I've done it before too and on an extreme gridlock that extended for a few kms out by Hwy1 near the Chilliwack/Hope area.

Honestly the only people that are angry/annoyed/offended are the ones that are wishing they too were in a bike at that same time and moment. And as for hazard, unless some car is purposely gonna mow you over, you're gonna survive a 5-10 kmh drop/collision, if it even comes to that which I highly doubt. You'd be able to stop in a dime at that speed.

Just a PSA for those who are riding in the rainy weather:
Be extra careful and watch out for the oil patches.
I had an R6 go down in front of me on Oak street Wed afternoon when he was slowing down for the red light.
When I got out of my cage to see if the was ok, I saw three oil patches on the road.
The rider was ok, but his bike took some major cosmetic damage.

The cager was being an asshat but the rider escalated things. I've had my share of instances where I got mad. It's tougher to be the bigger person and let things go.

I can't tell who those people who were trying to break the fight up were telling to calm down, I assumed the biker who was at a huge disadvantage.

So how many of you with little ones of have thought about taking a break? It's something that's been weighing on me heavy for most the summer really. I've had bikes off and on for the last 15 years, I've had a couple bikes over the last 4 years well my son has grown from 5 to 9 years old.

I'm going to take the winter to think about it but I might be taking a long break from riding. I know you could die getting hit walking across the street or by some random bullshit and this is how I've always internally justified riding well he's growing up. My wife is 100% supportive of any decision I make, she's never pushed me one way or the other and even now when I go to her she tells me it's my decision I have to decide.

My FZ-09 might be for sale this spring, not making a decision just yet and who knows maybe when the winter ends and the weather turns I won't be able to resist jumping back on two wheels.....or maybe not.

Why not switch to track days only?

Ever thought of downsizing to a smaller bike? 125 or 300cc? I know is a huge jump backwards, but I love riding my 125 over my 600 in the city any day.. I still get to enjoy the 2 wheels, have enough power to pass and get around cars, yet still stay in control in almost every situation.. Top out at around 100kph, enjoy those corners a little more and all in all its much more fun driving the hell out of a smaller cc bike, then having to spend your whole ride taming the bike..

This might be an option but it's pretty expensive from what I understand plus there is the logistics of getting another vehicle to get the bike to and from.

I'm not a small guy almost 250 pounds, I don't think I could go to a bike that small and enjoy it. It's not that my bike scares me, I'm more worried about the people around me which a smaller bike really wouldn't solve.

I assume you commute on your bike. Do you drive when the weather turns crappy or you don't feel up for riding to work? if yes, I say either keep your bike or downsize like Dragon-88 says. You're going to regret down the road getting rid of the bike like I did with my CBR 125R. I listened to my left brain too much with that decision.

Lighter bikes are nicer for commutes. The Grom is a great nimble city commuter with good hoonigan potential if you don't have to go on the freeway on a regular basis. My CBR 125R which produced 11.5 HP could keep up with freeway traffic and sometimes pass it although that's about it, the 8.96 HP Grom isn't quite made for that. I was able to get one up to 95km/h (displayed) on the Knight St. Bridge. Otherwise, you could consider a 250 to 300 with ABS.

My buddy is 250lbs+round with a Grom. He hits 100 no problem. He rides from New West to North Van everyday on the HWY. Plus that's why I kinda ranged it from 125-300cc, its almost impossible to convince someone to get a 125 coming from a bigger bike.. LOL

If you're worried about the people, ride with a loud pipe.. The Akrapovic on my Grom is amazing.. Every time I go to a bike meet, everyone's expecting some 600cc+ bike to show up. Them Boom my lil grom rolls around the corner and puts smiles on peoples faces.. Whether it be laughing with or at me, I don't care.. I'm having a blast riding the Grom.. 9K+ kms since mid Feb.

Cars hear me blocks away, cops don't care because its a tiny bike, you wont be breaking the speed limit which is usually their #1 concern on bikes..

I have a 4 and a 6 year old myself. I asked myself the same questions after some family related issues earlier this year. Soon enough I was bike-less and moving to Kelowna. The regret set in before I even sold my bike and lasted several months. I got a 125cc scooter now that allows me to at least be on two wheels. I still really want a real bike again but I must buy a house first. Good compromise between my left and right brain. I also have the luxury here of being able to drive if it rains or I don't think I'm mentally able to be a good defensive rider, unlike in Vancouver where it was either bike or the crappy transit system.

Knowing how you don't want to downsize, if you can afford to keep the bike, keep it. Ride enough to keep your skills sharp. One of my hockey buddies started taking his daughter out on weekend pleasure rides and she loves it. 9 may be a tiny bit young but you know your kid.

Man, I thought I was the only crazy one still riding in this weather here in Kelowna. I saw four other bikes this morning, and it was -1 this morning, an FZ-07 or 09, a KLR 650, and a couple other bikes I couldn't quite recognize. Then in the 20 minutes I rode to and from lunch with a client, there were 7 bikes from a Harley to a Ducati. I'm the only scooter out there though.

A far cry from the summer where bikes were anywhere and everywhere, but still nice to see a bunch of us still refusing to give up our bikes until first snow fall. Maybe the dual sports will still be out there.

I just bought a new bike! Yamaha XVS 250, I am pretty new to bikes so didnt want anything too powerful its more of a cruiser. Now looking for a new helmet, any recommendations?

if you want to go with the HJC, try the CL17 instead. There are notable improvements in the 17 over the 16 and the price is still affordable. Snell 2010 and DOT ratings for a sub $200 or less helmet.

While the bell rogue is a pretty narly helmet, the mouth guard doesn't offer any impact protection and offers esthetics purely and not for safety. It will stop bugs but that's it.

visit our local bike shops during the winter. There are clear outs that are priced well against US dollar. (plus you get to try em on for fit)

Try Modern or Daytona, they should have lots of CL 17's in stock in various colors and finishes.
