anybody have 1 ssd and 1 hard drive in their macbook? I just picked up an ssd and have been looking at options such as the optibay just wondering if anyone has experience putting these things in?

Iceman_2K 01-14-2012 09:10 PM

I have two SSD's in my macbook pro using the optibay and it runs great.

Balling... :D

The optibay is the same shit... just be sure you have the right screwdriver for taking everything out. I have seen many fuck'd ups by forcing the screws.

ddr 01-15-2012 01:44 PM

haha 2x ssd's

i installed something similar to an optibay in the previous gen mbp as well. it depends if you need the extra enclosure and how that enclosure looks (not many choices). there's more than one company that makes this for cheaper.

Iceman_2K 01-15-2012 04:57 PM

I run 2 ssd's to run them in RAID 0....lol

just wondering why is it that when i go finder > Music > get info, it shows that i have 12gb of music but when i go into music and highlight all my music and get info from that it only shows 1.8 gb?

edit: it's the itune's folder within music that's like 10gb. why is it so big?

Iceman_2K 01-31-2012 10:06 PM

it holds all your mp3s, downloads, apps, movies, and podcasts that you have.

kevin7352 02-01-2012 12:47 PM

does that mean it doubles up the space that one file takes up?

k2_alpha 02-07-2012 06:16 PM

do you guys run anti virus programs on your macs?

the whole "mac does not get viruses" is long gone. However, are viruses relevant enough to run a antivirus?

skholla 02-07-2012 06:36 PM

I don't run AV on all of my Macs, been pretty lucky/careful on my main one. If you are interested try this...

Free Mac Antivirus, Mac Security and Protection | Sophos Free Tools

roverT 02-07-2012 06:44 PM

I've used Mac for 7 years.....i've never had a problem even going to sketchy sites to well...download. LOL

Senna4ever 02-07-2012 07:28 PM

I've got Norton on mine - just for the peace of mind, I guess. I never had a problem in the 2 years I owned it without anti virus though.

Iceman_2K 02-09-2012 06:24 PM

if you tell it to make a copy in the itunes folder, then yes, because it will copy it from the location you import from. If you tell it NOT to make a copy in the itunes folder, then it will just reference it from the location you import from.

Has anyone damaged their MBP unibody case before? Any experiences on how much it costs to repair some deep scratches? (like bear claw style straches)

iamon 02-14-2012 07:57 AM

Update: bought an ebay version of an optibay. Installed it and and now i have a 60gb SSD + 750gb storage drive. Downside is that because I have an old white macbook the case is cracking everywhere and taking it apart didn't help.

^ Not sure if this helps:

not even worth it, i dropped my mbp on cement and warped the left corner of it leaving the ethernet port inaccessible but still charges. I went to futureshop where i had their psp thing, told me the repair would be 1,100 :heckno:

i didnt bite so i'm rocking a damaged mbp, looks like my own though

Fuhrėr-Z 02-14-2012 06:04 PM

@ SchoolGlue - ffffuck... I heard that before, I guess I'm just gonna have to accept that as an answer... ALTHOUGH, my damage is on 3 corners, but on the bottom detachable case.... Only one dent/scratch is on the main body (which I can live with since it's hidden in between the screen and body.... I'm guessing the 1100 was estimated for main body damage eh?

Armind 02-14-2012 06:42 PM

With the 10.7.3 update. Can anyone run MBP closed with their external monitor hooked up? It doesn't seem to work anymore after that bs upgrade. HALPPPPPPPPPPPPP

Iceman_2K 02-15-2012 09:38 AM

No problems here - used my MBP for a business presentation right after installing the update...lol

I have two questions if anyone knows how to help me,

1) I have a 2009 Core 2 Duo macbook pro 13 and a 2011 I7 macbook pro 17'. I do not have the CD's for my 13' inch, but I have bought Lion on it. Can I use my 2011 I7's CD to install Lion on the 2009 macbook?

2) Will any 2.5' SSD work in the macbook pro 13' (2009) (i.e. SATA III vs SATA II)? Also if I want to add ram, what brands have you guys had success with? TIA :) Gonna go pick up all this stuff from memory express this weekend hopefully

Looking at this drive:

if you bought lion through the appstore, can't you just re-download it? anyhow, there are no security features or serial numbers. ppl are making their own lion install usb's left and right using the original *.dmg (...show contents) and the disk utility (...restore).

Looking at this drive:

Crucial M4 2.5in SATA III Solid State Drive, 128GB at Memory Express

that's a great drive. whatever the lower sata version is, you will only get those speeds (i.e. sataII). i've never bought or recommended mac-specific ram for macbooks. i had a mbp and a mb unibody. i just used the cheapest brand name SODIMM i could find matching the original sticks' specs; not a single problem.

i have the m4 in my desktop. gonna wait till the 256gb drops a bit more and grab that instead because I don't really feel like getting an optibay. who knows, if the 128gb drops near 100 i might think about it. it was $13x on tigerdirect last week. the price at memX aint' so hot. then pairing it with an optibay and a 1tb might be a gd route. (or 2x SSD's).
