might be a bit offtopic, but are there any aircraft gas turbine techs here? Or do you have relatives/friends in the field? PM me if so, thanks.

GabAlmighty 03-28-2012 06:56 PM

Don't have anyone for ya but I know there's a couple guys on here that do it. What questions do you have?

BillyBishop 03-28-2012 06:59 PM

I know someone going through the program at BCIT right now; are you in it too?

mnash 03-29-2012 08:03 AM

Yeah, I got accepted for september, didn't pay anything yet and still wondering if I should go there. Just want to know how's that industry doing this days, any jobs? Is BCIT's certificate worth anything really? What the job is really like? I hear I might be ok if I am willing to relocate as it's super hard to find anything here. Should "Avios" story really affect my decisions?

BillyBishop 03-29-2012 11:58 AM

I don't have much to say, but you can read through these threads on AVCanada:

AVCANADA • View topic - Maintenance Engineers

AVCANADA • View topic - Future AME Discouraged

Long reads, but lots of good stuff.

I was about to go into that program but I chose the Air Force route instead. I'm glad I did in this economy. Right now I'm employed as an engine tech on the hornets. Been in for about 7 years and loving it. The trips are awesome and pay is great once you get your Journeyman. Plus they can't fire you.

This video link is fresh (for the public) from a US Naval Officer. It was made just six weeks ago (?) in the Atlantic, just off Newport News (Hampton Roads), Virginia.

These are the latest sea trials of the F-35B on the USS Wasp. They were very successful, with 74 VL's and STO's in a three week period.

The media and the program critics had predicted that we would burn holes in the deck and wash sailors overboard.

Neither of which happened. You will notice a sailor standing on the bow of the ship as the jet rotates.

That was an intentional part of the sea trials.

No catapult... No hook.... It’s a new world out there!

The shape and scope of warfare “worldwide” just changed.

Click your mouse here: F-35B

I had the MicroMachine version as a kid and thought it looked sick. Then I saw the X-Men were using one with vertical lift and was like :ahwow:

Final hurdle's the medical at the end of it if you pass the simulator stuff. Goodluck though man, too bad it wasn't sooner or you may have been on course with me.

^ Good luck with Pilot training. There is a ridiculous wait time and back log right now in the CF so make you think long and hard before you convince yourself you're going to eventually become a Fighter/Transport/Helo pilot. The failure rate is high but if you do make it through, it will be rewarding.

Maybe one day we'll meet over the radio.

Not from what i've heard read, I don't think my "wait" time will be anything extraordinary. Ya I talked to a guy that did phase one in the fall and out of 20 guys in his class only 8 guys passed.

I'm obviously gonna try my hardest but if I do fail that just means I get to go infantry and then hopefully jtf.

I gradded a longass time ago from the GT class from the bcit areospace campus....job wise, nothing worthwile here in vancouver.....take the 10 month course and go work back east or even in germany to make some decent cash...

Trans Canada Turbines might pick you guys outta ur class before ur grad...Pratt-Whitney may do the same...but if you are a city boy, forget about moving out...cause you'll cave and come home sooner than you'll think.

edit: btw, all the good instructors have since retired or left....Im not sure whos running the show now.....

An F-18 just slammed into an apartment building in San Diego apparently after having engine problems on takeoff. Hope everyone's OK!
