Final update during the storm (who knows what the aftermath will be)

10am the gusts and rain have stopped, just in time for me to be able to go out to the roof and clear out the drains. I would have had to go no matter what in the next half hour, or else water would come in through the door down the stairs again. So that positive news improved my mood a bit. It was nice up there actually.

There was a lot of water ingress at the balcony sliding door, but that was to be expected as it's not fully sealed. Lots of towels kept it at bay

Jett just slept away as the 200 KM winds bashed against the doors all night. I moved his bed away from the door in case of catastrophe. He really isn't afraid of weather AT ALL. We call him the Thundercat

This storm feels about the same strength as Mangkhut in 2018, but went past us much faster and stayed further south. There will still be a lot of destruction, but I don't think it will be as landscape altering as that one was. Buildings around me look intact, unlike last time

There's going to be some insane videos coming out, like this from Ocean Park hotel

You still doing ok?

All good now, thanks! Police came to check on the village last night, and that wasn't followed up by ambulances showing up so I think everyone made it out OK. There's still that giant chunk of tree blocking my main path out of here :fuckthatshit:

So, got an email from Electrify America. They were wAndering why I haven’t been using their chargers. I used to go twice a week to shop in Bellingham and go to the casino. I took their survey. Here’s what I posted in the comments section.

I live close to the border and don’t venture beyond the parcel pickup point which is right at the Canada/US border. I’m not sure if I can bring myself to visit a country that wants to make Canada its 51st State. I don’t think this can ever be fixed, which is tragic as I have friends and relatives who live in the US of America.

Forgot to mention that there was a drop down menu………. No longer drive an EV, have charger at home, too expensive, yada, yada, yada. I chose, “other,” and typed in Trump. I should have added “and the GOP”. They’re probably going to cancel my membership, ijbol.

Got my new Airpods Pro 3 - damn the noise cancelling on these is great. Finally upgrading from my broken Airpods Pro 1s and the difference is huge in terms of sound and ANC and transparency mode.

Badhobz 09-26-2025 10:31 AM

im waiting for my airpod pro 1's to break first. damn things wont die.

That's why you need kids hobz. They are basically your path to Chinese-cheapo-guilt free upgrade!

When I need new airpods: hey kiddo, do you want Airpods?
Kid: are we getting the new Airpods Pro?
Me: Sure. :fuckthatshit::lawl:

Only thing is not let Mrs. Hobz know about this.
Else it's: hon, new iphone is out! I think it's time for you to get a new phone!
You: really? :tears:
She: Yeah, you can take mine and I will get the new iPhone 17.

Not having kids means you don't need to run a non-profit enterprise so money can go towards anything instead of buying food for kids that always seem to need more.

To be absolutely serious though, coming from an Asian background, where passing down your legacy (usually $$$) is something of an expectation, kids actually motivated me to work harder in order to generate more wealth.

Especially when you have multi-kids, where just preserving the family legacy is not enough. Thus, it motivated me to keep going even though if it was just me and my wife, we have gotten our "fuck you" money long ago. Probably not enough to live in absolute luxury, but enough for day-to-day expense without ever working again.

With kids, it just made me to want more. I have actually set my financial goal for the next 10yrs on surpassing my parents networth at some point. Kinda my last crusade/rebel against my parents when they told me and my brother that we need to learn how to work on our own because their wealth would go to charity to help others. So that one day I could tell them, "it's ok. I can do just fine by myself."

The Pro 3 have INSANE microphones when you're using them for audio call on iPhone or Mac. Legit sounds studio quality.

ANC wise, I can't tell a difference between Pro 2 + Comply foam tips, and the pro 3.

Sorry for bringing doughnuts back into the fray, but been noticing the old Pizza Hut building on Hastings Street and Alpha? in North Burnaby being renovated. It used to be a Terry Bitch office after Pizza Slut closed down. Now, it's being prepped to become a Vegas Donut. I've seen it around in other areas. Any experience with this place? Good, Bad, Ugly? As in give it five months before they go out of business.

Seems like you could simply pull that same line on your kids and just retire on those "charity" funds :D.

Those charity funds are like a fucking cult. They brainwash you hard. Sugarcoating it like the entire effort of creating wealth is to fulfill your destiny to help the world.

But oh well... it's their money. They do whatever the heck they please.

I already put most of my new ventures into trusts. My kids are those "trust fund kids" now. :fuckthatshit:

Let's just hope everything turns out as I planned.

bcrdukes 09-28-2025 09:30 PM

Hope is not a metric.

Haven't heard good things about their donuts, cheap quality and ingredients apparently.

Are they open yet? If so I'll pop by and try a few and report back :)

I keep driving by and it's not open. I have no idea why it's taking so long. Can't get their shit together, most likely their doughnuts are shit, too.

I can see the same thing happening with restaurants.

First place: a new pizza spot. I show up around 5 PM. The name literally has slice shop in it, but they had zero slices. They tell me they’re “focused on dinner orders,” but if I want, I can order a whole pizza and wait 45 minutes. Why the fuck call yourself a slice shop if you don’t have slices?

Second place: a new brunch joint. They’re open 8 AM to 2 PM—six fucking hours. I roll in 35 minutes before closing and they say they had a busy day so they’re not serving anyone else. You motherfuckers can’t even serve food for six hours straight?

Third place: a fried chicken spot run by a couple from India that use to rent an apartment from us. Food’s great. Hours are 10 AM to midnight, and on weekends they’re open till 3 AM. Why? Because what the fuck else are they going to do—go home and watch TV? Rent for the building isn’t charged by the hour, and the equipment’s already bought. Staying open makes sense.

People shit on places like Tim Hortons, but at least when you go there you know two things: they’ll be open, and they’ll have food.

I'm near the Vegas Donuts on Knight every Saturday so I will take one for the team and trash my body with a couple of their offerings next time and report back.

Re: Lee's - I had a couple on Saturday and, maybe it's nostalgia, but it definitely doesn't seem to be as good as I recall. It's above a Timmy's but below a Duffin's now.

68style 09-30-2025 09:18 AM

Whenever I fly from cowtown to YVR, which isn’t often as I usually have to drive with doggos, I am thankful for the Lee’s at the airport that I can grab a churro donut from.

I stopped going to Tim Hortons years ago and will never visit one again but unless things have changed, one thing you could count on is if you showed up at lunch time they'd already be out of my favorite soup.

Ihad a Lee's Donut for the first time at the Brentwood London Drugs' Grand Opening. It was a plain one. I wasn't that impressed. It was good, but not as good as people made it out to be. I'm going to have to drop by today after a quick trip to VanCity and try a fancier one.

It has changed since years ago ... for the worst !! So don't break your streak, stay the hell away.

punkwax 09-30-2025 01:57 PM

I am convinced that Tim Horton’s onboarding training includes a section teaching them how not to cut a sandwich all of the way through.

westopher 09-30-2025 05:28 PM

It’s funny hearing people talk about how Tim Hortons fell off as if it wasn’t inedible garbage 25 years ago.
