Yesterday on the uncleared Richmond roads. Saw a new supra driving on westminster hwy, looked like he was doing alright. Also saw an s2000 diagonal in the intersection on garden city. I passed buy a few times, at first 2 guys were trying to push. 20 minutes later he was just sitting in the car.

There needs to be penalties for guys on summer tires. Put the money towards snow tires instead of paying a fine or recovery fee.

It might also just fizzle out into nothing.

Hope so, my parents have decided this is the year they want to spend Xmas together and are driving here from Saskatchewan. I was able to convince my dad to at least put snow tires on his truck, never in his life has he ever used them and he lives in rural Sask where if you want the road plowed you jump in your bobcat and do it yourself.

Holy crap Kingsway was so bad. Once you cross Boundary.... black ice/frozen crap on the road, the ABS kicked in quite a bit just trying to slow down normally.

GLOW 12-21-2022 02:52 PM

burnaby or vancouver side of kingsway?

I went down boundary, canada way, gilmore an hour ago and it felt OK, I only crossed kingsway at joyce, no issues there or going up/down the hill.

feeling pretty good in my forester sport, never really got or needed to try out x-mode yet. wife parked on kingsway in unshovelled snow last night. she didn't want to, i said we can try x-mode...didn't need it, got out fine - slipped a bit :ilied:

wonder how it'll fair on black ice/packed frozen crap though

All this complaining about roads not being cleared, is this nor what Chicago and NY and stuff all look like after a big dump? There's not really any issues driving in a SUV with good all season tires and knowing what you are doing.

Of course there are those with bald tires, or just spending the bare minimum. Yeah they'll have a bad time, but those same people would have a bad time even in a city that "knows their snow".

It's a combination of unfit vehicles, and generally people just losing their minds.

The amount of idiots who think standing on the pedal as their wheels spin endless will somehow get them unstuck is unreal. And also the idiots who crawl at 5km/h thinking that's somehow safer. Or the idiots who pull out of side streets as traffic is coming thinking they'll be able to stop like it's sunny outside. Or the idiots who don't even attempt to stop at red lights because snow apparently negates any traffic rules.

It's madness, and it's entirely preventable.

Winter storm watch issued

https://weather.gc.ca/warnings/repor...0502ww1171cwvr

Sounds like round 3 incoming

Tapioca 12-21-2022 04:10 PM

This is a car enthusiast site where everyone has dedicated winter tires.

The vast majority of people in the Lower Mainland don't have winter tires on their cars.

The first round of snow is expected on Thursday night, the agency says, with between 10 to 20 centimetres of accumulation expected. That snow will turn into rain as the temperature warms on Friday.

“The exact precipitation amounts and timing of the changeover to rain remain uncertain at this point, but there is a good consensus that the combination of impactful weather will begin early Friday,” ECCC said.

The agency warns the conditions may make travel difficult for some areas, with visibility likely to be reduced suddenly at times.

The winter storm watch also coincides with an Arctic Outflow warning that ECCC says will make things feel five to 10 degrees colder than seasonal normals Wednesday and Thursday.
Sounds like traffic hell especially with the freezing rain

Sounds like you guys are gonna have a white xmas, that's great! Especially those of you with kids

Had me up until the part where he said he would buy shares in ICBC if he could.I don’t think he realizes that insurance company don’t do well when there lots of claims (i.e. what he’s predicting).

Rain is forecasted for 24/25 so it may not happen.

Though that post after yours said hell may freeze over. We shall see what happens.

The Vancouver side. As soon as I went past boundary, there was a clear, marked difference on how the road surface felt and behaved.

nismodrifter 12-21-2022 07:29 PM

Westjet has cancelled my trip to the USA scheduled to depart on the 23rd. Damn. Was really looking forward to this vacation.

Rebook out of bellingham/seattle? And take the train/bus down there right now?

nismodrifter 12-21-2022 07:46 PM

I have a 2 year old. I'm not that adventerous. Staying at home means some downtime. I'll make the best of it. I don't enjoy the whole airport ordeal at the best of times. No way in hell I will try and deal with the insanity of cancellations and stuff with toddler + stroller etc in tow.

SkunkWorks 12-21-2022 08:54 PM

I moved back from the maritimes to avoid this shit.

Freezing rain is no bueno. 0/10 not recommended.

tofu1413 12-21-2022 09:59 PM

Well, driving around town today, still noticed the higher end cars putting around still…. On summer tires.

Badhobz 12-21-2022 11:27 PM

I drove to my parents place in east van. Along the way I picked up some take out food on Kingsway and helped push this ghetto Yaris that was stuck. Then got to Vic and Broadway where I pushed another stuck bmw out of the way.

All the while asking these dudes why the heck are they out there if they got bald tires to which they both answered, oh I didn’t think I’d get stuck. I wasn’t stuck last time. Idiots.

mb_ 12-21-2022 11:40 PM

Just drove through Highway 1 eastbound, after Willingdon is basically a sheet of ice. Was pretty scary when I got caught off guard and car suddenly just started skidding.
