Apple fixes prices on their products, you won't find more than $50-100 off anywhere. This Friday Apple is doing their regular Black Friday sale, expect as little as $5 off on some items and $100 on others.

Holy shit...i got the early 2011 model in late september for $1149 FUUUU

kevin7352 11-23-2011 01:26 PM

My friend recently got his mbp stolen at langara.
Do you guys know a way to track it? I know it's possible to use iCloud or something.

ddr 11-23-2011 01:28 PM

i think you would've had to have Prey installed beforehand, not sure about icloud now ...

!MiKrofT 11-23-2011 01:43 PM

Yes any type of recovery/tracking would require this to be enabled beforehand.

kevin7352 11-23-2011 03:11 PM

that sucks! don't think my friend has prey

just installed prey on my mbp. it's so awesome. but the webcam taking a pic w/o the light going off is kinda creepy at the same time (just tested it).

skholla 11-23-2011 05:19 PM

Prey looks awesome! iCloud can track a Mac but only if setup properly. Also with any solution once the hard drive is wiped you are SOL. Can't track a software agent that has been removed.

On my Air and Pro the webcam light does come on for a split second. If you're not paying attention you will miss it.

Boourns gonna be no luck getting the MBP from the Bestbuy opening lol. My sister said there's a hugeass lineup since 7pm today. I'll have my brother check on Sunday but I doubt I'll be getting one now.

I need a bit of help!

My friend has a late 2009 model 13' macbook pro (core 2 duo). It's still pretty snappy but she was asking me if there was a way to make it faster. Does anyone know what's involved in swapping out the hard drive that comes with it for a solid state drive? Also, would I void any warranty? I'd add ram while I was doing that as well.

Thanks in advance ! :)

skholla 12-14-2011 06:12 PM

Ten screws on the bottom case and you will have access to the ram and two more screws to free the hard dive.

Replace the ram with 8gb and hard drive with a 7200rpm, hybrid xt, or ssd... The whole thing will take less than 15 mins.

You will need a sata dock or enclosure to mount your old drive, use carbon copy cloner to clone the drive. You can clone before or after, doesn't matter since macs can boot from USB.

Hey, I'm thinking abOut picking up a MBP for my girlfriend for Xmas. I was looking to get used because I can't simply afford a brand new one, is there anything I should be looking for and is there a place I can take it to get it fully cleaned out of the PO stuff?

Woah thanks .. Is there any way to do this without an enclosure? All the enclosures that there are require you to format the HD first. Since it is SATA, I guess I could just plug it into my PC and format it for mac? Would that work, because in the past drives I use on my PC haven't even loaded on my MAC since they both format differently

!MiKrofT 12-14-2011 07:59 PM

I don't recall needing to format the drive. The entire drive gets imaged over including all that partitions and format. You do require an enclosure so you can copy the data over to the new drive unless u want to reinstall everything.

skholla 12-14-2011 09:02 PM

Not possible without an enclosure, you need to connect the new drive some how to transfer your data.

If you are trying to clone your main drive while still running/booting from that drive you will not be able to do a block level clone. This means that your partition structure will not be copied over. The only way to do a block level clone is to boot from another/third hard drive or the restore disc and select disk utility.

If doing a file level clone then you must format and partition the new drive using apple disk utility. Choose the drive, select partition, choose 1 partition, choose guid partition type (not windows mbr type), and filesystem type hfs+ journaled.

Beware of the many stolen MacBooks for sale on CL. Once apple finds out the CC was stolen they will void the warranty. Check out apple refurbs, great deals starting at $800, comes with 1yr warranty too. Also check out the Mac market used and consignment shop in kits, Rick is a good guy and will help you out. They can also clean up your purchase for a fee, or hit up the apple store, they will help you for a fee or possibly free if you buy software from them (ie Mac osx lion).

I'm just wondering if you cancel a download in Chrome, will it automatically be deleted or will it be saved somewhere taking up room?

kevin7352 12-27-2011 01:28 PM

Hey do you guys know any good video converting programs for macs? i'm trying to get some .avi movies into my iPhone

henry604 12-27-2011 01:55 PM

Look for a program called handbreak. I think it's free

Senna4ever 12-27-2011 06:47 PM

Videora is also free, but a bit slow. It's pretty foolproof though. I personally like Smart Converter though.

If you're just watching movies on your iPhone/iPad at home, you can stream movies from your Mac with VLCStreamer.

skholla 12-28-2011 09:46 AM

Handbrake is primarily used for DVD ripping but recently added support for conversion. There are also a bunch of other apps out there that just focus on conversion. Check the Mac app store.

If you don't want to deal with conversion then check out FlexPlayer in the iOS app store. Once loaded on your device you can copy all media files to your device using iTunes and play then using this app. Works great, saves time. You will need to turn off iCloud syncing for FlexPlayer or it will use up all of your cloud space trying to back up the media files.

I have a 13" MacBook Pro aluminum, I find the battery life isn't that great. I never had it live for 10 hours without a charger! I guess the LED backlit keyboard and the auto deem/lit screen eats a lot of batteries??

k2_alpha 12-28-2011 04:27 PM

^
It Is only suppose to be 7 hours. 7 hours is A LOT ALREADY.

skholla 12-29-2011 08:14 AM

None of the current MacBooks advertise 10hrs battery life, they are all "up to 7hrs" and that will be with low power consumption. With average use I get about 5 hours out of mine, brand new battery, couldn't be happier.
