We gotta have hope, lol.

Hopefully the male team beats the "super-hard" South Korea and then whoever is left. It's the only way they will avoid being crucified if they don't win the world cup.

Edit: Also, the Silver medal the Brazilian women won in 2008 in Beijing was an excellent result, given that there is no support for women's soccer in Brazil.

not really fair to compare results now to the past, everything impoves during time (technique, nutrition, training)

jordan said it best, "remember now, they learned from us, we didn't learn from them"

It gets worse. FIFA investigating comments made by Cdn soccer players post-game about ref. Suspensions for bronze medal game a possibility.
Don't really follow soccer, even during Olympics but found that interesting. Did any of the key players on team Canada make any of those comments?

don't forget equipment as well. Think of the advancement of shoes over the years.

Racewalking Has A Doping Scandal On Its Hands

Quote:

When Alex Schwazer of Italy won the 50k racewalk in Beijing four years ago, he shaved more than a minute off an Olympic-record time that had stood for 20 years. Schwazer was among the favorites to win the event again this year—the 50k race is scheduled for Saturday—but it appears he won't get that chance: Schwazer was kicked out of the Games yesterday for doping, and the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) today confirmed that he had tested positive for EPO. Yes, EPO—a doping agent that increases the body's production of red blood cells. Because racewalkers don't fuck around.

Here's the AP:

Schwazer [...] sobbed on Italian TV on Tuesday. He insisted he won his gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics without the use of drugs. He says he "wanted the gold again at all costs."

Schwazer says he learned how to use EPO via the Internet, and that the last three weeks after the doping test were "terrible" because he knew the results would be positive.

Win at all costs? Doping? Teary-eyed apologies in public for getting caught? Who says racewalking isn't a real sport?

The world should be like this.

Props to all contenders... You are all winners!

I can't believe our Canadian soccer team is whining like that. It's pretty unCanadian. I totally understand their frustration, but complaining should not come from the athletes themselves. Spectators, management, and fans, yes, but not the athletes.

Everyone who saw the game knew how poor the officiating was. The seventh ranked team played their hearts out and nearly beat the number one, and heavily favoured to win gold, team. Leave it at that, because the team had a tonne of respect up until they started whining. Everybody is proud of the work and effort they displayed on the field. Let that be the lasting memory of a fantastic game.

File a protest, but don't lower yourselves to whining. I'm disappointed - just my two bits.

Who was the runner in the lane beside Liu Xiang?
He didn't even jump the first hurdle. From one of the camera angles,
Looked like he was holding the side of his thigh.
Did that runner pull something right after the start?

Regarding the womens soccer thing, I didn't catch the game.
At first, based on what I've been reading, I was mad too.
But I read this article earlier. My POV has changed now.
Why The Women's Soccer Semifinal Was Definitely Not Fixed For The U.S.

TL;DR,
American player fell. Canadian player stepped on American player's head.
Ref didn't call a foul or give a red card.
The game could have easily been 10 on 11.
Canada would have been destroyed playing shorthanded.

Hondaracer 08-07-2012 08:20 PM

pretty amazing that carl lewis, although it is "substantial" was basically .6 of a second behind Bolt

RacingMetro92 08-07-2012 08:32 PM

Some people say that Canadians don't complain enough. Don't know where that came from, but this call changed the game and was so controversial because the last time it was called in a pro game was 2002. Refs MISS calls, but the reason why everyone is pissed is because she called one thats never called. The US coach was even quotes as saying she has never seen it called and she's been in the game 45 years. The fact that the penalty was called with 20 minutes left doesn't make it a real timewasting argument because a goalie woulnt start stalling that early. I can say the refs missed an even more blatant missed handball by an American in the box earlier but that was missed too, just like the head stomp.

Inexperience plays a role in this as she's only reffed 5 or so games at a high level. I noticed she was behind the play A LOT so a bunch of things were missed too.
