Took the drone out to try and help a fellow drone user try to spot his unit that died yesterday and landed in the middle of Deer Lake... pilots call this FIKI (Flight Into Known Icing Conditions). That's all ice that accumulated on the blade/gimbal/arms and housing. Did quite well but the cold definitely sapped the battery life.

Nice, did you get some nice pics of the storm from high up?

quasi 12-23-2022 01:43 PM

If you haven't shovelled your driveway I'd probably recommend don't. I shovelled mind, just had a peak out the window and I think I might be able to skate on it, it's solid ice lol.

MarkyMark 12-23-2022 02:12 PM

That happened to our walkway. We kept it nice and clean all winter and when I got home today it was just half an inch of solid ice the whole way. Spent 20 minutes breaking it up with a hammer and kicking the chunks of ice off to the side.

Reports Safeway on 152 a Fraser hwy has had a roof collapse.

Looks to be fake the tweet has been deleted.

Not really, was trying to fly low to have a batter chance of spotting the downed drone.

$30 an hour used to be a fairly decent wage in Vancouver.

Fast forward to the average 1BR costing around $1,800-$2,000 to rent,-- it's become quite paltry.

It's actually crazy how much a viable wage has digressed in such a short amount of time here.

It's a problem breaking all of our major systems in this city. I'm actually surprised this hasn't become more of a hot button topic than it currently is in this local narrative here.

It was a burst water pipe at safeway that caused it to close.

Vancity is a fucking joke.

They can't even design a mobile app that can properly save your bank card number. You literally end up having to grab your physical fucking card for your 20-digit (hyperbole) account number every time you login. Working in tech this is such a simple issue to fix.

I've emailed their head office numerous times, among a litany of negative reviews in the Apple store as per the problem. Years now and it's still not fixed, with the same canned response "voice your concerns at the Vancity leadership meeting" :lol

I've never dealt with an app that doesn't have that capacity, so if her tenure is any indication of addressing such a simple problem, I can't imagine her being successful at YVR.

More then anything this just proves how utterly useless CEOs are. It's an bullshit overpaid job that is artificially kept as a necessity in the corporate world by other overpaid CEOs.

They do not earn their pay in the slightest.

MG1 12-23-2022 03:50 PM

VanCity is so Mickey Mouse. It took me forever to get their stupid app to log me in via Face ID. The app is down quite a bit. They keep sending me invites to run for board and daily reminders to vote. To add insult to injury, they charge you for eTransfers. So lame. I do most of my banking through Simplii . PC Financial is pretty stupid, too.

donk. 12-23-2022 03:57 PM

At least by banking with VanCity you Make Good Money

Errr, I mean, the top executives make good money giving you 1% while they lend it out at 5-20%

For the record VanCity didn't design their mobile app - most BC and Ontario credit unions have their online technology built by Central1 which is a local company that builds "universal" apps for the credit unions which are then customised for each credit union (if they have the money). Smaller credit unions use the products as-is.

The problem you describe happens on the Coast Capital app as well b/c it's the same app and I have no idea why Central1 hasn't fixed it yet.

Central1 has over 700 employees so I don't know why the tech stack is so bad - it's one of the reasons I switched banks and moved to Tangerine cause the Coast Capital tools just weren't good enough.

supafamous 12-23-2022 06:16 PM

I can't be the only one here that feels this way but I really enjoy driving in these conditions. I don't have to go fast to have the car be all squirmy on me and being smart pays offs. SH-AWD is also dope in this weather - the torque vectoring is great, I give the throttle a squeeze at the apex of a corner and the car just "magically" rotates around.

whitev70r 12-23-2022 06:18 PM

Went out for an errand, pools of water everywhere! Layer of ice is half melting so it's still quite slippery out there. If temps drop, there will be ice rinks everywhere but I think forecast is that temps will rise ... it's just wet & slushy out there!

