I waited on the tarmac for 2 hours at LAX on a 23 degree and sunny May day with no wind. That’s a lot crazier to me.

Badhobz 12-20-2022 02:53 PM

It’s LAX. That place is a shithole regardless of weather.

Increasingly, you cannot say that major snowstorms is an outlier here in YVR. I mean we already had 2 big ones and it's not even the end of December. We have got to invest in equipment and put more $$ to be prepared, at the airports, at roads, in transit, etc.

StylinRed 12-20-2022 03:10 PM

Snowstorms are still an outlier event though especially here

Interestingly tho another issue of delays at YVR may be due to staffing, since passenger numbers are still half of what they were pre-covid, I doubt yvr is fully staffed yet

Badhobz 12-20-2022 03:11 PM

is it just me or is it snowing a bit again? its gonna be a white xmas at this rate. sweet!

underscore 12-20-2022 03:21 PM

Is it really an outlier event when it happens every year?

They were though. A foot of snow fell overnight in north van. People are measuring as high as 18 inches in Metro Vancouver in accumulation. That's 3x the historical average December snowfall in 24 hours. Couple that with accumulation that week that hasn't been washed away by rain like most years. As usual it's a no win situation because no one can ever just say "shit happens" anymore, and everyone is always mad at someone for everything. If they had staff and equipment for this it would cost money, then people would bitch that the costs of flying are higher because YVR is "wasting money" on preparing for something that never happens.
The weather outside is weather, and as shit gets crazier because we destroyed the planet, we aren't going to be able to be prepared for everything. It's just like the floods. Everyone asking why they weren't prepared for it? Because it's never happened in the lifetime of anyone that's alive today.

my mind is blown routing through some US airports thinking BKK or LHR would be the busiest
looks like microprocessors

I've said it last year and I'll say it again. How much time, money and lives have been lost due to the collective will of the world to celebrate the western world's biggest holiday in the middle of fucking winter? All For what? To celebrate some mythical baby being born in the Judean desert two thousand years ago? Or some Pagan worship of some trees?

Same goes for Chinese New Year. Pure insanity.

Bah Humbug to you all!

Next month I'm going to have to connect thru ORD, DEN, and ATL with a max 1.5 hour connection time

Wish me luck and pray to the weather gods to have mercy!

What the hell - you must be sadistic, going through all those airports... :lol

CivicBlues 12-20-2022 03:54 PM

Yeah tell me about it. All because YVR no longer has a direct flight to the busiest airport in the world (ATL). Which it still would, if it was a real international airport :p

Some girl cheated on her husband 2000 some odd years ago and was so good at lying about it that I’m making hundreds of canapés for drunk accountants while listening to the worst music that’s ever existed.

Hondaracer 12-20-2022 04:08 PM

That’s also assuming he existed at all lol

Edit*

On the Jesus/Christmas note I went to a very interesting place in Ireland, New Grange, which predates the pyramids etc.

This place had a bunch of architecture and structures based on the winter solstice etc. I’m sure we’ve all seen zeitgeist or sonthing similar which shows how Jesus, Christmas, bla bla bla is all tied to the same calendars people thousands of years before used. But it was interesting to see places that existed even before the places we associate this with (the pyramids) we’re doing the same shit 3200+ years before Christ

It was immaculate Joe, IMMACULATE!! :lol

If Aliens are observing us then they must be laughing at our collective stupidity. Can you imagine how awesome summer would be if we had Christmas on June 25 instead? We should all be taking a page from the bears and hibernating our fur-less butts for the next 3 months.

I sat on the tarmac for 2 hours in Portland after an emergency landing from Mazatlan. Watched someone die of heart attack a few rows ahead. Pretty sure I was the last person he saw alive as we locked eyes before he fell down in the aisle. He wasn’t feeling well in Mexico. We happened to have a drink with his daughter at the resort before boarding the bus and she said he hadn’t been well all week.

Shook my wife up. She hasn’t flown since. I still fly the odd time for work, myself..

westopher 12-20-2022 05:02 PM

Put it into health care please so my wife’s raise pays for e30 parts.
Oh and so less people die waiting for health care of course.

Instead we need to collectively lobby the federal government to issue punitive fines for airlines that hold people on the tarmac for over an hour. The airlines in turn will pressure the Airport authorities to clean up their act.

All in all, YVR is not really a "MAJOR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT". More like a major Canadian Airport. We don't even crack the top 50, and probably only barely the top 100 pre-covid (2019) with 24 million passengers. Point of comparison Sea-Tac had 46 million passengers and Toronto 47 million. Sad fact is most US airline hubs like Denver, Atlanta, Chicago blow every other Canadian airport outta the water in both scale and passenger movements.

Two cities with similar populations (2.6 and 2.8 million) their airports couldn't be any more different:

YVR:

Denver:
https://www.google.com/maps/place/De...!4d-104.990251

You can’t compare Denver and Vancouver. It’s a major hub for one of the largest airlines in the world, probably more then one. I suggest you compare take off/landings before you even begin to compare budgets. The metropolitan population have little to do with the equation. Just like the city of Vancouver, the airport is not prepared with equipment for the odd snow day we get. Chaos ensues.

I should say. Todays events are completely unacceptable, I feel awful for every passenger, worker involved. But it’s pretty hard to compare an airport which gets 2 snow days a year, probably 10% of the traffic to a couple world class airports. Especially one that gets real winter and obviously require equipment daily. Poor Canada.
