I hope the event goes through as planned, people searched getting off the Skytrain and buses, pedestrian check-points when entering the DT core, liquor stores closed all day and a heavy police presence. Basically, I hope the city shows that it can hold a big event (again) and not have any of these incidents.

BTW listening to the police news conference and the chief is saying no fatalities and there are many witnesses saying the guy who fell from the viaduct jumped across in an attempt to take a shortcut.

Because encouraging these actions by actively participating isn't wrong? This is gang/bandwagon/mob mentality at its finest. Let someone else do the damage and take a trophy photo with big smiles like its something to celebrate.

Even if these people did not actually commit a crime, they bear some responsibility for what happened.

Amuse 06-16-2011 10:11 AM

Damn these people. They need to be ID'd
http://nationalpostnews.files.wordpr.../06/riot16.jpg

I guess they didn't riot proof the city enough. Looking back at 94, this looks worse.
We knew this was going to happen and more could have been done to prevent this. like shut down liquor stores early or somehow remove those newspaper boxes for a night.

A photograph can be interpreted in many ways unless there is concrete proof or captions from the photographer, and even then it may not be reliable. To have your face show up in front of riot damage tonight such as the asian guy above, is just asking for it, innocent or not.

Simply put, don't be fucking stupid and put yourself in a compromising situation.

These kids behind the riot are punks who didn't get beat enough growing up. Do you really think they will turn violent over random looting? It's not like they have a political reason to do so.
With a riot where human rights are at stake or the rioters lives sucked so much that it doesn't matter if they die then yes, violence would not be the solution. However with these punk kids? They would scatter like roaches once they heard the police are using force.

Vancouver Riot 2011 - IV

June 15, 2011 -- VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, Canada -- An unidentified rioter smashes the windows of the downtown Bank of Montreal with a hockey stick & teddy bear. -- PHOTO BY ANDREW FERGUSON

Just cause he was holding the stick also doesn't say much... but I still say it's stupid to have picked it up/posed/got your picture taken/stepped forward into the area, unless he was defending or telling people to stop.

uhhh no they don't
many of the people taking pictures in front of damaged property are simply to document what happened, and that they were there.

they don't bear any responsibility for what happened...the people who actually rioted are

There is a difference between those taking pictures to document what is happening and those who pose like :woot: in front of burning cars and trashed businesses to post on their facebook and show friends. The latter is who are in the wrong.

I've got lots of videos of the initial smashing at the Bay and even when everyone first broke into the Bay and started looting and coming back out. I don't know how to rotate my iPhone videos though. I tried using Windows Movie Maker but when I do that, my sound disappears for some reason. Any solution? :S

IMO there were lots of people who were prepared to start a riot last night. I video taped groups of people who had molotovs, crowbars, baseball bats etc. who were there solely to fuck shit up

I was watching the aerial footage and they were talking about Air1 being there with the big spotlight, and I told the wife, "They should bring in the firefighting choppers and just dump water on everyone"...

Getting hit by by the weight of 2600 gallons of water (22000 lbs) is lethal.
