This list is of the legal methods of watching online streams of Canucks games this season for users within North America, specifically Canada for CBC and TSN games. European users are encouraged to check out and research the advantages and disadvantages of ESPN360. A handful of Canucks games will also be streamed on Yahoo Sports for US users, the schedule for which is announced monthly.

As per the board rules:
Remember, there are many ways of hooking up your laptop to a television (HDMI cord, XBox360, PS3) without loss of quality. Team1040 also streams audio live every game.

General Information

From what we saw last year, CDC streams are fairly high quality with minimal connection issues. The support for the streams is very effective; often there is a forum thread for troubleshooting where questions get answered very quickly. They are accessed directly from the homepage of Canucks.com.

http://onfrozenblog.com/2009/01/15/GCL_logo.jpg NHL Gamecenter Live

General Information

If you are located out of British Columbia or Yukon and would like to watch Canucks games online, NHL Gamecenter Live is your best bet. Previously called "NHL Center Ice Online", the user interface and video quality was improved drastically last year. While not HD quality, it is very crisp and clear, easily watchable fullscreen on a 27" monitor. Unless your internet connection is poor, video lag and connection problems are non-existant, except perhaps on single day per year that they allow anybody to use it for free to test it out.

Restrictions

NHL Gamecenter Live does not have rights for national broadcasts or regional broadcasts if the user is located within that specific region. Therefore, blackouts occur if:
-The user is located within the region of the regional broadcast (ie. BC for Sportsnet Pacific Games)
-The game is nationally broadcasted (ie. TSN and CBC games - totalling 26 of the 82 games this eyar)

Benefits

With Gamecenter Live you get to watch any NHL game you want, in high quality, that does not fall under the above restrictions, including Canucks Pay Per View games. You can watch 4 at one time, there are live stats, and some games have alternate camera angles. You can also watch any NHL game in the past four years on the Gamecenter Live archive. A brief promotional video introduction to Gamecenter Live can be found here.

Cost

NHL Gamecenter Live is $24.95 a month or $199.00 for the season. Last season, there were many promotions available to get a cheaper price before the season starts. Read Gamecenter Live's FAQ before purchasing.

FAQ

1. Which feeds are shown for Canucks games on Gamecenter Live?

Half of them are the Canucks feeds and half of them are the other teams' broadcasts. While some of the American commentators are crappy (Nashville, LA, etc), a lot aren't (Sabres, Rangers, etc), and it's actually really interesting to hear opinions on the Canucks that aren't biased and inside perspective on the other team. Who knows, maybe they'll implement a choice of which broadcast you get this year... they haven't announced changes to the service yet.

2. I live in <insert outside of province city here>, but my billing address is in Vancouver. Will I be able to watch Gamecenter Live without blackouts?
Yes. They set restrictions based on your IP address by which you are connecting, not your billing address.

Does anybody have Center Ice for Shaw? The one where you get to watch most of the games? How is that?

I had it for Bell ExpressVu before and it was pretty sweet, just wondering if it's any better/worst with Shaw.

Harvey Specter 09-10-2009 03:49 AM

I don't know about Center Ice but Shaw seem have issues with Canucks PPV games last year.

woob 09-10-2009 06:49 AM

^^ fuck yeah I remember missing ~5 mins of a PPV game last year.... Bitched at Shaw and they gave us the game for free. They were cool about it but still, it was pissing.

Rookie Shirokov determined to crack Canucks’ roster
Thursday, September 10th, 2009 | 5:10 am
Canwest News Service

EDMONTON – It isn’t the $500,000 tax-free salary he left behind in Russia that worries Sergei Shirokov, but the 15 feet of ice he sacrificed to follow his National Hockey League dream to Canada.

And Wednesday, even that wasn’t so bad.

“First period, I look; it is small rink,” the 23-year-old from Moscow said after his first game on the narrower North American ice sheet. “Packed. Many guys. Second period, is OK.”

Shirokov was more than OK. His patience, skill and vision with the puck were obvious as the left winger set up a pair of goals and numerous other scoring chances in the Vancouver Canuck prospects’ 4-3 victory against the University of Alberta Golden Bears.

