Iam wondering how accurate the speedtest is

Last time I did speedtest on friends connection it was rated at 25.00 mb
however when I downloaded a file it only went 600kb average

Speedtest is fine..

illicitstylz 05-07-2011 06:05 AM

My telus optik without TV on, shared across 3 connections, is usually 7-8 mb/s download.

had a lot of disconnect issues last night though.

The place you downloaded from was probably capped at 600/Kbps.

I've tried, many hrs on the phone with them just to tell me nothing is wrong and my area is "saturated" with users.

nope tried different sources

it jumps pass 1.25 sometimes it just feels like a little boost

Got it installed yesterday, went pretty well.

I have the regular optik tv and internet, so only 15mbits. However, I tested yesterday with 1, 2, and 3 HD streams going (recording and watching) and I still get 14mbits on speedtest.

Oh the joys of living in a new condo building with fibre.

Got a pretty good deal by calling retentions and quoting the 15/15 deal. RFD has a long thread on it.

Yeah, it's nice. My building was pre-wired with Telus fibre too. I get 25Mbps no matter what I have going on Telus TV.

We got our first year of service free from the developer, but after that we got a special package which was $20 for Internet and like $35 for TV with some extra packages.

Sometime last year, they jacked up the Internet by $2, and just last month, it went up another $2, plus basic TV went up by $3.

I was still on the old platform, so they have to upgrade me to Optik soon, and they said I had to start paying $39 for my Internet.

Ended up speaking to rententions on the weekend and then said they would give me my current pricing for another year... so for now I'm okay with it... but may look to switch to Shaw later.

Time to switch to Telus Optik Highspeed Turbo if that's the case.

Nothing beats downloading at 2.8MB/s on a consistent basis.

van_city23 05-09-2011 03:13 PM

I have been following this forum for a while, decided to finally register and contribute. I was on the phone with a rep earlier trying to negotiate a deal. I currently have telus home phone and internet but shaw cable. I told them of a shaw offer and they did match the price for the first year but told me they can not make price adjustments for long term contracts. I'm guessing they could but he just didn't want to. Anyways, i'm near the edge to making the switch but just waiting to get a good package deal setup before i give the ok.

if you have fibre you should call in and talk to retention and get them to give you 25mb (Optik Turbo) for free/cheaper price. They should be willing to as you are fibre ready.

@van_city23: The deals aren't going to change too much until after summer. There will be a couple little things like cheaper for 6 months and stuff like that but no real major changes

@InvisibleSoul: Make sure you check your internet speed after the upgrade to Optik. There has been a couple times were the system will automaticly put you on the 15mb profile and getting it chnaged back to 25mb can be a hassle if you have to do it yourself.

Switched to Telus Optik from Shaw. Download speed is pretty much similar but upload is doubled now. Only thing I miss right now is the ability to do wireless bridge on the old router connected to Shaw modem. However, Telus left me a wireless adapter during the installation since I couldn't get the firmware to run wireless bridge. So, no complaints so far.
I barely had issues with inconsistent speeds with either Shaw or Telus. I was thinking of switching to Teksavvy but my family wanted to bundle the TV and phone at the same time, so Telus is working for me right now. XD Oh and 125GB cap is not too bad for me.

Is there a direct number for the retentions department or did they transfer you over?

Call their main line: 310-6988, then follow the prompts for cancellation. If they ask for a phone number, just wait and don't do anything. It will then ask you if you're a residential or business line. You will be transferred to retention after.

Good luck.
