After training camp, each team submitted a protected list consisting of up to 18 skaters and up to 2 goaltenders. Any player that had played at least 1 season as a professional either had to be protected or could potentially be claimed in the waiver draft. The waiver draft was abolished with the 2005 CBA.

When his contract expired, Larionov left for Europe. I'm sure that contributed to leaving him unprotected.

IIRC, there was clause in his contract as a part of the deal to let him leave Russia that if he resigned with the Nucks, there would be another payment to the Russian hockey federation; and Igor didn't want any more $$ heading that way.

Kadri on Backstrom was stupid, not dirty. He'll get a punishment somewhere between Lucic on Miller/Gionta on Reimer(nothing) to TooToo on Miller (2 games).

Kadri in no way deserved 5 and a game for the Granlund hit. Principal point of contact wasn't the head, he didn't leave his feet, or use his elbow. He didn't even deserve 2 minutes for that.
