I see an issue where our defense core is just too old.

schneider should have been swapped for an established young player(all those years of grooming schneider and having marvellous stats) instead of a draft pick, canucks know they cant develop players for shit.

-gillis should have taken anything for luongo but he got greedy and couldnt lose face.

-should have packaged schneider and pick for a star player because now were banking on horvat/shink/gaunce to pan out or even make the nhl, where as schneider was already a bonafide #1 starter in the league.

-canucks are horribad with handling and developing young players. that grabner +1st and bernier trade for ballard still gives me the jackychanwhatfuckface since draft day that year. (team was looking for a big defenceman and then trades for a small puckmover to sit in the pressbox)

At that time I don't think they were looking for a big dman.

-we needed a dman when we didn't resign willie.
-game at that time was based more on speed and puck moving.
-we didn't sign hamhuis.
-Grabner wasn't able to stay in the lineup. (Raymond vs Grabner debate)
-Bernier was just Bernier, wasn't able to compete for spot.
-1st round pick end up being Howden. Have yet to establish anything yet.

As much as I put the blame on Gillis for the Ballard trade, I blame more on AV for misusing players in a way. Never really gave Ballard a chance. Look at Torts...Kassian or Sestito is out of shape? He says it and he actually does something about it and I've improvements from both of them. Not sure what exactly AV will do though.
