Does anyone know how these longshoreman applications work? I have heard you have to pay for them and I heard some crazy amounts like $30k paid to get the applicaiton.

Apparently, they are changing the system next year so the applications are severely more limited than they already were. One of my clients is trying to get his son in and he said he offered $120k and he still might not get it.

You think there's any truth to that? I don't know why he'd lie to me, but I'm just curious.

When they are hiring Longshoremen members get an application to give to whoever they want, usually a family member or good friend. They aren't supposed to sell them and can in deep shit if they do, but you always hear the stories of guys doing it anyways. Given the amount of greasy guys down there I'm sure it happens but who knows for how much. I've heard $40k but never $120k that would be ridiculous.

Once the applications are handed out and signed they do a lottery from the numbers on each application and then they actually start "hiring" you and getting you trained to work there. For some clarification, the last hiring that did for Surrey/Deltaport was around 1300+ applications in 2018. They are only now getting towards the end of bringing in some of the later draws, so you technically could have spent 40k in 2018 to just start getting trained now, and it'll be another few years of getting basically no work and then maybe by year 10 you're hopefully high enough to get somewhat consistent work.

Actually becoming a member is projected to take up to 20+ years there now. Vancouver may be different but I'm sure it's a long ass time as well.

I think Dayshift is like $55 an hour, afternoons like $70, and graveyard like $86... So is that worth putting up $120k for a chance to one day get work? Keep in mind automation is coming eventually and labor jobs will dwindle. Tell your buddy his kid better get a red seal trade, they'll hire HD mechanics, millwrights, and electricians off the street when they need them, no application needed. You'll get more consistent work that way too.

This is insightful. Thank you.

I think the motivation for this guy was to set up his son so he would be set for the future. His son has been in and out of jobs and he hasn't really found his footing yet. It seems the idea is to invest $120k so he has the potential to make $86/h? That's like $190k a year and I know there's also overtime.

I know the job isn't the most glamourous but to be making that kind of money is pretty crazy without any sort of formal schooling or training.

The union is pretty strong, so that probably helps against a lot of the automation?

Though, if you have to wait that long for a full time position, i'm not sure if it's worth it.

noclue 11-01-2025 10:06 AM

Shit like this is why automation needs to come to the ports.

$120K can buy you post-secondary education anywhere, do that instead of gambling for a chance to work with the hells angels.

Badhobz 11-01-2025 10:10 AM

tell me who he is, ill make sure the guy who sold him the application and the kid gets fired

utterly ridiculous.

The majority of these kids are recruited at 18 or 19 years old. they wont see stable work till they are probably 30. That means these kids will be going to the union hall twice a day, every day hoping to get a job for 10+ years before they are able to hold something steady.

Does this sound great to anyone!? no? thats exactly why we are having a labor issue. As much as we want more longshoremen, their own "traditions" and practices are the ones limiting their options. Plus our ports are just not competitive compared to global standards. We do about 20-24gross moves per hour per crane around here.

Asia and Europe does 30-40 GMPH. thats double our productivity per crane. While halving our labor costs.

Keep in mind he's going to have to drive to the hall to try and get work and needs to get a certain amount of hours every board move to keep moving up. This could mean weeks of driving to the hall everyday and getting jack shit, essentially losing money with the cost of gas plus the hours of your life wasted sitting there. If he's not diligent enough to do this then he's just going to fall off the boards and get deregistered as well.

Hobz probably has more insight on automation, but if the RBT2 ever gets built im sure there will be lots of automation there, forcing automation on the other terminals to compete. The union may be able to slow it down, but other terminals in the world are basically fully automated so it's only a matter of time, you can't stop progress.

If this guys dad has the cash to put down $120k on an application he should be able to get his kid an apprenticeship somewhere for a trade and then he can make $150k+ and not have to wait 10+ years to get it.

Badhobz 11-01-2025 10:22 AM

Deltaport semi automated the CRMG (rail gantries) and they didnt fire a single operator. They instead put them in an air-conditioned room where they just press a button now.

Ideally thats what we want for all the intensive jobs like the vessel cranes and the yard equipment. That'll boost productivity and safety. Of course the writing on the wall is eventually the system works so well you can take the human element out of it, but thats what the union will fight for to keep its members employed.

