Been listening to some post election analysis on how the Trump administration would likely affect Canada, and aside from the expected economic pressures from tariffs, CUSMA review, and Trump's low key hostility towards Turd and US-Canada relations, an important point was made about pressures on military spendings. Trump is well known to pressure NATO and other US partners to up their military spendings and meet NATO spending targets, and in this regard, Canada has been an absolute disgrace. The NATO GDP spending target is 2% for member countries, and Canada currently spends an absymally low 1.29% of our GDP on the military.

We really have no excuse not to spend more -- our military forces are too small and spread too thin, and getting deployed far too often to help with disaster assistance and such (within Canada). Their equipment are old and prone to failure. The international community rightfully view our military as a joke, and our military partners also rightfully view us as a free loader.

The problem is we don't have the money to properly fund the military. To meet the NATO target would require a 55% increase in military spendings. With a gloomy economic outlook from the looming Trump administration, increasing military spending is gonna be even more difficult, but under pressure from Trump, I don't see how we can escape the responsibility.

So if military spendings go up, it's gonna be some sort of combination of cuting spending elsewhere as well as hiking taxes. FailFish

Well, that's just privilege... they feel that because they grew up here, they deserve to own a house where they grew up. Logically, if you can't afford a place, you should move elsewhere but they choose to stay and complain about it.

I have a few friends who try to pull the same mental gymnastics and it does drive me crazy. It makes zero sense when looking at the big picture but I suspect it makes them feel like they are smarter than everyone else and so on they go.

I don't know anything about Hondaracer other than knowing he's got a massive boner for Trudeau, but my friends who are like this all seem to fit in the same boat. Massive underachievers who can't understand why their peers have rocketed ahead of them in life, despite them feeling or maybe even being more intelligent than their peers.

These guys all feel they know something the rest of us don't and the more push back they get more sure they are. It just leads to an unhealthy contrarian view which is self-destructive for them and our society.

Trump is just a symptom of this, though he also seems to amplify it along with Musk, Fox news, etc.

While I don't think Harris was a great candidate I don't think that's what did her in - she had to carry the baggage of an unpopular President and deal with an electorate unhappy with inflation.

I'm not sure she was any worse a candidate than Biden but I'm sure, given time, that the Democrats could have found a better candidate but even then I'm not sure they win. I think you'd need 3rd term Obama or a 20 years younger Bill Clinton to win.

In my regular life I live under the assumption that all politicians are shit and no one is ever going to do anything tangible for you, socially or financially, so I don’t think about it too much.

Speaking of the stock market, as Hondaracer mentioned, markets always rally after elections. But let’s be honest, the market was already doing well before the election, and, just like in 2016, Trump will inherit a booming stock market.

It’ll also be interesting to see how long the bromance between Trump and Elon lasts. I get the sense it won’t last long, as Elon loves the spotlight, and there’s no chance Trump will let him steal it from him. Trump’s loyalty is to one person: himself.

He's on the list, and so is Newsom. There's also Shapiro from PA, who I think should have been Harris' VP. The issue was that he's Jewish, and they were worried that might hurt them. Michigan Gov Whitmer could be a good pick if they want to run another woman, but it would be risky to try for a third time. The Democrats need fresh faces, someone younger who can appeal to moderate voters.

As for the Republicans, let's see how it plays out. With Trump out, there's JD Vance, though he has less national appeal than Harris. There will be plenty of other Republicans putting their names in the mix. The big question will be where the MAGA movement stands in 4 years and whether a candidate other than Trump can bring them to the polls.

Gavin Newsom 2028 -- he's been my guy for a while now, I think he has the tools to be successful. He's not afraid to go into the dirt and debate on Fox News against Republicans, he has the look, and the governor of the largest state in the country.

I've said for a while he'd be a great choice. His biggest liability might be him being a Californian, although if Trump can beat the "coastal" detriment, so can he. He might also get attacked on some of the "woke" stuff he's pushed through in California, and maybe some of his corporate ties, but I think that's something he can easily pivot.

I have a number of them as friends, same story, underachievers, mad at the world, took a gamble on throwing some money at Bitcoin years ago and made some bank (upwards of $100K and more), now they act like they're some kind of economic savants while posting about Trump in their stories on the weekly.

The crazy thing is many of them are minorities -- Filipino, Brown, Persian, Black, Chinese, etc.

Trump could bomb and extradite everyone from their countries tomorrow and they'd still be celebrating the man because they made a profit in crypto.
