Orpik declining Thorton's request to fight does not give him the grounds to do what he did or be able to justify it in any way.

I don't look at it as a heat of the moment, Thorton bolted down the ice when he saw the group of players together and IMMEDIATELY grabbed Orpik. He was gonna get some sucker punches in there either way.

He decided to go for Orpik before he even got there. If he didn't do something during that scuffle he would have done something at some point as the game progressed

Neal went to the bench after his hit on Marchand so Thornton went up to the next guy he saw.

His target was Orpik the entire game after the Eriksson hit, that's why he did what he did.

Who knew Orpik could be that fragile... unfortunate.

kerry fraser does bring up a few good points on how the refs could have done more to calm the game down a few notches to maybe prevent those things from happening. but then again the refs have to make judgment calls on the spot, so.....
