California is the 4th largest economy BECAUSE it is part of the US, not despite it.
The current Tech/University/venture capital ecosystem can trace their roots back to US Defense Department investment into the state in the early 50s and 60s.
The Tech giants continue to print mad stacks of money because they are part of and can sell to the largest consumer market in the world.
So if California were to secede and close off their borders (unlikely without plunging the rest of the country into civil war) I highly doubt it will remain 4th largest in the world for very long.
California’s economy stands on its own. It leads in tech, entertainment, agriculture, and innovation. The roots might trace back to federal investment, but it has long outgrown that. With its ports, universities, and global business ties, it does not need the U.S. to survive. It is already competing on a global level. On top of that, California is basically powerless in presidential elections because of the Electoral College, despite its size and importance.
Cheering on California or Blue State secession is not going to solve the issue of Trumpism. The US needs California to counterbalance the shithole red states dragging the rest of the world into the Dark ages.
Even China held back from activating military against the protesters in Hong Kong. Even at the peak. The most they did was drive them around town as a passive threat of force
So that's the one thing Trump is doing differently than Xi.

And yet if you asked the average American, based on the media reports at the time, they probably think China massacred the Hong Kong protestors Tiananmen-style back in 2019
China just did it discretely, that's all. Mixed their special police forces (武警) into the HKPD, and hardline cracked down on the protesters through excessive use of force. There were numerous videos from Hong Kong protesters catching these so-called HKPD officers / riot police speaking / commanding in Mandarin. Physical attack forms resembling Chinese use of force trainings. Lots of unexplained "suicides" from jumping off buildings and disappearances and such.
Yeah, so Trump is deploying the military and Xi didn't officially deploy the military, but I don't really see how the two are all that different for now, in terms of what the HK police forces / US troops are actually doing on the ground.
It is also worth bearing in mind that HK protesters were largely peaceful, whereas the same cannot be said for the LA protests.

I'm not cheering for it, I'm just pointing out that when people feel like their voices aren't being heard and they’re politically powerless, you get reactions like secession bubbling to the surface. You're seeing a similar sentiment in Alberta. We can dismiss it as nonsense, but there are plenty of things we once thought politically impossible that are now becoming reality.
The problem with California is that it's too reliably Blue. I mean it has the most electoral votes of any state because duh, it's got the most people. It's basically the anchor on one side of America's never ending tug of war. If they seceded, it's unlikely the US would ever win a Democratic House or White House ever again. If their voters were as wishy-washy as Georgia or Pennsylvania it would get a ton more attention. It's the obediant child that's been neglected by mom and dad because it always does the right thing. In that sense it's the US political system to blame.
In that vein I think Ala-berta has a better case for leaving due to being treated poorly by the Feds, but still think their separatist movement is idiotic as well.

What's ridiculous is how much pull those tiny shit red states have in the election... if anything Cali should have MORE influence than it already does.
All the progressives are BIGLY mad about the LA situation... they are 100% in support of illegal immigration. They call them "migrants" and say California was Mexico so all Mexicans should be allowed in, or something.
Those same progressives then attacked the convoy people and are now saying the convoy was on the same level as the LA riots happening now, but was even worse because it was to "overthrow our democracy!"

You know, when the rich side of my family is travelling, you know what they check religiously? Their "must leave by" date. A fellow doctor friend of the family overstayed in Scottsdale before COVID and was banned for 2 years from entering the USA at all!

100 percent. No foreign workers building homes in the U.S., or doing other construction work. No foreign workers working on farms to pick fruit or do other hard physical labour. Why? Orange Turd wants to deport all foreign workers out of the U.S. because of the colour of their skin.

It's not about Red or Blue safe states. It's the states that are Purple - the ones that can swing either way get all the attention from campaigns.
Florida was purple 20 years ago (remember Bush v Gore?). Now it's firmly red so it doesn't garner as much attention now.

Unions are a double edged sword. You protect the worker from being abused by management/ownership but you also protect that lazy ass motherfucker that makes everyone else look bad.
I’ve been in 2 different unions for the last decade almost now, it’s all shit.
It protects cancers, and takes dues to keep your wages lower than the private sector in the guise of protecting your employment. The vast majority of my colleagues don’t use the benefits which are the only upside of unionized work forces, so it’s moot.
If you’re a good worker, and by good it basically means you can consistently show up on time and not much else, unions don’t do shit for you.
