even if they had an idea where to look in the park, no way they'd have enough manpower to canvass at midnight and have near-immediate results.
With technology nowadays, police probably tracked her down if she enabled locations services.

RCMP are always a number of steps ahead of what they let the media know (obviously).

Also, regardless of the movies we've all watched people are never as smart as a plain movie villain (duh). Whenever I think about "man how did they find the guy half a province away" after a crime it's really just stupid things. Electronic payment trails, social media (!!!!!!), cameras. The social media thing really gets me. For someone trying to lay low, it's amazing how dumb these criminals can be on FB and twitter.

they can do that? what's all the fuss about Apple not letting investigators into the San Bernardino shooter's phone?

in another case (also in the US) when someone drowned last year, fitbit details were provided in an attempt to find the GPS coordinates.

I think that was something different. A parent could use Location Services to track their kids with some apps. Accessing someone's phone is usually a no-go without a warrant if you're needing to look into the actual phone. Location services sends data out of the phone so you don't need the phone to see the data.

the police can ping your cellphone signal if it's on, much like when you call 911 we get an approximate location through triangulation of cell towers, along with an uncertainty level in meters showing how far you could be from that location. sometimes the uncertainty can be 10 meters which is great but sometimes it can be like 10,000

not saying that's how they found her, just saying that it is possible

They used K9, I have no doubt about it. That's the most likely scenario how they found her so quickly. A fresh body in Central Park is not difficult to locate if they know the general location with a K9 unit.

Cell phone GPS works fine in Central Park. Did a run along the trail a few weekends ago and it tracked everything perfectly fine on my GPS tracking app (Strava)

and how did police find her only 2 hours after she was reported missing, in a densely wooded park at night?

hope they catch whoever did this soon, feel like this has really hit close to home for a lot of people.. RIP to the poor girl

that elisa lam story was scary as fuck. still is.

Whether or not it's bordered by busy streets and high-density residential areas is irrelevant.

if you try using a GLONASS + GPS running watch or a drone, more likely than not you'll struggle to get a signal.

I'm not talking about the trails, once you go off the path and under the canopy.

A 13 yr old tragically died suddenly, cops are treating it as a homicide and a few of you are debating on the effectiveness of GPS in trails vs. the city??!! C'mon give your head a shake guys.

yeah seriously.. I will never buy that she somehow managed to get onto the locked roof by herself, climb up the water tank in the early hours of the morning, lift a huge lid, and drown, mental health or otherwise. I watched the video once, and I've never really dared watch it again, gives me the creeps through and through. the short video of Marissa gave me the same feeling too

natural progression of the discussion on how she's found within a few hours

there's no other developing facts to go on right now

A man in Iran was hung a few weeks ago after he raped and killed a 9 year old girl. In the video (which i wont post) you hear hundreds of people cheering his death and witness what happens to pedophiles.

Spoiler!

Not really, since areas like that are going to be fairly flat. Go for a hike in a steep valley and then talk about not being able to get a GPS signal. Something like a running watch or drone is going to need a more precise fix, getting a rough spot to start a sniffer dog isn't likely to be a problem.

Its just a discussion. Posting "wow RIP" is no more beneficial to the victims, and the conversation is not being done with any disrespect.
When something tragic happens, its human nature to wonder why, and how.

It is startling how fast this story did unravel from start to finish.
