Any input on getting a GS300 vs. GS400?

The 2J just seems easier to work on. I don't really care if it has less power than the 1U - I'm old and it's just a comfy highway cruiser.

Only way I would get the 300 would be in a super rare stick shift , and swapping in a 2JZ-GTE. Other than that 400 all the way.

tofu1413 01-31-2019 09:44 PM

GS300 came in stick shift...??!

the 400/ 430 gets almost same gas mileage as the 300.... so the V8 will be the better buy imo

JDMDreams 01-31-2019 09:54 PM

I might sell my GS430 pm me for info if you are interested

A quick Google search says auto only for the GS (SC300 was available with a manual, though)

I guess it’s possible you may have been able to custom order one back then?

tofu1413 01-31-2019 11:11 PM

i know the SC300 was available with stick, but GS I havent seen or heard...

He told me he will be free tomorrow but I just don't have time to check it out.
Better let you buy it, instead of someone that do not appreciate it bought the car and flip it for profit.

Badhobz ,
In case you're not buying it, can you please let me know.
I will go check it out on Saturday, if you don't want it. Thanks.

TouringTeg 02-01-2019 08:34 AM

GS 300/400/430 were auto only

He still hasn't responded to me so feel free bud. If you get it, I'd be very happy for you. It's great to see these cars with fellow enthusiasts. They truely are amazing machines and the pinnacle of what Lexus used to be. I think I posted this link before, but I love them so much I wrote a review for my old one.

https://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/20...2-lexus-sc430/

And the wife doesn't want another car since we already have 3 and nowhere to park the other one.

Just make sure you Carfax it before agreeing. He said there's some damages on his ad, if it's a rebuilt walk away, especially rear damage. The hardtop is easily damage and then you'll have roof alignment issues, water leaking into the trunk, etc etc. Any rear damage greater than a thousand I'd be very wary.

Badhobz 02-01-2019 09:30 AM

If you have any questions just PM me. I'm very familiar with these cars.

When you check out the car make sure you do the following.

- check for water stain marks in the trunk. Usually if it's a bad convertible top, there will be water stains close to the C pillars. Lexus designed a little water catch area, but the fitment is very precise. Any accidents will cause it to misalign and you'll get water in the trunk when it rains.

https://i.postimg.cc/bNBKWSwT/Captur...1-10-33-10.png

- check the Mark Levinson speakers. They are known to delaminate and you'll hear this buzz from the base. Easy enough fix if it happens with a foam speaker kit, but its a lot of work to take apart everything.

- his navigation latch is closed. This usually means his navigation is not working. The optical drive for these old dvd based Navi weren't the greatest and the laser burns out really frequently. The newest map for download will be 2012 so even if the dvd nav works, it'll still be outdated.

- timing belt and water pump. Make sure those are done.

- you can stop the convertible hardtop halfway. Make sure you check all the hydraulics and the rubber seals. If anything makes loud noises or the rubber gaskets look white and faded, id be careful.

- headlights are all yellow so I think this guy parks it outdoors.

The 400 came with the 1UZ, that motor will last 500k easily. The 2J isn't a bad motor but if I remember right the 1UZ was regarded as one of the best motors out there. The 300 is also pretty rare IIRC.

The Producer 02-01-2019 10:06 AM

i don't really know much about these, didn't know you could buy a manual, as you say above the 3 pedal has to be pretty rare. Cool car. Not sure if good buy with the mileage

I really enjoyed my 92 Sc400. 1uz is bulletproof. That manual is sc300 is a nice buy too. Supra TT brakes and coilovers bolt right on.

Decent deal on an accident-free 2008 Acura MDX Elite package (if you can get over the green colour), only 108k km, $14900

My GS400 had 393k kms on the odo before it was totaled last year. My new GS400 has 308k kms and pulls hard. I do have PPE headers, MK4 Supra LSD and a high stall torque converter tho :)

SkunkWorks 02-01-2019 02:56 PM

Man... My very first car was a 92 SC400 (that I bought off RS). Amazing engine and super cushy.

And of all the cars I've had since, the one that scored the most girls :megusta:

Speaking of Lexus GS, here's a 2006 GS430 from Audi Langley with only 55k km on the odometer, priced just under $13000.

Spectre_Cdn 02-01-2019 03:02 PM

The reason for the low kms and price is the significant accident history.

Are owners hesitant to drive their cars after big accidents? I’ve noticed extra low mileage cars often have big claims attached.

Ages ago my moms brand new car was tboned (the other persons fault) right after pulling out of the lot at the dealership. Other than coming off the transport truck she was the only person who had driven it (test drove it and then bought it).
