Why won't Tesla make a small compact or hatch? City commuter, grocery getter, etc. I think it would take off, bring down the entry cost of an electric car to more people. Say $30-35K.

They are working on it and have talked about it. They want it in the 20K range in the US.

GLOW 03-03-2023 03:32 PM

they were thinking of calling it a model 2 right?
didn't they say it was going to be maybe 2025?

i guess if they release it now it'd be shooting themselves in the foot for model 3 sales

Alpine 03-03-2023 04:54 PM

The current interest rate environment and heavy competition from China are likely putting their model 2 plans on pause (not to mention the ongoing development of the Cyber truck). They are also working on a model 3 / Y refresh at the same time. They've already dropped the price of their cars and they're aiming to deliver 1.8M+ vehicles this year (an increase of ~600k vehicles).

I wouldn't be surprised if Tesla continues with another price drop this year so they can hit their delivery goal (which is fantastic for consumers since Tesla is choosing volume over restricting production & protecting their margins).

Add: Their investor day presentation also teased a "van" (possibly the robo taxi that they have been referring to).

I don't think it's on pause by any mean. In fact, if you listen to Investor Day, the whole thing is going full steam ahead.

The way I figure it would unfold is all about scale. Tesla just doesn't have enough factories yet.

Giga Monterey will be the first Gen 3 factory. And if you follow the latest news, Tom Zhu, the mastermind behind Giga Shanghai said he's going to break the Giga Shanghai record of 9.5mth from breaking the ground to the first car out. And Nuevo Leon's Governor said Tesla would break ground in 3mth.

So, that makes around 1yr before Giga Monterey is done. The van would be announced within this 1yr time frame. Because it's a product that wouldn't Obsborne current Tesla lineup. More Gigas will also be announced during this same time frame. Then as other Gigas have a determined timeline, we will see the new Model 2 or whatever they end up calling it.

They already have it. They just don't let anyone know until it's ready.

Just some artists renderings, nothing official

The New Kia EV9 looks pretty sweet - it's basically a Soul XL with a roomy interior. Technical specs won't be released until the end of the month...

Anyone have recommendations for a Kia dealer?

Kia and Hyundai is quietly making their way to a top tier EV producer.

Their commercials are annoying af though...."Wah"

whitev70r 03-14-2023 04:56 PM

^ agreed ... they need to spend a little on marketing. Or, maybe the waitlist is so long, they don't.

Size-wise, it's three inches shorter in length than the Kia Telluride SUV, albeit with a significantly longer wheelbase, and it's an inch taller and three inches wider than the conventionally powered Telluride.
The Telluride is already 78 inches wide so while the EV9 won't quite be Raptor wide (86.6) it's gonna be pretty unwieldy to drive around the city at 81 inches (a CR-V comes in at 73" wide)

bcedhk 03-14-2023 05:16 PM

cool car, but probably gonna see less than 10 on the road.

You know Hyundai messed up on supply when there's no sight of any Ioniq 5 or EV6's around H Mart in Coquitlam.

Yea... now if we can actually get supply and have cars ready to go into customer's hands lol...

JDMDreams 03-14-2023 07:05 PM

^^ and not blow engines or catch on fire :accepted:

Hondaracer 03-15-2023 08:27 AM

Saw a Rivian SUV the other day on Lougheed. That look does not translate well into the SUV lol

JDMDreams 03-15-2023 08:56 AM

What's wrong with it? Just looks like any other pick up these days like a box

Hondaracer 03-15-2023 10:52 AM

The pickup looks fine the proportions etc.

I’m talking about the “R1S” or whatever the SUV is. It looks like the rest of the cab is just a canopy on the truck body as opposed to a different frame

EvoFire 03-15-2023 11:36 AM

^ I get what you mean, it's like they spent all the time and effort on making the front part of the vehicle interesting, then it was 4:58pm and used two minutes to finish the rear compartment.

JDMDreams 03-15-2023 11:42 AM

O I haven't seen the SUV yet, just the pickup so I'll reserve judgement. I did see and eqs SUV last week, much better and elegant looking than the God ugly ix

GLOW 03-15-2023 11:51 AM

the box/rectangle look is ideal for SUV's.

supply would be great, also minus stealership games associated.

I just pulled my deposit on an ioniq 5 after a year. They e-mailed and basically said there's no point because they don't know when they will actually be able to place orders.

Of course, as I do so they say, hey we happen to be getting exactly the spec you asked for in a couple of weeks. You can have it if you pay the extra $5k for all the garbage dealer options you don't want.

Nope.

EvoFire 03-15-2023 02:03 PM

^ Just cynical ol' me, but they have allocations, they just didn't want to sell it to you. Why not make an extra $5k?

When dealerships do that (with their EV sales), they are just driving their customers straight into Elon's wallet.