JSALES 12-23-2022 06:42 PM

Today, I had an appointment downtown at 9 am. I thought I would take the chance and park my car at the station and take the train from Metrotown to Burrard station which worked fine getting me there. On the way back though from Granville station where I boarded, I was stuck on the train for about an hour and half at Broadway-Commercial station with no ETA of when things would start running again. Told myself this is why I don’t take transit and the one day I decide to, the trains run into issues. Ended up taking an Uber for $70 back to Metrotown where I parked. This city sucks when it snows..

inv4zn 12-23-2022 06:42 PM

Lol, what looks like soft snow is actually hard ice, and what looks like slippery slush is just water.

Also, drove highway 1 between Willingdon and Canada Way around 3pm, and the entire highway looked like a battlefield. Literally no lanes ploughed. Saw a spun out taxi and what looked like the passengers helping dig him out.

carsncars 12-23-2022 09:23 PM

Highway 1 has tons of pooling water everywhere now. Saw a car hydroplane into a ditch near Canada Way just now.

StylinRed 12-23-2022 09:32 PM

Didn't see any ploughs out today, guess all the cities are penny pinching and counting on the rain to deal with things

GS8 12-23-2022 09:46 PM

The pooling water + lack of reflective road lines = fuck everything in this region...

I hit three water piles on my way from New West to Burquitlam. Don't wanna flood my van after having it for only 2 months.

Also, I was at the Hub Restaurant in New West and just as we finished eating, we were told the whole building was being closed do a pipe burst. This was around 8pm. Good thing I wasn't planning on seeing Avatar 2 at the Landmark :fuckthatshit:

That bus should troll YVR :troll:

And BC Ferries needs to staff the fuck up already. There were issues way before this weather. The weather only cements the fact they need more bodies. But at least they replaced their CEO with an interim :derp:

It's pretty funny walking around though:

Layer of snow above
Sheet of ice in the middle
Puddle of water at the bottom

Reminds me of existential dread

nismodrifter 12-23-2022 10:13 PM

Power going off and on multiple times tonight.

Ya, was out on Highway 1 in the afternoon and it was proper fucked. Where were the plows? Only one lane cleared and it was the HOV. Getting to an exit was quite difficult and dangerous if you’re not used to driving in thick (5cm+) slush.

My dad's one of the chief engineers at BC ferries

In regards to low staff, well you guessed it, same as all other industries, there's shortages.

What BC ferries has done tho, is rehire many retired staff, for your cruising experience.

Next time your on board, for your two week xmas vacation, in a first world country, be happy you only had to wait an extra hour, or three to get to your destination over the holidays.
Someone retired at age 65, but came back to work, so you could spend the holidays with your family on the island

Just to top it off, for the staff they could not find, they hired internationals, my dad tells me the engine rooms sometimes have a Polak, a Albanian, Emirati and whatever other mix in there working the same shift, with mass language barriers at times. But the shit gets done eventually, someone's gotta suck the days dick after spending an 2 extra hours in traffic

I'm not shitting on you GS8, just giving another perspective KappaPride

Nah it's all good. I've never personally had issues with the Ferries when I used it but it does seem to circle back to the point of our overall workforce. Where's the local supply? Where's the incentive? I don't know what the average Ferrry salary is but if bodies can only be found internationally, does it speak to something about certain industries in this city?

Will the service and trades sectors largely consist of off-shore emergency workers while all the locals work in comfy tech office jobs in the glass towers while most of Gen Z will focus on being influencers / vloggers from their glass basements? Maybe but it kinda screams dystopian.

westopher 12-24-2022 03:31 AM

It’s because jobs can’t support housing costs. I’ve been saying it would happen for years in Vancouver but it’s all over canada, and remote work is driving the issue further than ever. When you need 4x the average household income for 90% of housing, you’re left with zutroy from Albania who’s willing to live with 3 guys in a one bedroom because he’s just happy to be here in canada, or nobody.

BC ferries wanted a terminal manager for tsawwassen at one point. I was going to apply, but i didnt think they would pay that much. Plus it seems like a thankless job

On a snow related note: ITS GONE, replaced with friggin insane flooding. Im so glad yesterday i wore my rubber boots to go out as lansdown parking lot was literally pools of water that were 6-10 inches deep. I setup some flood barries at our house today, worried all this water will go into my crawl space.
