Vancouver Canucks forwards Henrik and Daniel Sedin have been awarded honourary doctorate degrees by Kwantlen Polytechnic University for their contributions to the local community.

“I’m a Canucks fan, and it goes without saying the Sedins are exceptionally skilled players whose leadership, talent and hard work give the Canucks an edge that is unparalleled,” said KPU president and vice-chancellor Dr. Alan Davis. “But what people may not know about the Sedins is that they demonstrate the same integrity and selflessness off the ice through their service to their communities, and in particular to children in those communities.”

The twins support a number of local charities, most notably the Canucks For Kids Fund, Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, Canucks Autism Network, and BC Children’s Hospital.

While donning the traditional cap and gown, the twins made heartfelt speeches while accepting their new honour. “It’s important for us to do as much as we can in our communities,” said Canucks Captain Henrik Sedin.

“We were pretty decent students but we never thought we would get a Doctor of Laws degree,” added Daniel.

The school says the twins are “dedicated humanitarians” who exemplify servant leadership through their work in the community.

Tavares wants to win the Stanley Cup, not join a team rebuilding. He'll either re-sign with NYI or go to a cup contender.

It'd be nice, but it's so unlikely to happen it's not even worth considering.

I wouldn't mind signing Tavares as a UFA but I wouldn't want to trade assets for him ahead of his contract expiring. It would mean having to move a center since we have Matthews/Kadri/Bozak/Boyle (if he stays) and potentially Nylander to fill that position. I'd rather work with what we have since Matthews/Nylander/Marner will all be getting paid out around the same time and Tavares will eat a lot of cap space.

The Leafs already attempted to bring him into the fold in 2007 by offering him an AHL contract, hoping the league would bend the draft age rules for his birthday being so close over cutoff. Can't blame JFJ for trying.

Tavares, who’s birthday is Sept. 20, is ineligible for next summer’s draft, which has a cut-off date of Sept. 15 for 18-year-olds. The Oshawa Generals superstar is trying to convince the NHL to let him be drafted, even though he would only be 17. It’s doubtful the NHL would change the rules.

Those in the Tavares camp believe the 17-year-old is too good for junior and want him to play in the NHL. He scored 72 goals in the OHL last year as a 16-year-old.

The Leafs believe he could be a ticket-seller for the attendance-starved Marlies next season and may be able to use his name on a pro contract as leverage with whatever team drafts him, a league source told the Star.

The Leafs believe he can develop his hockey skills more fully while continuing to live at home.

The AHL would have to change its eligibility rules — it has the same requirement as the NHL that players must have turned 18 by Sept. 15 — to allow Tavares to play. The rule is a new one this year and the Leafs believe the league could change the rule, especially if it means snagging a marquee player.

Leagues have changed the rules for Tavares in the past. The OHL changed its policy to let him in as a 14-year-old.

Under one scenario, the Leafs would sign Tavares to a one-year AHL deal and release him to the draft.

Under another, the Leafs would sign him to a multi-year, multi-million deal and arrange to trade his rights to whatever NHL team drafted him. There is no player-exchange agreement between the NHL and the AHL, just as there is no player exchange agreement between the NHL and Russian teams.

The Leafs have lost forward Tony Salmaneinen to a Russian team willing to pay him three times what he would have earned playing for the Leafs.

The Leafs believe they can use the same loophole to get Tavares. Under the second scenario, Tavares would receive more money to play in the NHL than he might expect from salary-capped rookie contract. An entry level contract pays less than $1 million a year.

That would act as an insurance policy in case the phenom were injured as a pro while playing for the Marlies before he was drafted.

Under that second scenario, Tavares could theoretically earn more money playing in the AHL than the NHL. He could choose to stay with the Marlies for three seasons, ignore the team that drafts him in 2009, and become an unrestricted free agent after his Marlies contract expires in 2011.

“If there’s any team that can afford it (a big AHL contract) it’s the Maple Leafs,” said one league source.

Other 17-year-olds have played in North America’s minor leagues, including Radek Bonk and Sergei Samsonov.

After being drafted — he’s eligible in 2009 — he could choose to honour his AHL contract or request a trade to the team that drafted him.

Neither Leafs GM John Ferguson, nor Tavares’s agent, Brian MacDonald, could be reached for comment.

from what i've seen Brown and Baum will be on the bench, while Jarvis and Manny will be upstairs.

Brown getting PP responsibilities and Baum will be getting defense/PK responsibilities

I think Jarvis would be on the bench too no? He was there last season.

Canucks also seem really high on Elias Pettersson, having invited him to Vancouver for an interview and dinner with Linden & Sedin bros

I'm really hoping that Tanev gets traded for a high 1st round pick (Dallas' 3rd seems the most likely) so that we can pick up 2 top prospects. It'll definitely help speed up the rebuild by a year or two (depending on how the two develop)

No. The skill gap doesn't justify giving up 2 very good prospects for one.

I'd do it for next year's draft with Dahlin and Svechnikov being in the lock for #1/#2 but then the team that has the 1st overall pick would have to be oversold to give it up. Who doesn't want a #1 Dman that projects to be like Karlsson?
