You're running 7 Pro x64? Was that the ISO you used?

mc. 10-22-2009 06:10 PM

does it come with that authentication sticker thing?

Hondaracer 10-22-2009 06:13 PM

so you can use this student thing in Canada?

VooDood 10-22-2009 07:01 PM

btw, does anyone know if i can only install it onto 1 desktop? or can i install it on 2, say me and my bro's.

Crowtservo 10-22-2009 07:03 PM

On a related note, I decided to use the copy I got from Amazon instead of downloading professional through the student deal (nothing I would use in pro anyway). I expected to have to A) install windows xp before I could "upgrade" to windows 7 or B) input the windows XP disc to verify I had a legit prior OS to upgrade from. Instead I installed from the Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Upgrade disc without ever having to use the XP disc. I was previously using the RC1 and did a clean install so there was no record of a prior OS on the drive. I guess the "upgrade" concept turned out different than people expected.

I'll save the student deal for when I get home to Vancouver and install it on my secondary rig there. Hopefully the deal sticks around for a few months.

Hondaracer 10-22-2009 07:09 PM

just bought mine, $52 for the upgrade + disc kit

is the disc kit the full retail box version or what did i just buy? the stupid upgrade Cd's?

hopefully not cause im planning on just burning the iso as discussed here..

lol the disc kit is the physical disc which they are going to ship to you. If you had planned to download and burn the iso you wasted $13.

Hondaracer 10-22-2009 07:20 PM

well if they are sending me the disc then whats the differance between buying the retail boxed version, or buying this 39.99 "upgrade" ?

can you use this box kit to do a clean install as you would if you burnt the ISO?

TOS'd 10-22-2009 07:44 PM

how long does a clean install to windows 7 take. not including backup of old files and stuff. just the install of os.

Hondaracer 10-22-2009 08:06 PM

when i installed the build version on my laptop it did not take long at all if i remember correctly

The difference is this one costs $40 and the in store one is $250. They are both the upgrade version. The "Box kit" is just the physical disc, you would use it in the same way you would use a bootable iso.

From booting from disc to loading windows the first time about half an hour. The time consuming part is always backing up and reinstalling your programs.

If you guys still need help converting to ISO this site helped me a lot

So im thinking of buying it for the $40. My question is if i buy the 32bit AND 64bit. Will they give me 2 keys? I want 2 keys so I can install 64bit twice. Because the keys are interchangable ( i believe). Can anyone confirm?

ienhz 10-22-2009 11:19 PM

Does anyone actually use gadgets? Aero peek seems pretty useless considering almost all of the gadgets are garbage...

illicitstylz 10-22-2009 11:22 PM

i'm running windows xp x64 with 2GB Ram, pentium D dual core processor

Is it worth it going to win 7 x64 (will upgrade ram of course) if I don't do any real resource hogging applications? I ask because I want to save myself the headache when it comes to compatibility issues, where 32bit should have the edge in this section.

Any insight?

I had that same problem when upgrading from a 32bit to a 64bit OS a while back but I can't remember exactly what I did to fix it. I don't think it's the OS you downloaded that is the problem though. Try googling the error message, you should find a solution involving windows repair and command prompt.

do you think its because i currently have an OS running right now so its detecting drivers and what not ?

should i wipe the harddrive first then boot up window 7 again and see if it still ask for drivers ?
if it still asks for drivers then i know its the installer

TOS'd 10-22-2009 11:37 PM

Are win7 cd keys compatible between professional 32 bit and 64 bit? In case i decide to switch over?

getalove 10-22-2009 11:49 PM

^ i doubt it ...
since home premium and ultimate cd keys all don't work with each other .. i'll guess diff bits have dif cd keys as well

twitchyzero 10-22-2009 11:52 PM

i think keys are interchangeable between 32 and 64 bit..but not interchangeable between the diff trims (basic, home premium, pro, ultimate)

so if you have ea chinese win7 pro x86...that key works with english win7 pro x64.

That's how i think it works

Mugen EvOlutioN 10-23-2009 08:51 AM

man this shit is quite confusing fuck

Gh0stRider 10-23-2009 10:36 AM

wondering if its worth getting for my 3 year old laptop or get a new laptop next year?

1.7 ghz, maxed out at 2gb ram running vista x86

well it shouldn't even be going into the HDD to look for drivers I don't think. Do you have another DVD drive you can try it with?

getalove 10-23-2009 12:16 PM

alright! i got it working ..i got fed up with the student download version of window 7 and went and downloaded the RTM version

and it installed flawlessly!!!!

TOS'd 10-23-2009 01:10 PM

i hate this .exe

i run the damn thing and keep getting this error.

http://i33.tinypic.com/n71xxw.jpg

but i dont know if it had competed or not. after that error i made sure the expanded folder wasnt on read-only. and did it again, but still got that error.

Where can i get the RTM, getalove.

EDIT: i ignored that error and started makign the .iso, its at 50% right now..

the error is because you are trying to run a 64bit window 7 on a 32bit vista/window right ?
if you are .. you will get that error ..
burn it on a DVD, boot it up and give it a try ... if you get the same error as i did .. asking for dvd drivers or something ..
then go download the RTM version on mininova ... or any other sites liek that ..
