth round, 116th overall of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. He had spent this season with the Abbotsford Heat of the AHL.

Hagman has 20 goals and 13 assists, while Stajan has 16 goals and 25 assists, each over 55 games this season. Both players have a minus-3 rating. Mayers had expressed interest in being traded earlier in January. He had two goals, six assists and 78 penalty minutes over his 44 games with the Maple Leafs this season. White had nine goals, 17 assists and a plus-1 rating over his 56 games.

The Flames were mired in its worst slump (0-6-3) since an 11-game losing streak in 1986 before getting on the winning side of the tracks on Saturday night with a 6-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers in the Battle of Alberta.

The Maple Leafs are coming off a dramatic loss to the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday evening, giving up a three-goal first period lead before falling 5-3. With the loss, coupled with Carolina's 4-2 victory over Chicago, Toronto now sits 29th in the NHL standings.

The Hurricanes and Leafs are tied in points with 45 but Carolina is ahead because of more wins.

wow.... what's sutter thinking? trying to give up his playoff berth?

Hagman Stajan Mayers and White, Losing to Van last night, next think you know they're going get owned by Van alot more

MR_BIGGS 01-31-2010 08:24 AM

This deal works well for Calgary. They have a good goaltender and still have a number 1 dman in Jay bouwmeester and have gotten rid of a virus in the dressing room.. And now they have added some depth. We will see....

We'll see alright, see them keep spiraling out of a playoff birth.

i feel really good about it....this is a great deal for us...hagman is a consistant goal scorer....and stajan can really work in calgary...he will develop in calgary to what he was supposed to be...and white has a lot of heart...

rumours are dion has been disrupting the lockerroom to much...and has been a big problem during this slup....i like the trade and am all for it...

next i see jokinen going...possibly with the current new comers for Ilya Kovalchuk....sutter isnt an idiot...something more is going on....and if not...we still got good steady young talent....and some breathing room in our bulging cap space

TRD Rs200 01-31-2010 08:29 AM

^no offense, lets hope u'll wrong and they keep slumping

E-40six 01-31-2010 08:31 AM

i'm thinking this trade was also a salary dump to go after kovy during the off season

cause Mayers, Stajan, White and UFA and RFA's at the end of the season

Stajan is good at the money he makes and can possibly become a very good player. Hagman if he was healthy all season and injury free would be good as well (this, of course, is no guarantee in the west). White is a good young D that has played great.

So all in all, not BAD but it definitely isn't very good. It was a salary dump so what can you really expect.

Something else interesting!

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Anaheim Ducks are currently working on details of a trade that would see veteran goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere traded to the Maple Leafs in exchange for Vesa Toskala and potentially another player.

Giguere needs to waive his no-trade clause in order for the deal to go through, and it is believed to be the only thing holding up the deal.

The most valuable player of the 2003 Stanley Cup playoffs, Giguere recently lost his starting job to netminder Jonas Hiller.

Hiller inked a four-year, $18-million extension on Saturday, which cleared the way to trade Giguere and his one year, $7 million contract.

Toskala is making $4 million this season but is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Ronin 01-31-2010 08:50 AM

HAHAHAHAHAH! Oh man, the Flames got burned with this trade. Salary dump? Well, doesn't matter. If that's the case, it is still a terrible trade if no picks or at least a promising prospect are involved. If it's a salary dump, then they basically gave Phaneuf away. Sutter must be smoking some good shit. Say what you what about Celine Dion but he's worth more than Toronto's garbage.

Giggy to the Leafs...that is definitely a salary dump after the Ducks signed Hiller. Toskala is making $4m but is a UFA after this year and this relieves the Ducks of Giggy's $6m+.

Ronin 01-31-2010 08:57 AM

Giggy to the Leafs for Toskala and Jason Blake. Uhhh...that's $6m+ for a $8m+ cap hit...although I think Blake is on for another year?

Burke is starting what he did in Anaheim. Dumping dead weight.

A great morning for Brian Burke, apparently.

TRD Rs200 01-31-2010 09:08 AM

wow... leafs dumped alot of cap space today. wonder whats next

mako 01-31-2010 09:10 AM

wow, when was the last time there were trades like this on a day that was not the trade deadline

Ronin 01-31-2010 09:16 AM

Looking at it closer, the players the Leafs got...they've got more points than just about everyone on the Flames roster short of Iginla and Rene Bourque. However, if they don't work out AND resign, this is a terrible trade. Stajan and White are young enough that they haven't hit their prime.
