It's just so many fake news and rumors that have people stating them as facts that bothers me. I'm going to assume that you were referring to a Tesla that the door wouldn't open when it's on fire? The car literally has the mechanical override latch(it bypass everything electronic and unlatches mechanically) right by the door. Rear ones is a bit further down depending on model, but Model S3XY and CT all have them right there for front passengers. So much so that for most people who have rode Teslas for the first time mostly use that latch to open the door until they are being told that they just need to press the button. My dad basically continued using the emergency latch until he took my car for a few month when I went away for work. For the 3 years that I have told him he only needs to press the button... nop... first instinct is that latch because it's the closest thing to other cars' mechanism. Some argues why fix something that's not broken, like... come on. Adding rear camera to cars was basically another thing that fix something that's not broken. But it's convenient. Press a button and out you go. Again, back to what I was saying... people now have the tendency to find things that fit their narrative, regardless whether it makes real sense or not. "Tesla has highest death per miles drive" - Yet somehow every single official crash test gave Teslas their highest score EVER. "Tesla doors doesn't open when power shuts off" - So, it's a problem when Tesla uses it, and yet when Benz, BMW, Cadillac... etc use it and it's fine. Just acknowledge your bias first, then post. So people know to take your statement with a grain of salt. But posting them as they were facts... going so far as "I googled and it's tRuE"... :fuckthatshit: |
Hehe is on FIRE! |
Since we are on facts and objectivity here, what does “full self driving” mean? On the topic of pieces of shit on another note, how many vehicles have been released in the last 5 years where panels fly off due to wind? |

But is pressing a button really better than pulling on a handle? Calling out my bias that I had a Mustang Mach-E rental a couple weeks ago and you open the door by pressing on a glowing white circle on the door that lights up as you approach. You press, it pops the door open. Except that I walked up, it glowed, I pressed, and nothing happened. I tried poking and prodding more times, nothing. I'm standing there staring at it, when suddenly the door pops open, all by itself. What the fuck. Last month I dropped by a Polestar showroom to check out the $25k rebated Polestar 3. Same thing: pulled on the handle to open the door, nothing. I thought it was locked and started walking away, when suddenly the door just popped open behind me, all by itself. Why!! Why is this better?! |
I don't have a problem with electronic door handles if they're implemented properly or provide some benefit over mechanical handles, but glitchy software like RabidRat experienced undermines trust in the technology. When something as basic as opening a door becomes complicated by unreliable electronics or laggy responses, it feels less like progress and more like unnecessary complication. That said, I believe electronic interior handles have the added benefit in preventing people from opening doors in dangerous situations (not opening when the car detects cyclists coming by, traffic etc.) and making doors marginally easier to open than a conventional handle, but it's not a big QoL improvement that warrants the added mechanical / electrical complexity IMO. |

How about turning the gear shifter into a dial: https://www.macheforum.com/wp-conten...-gear-dial.jpg Or sprinkling the shifter into the center console as a series of nondescript buttons. Let's locate them with the HVAC controls: https://d2ivfcfbdvj3sm.cloudfront.ne...st0640_087.png How about making HVAC and temperature controls share knobs and buttons, and the way you switch between them, is you press a capacitive touch sensitive icon that sits in the middle of a sea other other icons: https://zecar.com/_next/image?url=ht...pg&w=3840&q=75 https://autoimage.capitalone.com/cms...th=1847&height |
Which manufacturers/models are these examples? |
Mach E, GMC Acadia??, EV6. FWIW I like the dial, esp on RAM1500. Super easy to flick into park/drive when in traffic cuz they don’t have auto hold. Ford’s columns and dial shifter are their best ones. The normal shifter on lightning takes forever to let me shift back and forth for a 3 point turn. |
HES RIGHT!!!! It’s all fucking garbage. All of it!!! |
Let's face it, this forum are full of people locked into the way cars are designed in the 90's - round steering wheel, turn signal stalk on the left, physical shifter on the right, 2 or 3 pedals, physical buttons for heat/AC, side mirrors. With the exception of a button here or there changed, or screen sharper and bigger, every 'innovation' will be seen as unnecessary ... :lol. |
yes! us geezers dont like anything. |

In the same way that I'd rather have a rear camera so I can see the hazard and decide what to do about it myself, vs an option of hiding that from me and having the car just automatically slam on the brake whenever it THINKS objects are detected upon reversing. |
I didn't like the Mercedes style shifter when I first got mine... but after using it for a couple days it's pretty intuitive, not all that different from the old column shifters and more... elegant? to use compared to a column shifter. It's nice to have the console area free for other stuff too. |

On the topic of why fix what ain't broke, what's the deal with digital rear view mirrors? I'm turning that shit off every time. |
Hulkamania not running wild anymore, Hulk Hogan dead at 71. Turned into a MAGA shithead the last while but what an absolute fucking heroic icon as a kid. RIP brutha. |

I think the supposed advantage is that they don't get dirty like physical mirrors. But camera lenses can get dirty too! |
RIP Hulk Hogan :( |
RIP Hulk Hogan. FeelsBadMan Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Change for the sake of change because infinite growth is needed, consumers need to consume new product, so we must change basic functionality to incentivize a new model year. The same shit happens in tech (which is pretty much what cars are now), and it's fucking retarded. |
Since we're talking about car buttons and switches... Quote:

I lament the fact that my childhood entertainment icon is no longer with us, but it has been that way for a a solid ~10 years. (His racist rant was revealed in ~2015) And the fact that his disgusting behaviour really took place another 9 years before that (in 2006?) simply meant he did a good job at deceiving his fans. Interestingly, I have similar sentiments towards Jackie Chan as I do with Hulk Hogan too... |