And since Shirokov’s initial foray into the Canadian hockey heartland didn’t curb his enthusiasm for his remarkable decision to join the Canucks, nothing will.

Having fought fabled Central Red Army in arbitration to win his release from the Kontinental Hockey League, then signing a two-way, entry-level National Hockey League contract with the Canucks that will pay Shirokov just $65,000 if he spends his rookie season in the minors, the Russian made his North American debut in front of a few hundred fans at a university arena while playing against student-athletes.

“It’s OK,” he smiled. “I go on ice, Vancouver Canucks jersey. I’m happy.

“KHL is good money. But play at NHL is better. Better level. I want to play in Vancouver. Russia, it’s big money. But NHL is better league. I say to coach: I have to go NHL. I go.”

He came in August and hopes to be in Vancouver when the NHL season begins in October. The likelihood of that increased significantly when Canuck veteran Pavol Demitra revealed this week he’ll be out at least another six weeks due to a slow recovery from shoulder surgery.

There seems little doubt that Shirokov, one of only two Russian players to leave the KHL for entry-level NHL deals this summer, has the skills to play for the Canucks. There is a question about his size: five-foot-10 and 165 pounds.

He began to answer that question Wednesday when after getting run over by Alberta alternate captain Eric Hunter in the first period, Shirokov crushed the former Prince George Cougar a period later with the game’s biggest hit.

Shirokov does not fit the Russian stereotype. Even with his limited English, he is engaging and personable.

“He’s got a smile on all the time,” Scott Arniel, the coach with the American Hockey League’s Manitoba Moose – who ran the Canuck bench Wednesday – said after the game. “When he got hit (by Hunter), he came back to the bench and had a big grin. And when he went out and got a big hit, he came back and had an even bigger smile.

“He’s doing whatever it takes to get his shot. That shows the character of the kid. If he doesn’t end up in Vancouver, he’s excited about playing for the Manitoba Moose. He has already checked out schools for his girlfriend, both in Vancouver and Manitoba. You can tell he’s the type of kid who wants to be in the NHL and, however long it takes him, he’s going to do that.”

Shirokov convinced Canuck general manager Mike Gillis during a summer phone call that he was serious about leaving the KHL, something few young players have done during the long-festering dispute between the NHL and Russian Federation over transfer fees.

Gillis gave Shirokov the 2006 rookie maximum of $850,000 for this season, but he has to make the Canucks to earn it. If, as expected, Shirokov plays in the AHL with the Moose, he gets $65,000. That’s the deal. And he has to start training camp with the Canuck prospects, mostly raw rookies.

“You can tell he’s thinking a little bit ahead of some of the kids he’s playing with,” Gillis said Wednesday. “He’s got great hands. He put the puck on a guy’s stick in the slot four or five times and got a couple of assists. I think it was a good start for him.

“He didn’t know he was going to be able to come over until very late in the summer, so mentally and emotionally, I don’t think it was in his head. But now that he’s here, he seems to be getting better every day.”

Shirokov had 17 goals and 41 points in 56 games last season in Russian, where he was considered one of the KHL’s rising stars.

“He was a top-six player,” Stan Smyl, Gillis’ special assistant, said. “He was always on the ice.”

Smyl was dispatched last February to Moscow for 10 days. He watched Shirokov play four times. He and the Canucks’ Russian scout, Sergei Chibisov, had lunch and dinner with Shirokov.

“He asked me 101 questions – about players, about the league, about Vancouver,” Smyl said. “He asked about our depth. He wanted to know what the minors are like. His girlfriend wants to go to school, so they asked about UBC. He told me he wanted to come.

“That commitment (to play in North America) makes a big difference. He has the skill and ability, too, but he has a passion to play hockey here.”

that bum was a huge bust. i remember seeing him cough up the puck NON STOP that led directly to goals. massive defensive liability when he played with us.

It's awesome that he's already looking at schools for his gf. Really shows that he wants to be here and is willing to put in the effort to stay. Good to see some russian kids stepping away from the greedy russian stereotype.