Rob bank terminal 2 is a pipe dream. i gottta fight too many chugs groups and fucking eco fags to get it off the ground. They all want a piece and we are already 20 years behind what we need for capacity. Thats thousands upon thousands of good paying jobs squelched because of some bitch ass bird, some stupid fuck treaty and dumb fish. This is why if you give everyone a voice, it turns into a cacophony of idiots.

Going to be a good game and likely a pretty full house. Lower bowl is pretty much sold out and they've opened both sides of the upper bowl.

If they can't beat LAFC this year, we're cursed.

if anyones on a fido plan with no contract, i just picked up an iphone 16 pro max 256gb (cert preowned) for like $5 plus a $12.50 bump in my current plan, and you own the phone outright after.
my old plan was $32.50 and the new plan is $45 with a stupid amount of data.
its a 2yr contract and so it works out to just $420 (nice) over 2 years for me compared to what i was paying before.
for a phone that was flagship just a few months ago, it's an amazing deal and rarely seen for iphones.
just last week i was almost ready to buy an s25 ultra for like $1500... much happier with this since im already using an iphone.

Badhobz 11-03-2025 11:11 AM

420... smoking deal.

bcrdukes 11-03-2025 11:16 AM

Damn, that's a good deal.

unit 11-03-2025 11:22 AM

there is a thread about it here:

https://forums.redflagdeals.com/fido...-user-2786432/

you can just go on your app and click upgrade phone, then filter by certified preowned and you should see it.
i heard it wasnt offered to everyone though.. probably those who already have a more expensive plan won't see this offer.
only for us cheapasses that already have dirt cheap plans.

bcrdukes 11-03-2025 11:52 AM

I have no offers. :okay:

Hoping the game is on the 22nd (Saturday) then I'm making the trip out. My parents have a set of seasons tickets in the supporters section 251(or 252 can't remember).

I was there for the 7-0 Philly game, what an atmosphere that day

Caps success + Son effect? Not sure, I went to Round 1 game 1 great crowd I think it was like 32k people. Got my tickets for Round 2 Game 1 expecting a bigger crowd but didn't expect what's essentially a sold out BC place now. Good to see the support either way. This is so weird of me talking about it because up until last year watching soccer in any format was one of my most hated things but I guess my son's love for soccer and me spoiling him and taking him to a lot of games has rubbed off. Though partially it's just seeing him happy, team success and the Thomas Muller effect he has great energy.

I just got out of a uber, the driver was listening to some podcast on radio or some shit:

Over the 20 min drive home, half way thru an AI "coach" entered the podcast.

The "ai coach" was developed by a woman, for her own personal growth. Or so she said.

Those of you who have used AI chatbots, im sure you know they are never negative. Its always positive and reinforced comments.

Anyways: the woman that created this shit said a bunch of stuff that blew my mind.
1. "Sometimes i prefer to talk to the ai than friends, because its always there for me. You dont need to set up a time to meet or talk, its instant"

2. "If im having a bad day, and dont want to share my feeling with friends, i can talk to the ai, and they will always make me feel better without criticism. The reply is always positive."

Holy fuck, can you imagine the next wave of women out there?

Everyone around us is already as soft as a fucking wet napkin.

We already have a society of women that think they are all 10s and deserve only the top 1%.
If the next wave of women are brainwashed by an ai chatbot, there is 0 hope for them. From dating, to having conversations, getting rejected for a job, to being written up by HR at work, etc.

We already live in an antisocial world due to tv, vr, videogames, phones, etc. AI is going to take it one step further.

This applies for men too obviously. Il check back in 15 years what species (gender) is more messed up.

Someone plug me into the grid already....

I think this is the bot they were talking about: reference: https://www.tvo.org/podcasts/me-plus...l-intelligence

Nothing in the fine print saying you owe 600$ at the end of 2 years?
Very suspicious they are selling a 1000$ phone for 400$. Hopefully you didnt get a knockoff lol

Badhobz 11-04-2025 03:21 PM

this society is FUCKED. absolutely fucked.

therefore please enjoy your lives while you still can. if youre a parent, please try and protect your little shits from the horrors of this world WHILE YOU STILL CAN. If youre a single mofo, relax guy, go spend on yourself and experiences WHILE YOU STILL CAN !!!!!!!

go do something, anything! shit feels like its all gonna come crashing down soon.
